HI, Like your channel..! Retired zoo keeper here, many many new option, and ideas out there. I've had CHICKENS ETC. Since I was 8 YRS OLD 72 now,.... Yikes,... LOL ANYWAY, one thing that I came up with, for both the heated, and non heated DOG bowls, is to get those hanging basket metal plant hangers.... take the chain ETC. Off, turn the basket part upside down, and CLIP it on BOWL, rubber pan ETC. So that the bird, can only put it's head through the openings. This prevents the bird from perching on the bowl, or if using for feed, prevents the bird from scratching the FEED out, and leaving droppings in the FEED. I have all kinds of birds, love SERAMA to Giants....! I live in the Adirondack mountains of upstate N.Y..... can get below zero, in winter quite often. Keeping the water clean , and thawed is a must...... OK, keep up the great work, great videos.... I have to mention, that it's great that people have finally realised how wonderful poultry can be. Years ago, everyone thought I was crazy. ...... Well? ESPECIALLY when I WAS around 10, 11, and ride my bike with 2 BANTAM hens on the handle bars.... lol.
I can’t thank you enough for this. We had a lot of rain in short time frame. This occurred just as we were starting to add on to our coop. The gutters had not been installed and it was terrible. I purchased nine bags of these and it worked great. I did have to keep adding initially. Then it was just like you said. It absorbed great.
Hey Chickenlandia, I live in Maine. I use a small pond pump that I place inside of a tank beside one of my woodstoves in the basement. I pump the warm water up to both chicken coups and into a waterer that drains right back down into my basement as a continuous flow. Even though the water is warm and moving, due to the extreme temperatures I am still forced to insulate the waterline. I use Dollar store Pool noodles. I place a half inch PVC pipe inside of it and a little duct tape and I'm good to go. I don't comment much, maybe not at all till now, but I absolutely love watching your videos. Thanks for the time you spend for us all. Oh yeah, for those wondering about the cost of continuously running the pond pump? It cost an extra $7.00 a month to run it.
I am experiencing my first winter with my chickens, in North Japan where snow is a given every year. Water outside freezes, so I took out the water bucket, and instead used a small plastic box filled with water inside, near the nest. It freezes a lot less, but it is not perfect yet. Thank you for your tips, this is good knowledge ! By the way, my chickens ( Plymouth rock ) still lay eggs during winter. That is incredible, even though I wouldn't mind them taking it slow and resting. Chickens rock ! And Plymouth rock rock too, if I may say so.

The greenhouse can be accessible to your birds with hendoors of clear vinyl. I draftproof my doorways in vinyl with the bottom cut into 2" flaps to make a hendoor. A strip of bright-green tape denotes a hendoor, and my birds aim for the marked area. In daytime, I prop the coop door ajar with a long piece of vinyl with flaps clipped over the opening, and it keeps the coop nicely warm for breaks when they get chilly outside. Extra-drafty places need an extra layer or two of flaps added to the bottom--it'll still work if they can see through it and push their way in. I figured if drunks can negotiate their way into beer coolers, my birds would ace it--and they did!
The water will freeze less quickly if it's under cover, under a roof line. I have my chickens in a raised coop so I put the water underneath in the 2 foot tall space and it does not freeze as quickly as it does if I put it out from under the cover.
We live in Oregon and I almost never get frozen waters, so far this winter I’ve had only two days of a thin layer of ice that had already been broken when I came out. The lowest temperature it gets at night is about 36. But I will keep these tips in mind if I have a night where it gets to freezing. As always thanks for the wonderful video! 🐔❤️😁
Yes it is a pain!! We get to -30 C (-22 F) at times. I splurged on the $80 heated chicken waterer and its so worth it to not have to fight with the ice bowls every morning when I'd rather be in bed!
@@jandcschwartz no it's plastic. But we are still in mild to slightly below freezing weather here. We shall see how it performs in really cold weather. Apparently you shouldn't have the wateter in an open exposed area to wind ect.
Nice tips great video I have the rubber water tubs it’s easy to get the frozen water out but after a week or two of below freezing I have an ice mound that takes months to go away I’m going to try the salt bottle and the ping pong balls thank you for sharing keep warm love that little tree 🌳 adorable 🥰
I used a "greenhouse hoop house" with predator proofing and a tarp over it. Fast forward to all the snow we got, and it partially collapsed during the night while I was asleep. The girls can still use it, but I'm trying to figure out a way to easily fix it. I tell you this because you don't live that far from me and I don't want that problem for you. Love your videos. I have a similar set-up. Had to take steps to prevent that snow-induced roof collapse- I saved a bunch of maple branches from tree work I had done in the fall, cut the branches to size with a pruning saw, and installed them as weight bearing columns along the center(ish) of the tarped cattle-panel “hoop roof.” They didn’t need to be the perfect height, because if one was pretty close I could find a lower rib to wedge it under, or use more scrap lumber as footings to adjust height and prevent the column from sinking into the soil. (Dimensional lumber -2x4’s-would work fine too, just be more expensive.) I just let gravity hold them in place because I’m the only one in there, but if kids were going in I’d attach things better so the columns wouldn’t fall if a kid knocked into them. Before I did this I’d be going out to scrape snow off all through the night, so I’m happy I found an easy solution.
Even though everyone says not to keep the water in the coop, I am guilty of that. I have been doing that for 7 years now and we also keep a safe radiant heater (that's made for chicken coops) that warms the inside of the coop by about 10 degrees. We use a huge heated dog bowl and we set that on top of a concrete block to keep it high enough for the birds. I can tell you that if the temperature falls down below zero or single degrees, the radiant heater doesn't even make a difference, it is still so cold that your nostrils freeze. Our covered run is also wrapped in thick, clear tarps and we put a good 4" pine shavings to keep the hens happy. My hens will not come out in the snow and they never have. We have kept the door open but they refuse to step on anything that's cold. I guess they are spoiled.
Maybe bury a hose a few feet underground and run a low flow pump that recirculate it. Usually underground pipes do not freeze due to the heat exchange taking place between the pipe and the ground.
Currently I have in my flock, my old chickens; 1 Leghorn, 1 brun popular, and my new chickens from 1 week ; 2 black australorps. My 4 birds are in my cottage together. Do you think it’s a good match?
Hot water actually freezes faster than cold water. That’s why you should never pour a bucket of hot water on your sidewalk outside, because it will freeze almost instantly and turn into black ice. So, I wouldn’t give hot water to your chickens, just lukewarm.

I finally bought plastic heated pads for chicken water containers. Very disappointing. I'm still going to have to be breaking up ice every couple of hours when it gets below zero. The heaters have let the water freeze and we've only been in the teens. They work better with an almost empty container. It will probably be better than nothing.
How about piting apple cider vinager in the water it want freeze like water or maybe some olive oil in it I know alcohol will kill them but acv will not or olive oil

For real! I put it off for so long but after I put electricity in my yard i was like why didn’t I do this sooner? SO much easier.
Is it one of those galvanized heaters? I bought the plastic ones and they don't work well. I'm thinking maybe I need to get the metal kind.
