The Recordophone, a magnetic wire recorder
This month the Swiss National Sound Archives present the Recordophone, a device capable of reproducing sounds recorded on magnetized steel wire.
As early as 1888, just a few years after Edison's invention of the phonograph, the American Oberlin Smith devised a process for recording sounds by magnetizing a metal wire, but no device of this technology has come to us.
In 1896, the Danish engineer Valdemar Poulsen built the Telegraphone, a sound recorder on magnetized steel wire: in essence, the forerunner of the magnetic tape recorder. The machine offered modest recording quality and was therefore preferably used for spoken word recordings (such as theatre, lectures).
It was perfected from the 1920s onwards in Germany and then in the USA, in particular by the Webster-Chicago factory, enabling better listening quality. The recordophone was to be found in the bourgeois living rooms of the time, usually embedded in an 'audio' cabinet also equipped with a radio receiver. In the 1950s, however, this technology was soon supplanted by magnetic tape recording.
The Recordophone in the Swiss National Sound Archives runs on thermionic valves and was produced by the company Autophon SA of Solothurn probably in the late 1940s. The machine was completely refurbished in the workshops of the Swiss National Sound Archives and is fully functional.

We had the Webster that looked exactly like this, embedded in an audio cabinet and with a radio receiver. Somehow, the radio and phono/wire amp were hooked up together, so that it actually broadcast what you were listening to. We had a lady across the street from us who could tune in to our Webster and hear which music we were listening to.
Absolute artwork ! A beautiful machine/instrument.Thanks for showing us !🌞
wonderful!
That would made reeling in that 8 lbs. large mouth bass even MORE entertaining!

Nice tune :D
What great machinery ✨
Can also play 78s.
And 33s
@@danek_hren How?
@@verkehrsteilnehmer-berlin why can't it? They all have the same hole in the center.
@@danek_hren other grooves? Other speed?
@@verkehrsteilnehmer-berlin that's the point, just slow it down to the correct speed.
The most famous wire recordings I know of are those of influential jazz guitarist Charlie Christian jamming at Minton's in 1941, recorded by university student Jerry Newman, who was a big fan of Christian's. The quality of the recordings is extraordinary. There are uploads of them on RUclips - one seems to have slapback echo added to it, but the others are good. Here's one.

Didnt Colonel Hogan have one of those ?
Or was it Klink ?
Hogan had the home-made wire recorder that used a sewing kit box. I think there was an episode where a commercially produced German wire recorder was played in Klink's office; it might have been brought in by Major Hochstetter.
tare!
Looks like a hard drive.
The frequency response is mostly mid-range, didn't hear any bass.
You have to be in the presence of the machine to hear what it really sounds like.
Is this the actual recording? If so its actually ok
Cooli Musig. I het no Atribsrädli für das Grät und wüsst no e komplets Grät....
Und funktioniert dieses auch?
Same standard as Webster Chicago?
Mmmm😊
“This song sounds french”
whats the song of this?
