    I have not been really happy with my Sony A77 or A77ii ... until NOW. WOW! I finally found a combination that I can afford that can produce AMAZING images and focus fast and accurately. This is the combination I had hoped for when I lay down a couple grand.

    This is now my complete go-to kit: A77ii, Sony 16-50 2.8 and the Minolta 80-200 2.8 APO HS. Amazing combination, and incredible quality even at 2.8. I've used the 80-200 on my A700 too and it was incredible. Built like a tank (it actually ripped the mount off my A700 when I dropped it - lens was fine though!) and really pretty heavy. I'm still trying to work out the best Track Duration setting though, I'm still not sure which one is best, but you're right, it's not 'Mid'! As this is a fantastic sports lens, the focus limiter is amazing with it. I had to shoot through a spectator net at a volleyball tournament recently, and with the limiter I was able to still use auto focus. When I also shot with manual focus though, the focus peaking was the next best thing ever - I have no idea how any other system shoots sports with manual focus without the peaking (well, I do, but this is way better!). It is a great combo, well done!
    I do also have a 2x teleconverter, it may even be the exact one you have (actually, it's the Vivitar Series 1). I've found that while I CAN get some amazing shots with it, the number of sharp and correctly focussed images is a lot lower than without, and with the 24 megapixels I can often get just as good a result by cropping. I'm still working with it though. Once I start shooting with a monopod that may make a difference, but your point about the SSS is one I hadn't thought of - I'll be trying with it turned off this weekend!
    As for fringing though, I've found it to be fairly severe, and much worse with the teleconverter, but that's when pixel-peeping. Lightroom has some fantastic tools to get rid of it though, so I'm way past worrying about it. Thanks for posting, nice job!

    You did the right thing to get rid of the Sigma lens, the optics are great but the mechanics if the lens leave a lot to be desired. Many many moons ago had my own camera shop & even the camera reps for Sigma admitted that because of lack of spares they had to canabilise new lenses to repair customers faulty ones. Too many people ignore Sony cameras which is such a shame, I've been a fan of Minolta (now Sony) all of my photographic life, the cameras & lenses are superb, I wouldn't change the marque for anything (maybe for a Lumix G9) but there I am 73.

    Today arrived the lens, it's basically like new, even the steel smells and the rubber reeks like new car tires, there's not a single paint scratch. I tested it and it's stupid sharp from 2.8 to 22, and the autofocus is so accurate and feeling the torque really gives it an organic experience (plus I don't need to cope with the "ultrasonic autofocus" modern lenses have, it hurts my hearing especially Sony and Sigma SSM lenses)

    You sir have now experienced the "Minolta colors" and what it means. I too have this setup, only with the 200mm 2.8 HS prime. With the Mark II's AF limit feature, one can dial in a bracketed distance further speeding up the already fast AF speed. Be sure to get the 2nd gen. 2x or 1.4 x TC to maintain the HS focus gearing.

    But I also have EA4 adapter I use on A7S and A6400, sports photos with EA4 dont make sense. The AF speed of EA4 is behind A77ii, but for portraits and street its fine. Great review! I've been looking for a SONY 70-200MM F/2.8 G SSM but the used prices are still really high. Was also interested in this older Minolta version and found this review very informative. Most of the functionality (focus limiter, manual focus switch, etc.) will be similar to the A77II when used on my A99. Currently I'm using a Minolta 70-210 F4 which is a pretty good lens but wanted something better. Love the look of the old Minolta lenses and especially this one (MINOLTA 80-200MM F/2.8 APO G HIGH SPEED). Thanks for sharing this review, great job.

    I have bought exactly same combo (80-200 HS+Tamron 2X Tele-con.) after viewing this video. This setup works incredibly well, way beyond my expectation of late 1980's optics, I would prefer it over the other similar lens that I have used: Canon 70-200mm F4 IS. Especially for the teleconverter part, you won't really notice the loss of sharpness unless you are doing side by side pixel peeping. Very happy to save extra $ from buying a 70-400mm G lens, which will not be as practical as 80-200mm for daily usage. (May buy it later anyway if I am really into shooting aircrafts)

    Thanks Yana Goya. You do not seem to have replies enabled so I will reply here. The general rule of thumb for motion blur from lens movement when shooting hand held is to keep the shutter speed at least the inverse of the lens focal length. So at 80mm that would be minimum 1/80 sec shutter speed. At 200mm that would be minimum 1/200 sec shutter speed. You might need to adjust for crop factor though since 200mm on a crop sensor is actually about 300mm on a full frame camera, but I am not sure about that. This is why really wide lenses are better in low light, because you can shoot much slower shutter speeds. But this will not impact any motion blur from the motion of the subject of course.
    Here are some sports images I took with the Minolta 80-200 HS and the A77ii. (Canadian Men's Cycle Cross National Championship race here in Winnipeg) They are around 1/320 second. I could have shot much faster to completely freeze the action but that was just fast enough to get the peoples faces sharp and still make the spraying sand blurry to add more life to the action.

    Nice video. Concerning image stabilization, I believe what you found with the lens is actually a constant with all lenses. IS does give you an advantage, but there is always a slight trade off. If you are using a long lens shooting action handheld, it does become almost a necessity. Post processing is the only way to get some of the sharpness back.

    Thanks Emph. Obviously I am not into making videos or video editing but I just found there is a real lack of info out there so i just wanted to share my thoughts. I LOVE this lens but to be honest I thought the IBIS would work better than it does with this lens. In hind sight, for similar price I might have gone with the new Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 SP DI. It has weather resistance and the IS might work better. AF would be quieter than the Minolta but likely a bit slower.
    I shot the Canadian National Cycle Cross here in Winnipeg a while back and I got lots of strange looks form the pro photographers. They were like... what the heck???.. a 1984 lens on a 2014 camera??? Pretty cool that the combo really works, and works really well. I don't know any other camera for any price that shoots 24mpx, in RAW at 12fps with full time AF tracking, focus limiter, even with a 20 year old lens. I know there are some Point&Shoots out now but nothing with a shallow depth of field lens.

      +marcelo campoamor - Yes, my understanding is that the telecomverter has a chip and that is also why some lenses are slower on some cameras. That is also why this combo is so fast - the AF drive motor is in the camera body and so is the AF sensors. Full onboard AF control without the latency lag of going through the lens mount contacts or the lens chip or the telecomverter chip.

    How interesting - about the stabilization. I haven't tried any action shooting with 77m2+80-200 yet, only had one low light concert shoot and 80-200 preformed a lot worse than minolta 85/1.4 in similar situation(obviously not quite a straighforward comparison, prime-zoom, appeture and so on, but the difference was way too drastic). I figured it was because I used relatively long shutter speeds while this camera+lens combo is quite heavy for me, resulting in unsteady hands... However even on sharper photos microcontrast wasn't great. Now I'll do some testing on different fls with stab on and off.
    Question - if shooting action without stabilization, what would be the slowest shutter speed you'd recommend?

    If that lens is as sharp as you say you do not need the teleconverter because you will be able to blow the image up and not lose to much noticeable detail....Using a converter loses too much light and effects the clarity and sharpness of the image.....Plus the Sony's have an excellent built in teleconverter on their A mount bodies and some E mounts ........

    • @PolioVitruvius
      @PolioVitruvius  6 лет назад +2

      Sorry, but I disagree. The teleconverter reduces resolution but that does NOT mean the resolution of the image reaching the sensor is degraded below the resolution of the sensor. Even with the teleconverter the combination lens and teleconverter outresolve the sensor. So you gain 2x magnification without noticeable resolution loss.

    I thought about your reasoning around f5.6 as trasmision and not as the iris position of 5.6 but 2.8. When the camera shows 5.6 do so because the mechanical leg of the apertura stay in the 5.6 state otherwise will showr f 2.8.

    • @PolioVitruvius

      Sanjeeb Manandhar Are you doing long exposures? Then it takes another shot the same length with the shutter closed right after each shot and then subtracts the noise in the second shot from the pixels in the first shot. That takes a while.

    Wow, thanks for this review! I thought I was doomed for good with my A77ii and the Sigma HSD II paired. I was really interested to hear what you had to say about this lens, esp. since I have had nothing but trouble with the Sigma (poor bokeh, un-sharp areas of the frame, blurry wide open, focus hunting, etc.). I shoot women's roller derby with that same combo and did not want to go another full season stopped down at f4.5 just to get a sharp plane of focus. Then this summer, I sent the lens back to Sigma for focus adjustment and calibration and it does not look any better, in fact, A77ii microfocus adj is even farther off from zero(!). With the $3.2K A99II out now, I did not want to spend $1.5K on a Sony G 70-200/2.8 if I can get the same results with the Minolta.
    One question though: How does the zoom performance of the Minolta feel compared with the Sigma? I really like the tactile rubbery finish of the Sigma and the zoom ring can be operated with one finger as I hold the focus point on the skater's head.

      The Sigma zoom is smoother. But having a nice smooth zoom and getting lots of out of focus shots is more frustrating than a less smooth zoom and lightning fast pin point accurate focus. Minolta is not quiet though. Not good for weddings. But sports it is amazing. When I had the Sigma I tried to get a high speed series of shots of my dogs running towards me with continues focus tracking. It never worked well with the Sigma and I thought is was that the Sony a77ii was the weakest link. But then I tried the Minolta and it had no problem at all keeping up with anything.

      IMHO, A77ii was not the weakest link, as I had similar problems shooting an A57 and that Sigma lens, with the downside that I could not AF micro-focus adjust those cameras but they still needed to be shot at f4.5 to be even pleasantly sharp .I ordered the Minolta 80-200 G from Japan based on the strength of this video review and Dyxum forum reviews so I should have it any day now. Thanks again for the detailed discussion of your experiences.

      Ivan Singer Please let me know how you like the Minolta when you get it. I find it a bit loud and almost jerky but that is just the price I pay for a really fast focus mechanism unless I spend three times more money.

      So, I got the Minolta G lens today and spent about an hour testing it out. My copy is clean and free of paint chipping, even on the tripod foot. You may be right about the A77ii being the critical factor. The first time I used it, AF Micro Adjust was zeroed out and every frame I shot on C mode was off focus (I used 30mph moving cars driving past my house). Then, took the camera inside, setup a couple of bounced flash slaves and shot the packing slip against the wall which had many fine details across the page. Here is what I noticed:
      1) Both lenses behaved similarly at f2.8 indoors at the image center, the Minolta having noticeably better corner to corner sharpness even at the intersection of thirds
      2) Both lenses have some purple CA against backlit sky, but the Minolta is easier to control and less color variation
      3) Minolta is definitely noisier and but AF very responsive, and torque is not bad at all..Sigma is very quiet but cannot lock focus easily (gross movements as it hunts)
      4) Both lenses seemed sharpest at AF MA -20, leading me to believe that the A77ii camera may need some internal adjustment or that the pellicle mirror is misaligned slightly
      In a few weeks, I'll get to check the sharpness in some real world sports conditions, but I have much more confidence that I will have more keepers at AF MA -20 with the G lens than the sigma. I will also be able to try a larger working aperture, maybe f3.5 or f4, for indoor sports which will allow me to decrease power and allow for 3-4 lo continuous frames before I lose recycle power.

      I had a chance to take the Minolta to a live theater dance performance and the IQ was easily as good or better as my Nikkor 80-200/2.8 AF-D on my Nikon D300, and with the IS turned off, at 1/320s or 1/400s . Thanks for the advice to turn off the SteadyShot! With SS off, the micro-contrast was really excellent, providing some really great ARW files to work with. Even shooting straight into the side stage lights provided some very striking images with just a little flair to control. By comparison, my Nikkor lens AF is slower, slightly less sure-footed to lock on, and is a much heavier and longer lens at 77mm filter thread, but the A77ii is quieter and can shoot a much longer sequence run before the buffer fills (that's really not a surprise). However, the screw-drive on the Minolta AF was conspicuously loud and not easy to hide in quieter moments, so I used the AF hold button on the lens as much as possible. I will say that the AF Track Duration on Low (1) meant that the lens readjusts focus a little too much without the benefit of being more accurate frame to frame. That is on subjects that are moving closer or farther away, not laterally, I'll probably move it back to Medium (3) or Mid-Low (2). Just my two cents, not a scientific opinion.

    Over all how do you like the camera? I have the sony a58 and want to upgrade, hoping it worth the money for macro and wildlife photography. Trying to talk myself into it, moneys burning a whole in my pocket lol

    • @PolioVitruvius
      @PolioVitruvius  9 лет назад

      Still LOVE the camera. I found however that the lens actually makes a really big difference. More then I thought. Not that I want to talk you out of it, but for macro you might like to just get better glass first. Glass that would also work on the A77ii when you get it. I think you might be surprised. I was shooting with the Sony DT 16-50mm f2.8 lens which is pretty good and then got the Minolta 80-200 f2.8 which is also very good and I though that was about the best the camera sensor could put out. I was wrong. I put the Bower 85mm f1.4 lens on and I got a lot more clarity from the sensor. So now I am spoiled and I only want better glass. haha.

    Is this combination fast enough to shoot action? Do you have good results shooting dog running fast towards you? Focusing on head? :)

      @PolioVitruvius  9 лет назад

      Jan Pončík Absolutely. The lens is almost too fast. I had to set the tracking speed in the camera down to low because it was just too hyper. On low it seem to stick with the subject better.

      There are a few on ebay. Unfortunately since posting this video the price has increased a fair bit. And the new A99ii will increase the price too.

      Thanks for the quick response. You are right, I found some in the US and Japan - before I was looking only on the German Ebay. By the way, thank you also for the video! I would have never found out that this lense is most suitable for the a77ii.

    • @PolioVitruvius

      It would but you would only have the middle AF points and I am not sure if the AF motor in the adapter is as powerful as the one in the A mount cameras. Wish I could test this.

    is this thing worth adapting to the A7R ii? i want f2/8, but i don't want to pay $2600 for the fail master lens. i tried using a canon 70-200 is ii with both metabones and sigma adapters, but they hunt all the damn time.

    • @PolioVitruvius
      @PolioVitruvius  7 лет назад

      slomoshv Not sure. I had a friend try one of my alpha lenses on his A7 with the LA EA 4 and the AF was much slower. The AF drive motor is in the body of the camera. Or in your case the adapter. Might not be the same. On my A77ii it actually jerks it is so powerful. I am saving up for the A99ii although the sensor will likely out resolve these lenses.

    Do you think this lens auto focus will work on a sony a3000 or will I need a adapter

    • @PolioVitruvius
      @PolioVitruvius  9 лет назад +2

      John Smith You need an adapter. The NEX cameras are smaller because they don't have a mirror and I don't think they have the shaft drive AF motor in the camera body either. Many of the NEX lenses are longer to make up for the different lens back focus distances. So you can get a basic adapter just to compensate for the lens back focus distance. That would essentially be a macro tube. Here -www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003Y2YE5S/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=jhvitu-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B003Y2YE5S
      Then a step up is the adapter with electronic connections like the LA-EA1. This will allow the use of SAM and SSM lenses with AF motors in them. It does not have the mirror with the contrast detect AF sensors or the shaft drive motor for the older lenses like this Minolta 80-200. Here -
      www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=as_li_qf_sp_sr_il_tl?ie=UTF8&keywords=LA-EA1&tag=jhvitu-20&index=aps&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325
      Then a step up further is the LA-EA2 which has the translucent mirror and the extra phase detect AF sensors. I think it also has the shaft drive AF motor built in. Here -
      www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005K8AUYI/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=jhvitu-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B005K8AUYI
      They are up to the LA-AE4 by now I think for full frame E mount cameras.
      So now you are paying an extra $400 and your camera is at least as big and heavy as my A77ii. That is why I went with the A mount from the beginning.

    • @PolioVitruvius
      @PolioVitruvius  9 лет назад

      You need an adapter and then it will not be as fast, I tried it with the LAEA4 and it was a fair bit slower.
