  • Hi, this is Michelle. We will study Schubert’s Serenade in d minor. Franz Schubert, the son of a schoolmaster, was born in a suburb of Vienna in 1797. Schubert’s beautiful soprano voice gained him admittance as a choirboy in the emperor’s chapel (The group is called Vienna Choir Boy today). His teachers were astonished by the shy dreamy boy’s musicality. One of them remarked that Franz “had learned everything from God.”
    Schubert suffered terribly during his later years. In 1822 he contracted syphilis, a death sentence before the discovery of antibiotics. His dying wish was to be buried near the master he worshipped above all others-Beethoven. Schubert was 31 when he died in 1828. His wish was granted.
    Both Beethoven and Schubert are transitional figures between Classicism and Romanticism. Schubert’s symphonies and music follow in the Classical tradition of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven; his songs, however, reflect the Romantic spirit.
    The original version of Serenade in d minor is a lied for solo voice and piano. There is 4 bars introduction. The melody starts in bar 5 to 8, which is answered by the piano in bar 9 and 10, is phrase 1 (1st stanza). This pattern repeats 4 times. In bar 29 to 36, there is a bridge connecting to the 2nd stanza. The question-answer pattern continues for 4 more phrases in the 2nd stanza, from bar 37 to 60. In bar 61/62, 63/64, the left hand imitates the right hand. Coda starts in bar 73, and the music gradually slows down and fades away.

      Thank you for replying so promptly. I have another question: You said this serenade is D minor, why you don't call it F Major? Sorry, I have a very limited music background.

    • @forteml01
      @forteml01  4 года назад

      TC, The music is with one flat---B flat. If it is in the major, then it is F major. But the music starts and ends on its relative minor which is d minor. That's the way to identify the key. You can also tell by listening to it. It is in d minor all the time.😊

      @@forteml01 Thank you so much! I also watched your "Fur Elise" tutorial lesson and you emphasize the A minor at the end. It does make sense to me now.
