      In 120 sq. ft. there is just not enough air to run a heater indoors. Something that doesn't use interior air and exhausts combustion outside was a more workable solution for us. The thermostat will let us focus on other chores until we are ready to commit to a wood burner. Dense trees and grasses will also require consideration on how we heat our home.

    I've had one of these in a rental unit for 12+ years. About five of those years I had to have it serviced in the fall at first start-up for various nickel and dime repairs. Now the pilot keeps going out every couple days. We put a thermal coupler on it, no dice. I kind of regret not spending the extra money for the Rinnai back then, won't make that mistake this time.

    • @SpencersMountain
      @SpencersMountain  2 года назад +2

      Guess that is why we need more videos like this, so people better understand what they may be getting into. I also chose to go with a low cost heater vs one that cost twice the money. You get what you pay for apparently. Thank you for sharing, it may help others with their decisions. Hope you get your heater sorted out.

    • @UberKrispy

      @@SpencersMountain I did order a new Rinnai heater. I shouldn't bad mouth the Williams because it did last over 10 years, which is about the standard lifespan of these small heaters. Yes it's not very efficient but the area it was heating was a small studio apartment, and the heat bill was about $40 per month in January & February. That's rock bottom cheap.
      Your whole video library is excellent. A real treasure trove of useful information. I wish you & yours the absolute best.

    Very helpful video. I have a 200 square foot cabin at 9000 feet. There is a high altitude kit for up to 8000 feet. Do you think this furnace with the 8000 feet kit will operate at 9000 feet?

    My heater is now installed and works great. But, I have the same issue with the igniter not working right out of the box. Using a match but geez, seems like a design issue.

    • @SpencersMountain
      @SpencersMountain  2 года назад

      The ignitor bracket on the Williams heater is a joke! The bracket is too flimsy to support pressing the button. The spark on my heater seems decent, but will not light the pilot. Just the slightest flame from a butane lighter sets off my pilot from the lighting window. Even from a distance outside the lighting window. I wonder if anyone has one that works.

  • @MichaelDillin
    @MichaelDillin 2 года назад +1

    Mine stopped working. I was out of town. So I called the guy that did a nice clean job of putting it in for me. He determined that it was the Thermopcouple assembly (or thermopile?) He changed it and it worked.
    Then next year or 2 years later i was outta town and same thing would not light or stay lit (don't remember) the original guy was not very agreeable anymore so I called the HVAC contractor I used on other jobs. He sent his best trouble shooter out and determined it was the gas valve this time. Over $300-400 for the valve and had a real hard time getting replacement parts. Cost $500 to $600 to fix
    Now it's 3 years later and it's broke again.
    Pilot lights while I hold in the selector knob as soon as a let go of knob flame dies...
    Ugh. I have installed 4 of these and they all have a simular problem usually when I'm OUT OF TOWN!! SO FRUSTRATING the ones from 40 years ago just worked and worked made in usa and worked for decades. God bless CCP lol🤣

    • @SpencersMountain
      @SpencersMountain  2 года назад +1

      Sorry you have had so many issues with these heaters. Thank you for taking the time to comment so others can learn you experiences. I am guessing you indeed know how to operate since you own several...just wanted to point out that when lighting pilot, you need to hold pilot position on valve and knob pressed in for up to a minute for pilot to stay lighted. The thermocouple has to heat in order to create enough electrical current to hold the valve open. Only way to know is a voltmeter sensitive enough to measure the 750 millivolt current. For such simple dev ices, these heaters can apparently be somewhat picky in operation. Again, thanks for sharing, your comment may certainly help someone with their decisions. And, thank you for watching.

      @@SpencersMountain you could be on to something I usually read directions 🤣 maybe I will time how long I am holding down the pilot knob. Thanks for pointer. I usually can get them lit. Is it longer for one of these than a water heater or same? Same right?

      That is unfortunate! As with any machine there are always quality issues. I am not a qualified heater tech. Best advice is to have a qualified professional check your furnace. That said I like to troubleshoot my own equipment. A troubleshooting chart should be easy enough to locate. Could be a simple cheap thermal coupler issue or a more complex gas pressure problem. My heater has an alignment issue where the spark can not light the pilot, requiring lighting through the port. Hope you can sort out your pilot issue.

    i bought the 30,000 btu model and have been looking at the instructions while waiting for it to come. can the gas supply enter the unit from the bottom of the cover? that's what it looked like y'all did. in the instructions i have, it looks like the gas supply has to enter the unit from behind the cover, coming thru the wall, which would be more work for me based on the existing gas line, so if there was a way for the gas supply to come from the bottom for my installation that would be preferable. Thx!

    You guys rock. Looking at the same furnace for my 1938 tamarack log cabin on Lake Superior in the UP of Michigan. Only question is how the direct vent will react to high winds coming off the lake in November and December. Any experience you can share with operating the furnace in high winds?

    • @SpencersMountain
      @SpencersMountain  3 года назад

      I wasn't finding a lot of information on this furnace so thought it important to share what I could figure out. Our installation is fairly protected with all the trees and nearby building. I understand the concern regarding the vent. The simplistic design of the furnace should not be a big issue in wind as the vent and baffling for intake and exhaust seem to be of decent design. The furnace itself is of poor design for efficiency. Stand alone, it is good for putting heat into a place with no need for power, however, I think using a powered fan would be worth the effort from our solar system to push heat off of the heater and improve efficiency. We will most likely have updates to the things we use in our videos if it helps others with their needs. Thank you for watching!

    You forgot to install roxul Mineral wool high temperature insulation around your air intake pipe in the wall , so now around the heater the wall will get cold , plus , for extra protection for rainy days outside you should of put caulking around the vent cap , plus the thermostat you installed is a cheap one , you should of installed a digital thermostat, and one major thing that little heater is NOT ! Strong enough to heat that garage , you would need at least 35 000 Btu’s

    • @SpencersMountain
      @SpencersMountain  2 года назад

      The heater is installed per manufacturer instructions. Insulation per that installation. The vent cap was caulked on the outside. The Honeywell thermostat is indeed cheap and provides poor heat regulation. It does not require batteries making the whole heat system electric free. Propane is the only energy involved. Our heater is in a 120 square foot off-grid cabin so 14000 btu is plenty of heat.

    Is the pilot stay on all the way 24/7? My pilot is on and wall controller is off but the heater is still giving off heat from the top. First time using, I just installed it. Any tips or suggestions, should I let it run for a while

    • @SpencersMountain
      @SpencersMountain  3 года назад +1

      Yes, the pilot light runs constantly when you want heat from thermostat setting. These are not very sophisticated heater. You have to light the pilot when you want heat and turn the pilot and gas or LP off when you do not want heat. The first time or two that the heater runs there will be odor from oil in metal and paint that may require venting room. After that, there should be no odors. These are not efficient heaters and leaving the pilot running without a real need for heat will use gas for no benefit.

    • @jcespinoza6293
      @jcespinoza6293 3 года назад

      Great thanks for the reply. I have this in my ADU unit that has a tenant, my old long wall gas heater would have a small fire lit (the pilot) 24/7 then when we turned out thermostat on the heat would come on until it reached the temperature we set it to and go back to a small flame (just the pilot lit). Does this heater work the same way? Meaning the flame(pilot) just lit enough to stay on until I turn up the thermostat then it would kick on.

    • @SpencersMountain
      @SpencersMountain  3 года назад

      @@jcespinoza6293 missed this. Yes the pilot light stays on after you light it. The pilot stays on until you turn it off. The thermostat gets it power from the pilot light heat. So, pilot has to be on for thermostat to function.

      I am sorry I had not seen this comment. I used a two wire condutor specifically intended for thermostat usage. Only one red and one white wire. I believe my wire is 20 gauge with up to 18 recommended. This wire carries a very small current (valves usually rated at 750 millivolt for operation). We mounted the thermostat about 6 feet away from the heater about 5 feet high from the floor. Appears to be working OK in that location for us.
