- 10 weeks until Election Day, and the Democrats are on offense in the Sun Belt. Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz reunited for the first time since accepting the Democratic nomination for a tour of south Georgia. The campaign aims to cut into Donald Trump's margins in the state by stumping in rural areas this week. Akayla Gardner, Eugene Daniels and Greg Bluestein join.

Harris/Walz resonate with Americans, me included, because there is a palpable sense of normalcy about them. To use Tim Walz's favorite analogy, they feel like neighbors who will help out when we're in trouble. The bus tour, visiting mom and pop stores and restaurants, talking to average citizens who feel overlooked , then actively listening and CARING about what they have to say, taking notes of how they might make things better for poor and middle class areas. Stuff like that means everything to regular people! It's a stark contrast to the other guy, whose campaign slogan might as well be "Vote for Me Then Get Lost Because I Won't Need You Anymore!"

As a Dem in NC I can say confidently that no amount of Democratic Party support for Cheri Beasley would have gotten her elected. She was the wrong candidate - pretty boring, no social media skills or presence. It should have been Jeff Jackson running but some higher-ups in the party pressured him to drop out of the Senate race and go for the House instead. People love him, both in person (he did a tour of all 100 counties) and on social media. Get better candidates, get better results. That's why Kamala and Tim are going to flip this state!

Kamala is not Hillary. She has a broader appeal I think.
You'll notice that it's the end of August and not the end of October. They are testing the waters to see how much effort to put into Georgia (and NC) in October. No sense in spending time in rural Georgia if you have no chance to win Georgia, no matter how inclusive you'd like to be. Visiting every state in 1960 was a mistake for Richard Nixon, as was visiting every county in Texas a strategic mistake for Beto O'Rourke.
Plan B can always be to focus on WI, MI and PA with a dollop of AZ and NV. Those five states would presumably give H and W a win with 292 EV's, not including GA and NC. Add in GA and NC and ME-2, which suddenly seems competitive, and you get to the presumed Dem. maximum of 325 EV's (213 left for Trump in that case, i.e. his minimum.)
The fact that Trump and Vance are also hitting NC and GA, where they wouldn't have had to play defense against Biden this time around, shows they're scared. If you can't hold on to states you previously won, it's hard to flip states the other party won last time. Trump won only 305 EV's in 2016. Take away 32 and he squeaks past 270. No more room for surprises anywhere else. He couldn't afford to lose any of the other battleground states. If you see Trump campaigning (not resting or fund-raising) in FL, you know they know they are in real trouble. Don't expect that to happen. Nice dream, though.

One of the starkest differences between politics in the US and that in every other western-style democracy, is that America has so many areas where the winner is totally predictable. In this year's general election in the UK, districts which voted 70 percent for one party in 2019, changed party this year. 300 of the 650 districts changed. In France this year, 42 percent of districts changed. America is weird in this area.
Yeah, it unfortunately comes down to the fact that we have a binary system and that enables states that have larger metropolitan areas or larger rural areas to be dominated by 1 party. Those swing states that have a bit of both are the only places that oscillate according to the mood of the overall electorate. With the current level of partisanship, I don't think we'll see large swaths of the electorate supporting one party for a long time. There was a time before the current hyper-partisanship where you could get large swings from one party to the other. Not in the current climate so that almost guarantees those states leaning towards either party will never be in play.
