Being able to make something good for not only $10, but also improve upon it when you can is amazing. Great work again Ben! Thanks for all you do to inspire us!
Yep. This is amazing work both the build and video work. Way to capitalize on the good sunsets lately. The pace of this video was perfect. If you dont get a couple hundred thousand views ill be very suprised. Great work all around!!
I was looking for a shaft for a spear, it took me multiple visits to the hardwarestore near me, rummaging through every board they had to find one piece of beech wood with straight grain. Nothing besides beech, no hickory, no ash, no oak. Really jealous seeing that selection at Menards!
Fantastic video Ben! Not only is the bow great but your cinematography was on a new level here! Question. How do you tell when a bow blank is ready to be bent to a recurve form?
You’re right it is important. The growth rings are perpendicular to the back of the bow because it’s made from a crosscut board. So instead of chasing a ring, I picked a board that had growth ring lines that run the full length of the bow. I have unbroken fibers from one end to the other just like if I chased a ring, but instead of chasing a ring the work was in board selection. There was only one board in that size and species that had good enough grain to work.
You might want to look into getting a hand stitched rasp like a Liogier or Auriou. They are expensive, but they cut better and smoother and don't leave as many marks in the wood because the teeth don't line up. Great build.
That wood selection was nice af... Where i live in the UK we try and use facebook for hardwood because it's so bloody expensive here. Variation is lacking too. If I want hickory i either pay an arm and a leg or i can break down an old wardrobe that i got of fb marketplace and upcycle the wood
You can get the proper spine out of any wood, but the softer it is the bigger the diameter needs to be. I would take a properly spined arrow to the store and bend a bunch of dowels and bend the arrow to see what seems to have the closest bending strength.
Menards is an upper midwestern chain, headquartered in Wisconsin, and yes they are an excellent store for hardwood selection compared to national chains.
Nice bow, question for you, before you cut length off the bow you said you had the limbs down to 1/4” how did you achieve your #50 draw weight? By the bend of the recurve bend? I also love hickory for building longbows but with limb thickness tapered down to even 3/8” I never achieve even #40 draw weight, be blessed and keep building them bows🙏🏻
YO! Great video as always. Have you given out the bow you made several weeks ago? Also, would a bow like this shoot normal compound bow arrows just fine rather than wooden arrows?
Yes I’ve given away 3 now to the email list. Gonna start giving away instagram as well. Yes carbon arrows like the ones you shoot out of a compound would be good too, but it’s better to have compressible feathers than plastic vane fletchings.
This is one of your best bow making videos! Awesome! Thank you!!
100% this is incredible, give's me so much motivation to pursue my dreams and not a salary
Master Bowyer in the making! Such an amazing bow!
I really loved this bow shape. One of the best videos of bow build and bow itself. watching you channel since last year.

Hey Ben, that is a beautiful bow! You never cease to amaze me!
Thanks!
Really enjoyed this video, great editing! That was a sweet bit of wood

My toddler was jabbering in the other room while watching this. @2:55 I was so confused wondering how it was coming through my phone! 😂
A beautiful piece of work, love the results of your dedication to doing it right!
Thanks!
less than $10 is crazyyyy
Remarkable work 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻, wish i could have one the bow from your build
Dude, that is awesome!!
Cool! Good job kid and I love the art work!
I've never had luck putting recurves on a hickory board, but I will try your technique next time. That bow is perfect!
It can be tricky, but the right board makes all the difference.
That would be cool to get one of yours bow and keep up the great work
dang this has me wanting to check my hardware store, thanks for the inspiration, subscribed!
He's back at it again 🔥
Thank you for another upload 🔥🔥🔥
Awesome! Simply awesome!
Nice work!!
Great save. It really did end up better because the handle broke
You can get River Cain for arrows at board store
Some one else left that information in your comments to get River Cain for arrows at the home Depot I got mine from Lowe's and they work good
Fantastic video Ben! Not only is the bow great but your cinematography was on a new level here!
Question. How do you tell when a bow blank is ready to be bent to a recurve form?
I usually recurve it when it’s bending smoothly against the floor.
MENARDS SUPREMACY! SAVE BIG MONEY! Great video dude
Thank you (Batman voice)
You can get River Cain for arrows at the hardware store and they work good I learned this from some one else in your comments from your last bow bord
Cool! next time I’m down there I’ll have to grab some. Thanks for the tip
What store? Big box Menards?for the arrows
@savagewolf1966 home Depot got mine at Lowe's some one else said it is comments in his outher video and they are right I had good luck
@@RichardCarver-v2f,thanks man
I notice you didn't follow a growth ring along the back of the bow. Does this weaken the bow, or is it not as important as I think it is?
You’re right it is important.

Turned out very nice. I used to go to menards when I was working a job in Ohio. they have a good selection of hardwood.
Hello friend, greetings from Colombia, what a good bow, I really like bows and arrows.
You might want to look into getting a hand stitched rasp like a Liogier or Auriou. They are expensive, but they cut better and smoother and don't leave as many marks in the wood because the teeth don't line up. Great build.
Awesome, that’s exactly what I need. Thanks for the tip
Dang sweet bow! Im headed to menards❤
Hickory is such a high quality wood
That wood selection was nice af... Where i live in the UK we try and use facebook for hardwood because it's so bloody expensive here. Variation is lacking too. If I want hickory i either pay an arm and a leg or i can break down an old wardrobe that i got of fb marketplace and upcycle the wood
That sounds like a fun video idea but a pain in real life.
Amazing build, looks like it shoots very well.enjoyed the build 👊🔥 did you make the arrows also?
Thanks! Yes I did. They are cedar shafts with goose feathers.
Did you purchase the arrow shafts at a big box store also?
Not those ones but you definitely can use hardware store dowels
@@Benjamin.stevens ,what wood would you chose for arrows

Hi, what was your stringfollow after shooting and standing braced for some time. Thanks. Great video
I still have tips in front of handle. It’s kind of a reflex now but no measurable string follow.
it would be cool to see a bow made out of jarrah
Love your passion. Two suggestions. Get a Shinto rasp and put some braces on your bench.
I will look into that! Thanks for the tips.

Good to know!

It might be 3/8. My measurements were rough. But it’s also only 61” long now so that helps. And you’re right the recurve helps as well.
YO! Great video as always. Have you given out the bow you made several weeks ago? Also, would a bow like this shoot normal compound bow arrows just fine rather than wooden arrows?

Hard maple is a brilliant bow wood. Sinew backed, I'd rate it equal in speed or above to osage.
Oh awesome I’ll try that next!
Why didn't you buy some of those fiberglass marking poles so you could make some arrows too?
No particular reason.
The amount of super-duper was barely bearable, but then you created a masterpiece that truly hits the mark. Kudos!
My wife pointed that out too. I spend to much time talking to a baby I guess.
Super motivational and incredibly encouraging algorithm boosting comment.
Sweet bow my bro. May the Lord Christ Jesus bless you and your family.
Thanks man, I appreciate it.
Super duper
I know, I had to edit myself🤦
