    Want this sort of mod in Golden Sun: The Lost Age? Check out this project:
    github.com/JackitK/Golden-Sun...
    It's not 1:1 in features, but things like early fast travel do exist in both and they are compatible with each other.

    I'm not exactly a modder in the sense of programming, so I would recommend checking out the community Discord for Golden Sun modding for specific modding relating questions. While the Discord is closed, you can find invite link on the forum's homepage.
    Overall, in the modding scene, I mostly focus on Golden Sun projects. A lot of that focus specifically with GS 1. Though I've also done a couple Paper Mario projects on the side. You can see the full list of projects I've done here:

    Updating this comment to be a quick FAQ for frequent comments I've gotten. If you haven't already, please read the video description as it has some details of other projects and where to find the general modding community for this game.
    "This is cool and all, but Lost Age really needed this more":
    Good news. A previous mod I made, "Lost Age 2oth Anniversary" got you cover. It has most of the features that this mod has, including earlier access to fast travel. Link in the video description.
    "Is this compatible with The Lost Age?"/"Really? Selling items? Won't that break the game if you transfer."
    Technically yes, it's compatible. But I would recommend playing Lost Age 20th Anniversary instead of the vanilla game if you plan on playing this mod. Not only do they share similar QOL features, but the latest version also assures that even new items will transfer between games.
    As for the mindset of selling items. Long story short. It was one of the features I imported from Dawn of Djinn without much thought, even though Dawn of Djinn was initially made as a GS1 exclusive ROM Hack, where I didn't have to think too hard about Lost Age compatibility. In hindsight, it probably not even worth promoting in the trailer now that I restricted what you can sell, but you can't edit RUclips videos (at least not well or easily) and I know you all would stop finding this if I removed and reupload it. It's kind of a freak accident that this trailer became so popular.
    "Can you implement X/Y/Z?"
    Long story short, maybe. Currently I'm trying to finish up other projects, but an update to this isn't completely off the table. Especially with the overwhelming reception this trailer has gotten.
    While I'd love to make Golden Sun the best it can be through QOL. I'm not a programmer, despite what this mod may make you think. Some concepts will be beyond my scope to implement. It was mostly just something I quickly threw together for the heck of it, based on features I already implemented in my bigger ROM Hack, Golden Sun Dawn of Djinn. So, if some choices seem a bit odd, they probably made more sense in that original project.
    I would recommend staying tune to either this channel, GitHub, or even my Discord channel. If I do make an update, I'll do anything I can to let you know there. Just remember that I won't be able to do everything.
    "If you don't code, how did you make this mod?"
    For the Avoid/Retreat changes, I used an old blank seed from the Golden Sun Randomizer and edited the ROM that seed created with the TLA editor tool. The editor is shocking straight forward and doesn't require any programming to use. There's even a better tool call "GS Magic" that's even more advance than what I use, but mostly built for editing The Lost Age. I would recommend looking up the Golden Sun Hacking Forums for more details on both these tools.
    forum.goldensunhacking.net/index.php
    "Did you fix the "auto defend" problem?"
    Speaking of not being a programmer, here's a perfect example of something beyond my scope. Based on previous discussions I've had with more advance members of the modding community, this is apparently would be a tricky thing even for them to implement. So sadly, this is not a feature of QOL and I highly doubt ever will be.
    Closing Thoughts:
    Kind of caught off guard by how much this blew up. It seems like the QOL part of the title might of bother some people, so I want to say sorry for that. I named it that because it's improved the game for me, but I get that it's not for everyone. That's okay, and if I could have thought of a better name that captured the changes I made, without coming off as "the objectively best way to play", I would have. Didn't really intend for this to be much more than a filler in between bigger projects and released stuff I still needed to make a trailer for. Highly recommend checking out my other works if you're not impressed with this.
    Besides that, thanks again for all the love. If you loved this or even if you've were craving something more out of a Golden Sun ROM Hack/mod, check out my Github. There's plenty of projects already released. Majority of them are Golden Sun related. Though I've dabbled a bit with Paper Mario as well. I've sprinkled a couple of those trailers throughout this video, or you can just see them here:
    ruclips.net/p/PLvJ4DiaQo6ZJyS9WBA2QAEb2Oyf10OoZ4
    That said I want to also give a shout-out to the Golden Sun modding Community. It's small and quiet but basically everything I'm able to do is thanks to them one way or another. Forums are here, but everyone mostly chats in the Discord server that you can find on the page.
    forum.goldensunhacking.net/index.php
    Again, if you want a full list of everything I've done so far, check this out below.

    WOW!! I just found this randomly today and I love it!! I remember as if it was yesterday when I traded my Mario Advance game for GS and despite some friends were thinking I was crazy, I don't regret it up to this day. I passed the game about 3 to 4 times, the same as Lost Age, and still conserve the game cartridges in my mother's house and a world map, that came inside the Lost Age box. Just seeing this makes me want to play the whole saga again!!

    Super random suggestion but I'm absolutely here for it

  • @Purpylon
    @Purpylon 5 месяцев назад +4

    For fun, i made a list of things i would change:
    1: Buff Quartz and other "chance to revive" Djinn so they never fail but revive at random HP.
    2: A bit too ambitious perhaps, but i would add a limited amount of tablet summons from The Lost Age. Think all except those guarded by bosses.
    3: Correct some spelling errors. Fire blessing -> Fire breath for example. (And in Lost Age, Formina Sage -> Fulminous Edge)
    4: Allow Djinn to recover even when the character holding them faints.
    5: Make healing Djinn recover a percentage instead of a flat amount (Not sure if they already do this though)
    6: Buff Mist, it's the worst attack Djinn.
    7: Allow renaming of the entire main cast by default instead of requiring 3x select.
    8: Make Isaac learn Growth without a mars Djinni, like how Matthew can in Dark Dawn.
    9: Mia should have Frost and Douse at all times and not require equipping Douse Drop and Frost Jewel.
    10: Ivan needs buffing. He always faints.
    11: Skippable cutscenes. It's annoying when they are before a tough fight you may need to try multiple times on.

      I haven't played the mod, but based on my knowledge of the game, I would say yes. However, there are some caveats:
      1) Maybe this is obvious, but don't pick the version that skips the prologue. It sucks to replay every time but it's important for a first experience.
      2) Either don't sell items that give you psynergy, or remember that the solution to a puzzle could be in a shop if you do.
      3) Not patch-related: if you're the type of person that likes to rename your party in RPGs, that's locked behind a cheat code in this game and the patch doesn't seem to change that. Look up the code if that's your thing, or by default you will only be able to rename the main character (Isaac). Keep in mind, you choose the names at the very beginning, so you have no idea of the characters' personalities, and it's also kind of a spoiler for who will join you.

      Hi Chillinon. First of all, awesome to hear your curious about Golden Sun. It's a great series on its own merits without mods. That said, while this mod was made from the mind set from someone who's replayed the game too many times, I do feel this can enhance a first playthrough as well. Though I'll echo the stipulations alxjones made and then some.
      1.) The prologue does give a ton of narrative context and eases you into gameplay, so it's highly recommended to NOT skip your first playthrough. The code that skips the prologue also skips a tutorial shortly after that I feel is critical to new players. It does mean it'll take a couple hours to get into the real heart of the game. However, I can assure you the gameplay that makes this game different from other RPGs worth it.
      2.) Double stressing alxjones point on Psynergy items. TBH making them sellable is mostly a band-aid on the game's inventory issues that I'd fix directly if I knew how. It's a feature that was more useful for the full ROM hack I made and first implemented these features. Not only was there more items to juggle, but there was also a new class that could give you access to those Psynergy in a pinch.
      3.) I recommend only turning Avoid on for backtracking. As tempting as skipping random encounters is, the game's balance is built around it, so you'll fall under level if you abuse it too much.

      Cool to hear. If it's any help. I made an update the other day that should help with the item management, especially if you plan on playing the second game. It limits what you can sell, but assures you'll have everything you need by end, especially with how it links to the sequel. So it might be worth updating, even if you already downloaded it.

    Fast travel isn't too much needed, but highly appreciated, but it would have to be unlocked late-mid to late game to feel relevant.
    The extra psynergies are kinda pointless in that precise location, since it's a safe zone there. Maybe showcase them in another more relevant place. Maybe adding a faster Psynergy recovery method would work better (in my opinion), like a "meditation-like" method.
    Avoid has been completely useless on every one of my playthroughs.
    The inventory stuff is just plain bad inventory management 😅.
    The Prologue skip is the best QoL I've seen, the prologue feels too long sometimes.

      @@velvetbutterflyhonestly cutscene skipping is hit or miss in JRPGs. Sometimes scenes that involve dialog but are not in a cinematic don't count as a cutscene so you can't skip.
      I watched my brother start up Persona 5 and afterward (since we were sharing a copy) it still took at least 20-30 minutes to get past the intro scenes because you can't just skip them, only fast forward. That's not to mention the tutorials you need to do.
      Dishonorable mention goes to kingdom hearts 2, since not only do you need to make a new game to change Sora's growth and combat focus, you have to go through minigame hell with Roxas before getting to the actual game.

    • @velvetbutterfly

    On the off chance I didn't already miss the window, feel free to let me know what quality of life features you'd like to see in Golden Sun if it were ever remastered. Not sure when or if I'll revisit this project. I got bigger things on the horizon to focus on, including a major V2 upgrade to a Golden Sun ROM hack I'm working on. But as a fan of the Golden Sun series, I love expanding my horizons on what people like and dislike about the games. Mostly because I do have dreams of making my own game some day and the current concept for that OC takes inspirations from RPGS I grew up with like this one. Learning as much about this game from different perspectives helps me expand on those ideas and learn from the series mistakes if that dream game ever does become a thing.

      I think the most obviously annoying part of Golden Sun is how precise the positioning of certain non-battle psynergy moves have to be. The game isn't fixed to a grid, but you'll have to cast things like catch, force, douse, frost, etc repeatedly if you're not perfectly in line with the object you're casting on. Either the positioning being less precise, or providing a crosshair or something would make that a lot less annoying.

      Disregard my previous comment. If you want full assurance of Lost Age compatibility, just assure you're using the latest version (1.0.1H as of writing this comment) and transfer to the Lost Age 20th Anniversary edition, which is also available on Github. The latest version is also mostly compatible with vanilla Lost Age, but doing it this way should assure even the one new item properly makes the transfer. I've also updated the video description to include a direct link to Lost Age 20th Anniversary as well.

    Hi... i played the game many years ago, about 2003-2004 thanks to a friend of mine that had the game. Actually i have been watching to replay GS 1 & play, for first time, GS 2 via roms, but i am not sure how to use the data from the first game to continue in the second one... So, i fear to loose all my progressions in the first game... Do you know if this doesn't suppose a problem?

    • @JackitK
      @JackitK  8 месяцев назад +1

      If you're just asking about transfering data between the games. There's actually a password system built right in the game. This video sums up the process quite well.
      ruclips.net/video/QcmpjnTEdps/видео.htmlsi=U3HbAl0XOVZWH4g1
      You can use the gold password as shown to transfer everything in your possession. But it's worth noting that you only need the Bronze password to do everything in the game. That will transfer everything you need, such as Djinn and Psynergy items, and is much shorter than the novel long gold password. You don't even need to replay the first game if you still have the complete save data or password.
      As in terms of compatability of this mod with the sequel game. The short answer is yes, as long as you use the latest version. (1.0.1H as of writing this) If you're not using a Gold Password or just have all your Psynergy items on hand before beating the game, you don't even have to worry about that.
      I had a little trouble following your question, so hopefully, this answer suffices. Feel free to follow up if you need any clarification.

    As someone who loved this game as a child but never got to play 2. Should I pick this up or Lost Age, if I want to finally put an end to this chapter of my childhood? Should I download a regular ROM?

    • @JackitK
      @JackitK  7 месяцев назад

      This is a tricky question to answer, but I'll do my best. No promises I'll have a straight answer. The hardest part of just picking one is that the narrative of both games are tied so close together, many in the community consider them a single game divided into two. Because of that, I would typically recommend starting with the first game and then going into Lost Age for a full experience. Not only for narrative reasons, but because the sequel rewards you for transferring data from the first game. But if you're only going to get one, then my recommendation gets more complicated.
      It sounds like you're already familiar with the first game, so you might be able to get away with skipping right to Lost Age. There is the whole transfer system, but with the password option you don't have to have to play the first game if you look up a password of a completed Golden Sun file. For example, if you're watching a playthrough of the game and they share the password while transferring to the Lost Age, you could use the same password they do. Plus, if you already have Nintendo Switch online, they do plan to release Golden Sun on their GBA service (someday). So, once they do, you'd be able to replay the first Golden Sun at no additional cost and no additional moral gray ground.
      So yeah, if I had to pick one, I'd probably go with the Lost Age, especially if you're already familiar with Golden Sun. Just be prepared to do a little research if you don't want to miss out on transfer data.
      As for the second part of your question. I have avoid talking about downloading ROMs, as I don't want these projects to encourage piracy. The legality of it all is a big reason why QOL is released as a patch in the first place. If you own the original games, you can dump a copy and use that to legally play these sorts of projects though. I'd look into Epilogue GB Operator for the most straight forward way I know. But if that's not an option (which I get because it's a bit to ask just to play one mod.) there's other ways, I'm less familiar with that you're better off searching the web for more details.

      Do you know of TLA Editor and/or GS Magic? I'm not sure if it's features will answer all of your desire. But majority of the modding I do is with the TLA editor, and GS Magic is supposed to be even more advanced. Main reason I still use the later is for better comptability with the first game. But it sounds like it'd be worth it for you to look up those tools if you haven't already. I include a link the GS Hacking forums in the pin comment, if not video description, and you should be able to find both of them from there.

      Then I got good news for you. A lot of these features have already been implemented in a previous mod I made called Golden Sun 20th Anniversary edition. The biggest difference is instead of Fast Travel Retreat or the Togglable Avoid, you just get Teleport and Retreat early. It's not a perfect alternative, but it works decently well as an alternative. Here's a link to the trailer if you're interested in learning more about it.

    I'm torn about this. For one, I really like the skip prologue, retreat as a teleport or perma protection/avoid additions alongside an option for one tile back growth cast (basically like in GS3/DD). On the other hand... why make psynergy for puzzles cost nothing? I dont think it was EVER a problem for players to worry about psynergy cost in the first place, as the game doesn't have questionable high costs for them to begin with, also cuz it's balanced with the movement that restores them that makes this change questionable if not unnecessary. I'm unsure if the frost and whirlwind cast was to show that Isaac can use those psynergy too, because I dont think that should be an option, like.. why? You have a team and when the team gives you additions like this from the get go with low Psynergy Point cost.. why even hand them over to "non native" adepts like tha?
    And I'm personally against the gamedesign idea to sell key items like those psynergy gained by items to free itemspace. I get it, the limited space for it isn't the most comfortable to work with, but you do know that you could potentiall gamebreak a savefile with it right? With that I mean a situation where you would transfer this savefile to GS2, which like nearly everybody would do cuz it was designed as one game, and I don't think there would be a failsave to give you those key items back when you would go to the finale or when you would transfer the savefile like that.
    Overall, as much as I appreciate the work being done for half the changes.. I don't wanna lose my progress by breaking my savefile because you made key items sellable without brainstorming about potential consequences, imo common consequences for GS fans. Thus I cannot recommend this "QOL" addition to people starting or wishing to replay this game.

    • @JackitK
      @JackitK  8 месяцев назад +2

      Hello. If you don't mind, I'd like to address a couple of your concerns. The frost, whirlwind was just to showcase the free skills and their new name. These skills are still exclusive to Adepts that used them in the original game. The only changes to those skills are...
      - Ivan can use these skills regardless on their class. (Like how the wind adept always had access to Whirlwind in Dark Dawn)
      -Skills like Frost and Douse are available on more classes than the vanilla game.
      Isaac himself doesn't gain any new Psyerngy by default, I just didn't want to show the menu while selecting each one.
      Secondly, I see your concern about transferability between to the second game. I made a quick hot fix and updated the download link with it. Every Psynergy you should need for the second game is locked from selling. The spells from the first game are barely used so I remembered it being for side content and made that feature under the mindset that would rebuy the items before credits, even they were planning to transfer. But this trailer really got out of its intended scope, so I agree that changing that is for the better overall.
      I'll admit, a lot of the changes are carryovers from my previous ROM Hack and may have made more sense in their original context. I was not expecting the QOL label to have as much weight as it did. It was just a little mod I made because a couple people showed interest in Dawn of Djinn but wanted things that it lacked, like the game's dialogue. So, I'll admit some of these changes may have made more sense in that original context. Yet I didn't really see them hurting the game that badly.

      @@JackitK Happy to hear that you are insidefull about this. • @JackitK
      @JackitK  8 месяцев назад

      Fair. I know I wouldn't be opposed to messing with that sort of stuff, if it was more accessible. Right now, it seems like map editing is kind of limiting. Especially when you're working with the first game instead of its sequel. It's why you probably don't see too many mods explore that avenue.

      Short answer: QOL = Quality of Life
      Longer answer I named it that instead of just spelling out Quality of Life because I get that these "improvements" are a bit more subjective and built around my personal tastes. Other comments I've read kind-of prove that suspicion. That said, I struggled to fit "Golden Sun with the features from Dawn of Djinn, but the original game's gameplay" into a catchy title so I settled with QOL. If only so Quality of Life wouldn't be as much in people's faces if they disagreed.

    • @JackitK
      @JackitK  Месяц назад +1

      I can understand if you rather play the game the original way. People take the QOL way too literally, it's just a name. If you feel the game is better without the mod, just don't use it. Heck, if you're looking exclusively for Golden Sun mods that have more challenge, or new elements sprinkled into them, I have an entire Github specifically of those types of projects. However, I feel you're exaggerating things out of frustration and I don't appreciate that negativity; nor putting words into my mouth just because I made one mod that removes or changes them. I never implied anything in the original game was annoying, I just thought some people would appreciate other options and considering how much this blew up, I think those people actually do exist.
      Though, I am confused how you feel this mod "removes all challenge" out of the game, especially when so many of them like prologue skip or fast travel have zero impact on battle. Maybe if you could better explain how the changes make the game look too easy to you, we could come to a better understanding on things. Otherwise, it just comes off as you lashing out at me.
      If you're looking for hard mode stuff with Golden Sun, I'd highly recommend something called "Golden Sun Reloaded". It was made long before this so you get your extra challenge and don't have to deal with the "QOL" features that bother you.
