I remember Fallen Edelgard on release and the months after dedicated to dealing with her and the constant banners with her in them.
I remember when he was introduced, but what made him so broken? I’m genuinely curious. I’ve played the game since it first launched, but I still have no clue really how to strategize or what different skills do and how they work

at this point he was pretty much done with BoL4 so skill issue i guess.
Yeah, he was already dead for PvP with BoL4, no reason to spark for him.
But he's still hella useful in PvE and can sometimes find a utility in AR-O, he's not a totally dead unit. Just not worth sparking for.
Maybe a controversial, but I think the end turn effect with Fomortiis himself was okay. It could only trigger when he was being attacked, if you are able to overpower him and one round him it doesn’t go off, and if it does go off you can arrange your units so the effect is minimal or just have him be attacked last. There’s counter play to it and the only time it goes off is in the players turn, they have control of when it goes off. Duo Lyon and Seithor can end turns in the enemy phase which is the main issue with them and their counter play is minimal before these newer skills.
Turn stopping was really only really anti-fun in SD, and even being honest here, Lyon was already kind of falling off, yes he could still stun lock, and his duo button is broken, but if he couldn’t attack that didn’t matter as much. They really went and buffed the best unit in the game (Ike) and took away everything lyon had.
@@samkeiser9776 Agreed, I really did hate Duo Lyon in SD. But in Aether Raids and Arena for the most part he was no different than any other nuke that 1 taps you. Them outright taking away all the things he was good at is especially lame considering Emblem Ike is now even more of a problem. I will always prefer a nuke that kills everything but can be killed, than a tank that is unkillable.
Fomortiis did not deserve any of this. He was already in a ditch as is. The Seidrs, espeically Duo Seidr were a bit more problematic, but outright nullifying their niche completely I don't really agree with.

Firm Canto Curb might not be useful when Lyon and Seidr are banished.
But now Canto Control is actually easier to find in Hall of Forms. So it is a W to me. 👌
It really is impossiblebto upkeep old units these days umless you actively summon for every new skill as it happens, and even then some units are so behind even with investment you need to have a backup squad of units that released in the last 3 months or sooner. The recent duo mythic battle was a real turning point I feel.
The recent duo mythic battle really seemed to stump people, which is weird, since I found it to be on the easier side, cleared it in a single attempt. My team wasn't even made up terribly recent units (by this game's powercreep standard), and was done almost exclusively by Attuned Caeda supported by Heithor, alongside Altina and Legendary Seliph, but they didn't really do anything.
Tbh because of null follow up it and the best specials for defensive units being spd based and dragonflowers not helping old units who want to tank that way keep in the speed race. So many effects just kill the slower unit's needed doubling skills. And tanky units have such poor inheritable skills to use aside laguz friend. We need a good inheritable aegis + pavise skill for slower units. Especially since they get 1 special proc and that is it. Even dragon roar lacks by often only working on the first hit and then not killing in one hit and then you explode.
I miss when i could just run Laevatein and she hit things hard enough to 1 shot it (with the right skills)

That reminds me of Radiant Dawn, where Nihil is the single most important skill in the endgame, because it negates absurdly strong proc skills that can one shot your units. Eclipse is stupidly designed, not a single unit in the game can survive it, and the only counter to it negates it completely. Black Knight doesn't get to showcase his skill, and you're forced to run a specific skill, so no one is having fun.
I'm not sad I pulled for Duo Lyon even though he got completely countered now because Lyon and Eirika are cute and I like them 🗿

And yeah Flare damage was fine as just being tacked on skills you have to inherent. The moment Legendary Camilla happened we knew it would only get worse and then Duo Lyon was that worse moment because he just had to have the Fomortis end turn gimmick. Breathe of Life 4 really only hurts the Flare and Occultist/Assassin B skills since they just had to go too crazy with Duo Lyon and overcorrect a problem that shouldn't have been greenlit in the first place.
Elemine was only a problem if you cared about ARD, the mode where you just make obnoxious unit formations and watch as the AI has all the fun.
they're selling me Duo Elise and Harmonic Neph as the problem for well over an year now. Where's Sakura's lead duo or fancy standalone 5* unit with a PRF? I'll buy that solution for sure.

I think another big problem is that there really aren’t that many viable skills or builds,
I mean essentially every infantry wants the same 3 skills, LF4 a good DC skill, and BoL4 and if they change it up it’s probably just because they have to for some reason (incompatibility with LF4 or something) or because their kit relies on a different C slot for some reason (TP 4 or something)
There’s really no such thing as budget builds anymore, you can’t get DR% piercing from anything that isn’t a premium unit or a premium inheritable.
There’s basically just tons of units competing to be the best in a handful or archetypes, and maybe they have different matchups, or an ability or 2 that makes them stand out, but even then, they probably want similar skills. Basically every offensive flier wants flared sparrow.
Every armor wants a save skill except the Edelgards, not to mention skills that are just different flavors of the same thing. And nothing stops us from still getting new units that can’t do anything special, making a unit with a bad kit good is pointless and costs tons of premium resources. And there’s close to no room for experimentation.
So much of this could be avoided if the effects and skills in the game weren’t so substantial and actual stats mattered more.
And really the game would be better from a competitive gameplay perspective if they stopped releasing new characters.

Emblem Celica takes away warp blocking as an effect. I should be able to block her warping with the likes of Gatekeeper, but it doesn't work.
Firm CC seems crazy to me as if you really think about it, it exists to counter only four units. Two Seidrs, two Lyons*. Funny like Cancel Affinity in how niche it sounds on paper, yet this time it's way more relevant.
On a related tangent, it really stings for fans of characters that Lyon and Seidr can get their gimmicks hard-countered so quickly when they never should've been gimmicked up in the first place. Like I'm one of the biggest Lyon fans out there yet have always hated turn-ends as a concept and it doesn't feel good having my favorite character's unit prospects be wasted toxically for the terrible balancing decisions of Intsys. Could've just been inoffensively good units instead...
On that last note. It would do good to a certain extent. That is because if you add many ways to work on units it's almost impossible for units to dissable/counter every.
This means you could have a unit to out of 4 to counter any unit.
If we had only bread and butter build for units, then if they release an enemy that counters that we're doomed.
I took a about a year and a half hiatus cuz the powercreep. I played a lot of older FE games to remember how I fell in love with the franchise and came back to FEH like 3 days ago. The biggest thing is reading page long descriptions trying to figure out what each unit does. I really love the idea of skills and all that but whatever happened to "KISS: Keep It Simple, Stupid"?
Edit: and I left because of powercreep in the "pvp" modes. I figured I could at least come back and enjoy the pve modes but it is clear that powercreep has run rampant when 1 skill has 2-3 effects, weapons like 10, and specials are now upgradeable? big oof.
I feel like Fallen Edelgard was the first really bad example of this because the units they released to counter her basically ruined armor units in general for a long while.
Nowdays it feels like a unit isn't viable unless it's drowning in sources of true damage/mitigation. Tanks like H!Byleth that nerf the heck out of enemy offensive stats aren't reliable anymore when you have units gaining 25+ true damage from sources unrelated to their stats.
After quitting feh about 4 months ago, it really puts it into perspective just looking at how rapid the meta falls apart with each new banner. I don't know how I did it for so long.
so fun fact, bride sharena with emblem celica on her special has made it to where I can beat any abyssal with ease as long as I'm getting every turn out of her, which is easy when teamed up with risen king chrom.
Bro I'm slaying abyssals with green axe Altina and Spring Triandria. Her dance buffs/nerfs let's my Altina basically one shot everyone.
I’d argue that Celica’s emblem effect is the most annoying and game breaking since having a near map crossing warp is huge vs special cooldown or some extra ranged dmg reduction. But that’s really just because it seems to accelerate the extra turn meta we’ve been getting loads of between Seior alts and Christmas Edel

I’d have been more fine with if canto curb wasn’t just an upgrade to canto control, it’s not niche, it’s just canto control but it screws over lyon.
I was summoning for my first copy of Lyon on Herofest, however once Lucia came out I gave up and went for Edelgard Merges. Thanks IS :)

I mean, we all knew that it was gonna happen, that Lyons reign of terror would not last indefinetly. I am honestly suprised that it lasted as long as it did, that it took IS almost half a year before giving the players the tools to counter Lyons brand of bullshit.

At this rate as much as I hate to say it. FEH is still toxic and I really am debating playing another year for many reasons (mostly FEH Pass literally half the stuff should be free QOL updates) (and of course the meta shifting every month have ever seen a game like this it's ridiculous and is getting cash grabby at this point it's sad since I've been playing since day one
