I remember going into our local record store in 1981 (I was 15) and the owner motioned me over to the counter as he knew I was into heavier music. He had a box of albums he was just putting out for sale and he showed me Welcome To Hell and said it had just come in. He didn't know anything about them but from the cover and song titles, he figured they would be up my alley. I took a chance and bought it and brought it home. From the first moment the needle touched the record, I knew it was something special that would change the heavy music world...and it did. My Ranking. 1. Welcome to Hell (I’ve listened to this album thousands of times) 2. Black Metal 3. At War with Satan 4. Prime Evil 5. Possessed I don’t know how to rank the rest.
my dad put on Black Metal when I was 5 yrs old, opened all the windows in the house, and pissed off every neighbor around, he played it so loud the needle on the record player would skip, the second the intro to Black Metal came on, I thought that was the coolest thing i'd ever heard in my young life, cooler then Eruption, since that day I love Venom, and I know my dad is with my father in hell rocking to Black Metal
Venom.....one of my all time fav bands. I still follow them today and still listen to all of their albums avidly. Prime Evil is my all time fav, followed by Possessed, however even the recent Storm the Gates is high on my list. I also do like Mantas's versión of Venom (Venom Inc)......thus I follow both versions without any hesitation.
Fair ranking (as you usually do!) and agree Prime Evil hasn't been heard by enough people who class themselves as metal fans. I'd rate Fallen Angels a little higher but other than that... spot on! People forget just how shocking Venom were when they 1st came out. In the UK we had the Friday Rock Show broadcast at 10pm and the host Tommy Vance bet his fellow DJ the host of the VERY popular Mon to Fri breakfast show £100 ( a LOT back then) that he wouldn't play Venom's 'Warhead' 7" single in full on his show. Of course the money got pledged to charity and said track was indeed played, at about 8am , to approximately 20 million pop loving unsuspecting listeners many of whom had never even heard heavy metal let alone Venom before! Some people wrote in to the BBC, their local newspaper or music magazine asking if Venom were actually real!! Many could not believe a 'noise' like that would be recorded and released as official music! Well funny! Of course us kids... we 'got it'. Oh yes we got it straight away. Extreme Metal was born!!!
yeah I've seen some people talk about Fallen Angel, I must admit that i haven't listened to it more than a handful of times, maybe I've missed something. :) Cheers! 🤘
Haven't gone too deep into Venom's discography, but those first 3 albums are killer. At War With Satan is one hell of an epic track. I'll have to do a proper dive into their music, great video man.
It was Venom and Sodom that got me into the BM and DM genre. I honestly can´t deside which Venom album I would put as my number one. But it is Welcome To Hell or Black Metal and both albums means alot to me. But when it comes to Sodom I can definetly say that my number one Sodom album is In The Sign Of Evil. I love that album.
@@sassaniandynasty3796 I did interviews with bands back in the early 2000s and some around 2015, only written interviews. I might do something with them perhaps just add some background music while the text is up on screen if there is an interest for it, I have like 100 interviews on my harddrive with lots of thrash and speed metal bands.
As someone who got into Venom pretty recently, I’d definitely have to say Black Metal is one of the finest albums I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to. Welcome To Hell is good, but I’d say it’s like Kill ‘Em All versus Ride The Lightning. KEA is good, but RTL is simply better in almost every way. I feel the same way with Venom’s Black Metal and WTH. I also have to say 80s Mantas with the stache and all black guitar is such a badass look for a musician. Venom are one of my favorites, personally. In the era of shiny and bright synth pop music, they were far, far away on the other side of the musical spectrum. Great video by the way!
I'm happy you gave credit to Venom for 3 genres. (Black, Thrash & Extreme Metal) they deserve that recognition. Now if only people would admit that Motorhead is also influential to Thrash Metal....AND....also the first "Crossover" band. They loved Punk & Punks loved them.
Again ranking makes pretty much sense to me...although I always have trouble choosing their number 1 between the debut and sophomore. *And R.I.P. Hank Von Helvete.*
I’m kinda ashamed to say this, but I am more familiar with the bands that Venom influenced than I am them. The only albums I’ve heard are the first four, and I’d rank them in the same order as you, Black Metal was a game changer that still holds up today. 🤘🏻
The first Black Metal band. And to all you youngsters who say they're not Black Metal, they made up the term so sit down kids. Back in the 80s when I was a teen, Black Metal bands were extreme metal bands that sung lyrics embracing satanism and satan. So among the fans and bands, a Black Metal band was Venom, Possessed, Slayer, Celtic Frost, Bathory, Onslaught; etc. Even the more conventional sounding heavy metal band Mercyful Fate was called Black Metal. There was a reason why Mercyful Fate was on shows opening for Venom, Slayer, Destruction; etc. instead of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest; etc., despite them not being a "thrash" band. It had to do with the lyrics and imagery. I remember an old interview during Slayer a little after Hell Awaits came out. Slayer ended up being placed on a bill in Europe with standard heavy metal bands, and his comment was: "We had a lot of people buzzing when we played, being that we're a black metal band". And friends of mine and other fans would always address bands like Sodom, Destruction, Venom, Possessed, etc. as "Black Metal". As well as many underground magazines in the mid 80s: Kick Ass. So kids need to STFU when they try to say otherwise because they were NOT there during the 1st wave of Black Metal.
Huge Venom fan here...been listening to Venom since the 80's and they still remain one of my fav bands today. I love all albums by Venom and my favourite 3 albums are : 1) Possessed 2 ) From the very deprhs 3) Prime Evil
Lay down your soul to the gods rock n' roll!!! Love it! I have Black Metal and Welcome To Hell on vinyl and it still sounds great! I can't even count how many time i tried to get a proper recording of the intro to In League backwards....until i turned the spindle motor around on my turntable and got it to play proper speed! LOL! Im gonna burn your souls......crush your bones......Im gonna make you bleed....you're gonna bleed for me! LOVE IT!!!
I heared the album Welcome to Hell in te early eighties maybe a year before I heared the album Black Metal. To me Welcome to Hell was more evil. Black Metal included more rock`n`roll and humour. But that´s just one perspective. I have a great respect for your opinion and I admire your videos.
Happy someone finally ranked Venom. I mean they're only one of the most important bands in Metal. I do agree that not all of their albums are great but I like all their records. And, in my opinion, the Tony Dolan era records are underrated. Great list!
1. Welcome to Hell 2. Black Metal 3. Prime Evil 4. At War with Satan 5. Possessed 6. Temples of Ice 7. The Waste Lands 8. Calm Before the Storm 9. Resurrection 10. Cast in Stone 11. Storm the Gates 12. Fallen Angels 13. From the Very Depths 14. Metal Black 15. Hell
I don't care what anyone says, Prime Evil is a fucking great album, after all these years it's still one of my top 3 Venom albums. People often hate the Tony "Demolition Man" Dolan era, but to me it's like 80's Black Sabbath without Ozzy, it's misunderstood, ignored by many haters and it gets a lot of undeserved criticism.
Yeah, the real fans love the Demolition man era too. It's mostly people that just listened to the first 2-3 albums that complain because they haven't investigated any of the other records.
Tony is a great bass player and singer he is also amazing in venom Inc which imo is better than anything venom has released on the last 10years imo. I'm still waiting for when venom Inc will be doing a second album
As with Black Sabbath's Headless Cross (with that other Tony), anyone who doesn't rank Prime Evil high in the discography is simply wrong. Taste doesn't factor in - it's objective greatness.
Great video! Your ranking is spot on man! Prime Evil (1989) is a fun record. I’m listening to the CD right now! It’s crazy to think I was only 2 years Old when that album came out.
Thank you!! Venom ranking. ! 1 welcome to hell the masterpiece every metal band from early Metallica through Slayer was influenced by this dark sinister debut . 2 Black metal . no words needed only one . Masterpiece 3 at war with Satan. cronos sounded so evil 😈 4 Possesed 5 calm before the storm it was an OK album 6 cast in stone 7 Resurrection 8 Prime evil 9 fallen angels 10 the waste lands . the rest on my list are the less average good albums . Venom rules
Venom started it all!! But for me I lost interest when the original line up was broken. It changed instantly. The "Assault" EP's were such a cool idea to. I love the first 4 albums and even though Possessed is probably my least out of the 4, Hellchild, Mystique and the title track are great in my opinion but I think Black Metal is also my favorite album 💀
Som vanligt klockrent starkt jobbat och som du säkert vet så är egentligen bara top 3 viktiga för mig. Keep on dishin’ out the goods of the evil Metal gods
I'm not a fan of ranking albums in general and regarding Venom I really like all of their albums. I completely agree though that the first three albums are the best, together with the singles from that era. All the other albums I would put on 4th place, because I really like them more or less equally. There was a time when I only wanted to hear the more recent albums and at other times I get nostalgic for the Tony Dolan era.
What about a speed metal band called VECTOM from Germany. I would like to know about them, Have you heard of them? I have two albums by them. ( they were hard to locate ) speed revolution from 1985 and Rules of mystery from 1986 probably not much to say about them. I do think they were overlooked. I believe they have a third album, but seriously hard to find. I really like them even if they do border on bad, haha. this was a great episode for me. Venom albums I had no idea were out there. so thank you dude.
Black Metal was the album that introduced me to the band in 1985 when was a 15 year old and moving into more extreme metal and away a bit from Maiden. It's still my go to album for Venom. Classic.
Where to start? I would agree with your ranking of the eras only. I love the 1st 4 albums. I would have to go with Welcome to Hell at #1. To me it is flawless. The production properly captures the essence and the primitive nature of it. Venom was years ahead of its time and despite an uneven overall discography must be regarded as important to heavy music as Sabbath were a decade earlier. No extreme metal of any kind would exist without Venom's 1st 2 albums. And don't forget, they had a 3 song EP from 1980! The true pioneers place in metal history is secure with those of us who truly bleed heavy metal. I could go on for hours writing about them. And the fact they were a 3 piece just adds to their mystique. I love Metal Black by the way. And Resurrection. RIPRIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I pretty much like your ranking. I would switch number one and two and probably rank from the very depths a little higher. I like prime evil high on your list, in general I like your ranking videos.
Welcome to hell, Black metal and At war with satan are legendary masterpieces. At war with satan had some weaker songs and track, but the title track makes the whole album by itself a 20 min war song. Black metal is like master of puppets, its one of ''those'' albums, by that I mean pretty much unbeatable and legendary and people still speak of them til this very days. Though welcome to hell was recorded in a weird way in a studio that usualy do non metal/rock albums the recording quality gives it its identity, and the album is full of awesome song, actually every song in both welcome to hell and black metal is amazing. And as a plus if you get a new copy of welcome to hell, black metal and at war with satan you also get all the demos and singles with the cd. Like Nightmare, warhead, manitau, seven gates of hell and even radio studio recording of some songs. So much value in a single disc. Thats a nice list, though I would personally put Resurrection and Calm before the storm higher. Calm before the storm has like a almost glam feeling to some of the song, but in a darker way. Black Xmas is a great opening song and shows that chronos can do some vibrato singing, metal punks has like solos all over the songs and it ending solo is so cool. Under a spell is cheesy with two vocalist singing along, though I still love it. The title track calm before the storm has an awesome solo. The song fire has like sections were the drums are like almost blast beating and it sounds like grindcore. Resurrection has some awesome songs and solos, resurrection, war against christ, all there is fear, pandemonium, fireflight, control freak and leviathan are such great songs.
I remember I bought Black metal vinyl back in the day. Just because the album cover. Listened to it nonstop! Deserves #1👍 Have you ever ranked Metal Massacre comps? Those were a pretty big deal!
I remember buying Welcome to Hell when it first came out and as a 11 year old kid that album scared the crap out of me,nothing was as extreme as that back then.
I’m going to wade in to defend From The Very Depths - discovered it a year ago and absolutely love it - I’ll have a cup of whatever tea they were drinking then! Totally agree about Storm The Gates etc, flatter than a black metal pancake

1. Welcome to Hell (I’ve listened to this album thousands of times)
2. Black Metal
3. At War with Satan
4. Prime Evil
5. Possessed
I don’t know how to rank the rest.
Cheers!
Nice!! Been waiting for this one
Remember being 12 and listening to "Black Metal" feeling like I found the real shit! Always gonna have a soft spot for this band.
cheers
I love the rank em all series. My all time favorite is ANNIHILATOR and It would be cool if you gave them a rank em all
Don't know if you would like that, I would go hard on them. ;) but I probably will some day.
@@RuthlessMetalYT it's ok. I know you stick with the metal roots but I like your show and I would love to see it. Thx!
my dad put on Black Metal when I was 5 yrs old, opened all the windows in the house, and pissed off every neighbor around, he played it so loud the needle on the record player would skip, the second the intro to Black Metal came on, I thought that was the coolest thing i'd ever heard in my young life, cooler then Eruption, since that day I love Venom, and I know my dad is with my father in hell rocking to Black Metal
hehe, damn. :) cool dad. Cheers! ❄️
Interesting stuff. I thought Resurrection had really great sound, I put it in 3rd after 1st 2. It proved they could play, to their critics worst fears
Cheers!
yes!!
I like the new albums, and have been a fan since '82. Just imagine if Storm the Gates was their 1st album in '81.
Cheers! 🤘
Welcome to hell is my favorite album.😄👍🤘🤘
:) Cheers! 🤘
Venom was one of the first bands I saw live... 1985... what a show :D
Oh, must have been amazing to see them back then. Cheers!

Haven't gone too deep into Venom's discography, but those first 3 albums are killer. At War With Satan is one hell of an epic track. I'll have to do a proper dive into their music, great video man.

I absolutely LOVE VENOM!
don't we all. :)
Hell fockin yeeah! Love Venom.
In the sign of evil is majestic.
A few dudes from Venom Inc watched your video!! 🤘🤘🤘
Cool, Ive interviewed then twice actually.
@@RuthlessMetalYT have you recorded it? If yes why don't you post it??!!
You should rank all the Baron Rojo albums next. :)
I haven't listened much to them. Cheers!
If you don't know the first three Venom albums, do you even know extreme metal? Those three and Prime Evil are essential, in my opinion.
Correct
I don't even know any of their albums not even one but I'm into the heaviest subgenres of Death Metal lol
Black leather hounds, faster than sound
Black out the amps, now it's night
Great video, man!
Thanks boss
Great video by the way!
yeah black metal is a bit more metal than welcome to hell, don't sleep on the following records, they are brilliant too. thank you!
I'm happy you gave credit to Venom for 3 genres. (Black, Thrash & Extreme Metal)
they deserve that recognition. Now if only people would admit that Motorhead is also influential to Thrash Metal....AND....also the first "Crossover" band. They loved Punk & Punks loved them.
black, thrash and death metal. ;) extreme metal includes black and thrash and a few other genres. ;) Cheers! 🤘
I believe Motorhead started the D-beat. Just listen to those old Phil Taylor drums, Iron Fist, Ace of Spades, and more, that's the D-beat.
Again ranking makes pretty much sense to me...although I always have trouble choosing their number 1 between the debut and sophomore. *And R.I.P. Hank Von Helvete.*
RIP Hank.
I love Resurrection. One of their best 5 albums.
Cheers!
I’m kinda ashamed to say this, but I am more familiar with the bands that Venom influenced than I am them. The only albums I’ve heard are the first four, and I’d rank them in the same order as you, Black Metal was a game changer that still holds up today. 🤘🏻
Check out the dony dolan years.
Yup, I was the 666th "Like" for this post, and my favorite band !
Scary, Cheers!;)
I have seen Venom 2-3 times live, and will see them again next year.
Awesome!
Yeah, the early stuff I can get into the second wave is harder for me even if there are a few cool bands and albums from that era too. Cheers! 🤘
Cool ranking! I only know the two first records, but they’re amaaazing!
What about doing a ranking of Danish thrashers Artillery?
yeah, that might happen some day. we'll see. :) Cheers!
Great video! Can you please do Destruction?

Lay down your soul to the gods rock n' roll!!! Love it! I have Black Metal and Welcome To Hell on vinyl and it still sounds great! I heared the album Welcome to Hell in te early eighties maybe a year before I heared the album Black Metal. To me Welcome to Hell was more evil. Black Metal included more rock`n`roll and humour. But that´s just one perspective. I have a great respect for your opinion and I admire your videos.
thanks boss Cheers!
Happy someone finally ranked Venom. I mean they're only one of the most important bands in Metal. I do agree that not all of their albums are great but I like all their records. And, in my opinion, the Tony Dolan era records are underrated. Great list!

if you could rank all the non album singles as an album it could easily be number 1. great video!
thanks, cheers!

1 welcome to hell the masterpiece every metal band from early Metallica through Slayer was influenced by this dark sinister debut .
2 Black metal . no words needed only one . Masterpiece
3 at war with Satan. cronos sounded so evil 😈

8 Prime evil
9 fallen angels
10 the waste lands . the rest on my list are the less average good albums . Venom rules

Venom started it all!! But for me I lost interest when the original line up was broken. It changed instantly. The "Assault" EP's were such a cool idea to.
I love the first 4 albums and even though Possessed is probably my least out of the 4, Hellchild, Mystique and the title track are great in my opinion but I think Black Metal is also my favorite album 💀
yeah, the lineup changes hasn't been positive for Venom. Cheers! 🤘
Welcome to Hell and Black Metal albuns. Oooohhhh man! I just whant to thank Venom band to really show me the way to real Heavy Metal rules.

Yeah its just a ranking I can enjoy some of the mid ranked albums at times too. Cheers!
Yes kinda a German version of Venom. They had the right style but their music was perhaps not as strong as some other similar bands.
@@RuthlessMetalYT Agreed. Thank you for your reply . After digging deeper today I believe the total catalogue is two albums.

I think that fallen angels and from the very depths are realy good albums they bring my in the Taste of venoms Musik
from the very depths had some cool ideas and songs but yeah, it's not an album that I ever grab when I'm in the mood for the band. Cheers!
Black Metal was the album that introduced me to the band in 1985 when was a 15 year old and moving into more extreme metal and away a bit from Maiden. It's still my go to album for Venom. Classic.
good times, Cheers!
Cheers! 🤘
I pretty much like your ranking. I would switch number one and two and probably rank from the very depths a little higher. I like prime evil high on your list, in general I like your ranking videos.
Thanks boss!
Lots of good tracks throughout my favourite track is At War With Satan with intro. It is like a film. 20+/- minutes. Love the monologue.
Cheers!
Welcome to Hell and Black Metal are classics, definitely my favorites!
Cheers!
Resurrection has some awesome songs and solos, resurrection, war against christ, all there is fear, pandemonium, fireflight, control freak and leviathan are such great songs.
yes, resurrection is pretty solid, it's just more modern sounding than those earlier records and I prefer that sound.
Perfect ranking ❤

I remember buying Welcome to Hell when it first came out and as a 11 year old kid that album scared the crap out of me,nothing was as extreme as that back then.
yeah there were nothing extreme back then. perhaps the first black sabbath but that's about it. :D
