Hello how your doing ? Your video are very helpful but please Can you help me i can't connect with midi my arturia to my craft synth modal i dont understand why i'ts does'nt works.
Hey, I'll do my best👍🏻. First question: does the Arturia have a 5-pin midi port(like a MicroBrute) or does it have a 3.5mm aux-type midi port(like a MicroFreak)? If it's a 5-pin and you are using a "classic" midi cable then the first thing is to make sure both synths are on the same midi channel. If it's aux-type then you'll be using a midi "break out" connector (3.5 mm on one side, 5-pin on the other). But not all of these connectors are the same, so if possible make sure to use the one that came with the gear (Arturia connectors are typically gray&white). Let me know how it goes👍🏻!

Lon Demon Well, I’m not quite sure, but I will investigate tomorrow - meanwhile, there _is_ a little checkbox in the ModalApp midi setup, “midi forward” which I assume has to be on?
It turns out that I had to select MIDI channel 15 in the modalapp settings, that seemed to do the trick! Now the Akai MPK mini is triggering the CS2, worth a try for anyone else facing this issue. Thanks for your quick reply Undulations 👍🏻
Lon Demon Wow, coincidence! I just got it to work too😀! I basically just hooked it all up with powered usb hub and camera adapter, and it worked (both keys and knobs - which is probably just some luck with CC values). Channel 15? It could be what your keyboard was set for via the Akai Editor software? Anyway, I’m glad you got it working - and thanks for posing the question because normally I would use Keystep, which is easy midi cable, but it has no knobs or pads. I would have used a midi host for Akai, but I really like doing it with the Modal app👍🏻!
Lon Demon oh, lol, the CC values are still just set up from this video. I was pretty sure I hadn’t set this up with the iPad before, but I forgot I had basically done the same thing with my laptop🤔.
This video is great ! thank you ! i bought the Craft and IPad just some days ago and i have some problems trying to connect the app to the Synth .. i hope that you can help me :) I am using the original USB 3 camara adapter and the iPad is charging good with the lightning cable , but always when i connect the Craft appears the message: Cant use Accesory ! Craft Sinth requires too much power and of course the app dont connect with the Craft. I dont know if i have to buy a USB hub with external power or just a normal in like your video? my Ipad is a 7 generation 13.6. Thanks again.
Thanks for checking out the video🙏🏼 I'm hopeful that a little, inexpensive unpowered hub (probably 1-to-4) would fix the issue. I'm sure that iPad has a ton more juice than my old 2nd gen mini (but I guess it needs more power too). I don't think it's really a power issue, more about tricking iOS with the hub. PS sorry, but it's been ages since I hooked them up, is anything gained by having batteries in the CS2.0 and then setting the power switch to battery mode, then hooking up the iPad by USB? i.e. hopefully pushing the usb to be data-only, not for power, and then maybe the iPad won't complain? might be worth a shot🤔
@@undulations Hey ! thank you so much or your quick answer ! :) well i been trying with differents modes like you say using the batteries in the CS2.0 and differents usb cables and is not working but yesterday i discovered something :) I dont have the original power suply of this new Ipad , i use another old from another Ipad and charge good but and i the see in the specs that the new one have more power 12 V and the old is just 5V, maybe is that ! but i have to buy one and check it ! i
thanks for video)But how can i connect craft synth 2.0 with ableton like external instrument with using usb ?Do i need to connect it by using midi cabel and powered by usb cabel or i may use ubs cabel and additional power of 3 AA battery?
Sorry it took me a while to reply. You can connect the Craft Synth 2.0 to Ableton with just a USB cable (no batteries required). Also, this MIDI connection via USB goes both ways: you can use Live to control the Craft Synth and you can use the Craft synth to control things in Live (note data _and_ knob/CC data get sent). It can take a little fiddling to get it to work: turn on "track" for the Craft Synth in the MIDI Settings (I think that is in Preferences), and then change your track MIDI in and out settings to match what you want. I hope this helps!
I have all of these peices and I can't for the life of me get my USB midi keyboard powered by your exact same hub, to play sounds from the Skulpt. It's driving me insane.
@@beppo05 Well, it can really be an ordeal, tbh. Always a chance there is some weird incompatibility, but the main thing that trips me up is the midi channel. Try to confirm each is on the channel you expect. It's been a while: this is through the Modal App, right? Or are you using a midi host box?
@@undulations it's through the host box. I have two different midi keyboards I've tried. I didn't know midi channels were a thing, I'm new to this. I'll look into that.
I love your content and I On this little guy but I am having a problem with USB ground looping. Or maybe it’s the TRS 3.5 mill to 1/4 inch connectors. I would love to see a video where are you sort this out. All I want is to be able to power via USB to connect to my laptop and not have noise as its connected to my mixer
Right now if I plug the USB cable straight to the wall and the audio line out to my mixer it is noise free, but as soon as I plug into my USB hub to connect to my laptop buzz nation. Thank you
@@hectorpina682 Understood. I was going to suggest testing it with batteries to see if it's the USB or the audio, but it sounds like you're already past that👍🏻. Can you test it going directly into your laptop, no hub? Is the hub powered by a wall adaptor? If so, you might try an unpowered hub (if AC noise is the issue). On the other hand, if you're using an unpowered hub it might have to do with not getting enough power to the synth? Also, it could be related to something _else_ that's plugged into the hub, like a mouse ("polling" might cause power fluctuations, idk)? So unplugging the other stuff would be a good test too. Once you figure out the issue hopefully there will be some sort of easy solution. Let me know. Thanks a lot for checking out the channel🙏🏼!
@@undulations I am about 90% closer to finding the solution… My USB hub was plugged in to my 4K port replicator for my external monitors. I unplugged my USB hub and plugged it directly to my laptop… The noise was greatly reduced. Now most of the noise itself comes from my mixer, I think it’s the built-in effects , which I don’t need.
Hello sir, im about to acquire a craftsynth that ill receive in the following weeks, i have an mpk mini like the one you have in the video and im planning to use it in my daw, how can i connect them? i seee in the video your using the line out port but what i want to achieve is just to connect the craftsynth via usb to my computer and my akai mpk as well and with this one play the sounds of the craftsynth, can i do that?
I think i will connect the craft either to my androidtablet OR my laptop, but NO external keyboard, i just want so se the parameter settings more "live" on a display, but still control the synth from itself - thanks for all this! - my craft should arrive someday next week, - fun thing to tinker with during lockdown, in my case volontary because of heart and lung problems, take care, stay safe! - greetings from granpa Levi in sweden
You stay safe too! We are on stay-at-home order here. I completely agree about no keyboard. It is quite a nice little keyboard, even if one has large hands. It is also a very effective multi-touch keyboard, which makes setting up arpeggios (even across multiple octaves) quite smooth. Thanks for watching!
Hi! Can you help me? There is no sound coming through Modal app. I can see the knobs reacting on the Modal app, but the keyboard doest react at all, there no sound when I use Modal app. Craft Synth works fine on other software and the keyboard reacts and there is sound. For some reason nothing happens on the Modalapp with the keys
Hello. Could tell me please if I would to connect with my craft directly to my Android phone directly without any Pc source , how could I do this? Thank you
Hey, I have only done that with iOS, but I think you would probably use whatever the Android equivalent of a "camera connection adaptor" is. It needs whatever goes into your phone on one side (usb-c male? usb-micro male?) and then on the other side it needs a USB-B female (just looks like a usb port on a laptop). Let me know if this helps. Thanks for checking out the video (sorry it took me a while to reply)!
Hi I'm struggling to program the moving waveforms that the unit has I wonder if you have any tips as to how to access these easier please. Any help would be thoroughly appreciated as usual I mappef out my synth just like you. 😁
Heath Wiseman Hey, I want to help but I think I need more details about what you are trying to do. Is this all on the synth itself or are you using a DAW with MIDI? Are you trying to control the waves with the LFO? Let me know👍🏻.
Enjoying your videos. One stupid question: Can I use the craft without an audio interface? Did I get it right that you plugged it in your laptop by USB and that's it?
Ethan Fisk Hey, thanks for the feedback! It can be confusing (I double-checked the manual to make sure I’m telling you right). The Craft Synth 2.0 does NOT have a built-in audio interface. The USB allows you to use the Modal App - it gives midi connectivity, gives a nice interface to the CS2, and (probably most important of all) lets you save and manage your presets on a pc or other device. But no audio through the USB. So, if you want to get audio into a DAW or such, in realtime, you will need an audio interface of some sort. For these videos I’ve recorded the synth audio into a field recorder, transferred the wav file, and then synced it to the video. Thanks for watching👍🏻!
People are saying you can use a power bank to run this do you think you could use a cell phone charger I've seen this done on other synth before do you have an opinion on this please. Is your still running on batteries or is it cutting out like some people have mentioned. Thanks again Heath
Heath Wiseman Well, I’ve run it some on AA’s but typically run it from a usb socket on my ac power block (i.e. wall power). I can’t recall it ever dropping out in any case? I also powered it from my iPad Mini for quite a bit, same for laptop. Anyway, I’m running a test right now using a power bank. The bank is kind of chunky, I guess the volume of 2 decks of cards; it was not fully charged, maybe 1/2 or 2/3. I’m just running a sequence (speaker volume low) and I’ll see how long it can go, report back below.
Heath Wiseman Okay, the sequence is still running after more than 5 hours on the power bank, and the bank power level indicator hasn’t gone down at all. No AA batteries installed during test, btw. Seems very stable with minimal power consumption.
Palindrome AU Thanks for watching. Yes, the sequence data is global (and volatile). I guess it’s best to see it as what the manual calls a “programmable sequenced arpeggiator” that can be used across presets. The sequence root note is triggered by a single key, and the sequence itself is lost when the unit is turned off. Testing indicates a max sequence length of 32.
I'm running the synth without the app at the moment, how do I connect the SQ-1 ? I run the midi from the SQ-1 direct into the midi in, then I don't know how to set the synth for external clock ? Please help
Well, for starters, do your SQ-1 sequences play on the Craft Synth? If so, are you trying to sync the arpeggio rate to the SQ-1 speed/tempo? I can't recall the clock setting but can definitely look into that. Sync signals may be another way to try to achieve what you want. Let me know👍🏻!
@@ivon1688 Ahh, got it. In that case, the most likely issues are: cable, duty cycle, or midi channel. Make sure the midi "breakout cable" you're using is correct, should be the one that came with the SQ-1 (or one like it): black, TRS (3 conductor) 3.5mm plug on one side, and female 5-pin midi on the other side. Then a working standard midi cable with male 5-pin connectors on both sides (try a different cable if nothing else works). Make sure everything is plugged together all the way: midi jack on the SQ-1 (not LittleBits, CV, Gate, or Sync). midi IN jack on the CS2. Then, with both units on, press play on SQ-1 and make sure DUTY on the SQ-1 is up around the middle. Lastly, and most likely: make sure the Craft Synth 2.0 and the SQ-1 are on the same MIDI Channel. The manuals will have how to set and check, but fyi to set the sq-1 midi channel do the following: start with sq1 off, hold play button and turn on - this is Global Parameter Settings mode - then the sequencer step that's lit tells you the current midi channel (so eg if step 3 is lit then is on channel 3), press a step button to change to that channel, then turn back off to save new channel. Most likely Craft Synth is on channel 1, but idk. Turn sq1 back on and test if it works. If not, try all the other channels. Last resort, check CS2 manual to see if somehow midi is disabled by a setting. Best of luck with it! This sort of thing can be frustrating, but hopefully something here helps!
Hi Edward, thanks so much for doing this series. I hope you don't mind my asking, but how can I get my CraftSynth 2.0 to sync with my Pocket Operator? I tried using the ring/tip 3.5mm adaptor cable, but I can't get them to sync properly. Oh, and I'm very new to MIDI and synths. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I'm a bit confused about the dual mono output and which cable should I use to connect it to mono balanced input on my audio interface. Would it work If I use stereo 3.5 mm cable with 1/4 mono adaptor?
Well, gotta be careful on that. The mono balanced expects signal and -signal on the two channels, so sending dual mono in by a stereo plug or a mono plug can give unexpected results (no output, weak output). Ideally you send to a stereo unbalanced input (and a mono unbalanced input works too, same voltage on the T and R conductors of the TRS plug in this case). If you ONLY have balanced mono then it can still work, I think, but you need the right cable - basically a stereo cable with one of the channels cut (either literally or using Y-cables). I hope I'm telling you right on this. It can a lead to crazy stuff - I recently had a recording that was silent on my phone (mono) speaker but seemed okay everywhere else - turned out to be a signal phase problem caused by not plugging a plug into a jack 100%. And then Arturia MicroFreak has a 1/4" balanced mono out that has created the opposite sort of problem for people just running that into a stereo line-in on a field recorder (very low volume). Hope this helps, let me know if I need to clarify (or got something wrong).
@@undulations Tested with a stereo cable and mono 1/4 jack plug and the volume was cut by half. Then I tried with the stereo RCA cable and mono 1/4 plug and that fixed the volume problem but now I'm getting a high-pitch sound/noise (grounding?). I'll buy the Y cable and hope it'll work. Thanks.
idk, unfortunately half might be the best you can do in this case (at least in terms of voltage). As i understand it, the balanced scheme takes [signal+noise] and subtracts [-signal+noise], giving no noise and 2*signal. So if you use just 1 part of that you get just signal, so half. The Y-cables will do the same thing (because you half to leave one branch of the Y unconnected for it to work). Hope this is making sense. Thanks again for watching.
@@undulations Just got a superfast reply from Modal. "The CRAFTsynth 2.0 has dual mono output on a 3.5mm jack, so you if you are using a balanced input its best to use a mono (TS) 3.5mm mono to 1/4 " TS cable." Simple as that. :)
Okay, interesting. I'm struggling to make sense of that but I'm sure they know what they're talking about. Maybe some sort of active thing in the audio interface? Anyway, good luck (and let me know how it goes if you get a chance).
Hey, I think it should work. Which one would you want to be in charge? It can good to try both. Do you have aux cable, or mono cable, or a Y-cable? I think any should work, but the details may shift, depending. Lmk and then i can set it up to confirm, get back to you with the results👍🏻
@@undulations I'm honestly quite new to all this stuff, still slowly learning. I was hoping to set things up in a similar manner to how you had the bastl drum connected with the nts-1 in the video on connectivity for the bastl drum you did. All that being said, I only have aux cables, and y splitter(both a stereo to stereo splitter and a stereo to mono splitter). I suppose I should get some mono cables too, lol. Thought I had covered my bases finally.
@@Sicbay138 Well, the important one for the Kastle is the stereo to dual mono Y-cable, so let's go with that. Next, I didn't have much luck with using the Kastle square lfo as a sync in signal for the CS2, sounds kind of erratic. So, based on that, let's do the following: CS2 and Kastle on, listen to the Kastle (all settings minimized), and then patch i/o left to the pitch_mod on the Kastle, turn up the Pitch Mod halfway, and Pitch up a little. You should hear a low tone. Next plug the stereo of the Y-cable into the Kastle i/o and one of the mono plugs into the CS2 sync out. If you hear beeping that is the sync signal, if not switch to the other mono plug, then hopefully beeping. So the sync is coming in on i/o left. Remove the patch cable. Next, patch up the following on the Kastle: i/o Left to lfo reset stepped lfo to timbre mod plus to mode mode to bit in OSC to OSC Out Then timbre mod at 1:00, waveshape at 10:00, and lfo rate at 12:00. The synchronization for this is sort of "loose". If you set the two devices close (cs2 tempo and kastle lfo rate) then the Kastle will sort of "lock on" to the CS2. Now, no idea if you have an audio mixer, but you can plug the other mono plug into the CS2 headphone jack (turn up cs2 volume, line out may be louder, i forgot to check), and then patch i/o right into OSC OUT. This let's you hear the CS2 out of the Kastle audio. You can hopefully play an arp preset, try to tune the Kastle timbre to match. I got a pretty cool little groove going this way :) Anyway, best of luck! Interesting question, not sure if I've ever done it before🤔? Thanks for watching!
@@undulations About to try all this out finally! Had a very busy last couple days. I very much appreciate you taking the time to try it out and explain things to me. Definitely about to have lots of fun!
Just got it - and did i just find the "easter egg"in this synth? - there is nowhere mentioned about an "HOLD" function to keep the notes sounding after you release the keys - ok - just put some notes in the arpeggiator, and THEN hit both + and - simultaneously, then press a key, and volia: there you have it! same goes for single notes, if you for example want to make a drone sound! who do you want to thank? Me of course! synthplaying 62y granpa Levi in sweden!!
@@MrKeys57 it does indeed - at the bottom of the sheet that comes with the unit, under the 'other' section it tells you how to sustain (or as you say, hold..)
Looks good👍🏻 I hooked up the CS 2.0 to my pc running Ableton, using usb. I made a midi clip and set the track's output to the CS 2.0, put a few notes in the clip, and then automated the filter using an automation envelope. I also automated the wave parameters. Sounds really nice! It's fun to move through the presets and see how the same automations can give very different results. As for getting the sound back into the DAW? Pretty sure that will take an audio interface (I don't think it has audio out via usb). Thanks for asking this question - sometimes I need a reminder about what an amazing little synth it is!

App Axis Congratulations🏆! My second barely slept the 1st six months. I once fell asleep while eating a sandwich😂. Best wishes - play some Craft Synth lallabies😴
Hey, sorry it's taken me a while to reply - I would say the answer is "sort of". When you enter notes and rests into the "sequenced arpeggiator" (Modal's term for it) and then save the preset, the sequence becomes a part of the preset. So, what I tried was to save two identical presets (in terms of sound) that have two different sequences. You can hold a note to play the first sequence, then (assuming your finger isn't on the required key) you can switch to the other preset. If you quickly lift and replace your finger on the note then it will jump to the second preset. There was a little noise/click when I switched presets, and the timing of having to lift your finger on/off isn't perfect either - _but_ it's still a pretty cool method. Thanks for the question!
Hi again! have you found a way of slowing the sequencer/arpeggiator speed down? - or up for that matter? that function has eluded me so far, greets, Levi

So if you don't really need a micro freak as a wave table this may very well fill a gap what is your opinion please
Heath Wiseman I think that is totally correct👍🏻
I have all of these peices and I can't for the life of me get my USB midi keyboard powered by your exact same hub, to play sounds from the Skulpt. It's driving me insane.
I wish you showed exactly what connections you made to get everything working.
I figured it out… I ordered a few 3.5mm Ground loop isolators and problem solved
@@hectorpina682 Excellent!
@@undulations thank you for the detailed answer :)
Hi nice demo. Sequence data is global? Not saved along with the patch... Thanks
@@undulations I can't get the SQ-1 to control the synth at all. Thanks for reply
Thank you so much, not only can I now run the Craft but other mini synths I was having trouble connecting. All from one detailed comment, thanks.
@@ivon1688 Happy to hear it😀!
@@undulations
Tested with a stereo cable and mono 1/4 jack plug and the volume was cut by half.
@@undulations
Just got a superfast reply from Modal.
"The CRAFTsynth 2.0 has dual mono output on a 3.5mm jack, so you if you are using a balanced input its best to use a mono (TS) 3.5mm mono to 1/4 " TS cable."
Simple as that. :)
Okay, interesting. I'm struggling to make sense of that but I'm sure they know what they're talking about. Maybe some sort of active thing in the audio interface? Anyway, good luck (and let me know how it goes if you get a chance).
So...since this has clock sync and an arp, would I be able to connect it to the bastl's like you do with the NTS-1?
Next, patch up the following on the Kastle:
i/o Left to lfo reset
stepped lfo to timbre mod
plus to mode
mode to bit in
OSC to OSC Out
Then timbre mod at 1:00, waveshape at 10:00, and lfo rate at 12:00.
I got a pretty cool little groove going this way :)
Anyway, best of luck!
MrKeys57 Nice👍🏻!
It’s listed on the sheet that comes with the unit
@@massive323 the function "tone hold" or "voice hold" is not mentioned anywhere
@@MrKeys57 it does indeed - at the bottom of the sheet that comes with the unit, under the 'other' section it tells you how to sustain (or as you say, hold..)

Can you automate the filter (via the DAW and plugin) while tracking in the recording into a DAW?
I'm pretty sure - but I want to double-check about doing it directly via usb (as opposed to using some sort of midi box). Will let you know tomorrow👍🏻
Undulations u rock!

Hello there, can it change sequence pattern on the fly?
@@undulations thanks for answer
Hi again! have you found a way of slowing the sequencer/arpeggiator speed down? - or up for that matter? that function has eluded me so far, greets, Levi
