Black Manta Suite | Aquaman Duology (Original Soundtrack) by Rupert Gregson-Williams

Merry Christmas! Been very busy with life and other personal projects outside of my channel, so sadly the backlog of mine is growing by the day. But I wanted to start work on the Aquaman score, ESPECIALLY the very memorable and catchy theme for Black Manta. This is a very topical example of doing a lot with very little, because all the motif is is a simple, evil, kind of generic sounding tritone. But even with that almost childlike simplicity, Williams makes the surrounding elements and soundscape of Manta to lift it into these large scale, villainous theme. With a rushing string ostinato, repeating synth pulses, synth keyboard interludes, and tons of electronic distortion and beats, Black Manta's theme becomes a very badass, angry theme that's simple and to the point, yet never loses that edge or power with it's reprisals. There's a reason a theme with a simple motif has become replayed and beloved so much within the scope of DCEU villain themes, and it's because the musical texture of Manta shines through with great malice.

One of my favorite DCEU villains and one quite underrated, I love the actor, the music, his motivation, his fights, and above all the things that they were not afraid to make the design faithful to the comics, and it turned out great

My mom always noticed this theme in the film, Whenever Aquaman plays on the TV we We imitate it as if it were a super iconic song, but it's just a few low notes, I think that's why it's so iconic.

What I liked alot about Black Manta's cue is that as you pointed out, it does sound kind of more simple and straightforward in its approach but it still all sounds really cool and badass. I dig the upbeat hip-hop-like electronics, fun synths, rushing strings, imposing brass, heavy drums and some dramatic choirs. It reminds me of Man of Steel, Black Adam, Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther. There is also some hints of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 game in the mix as well. Ironically enough, there is some similar patterns with General Zod and Black Manta in terms of musical motifs. Check the track Arcade and you'll see what I mean. I was kind of surprised to not notice it the first time.
