  • This is one of those "bucket list" California rides that has a bit of everything. Technical climbing, amazing alpine scenery, treacherous chunk, big rocks and tons of smooth flow. I rode Mr. Toad's years ago with my brother and didn't really understand how anyone would enjoy it. Now I love this crazy stuff!

    Just imagine...
    All the shredders in the '80s, sending that trail on fully ridged frames with: long stems, narrow bars, rim brakes, high seats, and hard tires :o
    PS.
    Great vid,
    Good to see you guys riding together!

    That trail looks like so much fun. I LOVE those trails like that where you're constantly having to pick lines, and balance on your bike. I'm convinced that if you ride terrain like that all the time, your skills improve incrementally, simply because it trains you to move around on your bike and adjust on the fly. Not to mention...they're FUN TO RIDE!
    Great video as always...and Paul's panic sounds add to the adventure level. BTW....those granola bars have been around at least since the late 70's, because I used to eat them as an after school snack!!

    Did this ride in '94? Something like that, it was pretty epic but no shuttles, no full suspension. One of my favorites. Great video, thanks for posting.

    I'm glad you had some difficulties on the Top half of Toads. When I rode it, some of it felt impossible without crashing. When we did it, there was a young talented forestry worker who was clearing the trails with a huge chainsaw. He passed us going down Toads with this large chainsaw sticking out of his backpack, the bar pointing above his head by about a foot. I wish I got a picture of it!

    Maybe you can have your shop adjust that banjo fitting on your caliper so it points up some more. Add some thick clear frame decal where it's touching the frame too.

      @bkxc  6 лет назад +1

      Not a bad idea!

    • @markbour
      @markbour 6 лет назад

      Came to say this. You could loosen the banjo slightly and rotate yourself, but be sure to check the brake for feel as you might need to bleed it after.

    • @WasabiWei
      @WasabiWei 6 лет назад

      Same here. If you crack it just enough to bump it out to angle away from the chainstay you might not even get any air in the system. That banjo bolt was installed a bit too close to the chainstay to allow for suspension travel tightening the brake line.

      2 zip ties - one around seat stay and cable and a second one in between cable and seat stay, around the two pieces of the first zip tie to act as a spacer - pull'em tight, done.

    So I was totally going to do this same ride back in May based on videos I have seen. I went to Over the Top and everything based on your suggestion. The problem was, back in May, Mr Toads was still buried in snow. They ended up taking me up to Kingsbury and I did Tahoe Rim to Van Sickle instead. I remember seeing your video for that too. It was a lot of pain with a lot of pleasure. So much technical climbing but the downhill payoff was sweet. I had to laugh a little when I saw you pull that granola bar out too. Cheap and yet satisfying. I get those same ones every now and then for my trips.

    • @bkxc

    You can wrap a piece of an old inner tube around the frame under the brake line, works much better than any tape you can buy. If you want it to look better, chop 2 inches off a thick velcro chainstay protector to put under there. I'd also turn the fitting about 45 degrees clockwise, there might be less rubbing overall if there's no contact when the shock is fully extended.

    • @bkxc
      @bkxc  6 лет назад

      I ended up doing some velcro!

    Awesome video. Your brake hose needs moving up slightly from the calliper. That will give you the clearance you need to stop the hose rubbing the frame. The quick way is to gently undo the brake hose and gently with the other hand guide the brake hose Ferrell up as you do the Allen bolt back up. Make sure as you tighten it up keep you hand on the brake Ferrell, so not to allow it to move up to high. Just a tip, if it makes sense. Keep rocking BKXC

    • @bkxc

      BKXC totally understandable. It’s easy for me to say what I would do as I have been a car technician for over 25 years. 👊. Easy to mess that job up and end up with brake fluid coming out. 🙈

    About the brake cable rubbing. I had the same issue on my bike but solved it with 3M adventure guard it has been a full year and the 3M stuff is flawless. I actually use it on tons of places now. It is rated to guard windshield of offroad adventure SUVs and their headlamps so top notch stuff.

      My bad, I bought it a while ago and remembered the name wrong, I have a 1 meter roll at home and already put it on the downtube, top tube, everywhere where cables might rub. The install is extremely easy but cutting it is a PAIN, I got easy access to a printers cutter and did it there after I wrecked some of it.
      p.s. I will send you a photo of the installation tomorrow morning through your contact form

    Hi Brian, Nice video of a great trail. I think most people ride it as a loop going up Armstrong Pass to TRT.

    If you angled the banjo bolt further up on the rear brake caliper would that fix the problem?

    • @bkxc
      @bkxc  6 лет назад

      I think it would, but I'm afraid of leakage and no bleed kit yet.

      Take it to a bike shop and they'll do it for you, easy peasy :)

    6:43, I went OTB trying to boost off that rock last year doing Rose to Toads. Note to self, don't get aggressive 11 hours into a ride!
    Loved that trail since the 90's though, tech at the top, flow at the bottom!

    Frame Scratch & Rub: Have you looked into "Helicopter Tape?" Amazon sells 3M's version in 6" sheets. I LOVE IT. Been using it for years on all my bikes, especially my MTB. Cable rub is hell.

    Loosen the banjo bolt on the rear hose. Just enough to move the hose up and off the frame then tighten the banjo bolt.

    • @bkxc
      @bkxc  6 лет назад

      I was afraid of leakage from the bolt since I don't know what I'm doing

    • @hyw079
      @hyw079 6 лет назад

      Just loosen enough to move the line. Fluid should not come out. If a little does, it's ok. Just don't pull your levers.

    Get one of the rubber chain guards for both sides of the swing arm and your cable won't rub through it!

    I had the same issue with the 661 D3O knee pads dude - first few rides were horrendously sweaty/slippy, now they're the most comfortable pads I've ever used an stay right where you put them - so either we broke them in, or we've just toned our quads enough that they stick in place! :D

    Try placing a few layers of electrical tape around the hose instead of on the frame. Might be easier to monitor and to simply add layers after several rides if a permanent fix can’t be performed.

    Awesome ride Brian I love the climb techy section and clearing some of it. This is all "Brian's Line" from start to finish. Oh I have the same issue with that cable rubbing to the frame its annoying I have fixed it with a Velcro Loop and just taped it with some electric tape and the rubbing is solve no more issue because if it rub to the loop it just glide. My 2 cents. Like and Shared as always.

    Wrap a piece of inner tube to protect your frame from the brake line. Not the cleanest most beautifull way but it works fine and it's very durable.

    • @bkxc
      @bkxc  6 лет назад

      Nice, I have seen the tube wrap thing working well in the past.
