    I've seen a bunch of videos like yours and in every one of them it comes the point for the german honesty. As an german native I can say, that its very funny but cool to see, that people like our honesty, even its sounds a bit rude sometimes. But we don't bite, I promise :D

    great video! With a lot of knowledge about my country and our customs. Some RUclipsrs make videos like...."I don't know anything about germany, but I will make a video anyway". I like it really very much if foreigners are interested and willing to change there mind, open for new things and start asking questions like "why is it that way, I wanna know!" And I love the enthusiasm that some foreigners show about germany.
    The best video about germany I have seen so far!

    Some homemade fun statistics regarding Sundays, vacation and recuperation: In Germany we have also a lot of holidays which means for most people a day off since offices, most factories and most shops are closed. The number of such holidays varies from state to state - many such holidays had a religious background originally, so there are "catholic" and "protestant" holidays as well, and the states determine which are "official" holidays where the shops are closed. The states with the most such holidays are (today) the most rich and wealthy, also. So wealth comes with (or by) less working days.

    To reduce your confusion about the 20 or 24 days of paid vacation: the relevant law (Bundesurlaubsgesetz) states, that any worker must have 24 days of paid vacation. However, it also assumes 6 working days per week. So this actually must be read as: 4 weeks of paid vacation. This in reverse means, if you do have only 5 working days per week (fairly common in Germany), you'll have 20 days of paid vacation! In fact, this rule is generally used for any amount of working days per week. So e.g. for 3 working days/week you'll get 12 days of vacation, also 4 weeks. Just as a sidenote: trade (labour/labor) unions are rather strong here in Germany, and so for a lot of germans up to 6 weeks (30 days) of paid vacation are fairly common (where the payment for each vacation day often also is raised by up to 50%).

      Hey thanks for the info :-) That's good to know. It's true I should have actually mentioned that many people get 30 days of vacation since that's pretty standard for a lot of companies and some sectors. I actually wanted to also talk about things like the Betriebsrat but I left it out. Next time ;-)

    A little bit of german Klugscheissing: The Alster is not a lake, it's a river. The nicest part of the Alster looks like it's a lake, split in two parts. Binnen- and Aussenalster, can be translated as inner and outer Alster. In a absolute beautyful city this are two of the nicest places. But my favorite place of my hometown is the "Elbstrand", a beach section at river Elbe. On one side of the river is beach and on the other is the harbour. So you can sit on the beach in a warm summer night, drink a beer and watch the giant ships passing. Awesome!

    Paid off days depend on work days per week. As you mentioned sundays most people not work. Usually your work Time is 35-45 Hours per week working „Full Time“ your seventh day is free by law.
    Minimum paid off days by law depend a 5 or 6 day week of work. So If you work 5 days a week ( usually between 7 and 9 Hours a day ) you must receive 20 days off. 6days week = 24 days.
    BTW Universal healthcare not only covers Services at doctors and ambulance it also Covers Time After 6 weeks of sick days. The First 6 weeks in year you are ill or in Hospital etc ( any Time a doc set you free from work by prescription ) must be Full paid by your employer.
    After 6 weeks Public Health insurance Kicks in still paying your medical needs and keep on paying 60% of your normal wages.
    If you you work for a Company with more than 10 employees and for longer than 6 months you cant be fired for 24 months.. .
    BTW paid off days above are minimum by law. Depending on contracts between a union and employers, or employers by themself, for a 45 years old worker ( 8h a day, 5 days a week) 40 days paid off days = 8 weeks a years... are totally possible...

    Hello, I was wondering if you could answer a question that’s been bugging me? When I visited Hamburg about 8yrs ago I was in a restaurant and noticed everyone had a neck chain with a lump of metal on it. When they finished their food they would suck on this metal and I was told it was to neutralise their breath. I have never seen this before or since and my friends think I’m lying!! Does anyone have any comments on this??

    About the "closed on Sundays" theme often be shown as a SPECIAL here in Europe / Germany ;) It Comes out of the Christian livestyle because as it was writen in 2.Mose 23:12 (german Version).Over hundreds of years europe was been farced bei the church to do so. On a sunday you have to go to the church and pray AND SPEND to the holy men there ;)

    Dear visitors, i have no problems to talk with you in english, but do me a favour and don't call the city of Hamburg as "Haemburg" or Hämburg, because its not about "ham". You also probably know the german word "kindergarten". Think about the letter A in this word and you have the right pronaunciation for the A in "Hamburg". Otherwise it's your fault when i will get ear-cancer.

    Your cuts in the video have really supported your narration.
    However, you have to be a very lonely Canadian if you think that consuming is not a "holy good" and making money is not a religion.
    But surely you can hide well, in huge Canada, somewhere in the wilderness in a log cabin.
    Americans would call you a social romantic, or even a communist.
    Free study, another educational approach by Humboldt, a german scientist. In the US and UK, the students are milked until they can`t take any more. They are sent with high debts in their often uncertain working life. Does society have a general educational requirement or does it follow the performance idea of capitalism?
    But do not despair, there are a lot of German politicians who do not rest until we have American hire and fire conditions, it only takes a little bit longer.
    The European welfare state is also defined as do not as America or the English-speaking world does.
    But neo-liberalism is also going on here.
    I reject the US model, canada is a much better place for sure ;-)

    • @thegermancanadian9421
      @thegermancanadian9421  7 лет назад +3

      Hi, thank you for your comment and for the information :-) Canada does indeed have a stronger social welfare system than the U.S. and the tuition fees are lower than the U.S. Germany though has a much stronger welfare system than Canada and the tuition fees, while low compared to the U.S., are still quite high. Yes, there are politicians here that want to cut things like employee rights further. I personally hope that they do not succeed in doing that.

    • @hoobymarburg167
      @hoobymarburg167 7 лет назад +4

      Yes, I hope the same, that Canada is not going down that road.
      The welfare state was supposed to be the third way between the devastating communist model and the cold cynical neo-liberal capitalistic model.
      In the moment Germany spends about 50% of it`s tax revenue for social purposes, less then the scandinavian countries.
      For the left it is never enough and for the right it is a nightmare.
      They fear that business owners could flee the country.
      It`s a challenge to find the right balance I guess.
      I hope that Canada joins the EU in fighting that terrible Trump ambition.
      I don`t want to live in a Trump world ;-)
      Have a nice day
