    My parents took me to New York to see Hello Dolly and the sights. We decided to see a second show, but couldn't decide. I suggested Sweet Charity. They thought it wasn't appropriate for a 12-yr-old. They decided to ask an expert for advice; our waiter. He agreed with me. We all loved the show.

      Michael Fosse Michael, I was Fosse’s book assistant on Chicago. In spite of the stellar resumes of the creators of this series, it was wrong to tell his story against “Me, too” and they did not tell his truth. He was a genius who couldn’t suffer fools and there were a lot of them around. He liked me because I told him the truth. He was one of the funniest people I ever met, and he was the world’s best friend. He had quite a posse. I had the time of my life and got a graduate education in theater.

With such extraordinary talent you'd never expect such openness and self knowledge, but it was there & that showed in everything the 3 of them did. The story of Verdon and Fosse is a total picture of life in mid-late 20thC theatre. Their own lives were complete vaudeville. I think the series here gave us performances as balanced as they could have been and the style and costumes and faithful dance recreations were very strong. Fosse was portrayed a little more cynical than his personality was in appearance but that highlighted his demons. Williams was very strong and was eerie channeling Verdon...she just did not have the killer dance body at all. Fosse and Verdon like a multitude of of people in the world of show business were victims and survivors of sexual abuse. Gwen was was better adjusted than Bob was to her traumas. Bob fell into the hedonistic cycles and the inability to be honest about his abusive antics and projections on innocent people. And naturally this was directed on the females all around him... with few escaping his tricks. Gwen became codependent and suffered from low self esteem no doubt feeling she had to rescue every man. This was clearly guilt over her child she left behind to work after being raped into marriage. Between the both of them they managed at different stages to stay involved in the business and live creator/ muse/ collaborative colleague dynamics. This is no small feat. It’s a shame that Bob couldn’t be treated for his neurosi. He became the more famous. Fosse the choreographer is absolutely legend. It was legend by the 1980’s. I think Gwen is remembered more as the famous magical dance star that she really, really was. I really like that his crew carried the style all over the world spearheaded by luminaries Ben Vereen and Ann Reinking. The series certainly showed “life in a trunk” and the weary journey of “treading the boards” from start to finish. Their legacy is growing every decade. How men and women fight with each other using sexuality, talent , loneliness, joy and movement. Their message is manifold. For the world to learn and discover. But mostly to be utterly entertained.

    A 13 year old boy with grown women is most certainly statutory rape at least and molestation at best for certain. I'm sure it scarred him, but his (Fosse) addictions and disregard for staying faithful in marriage may have been a symptom of such abuse, i do not view it as a valid excuse for him.
    Every case and person is different, and this is not in any way meant a generalization from him, to any other victim. Every individual deals with things in their own way.

    • @heinleinreader
      @heinleinreader 2 года назад

      In that time and place, that would not have been called statutory rape perpetrated on a 13 year old boy. Had a man done it then to him, yes, it would have been. But a woman, or in his case a number of grown women, doing so would have been considered "completing his education". This is considered wrong in today's world, and it is an accurate estimation by today's standards, but at that time and place it was not. Context matters. It was like Roddenberry hiring an Asian man and a black woman to the major cast of a series set in the far future was, by the context of the time of the setting, normal. By the context of the time of the show, however, it was a departure, unheard of and without precedent. The network pleaded with Roddenberry to change the casting, or change the roles. Roddenberry would do neither, and he nearly lost the opportunity to make the show. Then the network had a change in executives. They gave him a little rope, and basically told him the choice was his. The question was, would he use that rope to tie a tether or a noose?

    Nobody here is looking to besmirch Michelle Williams or her dedication to effectively donning the skin of beloved, and unforgettable Gwen Verdon in the FX series, 'Fosse/Verdon.' What is at issue here, (and a DAMN BIG ISSUE at that) is the seemingly insidious, one sided, uneven playing field this fictionalized TV show casts upon its subjects, legendary Broadway choreographer Bob Fosse and his archetypal muse and chief collaborator Gwen Verdon.
    The series production values were phenomenal, the actors top drawer, and yet thankfully several major players (Ann Reinking and John Rubenstein among others) affirmed our disappointments in their own write-ups on the series. It was apparent in the first NYTimes write-up that came out about Fosse/Verdon, they clearly were trying to warn us. It's a damn shame this series has gone off the deep end the way it has. Michelle Williams is so amazing, and this series could have catapulted Bob and Gwen's legacy to wonderful, ground breaking new heights. What it's done instead is leave many of us awash in an extremely uneven, dour and heavy handed soap opera. NICE GOING producers... you didn't need to destroy Bob Fosse utterly in your depiction, in order to elevate Gwen to the heights she clearly deserved. Hope you have some semblance of understanding with how angry so many of us are, and will remain…
    That's the tricky thing about the written word vs a creative visual medium which 'allegedly' represents the facts. Bob Fosse may very well have been 'messed up' but the bottom line was he was a Maverick, 'think outside the box' artistic genius who worked through his 'issues' more often than not, and in doing so created a never to be repeated place for himself, and his amazing wife/partner Gwen. There could be any number of reasons why the series seemed more intent on portraying Bob as a nut job, rather than as the artistic genius he was...(disgruntled daughter who needs some bucks maybe?) but sadly it is in fact guilty of doing just that. It spends WAY too much time hurling the viewer into one extremely maudlin, dark, mentally addled 'Bob' scenario after another till frankly it became a tiresome, overdone gimmick. I could literally feel my blood pressure elevating while watching that damn show, because I just knew it was taking an irresponsible, salacious stance in its portrayal of him.

      This mini series could have caused Fosse's status to be lowered in my imagination, could have broken the spell of his creative magnificence.

      Fosse was undoubtedly a genius. He was also a lifelong dickhead of epic proportions. The series is fair in its portrayal of him and all Gwen did for him. The age of the white male genius who gets to treat everyone else like shit without being (at least posthumously) shown for exactly who he is is very much over now, friend. If they had simply glorified Fosse (as many productions have already done), this thing wouldn't have been worth making. Bob Fosse had an incredible impact on the landscape of dance. And a terrible impact on those, esp. women, around him.

      I binge watched it in one weekend and was fascinated. My early dance classes were to Fosse style Jazz. Were you a fan of Fosse or Verdon before? I've seen the musicals Dancin', Chicago, and others. Loved "All That Jazz". I'm not sure what I'd have thought of it without that background. Watching it gave me insight into the dance style and filled in much of what I didn't know about his life with Verdon.
