I saw her one women show in Los Angeles back in the early 1980s and remember this very well. A superb performer and dancer I consider myself fortunate to see her in person.
This is the best dance lesson around. and the fabulous Shirlet MacLaine, I am amazed from this old dancer's perspective- I am so impressed.
The one & only Shirley MacLaine! Nobody, in modern days has this talent.
Shirley MacLaine could do it all... seriously a great talent for all time!
Linda Kaye And so nice of her to share w/ us her amazing talent at a stopover on Earth during her travel through time and space... (wink)
Well, except be a loving mother... THAT she could not do.
Too bad she was nuts
I could watch Fosse choreography all day
Shirley... Just a class act.. Sooo professional with a great show of timing and class acting. Shirley was always at the top of her game and always belted out a 100%. 45+ years here and still damned professional, classy and top notch. Love this lady...
This may well be the best dance number ever made for television. Note how the directer used mostly wide shots because Shirley and co. really knew how to dance.
'even if you sit at the front of the bus... you gotta get down like you're going right back there.' wow. this piece is incredible, but maaaaaaaan it says a lot about history...
Fantastic,,,,not like she’s a kid here anymore. What amazing talent and energy
I was fortunate enough to work in the USA for three years, and during that time I managed to see one of her shows. I have always like Shirley, but to see her perform live was simply mesmerising, the way she can move her body parts in different directions is incredible, it is as though her bones are not connected like a standard "Normal" person. The way she interprets the music is unique.
Boys and girls this is what real talent is. ❤
Ain’t it the truth!
Professional dancers like these are amazing. They spend years learning to do a very difficult thing with precision and accurate timing in order to make it look effortless. Yet they remain almost always anonymous to the people for whom they're performing.
Like an Olympic athlete team.
This is so Real. Like the ladies of the chorus of a huge singers. However, they are prepared to be anonymous. They know it.
My eye always went to background dancers...they seemed to work so much harder, hence more entertaining to observe....
I am in awe of them, OBXN. It takes dedication to be good. I once met a 19-year old ballerina who had dedicated her young life to dance, made it into the San Francisco Ballet and almost immediately her career was ended. All that work, focus and training lost in an injury.
OBXN, right ?Are you serious ? Sure you are not....Can you dance a bit ? Dancers just move about gracefully and hardly ever speak and write... So... Cheers to you anyway ha ha ha!!!
In the subtitles for the "black choreographers" segment, the name Geoffrey Holden is displayed. That should be Geoffrey Holder, with an R at the end. Pretty sure Shirley said it correctly, just hard to hear. She had a right to be a bit winded. Fabulous dancing.
For those who didn't know, MacLaine got her big Broadway break as a chorus dancer in Pajama Game, when she understudied Carol Haney. Haney was famous for never missing a show…until she did. Shirley went on, and a star was born. Sounds like a movie plot but absolutely true.
unfortunately haney had severe stage fright for some reason and i think even was a drinker but i have seen her dance and cant understand why cause shes awesome!!
🙏👌👍👏😘🙏
She did that long routine in heels? Are you kidding me??? (What a great talent, and ever-so-beautiful.)
She did everything in her heels.
Jerry Boscia and at age 46.
Easier to dance in heels.
@@troyannbladsacker1811 What??? On what planet?
@@jerryboscia9956 I'm a female and have taken dancing most of my life. It is definitely easier to tap dance especially in heels. The steps are easier to do. Also jazz steps.
Holy smoke, Shirley is amazing! Never realized her dancing talents. Wow!!
IKR Same here!!
she wanted to be a ballerina, but was too tall so she went into acting..
See Can Can, the movie. McClain was amazing in that.
Her and her brother Warren Beatty are such delight and ingenious cooks.. such talent in one family ... we often forget what an amazing dancer Shirley. Maclaine was because she is such a damn good actress as well.. but this performance from 1980 when she was 46 is such a tour de force ... thank God for RUclips to remind us!
I remember seeing snippets of this when she was on 60 minutes. It is such a treasure to see this in it's entirety. A wonderful mix of styles utilizing Sweet Georgia Brown. This, my friends, is entertainment!!!!
It is a show she made in 1980: Every little movement!Which means she was 46 at this time, only 3 years before she made 'Terms of endearment'.
Tor Erik Sørensen not too shabby!
Her thigh muscles are strong enough to walk a chain up them in a CONTROLLED fashion. That's strength and an a amazing knowledge of what your body can do and how to get it to do it. Dancers are amazing.
Tor Erik Sørensen llissa
Just beauty. Those LEGS....WOW!
GTFOOH 😲😲😲
"she was 46 at this time"
Shirley MacLaine is one heck of a triple threat--multi talented, effortlessly cool, and makes it all look so easy. What a joy she is to watch! I just love her.
I completely agree! ♡
So graceful and lithe. She's the standard by which I judge most dancers.
I NEVER SEE ANYTHING LIKE THIS IN MY LIFE. GOD BLESS HER.
Never knew Shirley McClaine could move like that! I am now more impressed with her talent and have gained even more respect for her as an entertainer.
LaDaryl Barker wow, really? Have you never seen Sweet Charity? Gotta put that one on your must watch list! I always felt that movie was some of the best dancing Hollywood ever did, and Shirley was the star of it. I hope you enjoy it! Shirley was a dancer before she was ever a Hollywood actress - she originally wanted to be a ballet dancer, but she got too tall. I always admired, though, that she gracefully slid into acting, and never tried to fight the progress of time. She always found roles that suited her as she aged and she excelled in all of them!
Shirley is mesmerizing! Can watch her over & over. My favorite dancer!!
I saw her one woman show and I remember this well 30 years ago. a terrific entertainer .
What a dancer ! And funny too. Never takes herself seriously. I just love her. She’s also a great actress in The Apartment or Some came running for example, mythical movies to me. ❤️❤️❤️
Wow. She is in such great shape. Tremendous exertion and she never stopped once.
It's simple, Shirley Mc Lane is a Goddess, that's all. I'm from Mexico city and the first movie I saw was Sweet Charity. I was in shock and I only was 14 years old. I stil love her. I know and I learned all the songs from the movie.
Shirley MacLaine > so versatile! Is there anything you can't do? Love you!!!
Stunning, this is dance this is art!
OMG I didn't know sshe can do this wow..
I already liked her as a grandmother as comedian
With this talent at young age wooow
This made my body hurt all over just watching it..., I love Shirley! she is fabulous .
I remember seeing this special. I'd forgotten that Shirley was a helluva dancer! I think she was in her 40s when this aired. NOT BAD!
Miss MacLaine was a ASTONISHING DANCER!...And a GOOD ACTRESS TOO!...I love so much the movies she do directed by the GREAT BILLY WILDER and with that WONDERFUL ACTOR CALLED JACK LEMMON!...
Shirley could do it all
Sing, dance and act
What a package
And bundle of energy
She was genuine triple threat: great singer, actress and dancer. Ah, and she was an amazing writer, wrote about twelve books or so. A traveler who was a great researcher of the paranormal. Her book Out on the Limb published in 1983, the same year she go the Oscar for her role in Terms of Endearment is still in print today.
sorellman Shirley M. was a terrible singer but I do appreciate her other talents.
When she came to Buenos Aires, Argentina, to do a one night show in a theater, she opened saying: Hello everybody!! I am Warren Beatty's sister!!! And we laughed and clapped!!!
For the longest time I thought Shirley MacClaine was unable to dance: Jazz hands, smiles, and stances for applause we're all I thought she could do -- No kicks. I'm so glad for RUclips to show me otherwise!
You'll see her why Shirley MacLaine is one of my favorites - and not just because she looks like my late wife Marty . . .
I mean she;s truly amazing
I’ve admired Shirley since “Terms of Endearment”....watching this makes me love her even more.
Shirley was amazing 🙏🙏🙏
I never realized what a brilliant and exceptional dancer Shirley was!!!!
I had forgotten what an amazing dancer she was and such high energy.
YESSSSS! More of this please! Lifts my spirits!
Great to see Shirley as I remembered her as a child.
watching this 12/22. Awesome!! Beautiful women, beautiful dancer and actor. Wow!!
I was lucky enough to see her show on broadway , I enjoyed it so much ! It was over and I wanted to see it again.
Her stamina is absolutely remarkable!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Shirley MacLaine is a treasure.
I wonder why people do not know that she is a real good dancer. She knows everything what a dancer must know... A great comedian of our time!
ALSO A FINE ACTRESS....
I had no idea.
Dancing has come all long way since then. I DO believe professional dancers now a days are better and much more diverse in their dance moves!
It's easy to forget that Sshe began as a dancer and here she's still got it.
OMG, She must have the most perfect proportionate figure ever!
I had no idea Shirley MacLaine could do splits and kicks! I'm pleasantly surprised!
That's pretty much how Shirley got her start in show biz.
Yes. She is a very talented dancer and actress.
She's a great great dancer and great great actress
She's got legs!
And she knows how to use them!
Profesionals only do this ...perfect! And at 43. Even better
Go shirley you truly represented the stars of the 1940s and 1950era.such as betty hutton judy garland doris day betty grable rita hayworth fred astaire gene kelly and my beloved child star shirley temple.you showed my generation souls have no color.ive always none a entertainer was a entertainer.if we as a people could evet get over this thing of race we would be better.we all was born in the funk.we all can get down with the funk.
Wow look at those long legs they go on forever...
Ironbutterfly God how many times have I've been told this. Comes in handy tho, all the skating and dancing I do.
uyyu
Ann Reinking's are much longer!
they go up and make a ass of themself
Oh, that's a GROANER!
Great stuff. Shirley MacLaine one of my top heroines of modern jazz dance. Brilliant.
Freakin love this ..full of life colors...the black thing...hahha..just shake it! love it!
Shirley was lucky to be a performer and dancer in her time. Her back was so inflexible. Never get away with that now. Always liked her as a performer.
I love her so much. Read all her books and loved her more.
Yaaaaaassss, honey! This was so exquisite, I'll even excuse her from tryna talk "jive" during the "Black" sequence. What a force.... and those stems! She did all that in heels. WOWZERS!
As a woman, it is easier to dance in heels especially tap.
She owes an apology for that part. It was poorly done and offensive and incorrect. 😀However, the other aspects of the show were great.
@@paulasuniverse5029 I agree but it was a different time and acceptable back then.
Bravooo!!!! I love you Shirley. Simply the Best! 😍😍😍❤❤❤👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Fantastic!! Shirley’s the greatest...
💀 I love Shirley this video is historical and a sign of the times. She literally said "dance black" 🤣 they brought out 1 black dancer. Thank you for posting it. We need proof of the past like this to truly reference the way our world had changed. For reference I'm black, I'm not offended this is the reality of gentrification, people were just bold enough to say what they were thinking back then with no filter.
This was fabulous and Shirley looked flawless.
I literally had no idea Shirley danced, I thought she was just an actress. This was fantastic! She was an amazing dancer. Superb background dancers too.
Oh la la Shirley Mclaine I never ever thought shes this great at dancing.
How can anyone not like this!
Absolutely amazing talent! Thank you for sharing this. Can you imagine the time and effort in daily the rehearsals? O m g AMAZING
This was incredible I thoroughly enjoyed this
Shirley so talented
Thanks for uploading this
Fosse...ONLY the BEST!
What a talent. I've always enjoyed watching her.
Not long after this I saw in London in her show. I was entranced. Jxxx
I was raised to LOVE Shirley MacLaine. My mother knew she was a cut above the rest 60 years ago, before her political and ethical commitments became popular and influential.
I saw her do this live in Seattle. She was just magnificent.
This is a master class!
One of the mysteries of the universe: how do women perform high kicking choreography in high heels? One misstep and your ankles are toast.
Shirley MacLaine is a goddess!!!
ALL HAD been danced BEFORE! With THIS STARS! In the 21 century - Only NEW versions!
Awesome, stunning! In the past we had a trully stars!
Shirley, surely you surely know what an inspiration you have been.
Wow Shirley! I had no idea...this woman was in her late 40s at the time...in heels! I would have dropped dead in the first 3 minutes
US had those fantastic dancers, we in UK had...Lionel Blair (sorry Lionel)
Brilliant she was and is!!!
I had forgotten what she was originally famous for.....man she could dance
Brilliant I saw her Vegas in 1980x Awesome and have been an am dram dancer in some of her musicals xx
She is such an athlete! I'd love to see a documentary about her life. What an interesting woman.
She's dancing in heels so high that I couldn't even stand up in them.
Just what I needed..thanks
Замечательная! Талантливая! Любимая!
A wonderful woman an actrice! I like her so long!!
I have this routine on one of Shirley's live show TV specials.
Shirley in Fosse is the best
perfection ✨
Wow Bob Fosse choreography is so clear.
My goodness! She is so talented!!!!
Anyone else notice the start of Michael Jackson's iconic "Billie Jean" Motown 25 performance at 3:58? What an influence Bob Fosse had.
Beautiful set. Thank you
Never knew Shirley was such an amazing dancer.
Michelangelo Miguel That’s because by the time she came along, musicals were almost always only seen on the stage. She came along too late for the movie musicals.
She earned her fame no doubt. She didn't need to do all this hard work. She already made it years ago.
