  • Here is a viewer question from Vont en Bateau:
I've seen your videos on Jacques Rivette's Out 1: Noli Me Tangere, which I've seen and adore (I watched it all during one day off of work), but what are your thoughts on Celine and Julie Go Boating? Also, your thoughts on Shuji Terayama's Pastoral: To Die in the Country as well as Lindsay Anderson's O Lucky Man?
And the link to my video discussion
    on the film is here:
Criterion Collection 2021 Releases: CÉLINE AND JULIE GO BOATING (Spine No. 1069) • Criterion Collection 2...

Shallow? Imagine how much more shallow we would be without the benefit of experiencing the films that have enriched us. Neh? I think your comments are quite astute, but why not continue to reach for excellence, yes? I have been watching your videos for 8 months or more now and I find your collection to be of the highest quality, it is enviable even. I appreciate your positive and friendly outlook and look forward to seeing more of your videos. On a different, more of a downer note, I was saddened today to hear of the passing of Shin’ichi Chiba. When I lived in Okinawa I would see those.. I guess Shaw Brother films and loved seeing him perform. Then was so surprised years later when Kill Bill was released. Be seeing you. You are very very kind. Thank you so much.
And yes, it was very sad about the passing of legend Shinichi Chiba.

I'll confess that I won't be able to give my most detailed thoughts on these questions due to not having seen half of them sadly. I do know that Out1 : Noli Me Tangere is an extremely long work that runs nearly 13 hours but has gotten critical acclaim from Jacques Rivette (who is known for extremely long films). I also don't know much about Shuji Terayama's Pastoral: To Die in the Country either though I know it was one of several films that the director did along with plays, essays, short stories, short films and poems. The guy was a jack of all trades when it came to all kinds of writing!
For Celine and Julie Go Boating I gave my thoughts on the film on Daisuke's video but to recap I will say it is a wonderful, if not trippy film which feels like it would come out of the French New Wave even though it was a little past that period. It feels like two separate films to me somehow! As far as Lindsay Anderson's O Lucky Man! I had the pleasure of watching that on the Criterion Channel and it is a solid film that could be allegory on capitalist society. It is one of three films in the Mick Travis Trilogy which includes If.... and Brittania Hospitall. While most would say O Lucky Man! is the best of the 3 I will say that I'm more of a fan of If... over the others but O Lucky Man! did take me to interesting places and I felt it was all about the journey over the end of the movie. Still it comes recommended!

Very interesting questions and answer Daisuke. The only film mentioned that I know of is O Lucky Man, and it’s been a long time since I’ve seen that film, so it’s really great to hear you talk about that film and the others mentioned. Thank you again for the video, I hope you’re having a great day Daisuke. Take care!

Rivette, Terayama and Anderson… what an amazing trio! I feel that all three are sadly under-appreciated to some extent. It’s especially sad how poorly available certain Rivette and Terayama films are, especially considering how both directors made multiple masterpieces and their films are very unique, mysterious, layered, beautiful and endlessly fascinating. Wonderful question and I enjoyed hearing your answers. All the best!

Yes, I wish I had all the time in the world to watch these kinds of movies. It takes the rare moments of personal time to get a chance at catching up on or revisiting old favorites. I hope to see this Celine and Julie Go Boating movie one day as I remember a great commenter and RUclipsr Mr. Roger Kirby giving a great amount of praise to that movie that made it sound amazing. Hope you're watching some good stuff this weekend! Cheers!
