System Of A Down is considered to be one of the most unpredictable bands of the past 20 years because of their abrupt musical shifts and hectic arrangements.
Their signature track "Chop Suey!" took this concept to a whole new level when it was released on their album Toxicity in 2001.
In this Chop Suey! guitar lesson I will teach you how to play every riff in this hard rock gem, including the little guitar overdubs flying around all over the place.
Guitarist Daron Malakian employs everything from fast strumming to muted arpeggio riffs, alternate picked power chord riffs and more to give "Chop Suey!" the frantic energy that is heard throughout most of the track.
First off, as I explain in the video lesson, the tuning that "Chop Suey!" is in is dropped C. The song doesn't really sound right without that tuning. Low to high the guitar strings will be tuned C G C F A D.
The opening of the song contains a rapid strummed acoustic guitar part with a couple of guitar overdubs. At the beginning of the lesson video I perform all of those riffs one after the other but you will need another guitar player or two to help you if you want the song to sound like the record.
From there we get to the fast main riff consisting of alternate picking with constantly moving power chords. This riff takes a lot of synchronization between the picking and fretting hands, so you may want to take your time get it up to speed so it won't sound sloppy.
The verse of "Chop Suey!" contains a lot of start and stop rhythms. It can be quite unorthodox to play in the beginning. But, if you are very familiar with how the song sounds (which of course you should be), it won't take long to get into the groove of the verse riffs. There is actually a very simple rhythm pattern being played in the verse. After you understand that pattern it should come pretty to you.
The chorus contains a cool muted arpeggio riff along with the same overdub we played in the intro of the song. Even though the chorus is a lot more laid back than the verse, make sure you don't get lazy with the rhythmic groove of that section. It is pretty simple to play but can be a bit deceptive if you don't pay attention to what you are doing.
At the end of the song there is a different version of the chorus that consists of big sustained power chords. This last chorus is by far the easiest part of the song to play. If you make it to that point in the song successfully, I guess you can just sit back and enjoy the ride after a job well done. :)

Doing the intro with distortion is how they play it live, which I really like. Worst thing for me is trying to alternate pick. I can only downpick

Ya dude all you need to do is just get the hang of alternate or tremolo picking and practise the finger movements slowly. Then speed up, and get faster and faster and eventually you will be able to play it normally.

Don't wrapped around the note madness. If you are tuned in E...
1: tune you 6th/bass string to D aka Drop D. Then tune your whole guitar as you normally would off that string.
2: now that you are in D standard tune your 6th/bass string like you did before..7th fret on (6) open on (5). You are now drop C.
3: Have fun, go ape shit, piss your parents off.

I know the pain bro! I have Ibanez RG370 with floating bridge and I keep it in standard all the time for that reason. Luckly I have another guitar with a normal steady bridge so I can play song of different tuing on it. It not as good as my Ibanez baby but its alright for a jamm or practice :D

Accoustic and Electric guitars can play the same songs. Itll sound a lot different (this song is played on an electric) But youll more likely than not, be able to tell what the song is on an accoustic. try it out

Look up sounds of c. I’m pretty sure c is down tuning. So your standard tuning is EADGBE. So if you need to tune your low e string to c then you tune it down to the sound of it. It then becomes. CADGBE. Hope this helps, in a way

I'll say it without being a dick! It doesn't sound right playing it on standard tuning because the song IS played in drop C so if it does sound right to you in e it's probably time to drop the guitar, you're tone deaf haha. Jokes aside don't play it on e

You can play the acoustic parts in standard, just play everything two frets lower, and 4 frets lower on the E if you want

use pick at angle...generally around 30 degrees...instead of usual..it helps

tune to drop D which is 6th D 5th G 4th C 3rd F 2nd A 1st D then tune down the low string 6th to C which is the lower octave of the 4th string C

another way to think of it is the whole guitar tuned down two steps then drop the 6th string two more

That's why you invest in more guitars
Outside of getting more guitars to tune different, i would suggest getting a pitch effect pedal (i suggest the EHX Pitch Fork). It wont sound as good as a guitar being downtuned, but it you can still get a good downtuned sound of it.
FFTransgression what I do is just tuning to drop D so it sounds almost the same without changing the whole tuning. I usually play standard tuning songs so I prefer it that way

To everyone breaking their strings:
This has been my personal experience and just wanted to share it and hopefully it can be of help.
I was breaking strings like nothing tuning them back up to standard from Drop B and C and asked a guitar technician why that is and he explained string tension and that guitars are usually set up to perform best in a singular tuning. You can downtune and go back up without breaking but it’ll shorten the lifespan of the strings and your guitars intonation has a possibility of being thrown out of whack.
