    I picked up a 512 GB SanDisk MicroSDXC for $30 on sale, and it's been working for 8. months now as my near-term storage in my SD card slot to keep my internal SSD free of files I don't use often. Nothing I keep there is without a secondary backup, but I've not suffered any losses and it's worked as a fabulous solution for my needs that I've been very happy with.

    Sd cards shouldn’t be used for long term storage. Only for temporary. One day you’re gonna find your data simply disappear. You didn’t discover a cheat code there’s a reason it’s the last thing people use for long term storage

    • @ArthurBrassart
      @ArthurBrassart  4 месяца назад +46

      you know I have been using this card for 2 years. Never had any issues with it. But I always have a time machine backup so in case something happens I have a copy of my data ;) Technically, any drive can fail at any time, so if the data is important, you need to have a second backup somewhere, whether it's an internal SSD or an SD card. Anyway, I found this card a nice solution to boost my storage at a low price without carrying an external SSD.

    It's really dumb that Apple designed it where a regular SD card sticks out like that compared to how everyone else designs it so it clicks in almost flush. And is actually secure as it locks in. Whereas Apple is the cheaper version where you just press it in as far as it will go and it's held in place by friction.

      What disk format are you using for this SD card ? macOS Journaled or APFS?

    • @jamesleonmiller4504
      @jamesleonmiller4504 Год назад +1

      @Arthur Brassart I have used exFat. It seems like a full wipe with all zeros write should help. As initially, I've formatted into apfs encrypted and immediately got disappointed with the speeds. May be that encryption left some signs in memory. I will reply after full format with writing all 0.

    • @jamesleonmiller4504
      @jamesleonmiller4504 Год назад +3

      Ok, it seems like it shows 75MB/s only when the writing process ongoing on cells, that are are set to 0 (I mean memory cells, that are clean). If it overwrites existing data, speed drops down to 25MB/s.
      I hoped that I can store VMs on this card, but such slow write speeds makes it impossible

    Bought a Transcend 1 TB SD card drive about a year ago. Very slow access. Not good for any current files or where speed is required. Even to load the directory takes a 5-7 seconds. Regular hard drives are 1-2 seconds. I was using it to store inactive files. About a month ago, I started getting errors. I can still read from the drive, but can't copy anything new to it. Disappointing.

      storage doesn't need to be so close to the cpu, so you can make it user replaceable. there a benefit in having soldered DDR5 7000mhz+ RAM but no benefit to soldered storage apart from saving space maybe. macos use this storage as storage, I haven't got the IT degree at walmart. apple separated the memory controller from the rest of the NAND, so the "SSD" chips you see are just storage and the information about the data location are elsewhere in the CPU package. this is an intentional apple decision to make things worse for the user alongside soldering storage in the first place.@AlphaF28

    • @rondobrondo
      @rondobrondo 10 месяцев назад

      @AlphaF28 yeh I agree completely with this. I think this thing is a gimmick and obviously overpriced for what it is. It just happens to have become known for 'being sleek', for people who are OCD about that stuff or couldn't think of their own way to make the SD card feel nicer

    I'm sure that SD Card won't last longer, because the manufacturer typically don't show the how much the TBW (TeraBytes Written), and it's because they knew that SD Card has low TBW that they ashamed to put on their website or datasheet.

    • @p4rk5h
      @p4rk5h 4 месяца назад

      That depends on controller quality, and how many random I/O you do. (I would use Samsung or Sandisk variant of that if it is available, since their controllers are most likely to last longer. e.g. "High-endurance" SD cards or SD cards for "Dashcams")
      If you are just copying photos/videos time to time, (i.e. storage used rarely) this might be ok.
