Thank you for explaining us step by step. You're a good guy but don't put yourself down a lot. You're smart and very helpful. Thank you for taking your time and explaining us right on. Keep on wrenching brother
thanks!
When you are installing the seal, the proper procedure to install it while driving it in is to do it dry without gear lube as it will not sit properly. I guarantee it will start leaking again. I have done a ton of these on 3/4 and 1 tons. You want the area above the bearing where the seal is installed to be dry. Clean the area with brake or carb cleaner before driving it in or the heat from the bearings expanding will cause it to leak again. Just a helpful heads up. Thank you so much for sharing with others Mike.
Thanks for that. I did the other side axle dry because i was told this by someone else. Neither one is leaking again, yet.
Still five year ago but now days 2021 you help me a lot whit this video just working on one right know 👍🏻💪🏻🙏
Just did this on my 2000 k3500. I used wood to get the new seal In place. Never done a job like this before, but it wasn’t too bad! Cleaned up the drum brakes too.
I love buying tools
I love buying camping gear
I enjoy these videos with beer
Great video
That’s what happens when you retire you and your buddies can sit around drink beer and talk about the meds were taken hahaha lol
Much appreciated to you for posting this!
Appreciate you Disgruntled Mechanic. Keep up the good work.
I have an 05 Silverado with 65k.
Watching your videos for when
My time comes. I was the big 70 on last December. Keep on keeping on friend.
Thank you. I try to do my best!
We are a dying breed. Good job my man.
Thanks! I feel half dead a lot of times! HA!
great video, I'm doing mine on my 07 2500hd. glad I watched this, very helpful.
Thank you. According to some commenters it is recommended to put the seal in dry when you put it in hub the rather then lube it like I did. good luck with your repair.
I've heard that as well, but I'm glad I skim read the comments. going to set out to find the nut. a friend mentioned that Napa carries them.
I'm a retired or just tired mechanic, I found if u used the right combination of swear words, as u do your thing the job goes together better, I have a 14 bolt rear end, mine doesn't have a key or an ring, mine has the tabbed washer instead. And yes I had to buy a 6 pin socket to tighten the adjuster and lock nut, at Autozone $21.00.
Nice Video. Thanks.
Thank you! And yes it does seem those swear words do help somehow!
William, Do you know if the seal surface that mates to the spindle needs to be lubed?
Thanks for your informations. I did figured out a way to remove the rings off the axle. Your helped was great! I will ask you more if other problems come up.
no problem.
I got to your channel from Eric Os, Just something to check if you haven't already. When the pinion seal and wheel seal are both leaking,I would remove the vent hose and the vent filter and blow it out with compressed air, also where the fitting goes into the big 11.5 rear axle on the Duramax /8.1 and 1 tons, rust and crap build up and plug the vent hole, this pressurizes the rear axle when towing or running hard causes it to heat up,and blow the weakest seals out. sometimes they've been plugged so solid I've had to run a drill bit down and clean them out. I maintain a fleet of chevy/GMC pickups at work and a few of our 1 tons that are over 10 yrs have had the vent plug up ,I now check them as part of the pm every few oil changes,it's easier than replacing blown seals.
Thank You. I did check that before I replaced the seals. I didn't want brand new seals leaking in a short period of time. Now I know who I can ask about my truck problems since you have a fleet of them!
Thanks for this video, I just did mine and this helped. I rented the 6pt socket for the axle nut. I'll probably just keep it
Thank you for your message! Notes like yours make it worth doing the videos!
GREAT video. Keep em coming.
You have save me thousands.
Thank you!
I'm going to be doing my 2003 2500 HD axle seals this week, I really enjoys your video. I'll be checking out your Library of videos later tonight. 😊
I hope this video helps you! thank you.
just want you safe brother. love your videos. keep up the great work.
Thanks but the truck is on a lift so I felt pretty safe.
use a small floor jack to lift on the power handle
Mike great video! I really enjoyed the improvised tooling you used. I have a seal to do on my truck and wasn't sure how to go about it. Your video helped me a great deal. Thanks a bunch
Well I will be posting the video in the near future of replacing the pinion seal. Thanks for watching and subscribing!
Your scaring me man. That much torque with jack stands can be a little sketchy. Good thing went for the impact!
Thanks for concern but it is on a lift but lift will only go so high.
Good morning Mike. I'm glad you did this video. If my one ton dually develops a leak I'll know what I'm getting into. I think they'd be the same? I better order that tool! You do what you have to, like you said, the nut should be fine. Love the Snap-on torque wrench! I noticed on my truck the harmonic balancer is a low torque then finish the torque in degrees. I guess I need another tool. :)
+wyattoneable That was actually easy compared to what I am running into with the pinion seal! Even more tools! maybe I should have taken it to the dealer to do the pinion seal? Nahhhhh! $400 in new tools I will have it fixed I hope.
+wyattoneable As far as yours being the same, I would think but being a dually not sure. Mine is the 10.5 rear. Be sure to do your homework! Check your private message in a few minutes.
+The Disgruntled Mechanic I'll be sure to do some more research and checking PM soon, thanks.
+The Disgruntled Mechanic $400 in new tools + $15 seal + do it yourself + no less than 6 bottles of IPA is still less than what the dealership would charge haha
Watch as Mike the Disgruntled Mechanic bench presses a Chevy! Wow, that caliper was on there good!
Great video, Mike!
+Adrian Kingsley-Hughes Thank you!
Very nice video and that's a nice torque wrench that you've got there. Looking forward to your review of your new toy. Take care Mike and looking forward to your pinion seal replacement vid.
+stuzman52 yeah that is turning out to be an interesting story in itself but it will eventually be posted!
Very Helpful Thank you 👍
TY!
Thanls for your video brother! I have a 2000 2500 and need to replace two wheel studs. And you even videoed the side I gotta do. Now I know what to expect. Never owned a 2500 before. Now im also thinking about changing the lube oil and adjusting the backlash on the diff carrier. Know anything about that?
Disgruntled Mike- In my Haynes Repair Manual it refers to "Screaming like a Banshee " and "Tighter then a Bull's ass at fly time " I think you got them mixed up. I could have heard wrong, I'll have to re-watch the vid. and double check Haynes. HeHeHe Your a fun guy, thanks.
+Douglas Laramie Well I do get mixed up at times. I was using Chiltons so that may be the mix up!! Thanks for watching!
if you put the seal on the hub and use a flat piece of metal you can tap the seal in place
yep that works too! thanks for watching
Snap- on digital torque angle and beam wrench , like what's really going on LOL. Probably a grand up here, if I get one I'm getting it autographed by Eric :). Nice vid Buddy I know for sure that would be at least a six beer job for me. My 2500hd has never worked as hard as your truck and the seals don't leak, I think :) but we both work the same and I can understand your vids , banshee tight LOL, Look forward to the pinion seal vid. 👍👍
+STEVE ROB see reply to wyatt below!
+STEVE ROB "we both work the same" is that bad or good???? Haha!
+The Disgruntled Mechanic Yeah as far as I know Steve is retired from GM unless I missed something haha.
I have to replace the backing plates on mine, and the e-brake shoes. I assume I have to follow this entire process to do that right? The axle seals need to be replaced if you remove the hub? And how exactly does the backing plate come off? Thanks for the excellent video
LOl.....I'm the same way, DM. I almost bought a 1/4 inch torque wrench and fuel pressure tester that I'd already bought ! Lol...
Exactly!
That's some funny shit there!! Looks just like it goes for me. And.... always buying new tools!
Well...thanks for the video...gonna be doing my 2004 2500 HD this week. Both sides. Only problem I see is that when your camera ran out of power, that's probably exactly when I would need to know what else to do. My life.... I assume you were able to get the hub started and then used the special nut to tighten it in there?????
Sorry thought I explained that. I put the hub on and then pounded it a bit with a block of wood and hammer then tightend the nut up until it got tight and then hammered some more on the hub, kept alternating between doing that until the hub was all the way on hope that helps.
Hello Mike! I struggled for days trying to figure out why I could not put my hub back on axle until I saw your video on how to replace rear seal. When you removed the hub, part of the rings from the seal were still on the axle. I did not notice this but it helped me. I also noticed you used special tool called the slide hammer to remove seal ring. I went to rent that tool and noticed the fitting will not go thru or behind the seal ring. I pulled one piece of ring off but the other piece is still in and could not use slide hammer. What other tool is best to use?
This video is big help. I really like your snap on torque wrench, and appreciated.
Jeady
Thanks for watching. Some mechanics will use a grinder and split the seal so you can get a punch in the slit and pry the seal off. Just make sure you don't cut into the hub doing this. Others will just try to get a pry under the lip of the seal and work it off. Best of luck.
Pry bar simply get good leverage
Drinking beer working on the truck 👍👍
Hey Brother Man…… is this truck on a lift? I couldn’t see if there was a Jack under the differential. I started freakin’ out when the truck was rocking pretty badly when you were fighting the caliper bracket bolt and gave the appearance of no safety Jack stands……OMG!!!
Yes on a lift. Thanks for your concern!
I use my brakes bar and my floor jack it bakes easy
You must not live where rust is the norm!
The Disgruntled Mechanic no Arkansas not much rust but I’m getting old can’t beak the bolts like I use too
Thanks for the infotainment buddy going to be very helpful when I replace mine on both sides this week .. any recommendations for parts store
Can you add where you purchased them ?
Thanks
Good videos, I just have one complaint. Your American Flag in the background is hung backwards. The Field (blue area) Is always top left from a public view. Other than that keep putting the videos out, they are great.
+Andy Kiser I have said to other comments it is a decrative flag. When hung the "proper" way the motorcycle is backwards. So it is not an actual American flag. Hope that helps and also I have since hung it a different way.
@@TheDisgruntledMechanic your a proud American!!! Amen!!
@@rokitman5753 I really try to be!!
Where can I find the socket for the axle nut? Great video, helped allot
I bought it from Amazon. look for 6 lug axle socket for GM 3/4 ton.
How many revolutions was it
do not use lube when installing the races people! and also seals dont use lube .
Is the hub suppose to sit flush with the emergency brakes plate?
what else can be used to get that little key out its become quite the pain
well I have used needle nose pliers or a magnet and it has always came out. Hemostats would also do it. Not sure what else would work if that doesn't do it.
Get a HF Pittsburgh Pro 25" breaker bar !
Could do that too!
But the 3/4" impact worked real well !
Thanks for the video! 👍 No Scotty Kilmer Arrrhh and it's out,no struggle! LOL!
LOL Bro it looks like you have that truck hanging from the rafters on a bungee cord....8:45...That thing bouncing like a basketball.
Can you add that tool for the hub lock nut on your amazon store?
Thanks for asking. I have added it----www.amazon.com/dp/B0015UWW64/?ref=idea_lv_dp_ov_d&tag=onamzmich0b6b-20&linkCode=ic6&ascsubtag=amzn1.ideas.1ZY70SEM90U12
Will purchase through your link. Thank you and keep the great videos coming.
Thank you!
Your flag is hung incorrectly. Nice video though. Very helpful! Thanks for uploading this.
which youtube ad did you steal your music from?
not to sure why you are accusing me of "stealing" music from anywhere but where I got the music from is in the credits and properly credited as the performer required.
Mike what autel scan tool is that sitting in ur box. I LITER ALLY was just googling for a good scan tool to buy without buying snap on, matco prices before I watched ur video. thanks.
Sorry I thought I replied to this. It was an Autel DS 708. I have since bought a Launch x431 pro that I really like. Eric O. likes his Autel. I think his is an Autel MS906 scanner. Hope this helps.
Can you tell me what all parts you had to buy to do this job?
I saw you put gear lube on the seal before installing the hub. Every other video I saw they put it on dry. What would you think about using silicone seal? Since it's a 2 piece seal and doesn't rotate on that surface, it would lubricate the install then add extra sealant.
mike, where's your shop at?
I really do not have a "shop". I just work on my own equipment in my garage.
👍
wow,,, what balls,,, no jack stands.
the truck is on a lift so I felt pretty safe.
Tighter than a banshee lol
We're did you find the axel socket
I bought one from Amazon but the fit of it leaves a bit to be desired. You actually have to file the teeth down a bit to make it fit in the nut.
Sounds good. I've been having trouble with my axel seal and I think the socket will help the problem
One thumbs down already! must be a good reason.
+The Disgruntled Mechanic you wore a blue shirt instead of yellow haha
Yep probably. Thanks for watching Jon!
Dude wtf...I couldn't believe how you did that job...totally wrong...good luck ...bud
Well dude, for being "totally wrong" I have 15,000 mi after doing this job which includes 75 mph plus speed hauling a camper, and snow plowing with no problems. I am headed over to your channel to see the video that you made on how to do it correctly!
Worked well for me! Thanks for the video! I just made sure there was no play, and the wheel spun freely.
I need tourque specs for the inner nut. Your video didnt help a bit
He said it was 52 ft-lbs in the video.
Thanks but, most of this is wrong.
well 25,000 miles plowing snow and hauling trailer at 70 mph and still working strong with no problems, no leaks. I went to your channel to see how to do it the "correct" way with your video and well as I figured no video on it from you. Love arm chair mechanics! thanks for watching!
