    Hey Will, wanted to drop a tip for you. I am a journeyman maintenance technician and routinely have to take stuck nuts off of machines using the "blue wrench" (lol). When you are trying to do that, you should try heating it from just one spot as much as possible. When you heat the entire nut, that saturated heat will expand the whole nut like you are trying to achieve, but it also saturates the threads and will cause them to expand with the nut which is working against you. If you heat just one area, it expands the hole all over and saturates less of the threading with heat soak making it worlds easier to get nuts off. I spent many an hour doing exactly what you did until a senior technician showed me this trick, and now the "blue wrench" has never been a more effective tool in my arsenal. Great work man, keep it up!

    I would like to recommend using a lavalier microphone, even one that plugs into your phone. It will be the cheapest and shortest route to good audio and will reduce the impact of the echo from the workshop on your voice. Keep up the work, man, I can't wait to see the growth and development of your channel.

    • @flyingwondercat739
      @flyingwondercat739 3 года назад +13

      I second this, Will! Love seeing your content; to make it even better a different audio setup is key! You can record voiceovers with the same clip-on mic and room audio the same way as before. There are good clip-on mics for relatively cheap, at least to hold you over for a while.
      The doggo cam was fun :)
      Also, I can tell the audio is normalized a lot better now! It's a big improvement. One trick is to apply a low-pass filter on the voiceovers to remove a bit of treble/hiss. Normalizing/compression can accentuate the hiss of some microphones. You can choose the cutoff frequency to taste.

Never let that spark get blown out and if you do, may you remember that the dedication and determination you wielded is a sword handle right in front of you. All you need to do is but to grasp it. • @junkname9983
      @junkname9983 3 года назад

      yeah, but how quickly do you think that crud will come back with heavy use? So much of this episode is just temporary cosmetic enhancement that won't last, and it really doesn't really effect the function of the thing. The reason why you'd want to take it apart and put it back together is to inspect it and make sure everything is still in good shape but he really didn't have to spend all that time to make it pretty.

    • @Anino_Makata
      @Anino_Makata 3 года назад +1

      @@junkname9983 That much crud would take a long time to reacumulate with use, since you're expected to maintain it if you're using the machine. It's actually more likely to develop rust and gunk in it's joints when it's not being used.
      Plus, machines like this are generally as solid as they come. So this Beaudry could still run for another 100 if taken care of properly. And the cleaning and application of rust converter would prevent pitting and weakening of the casting overtime, so it wasn't just for the looks. Besides, why wouldn't you make your tools pretty?

    • @cybertree
      @cybertree 3 года назад

      @@junkname9983 With heavy machinery it's actually a good idea to remove crud as it can hinder mechanisms, it will eventually creep into a bearing, wear surface or space that requires a clear path, it's why you change the oil in your car, those metal shavings collect and collect and eventually become sandpaper to your pistons. Plus there's pride in your equipment, I don't have to clean my car ever, but I do often. And I do it so often people I know have attributed a neatness quality to me, nothing worse than picking up a date in a crackhead mobile because "cleaning is pointless".

    Since watching you and Alec and other similar channels it amazes me how many machines and processes that are used today, and that most of us think of as 'modern' come from so far back in time... like I have no idea what I thought folks in the early 1900's or later were using, but for some reason I always thought the stuff you guys use was way more recent than that. That aside, nice to know that those old machines you managed to pick up are still good to go ( which is amazing in itself considering how much 'planned obsolescence' is a thing right now ) and being put to good use

    Will, so good to see you posting new vids again; I truly have missed watching you work your magic.
    And I appreciate you leaving that black finish and patina on all the cast iron pieces that you've cleaned and refinished, it maintains it's 'character' and doesn't look like some painted up 'cartoon version' of what it's supposed to be like some others have done.
    Looking forward to seeing you put that 'bad boy' to work, it looks like it could really move some steel.....

    My respected young friend (whom I've never met or don't even know) let a older man give you a tip in restoration. To clean off old grit, grime and grease (and as you say "crustyness"), few products works as well as good old fashioned paraffin/kerosene and an old paint brush (tooth brush for small difficult to reach parts/places). Paraffin/Kerosene also helps to loosen old nuts and bolts. Apply in generous amounts, let it soak for about 30min and then reapply and brush of with a soft wire brush. if you really want to, the treads of bolts can be cleaned out with an old toothbrush making it easier to undo. It is normally much cheaper than commercial aerosol products. In very stubborn cases brake fluid can be used but acts as a paint remover as well, so should not be used if you don't intend re-painting. Good luck and keep up the good work. God bless and better luck than the last time.
    P.S. I restored a very old engine back in the mid '80s and stripped it down and soaked everything in an old 54 gal/210 lt oil drum, in which I covered all the parts in paraffin/kerosene, after a few days I simply wiped the grit off and used a high pressure cleaner and degreaser to wash it all crystal clean.

    Two tips:
    When you have a really stuck nut, try heating it up to 220-250 degrees--barely enough to make a wet finger sizzle-- then hit it with the penetrating oil, and walk away for an hour. As the metal cools, capillarity pulls the penetrant deeper inside than just soaking it would.
    Second, buy some big slugging wrenches from McMaster. They're designed to get mollywhopped with a sledge, and the impact breaks torque faster than mere strain could ever give you.
