I think there will always be buyers no matter the size
I’ve been buying 1/4 oz gold for a few years. Easier to unload or use as trade vs the larger sizes. Premiums are an issue, but I’m willing to deal with that currently.

The Britannia security features are incredible. As an American, Britannias are one of my staples due to these features. I don't buy eagles or Buffaloes. It makes no sense when these have a much lower premium and are a superior coin. I stick to 1/4 and 1/2 ounce for gold coins. It's tough to save up for a full ounce.
I love buffalo , don't own any though , do keep promising myself one for my collection ( not my stack)

I agree in principal but personally I would rather have 1 full oz Britannia than 4 quarters. Personal choice of course but I buy for the long term so ease of conversion is not important.

As a new stacker, i jist purchased my first one ounce gold coin and its a Britannia. Such a beautiful coin. Ive got 1/4 ounce and 1/10 ounce gold eagles but this britannia is such a beauty.

Yep, nailed it. 1/4s are just more flexible to trade. How they fit all that detail in a smaller 1/10 coin is a work of art.
The sovereign design in comparison looks super simple. Got a lot more confidence with a Britannia. They nailed everything about those coins.
I bet folks back in 2000 when gold was £275/oz were asking "who's going to buy gold at £500 or £1000?". People get used to prices. Combination of inflation and general salary increases over time.
Also, I've never understood why Britannia bullion strikes are super high quality but bullion sovereigns look "soft" and lack definition.

I think there was a point in the 1990s where you could buy 1 ounce gold for around £200. Can we go back to those days?
I have the same thought as you. If in 10 or 20 years the price of gold increases a lot, it will be much more difficult to sell large coins. This is also why I remain focused on 20 francs, sovereigns, half sovereigns, etc.
With gold at around $1920 per oz. I can understand buyers going for quarters, but bigger investors wont pay the higher premium.

1/4 ounce coins just don’t do it for me. I want to experience the artwork and beauty of the designs. The 1 ounce coins show every detail so much better than the smaller coins.
I can imagine there will always be a market for 1 ounce Coins. I’ve always loved the design of the completer coin. I’m gutted I never bought more when the premiums weren’t that much more than Brits. The Gold completer is my favorite.
The completer is awesome. Absolutely gorgeous. But so is Philharmonic , 4 Ducats , and Buffalo !

I recently locked in my first gold britannia and it was indeed a quarter oz. The moment I got it in my hand I was convinced this is now my preferred stacker. It was right before the last price increase and the same coin now costs me about £35/43$ more at the same retailer. That almost covers the premium. Although I have sinced discovered I can buy them directly from the royal mint with free shipping to my country so I'll try that next time. One thing I've realized while stacking old world gold coins is that huge gold coins are very rare. The biggest coins for a lot of people were around the 1/4 oz we use today. So perhaps what is happening, is that we are moving towards a more real gold standard. Where a small gold coin will be worth a small fortune. Also, the difference in premium between the half oz and quarter oz is so small, that it really makes sense to go with the smaller denominations and rather have more. The britannia gold coin is so great because it means you can sell the coin directly in a trade, because the person doesn't need knowledge of gold coins to learn it's value.
I really like the Britannia security features. I wish the US Mint did more for the American Eagles than a missing reed. I just don't understand that. No real effort in my opinion.

One thing to consider , is that 95% of the world population have 0 gold holdings and are clueless. Many are very wealthy and will pay the price as it rises because of FOMO . Metal supplies will deplete very quickly.
Copper is usually the most used metal for coins if cash failed or drugs
My biggest coins are half ounces. I'm not necessarily comfortable with locking in that much cash into one coin, and I can usually find quarter and half ounces for a very reasonable premium over spot.
I stay far away from 1/10 and smaller though, the smallest coins i buy these days are 20 francs (0.1867 ozt AGW)
I'm back after 8 months, how things change.
1oz gold at possible £3000 by the end of 2024, would make a 4oz britannia £800.
If anyone thinks £800 for a coin not much bigger than a 20p is expensive, then they still have some faith in the fiat currency.
Those of us that took advantage of cheap gold will probably have fractional gold and sovereigns anyway.

1oz gold coins are too expensive for me. It is a lot of money to hold in one coin. I have considered getting a 1/4oz gold coin but I would only buy one if it was a special design that might hold value as a collectible. The sovereign is much better value in most cases.
I would shy away from that path. Instead I’d focus on silver
I do prefer 1/2 oz gold. I agree premiums on 1/4 oz are too high.

I doubt they will stop selling them, as the royal mint sells 1kg bars. I doubt the 1oz will lose its status as joint favourite uk coin either. I currently have a mix of sovereign and 1oz gold Britannia coins for stacking but collect sovereigns and 1/4oz gold coins. Just like uk government hates silver stackers and tax it , several countries tax 22ct gold .

I just buy the coins I can afford. The Soveriegn is my choice as its within my budget, although I prefer the appearance an colour of the gold Brittainia, the Soveriegn is a bit coppery in colour.
Personally, I have shifted from 1oz to 1/4's and Sovereigns. Though their is a premium I am happy to pay that rather a £120+ on a new 1oz coin. Times are tough for us stackers with the general cost of living, but feel that dealers, (particularly the larger UK on-line/retailer shop front ones) you know who you are, are not incentivising me to part with my hard earned at the moment. I think this is a bit short sighted, however I don't have pay their bills and no doubt their running costs have gone up significantly in the last 2 years.

Thank you for another interesting video... I have yet to get a Britannia in gold, though I do have in silver, the coins and the beautiful Britannia 10 ounce bars. I think I will try to get a quarter ounce gold Britannia for my collection, but in the past couple of years my income has been pretty low.
I get your point with the security feature but aesthetically i do like the britannia with the oriental boarder i think the should bring it back and combine the two
I LOVE gold Sovereigns, and try to buy 1 a month. I did get a 2024 1/4 gold Britannia and it’s beautiful. I refuse to buy American coins cause they are so expensive and you won’t get your money back if/when you go to sell.
I have been hearing a lot about milk spotting on the silver Britannia’s and that it’s mint problem
In my area of Florida, pre-owned metals are sold at 8% over spot no matter if it's sovereign, govt minted, raw bullion or whatever. Gold or silver, it doesn't matter.
I think bullion gold will become the preserve of extraordinary people, and central banks.
I Hope to buy a 1oz next year, I got a quarter oz this year and is foundation to my stack.

I do like the ¼ ounces but I do like a sovereign too but the premium one the ¼'s is a bit steep note why I don't have any yet, to anyone who cares the ¼'s are all gone already 😒

I just got my first gold coin a few weeks back. A 2024 1/4 oz Britannia. The reason I got a Britannia instead of my own countries American Gold Eagle, is because of the security features of the Britannia and that it was about $100 cheaper as well. Win win?
Maybe they will make a half oz , very underrated size, Half oz Gold Maples are hard to get and they go fast.

I have no idea what to buy sovereign/britania? First time buyer NO CLUE ABOUT ANYTHING. Reason just to have something to invest in due to the government wanting to go towards digital money. Sadly unable to afford the expensive ones just wish to jump in a little.

I don't think so. A 1oz will always be cheaper than two half ounces. The only way there would be less 1oz coins, is if gold ever becomes currency, again.
How much (presumably) over spot, would you sell Britannia's, these days ?
Gold ones, 1 oz for 1.5% over spot and these 1/4 oz went for 2% over spot today

Not always, just have to be resourcesful and search better. Most of my 1/4 oz were bought less than 3% over, half ounces i can buy regularly for the same premium as a full oz

Goldbacks are the only transactionable gold. You can trade directly cause it is small enough.
Silver Britannias have another security feature. Milk spots 😝
Premiums too high for fractional gold. Gold oounces are for larger purchases. Use silver for smaller purchases. Gold is for cars, houses, large debt pay-off when appropriate. I have fractional gold, probably 10% of my stack by weight. I plan on using them for gold trade or to preserve my silver if needed. I am of the SHTF but not Zombie apocalypse camp.
Your Gold Britannia is dated 2023 but features QEII even though she died in 2022. In my view the Royal Mint was wrong to release these. What do you think of this.
