What's the point of Economic debate when politicians and their economic advisors have no "insider" experience of how to actually create and run a successful business? Away from the Labour led jobs in Government, NHS & Educations, there's a different world of people who are self motivated and strive to create, run a business employing people, Labours left wing attitude can not comprehend this thinking. As smart as Gary is with his "School of Economics" in the real world of real responsibilities of running a business and employing staff, its a different matter, so the next time a debate for "Distributing wealth" is made, how about asking the common person to "Skill Up" because nothing in this world is free, especially a high paying salary! And dont ever expected any company to pay someone with no skills £15 per hour, as all your doing is increasing prices of products such as groceries and fuel and then nobody's better off... Look no further then when you next do your weekly shop!
@EmmaJonesSmith91 Did you not follow this? They are talking about a WEALTH tax for > 100M. I agree about up skilling but tbh that's not the point here.
I'd pay good money to watch Liam, Gary and Richard Murphy not only discuss the problems, but come up with some concrete steps that can be implemented to win people over
@@FONASDeadlock Couldn't agree more! Gary's lived experience, Liam's political nouse, and Richard's deep analysis could really move things forward. I'd add George Monbiot to the party as well for his sheer passion.
Great to see you with Gary. Even greater if you could use some influence on the Labour government to get them to take Wealth Inequality seriously and change their tax policies.

@ People don’t understand how the wealthy and super-wealthy operate. The wealth comes from assets, and the assets are in real estate, such as residential, industrial, and retail properties. Also, resources like land, energy and natural resources. Those assets and resources are in the UK, and physical properties are in the UK. Many people think that the wealthy and super are like Scrooge McDuck swimming in their bank accounts, but in fact, are like Roman Abramovich, whose Chelsea football club could not be picked up and moved when he was told to sell with the Russian sanction. So they can leave, but their wealth is their asset and resource in the UK. So yes, tax them.
@@fanfeck2844 Most of them won't leave. This fear-mongering is part of the propaganda. Switzerland and Norway have imposed a tax on wealth and there was no significant capital flight in those countries.
@ their wealth doesn’t have to be in the U.K, so yes, you can perhaps tax them once. Perhaps when the rich leave the country, you’ll be next in line to lose your assets to the greedy state.

Liam a top video. What does not help is that the tax and welfare system work to keep people poor. Without checking, if an individual has more than £ 6 thousand in saveings then they are seen as no longer poor. £6k does not do that much these days. People need to cover the risk of not haveing a job after the next pay packet. Or if they take a promotion at work the increase in wages after their welfare is adjusted could leave them worse off
Sadly poor audio. However interesting. I think a few others involved would be good. The practical end of economic development and inequality, via Sir Paul Collier.

We need a new and growing political movement to bring about change. The current political system and ALL the current established political parties is/are defunct and dead ( Conservative/Labour/Lib Dem/Reform/SNP/Green/Welsh Nationalists ). Equally if we dont abandon Capitalism as our cultural/economic/political model then the three great problems the human race and our planet faces ( Poverty and inequality/destruction of habitats, climate change and the extinction of other species/Population control) will never be resolved.
The all left wing parties stealing wealth from private sector?? what the goal of socialism that end in commuhism hell no land ownership ... which is ownering a home or business
Liam 10 years too long to get cash to the poorest. A Reform govt will win if this Labour govt don’t increase benefits, get privitisation out of the nhs, and increase wages.
Take away the accents and these guys definitely could be talking about Australia. Growing wealth divide even though the country is making money. Poor me billionaires controlling the media. Resources walking out the country for less than a pittance. Housing crisis blamed on the nearest scapegoat . Politicians maintaining the status quo, ready to retire to their lucrative board positions. At least the weather is good.
Wealth inequality can be a good thing. It is different from the personality of any given person or illegally gaining that inequality. I noticed how many politicians of any party can gain from office or after leaving. Wealth can be used for bad or for benefits, cultural , buildings, libraries, etc etc. The issue is not inequality, which will always exist, it is the inability of many people to be paid adequately. There are many reasons for this and the state of the job market at any point in time and how someone is qualified or skilled for jobs available. The world didn't advance in medicine, technology, science by itself.... That is why there are many Foundations etc, based on someone's wealth.
I think your conflating income with wealth. They are two distinct things. In one is an inward cash flow. Wealth is assets that can produce income by increasing in value and being traded, or lent out. When we talk about income inequality, we are talking about people who are low paid. These are the assetless poor, and the asset- and income limited employees (ALICEs) ,who rely on benefits, or wages for their livelihood. The ALICEs may only have some savings and a pension, or even a house, and possibly some shares, but if they lost their wages, they cannot survive. So inequality covers two dimensions of income and wealth. And that's why our economy is stagnant, as the asset-wealthy don't spend enough to grow the economy. The asset less and the Asset and Income limited spend a higher proportion of their income back into the economy, than those living on returns from assets. So redistribution of income and wealth is needed to address inequality. Buying assets doesn't grow the economy in any other way than statistically. The financialization of our economy has created an economy overburdened with debt, and who own that debt? The asset wealthy.

Brexit cost us 5% of our GDP, how's that deregulation and stagnant economy working for you? We still trade with plenty of people who have regulations, which means we have to meet theirs so a lack of regulation doesn't mean much. Who cares if Gary doesn't know how to run a small business or not? That's not what he's an expert at, he's a bloody good economist who has used his knowledge of inequality to make a lot of money. The stuff he is talking about would reduce costs for businesses. If fewer assets were owned by the rich they could be owned by ordinary people more easily including small businesses. Maybe listen to what he says and think about the consequences of it.
Interesting statement from Liam Byrne when he said the Labour government is conflicted. Taking away pensioners winter fuel payment and looking for cuts in Welfare from the disabled to look tough on economic spending, is showing no confliction, its giving into the right wing media. Like when Keir Starmer said to the editor of the Sun newspaper we will not shy away from making cuts in Welfare.
