Our country is in deep, deep trouble. The richest are getting richer, while the poorest face hardship unknown for years. Here on these ‘isles of wonder’, the cradle of the industrial revolution and home to the Mother of Parliaments, freedom, security and hope are now in short supply.
We can't go like this.
In Westminster, you’ll find plenty of people who think the way forward is the politics of divide and rule, and a few more culture wars.
I don’t think that’s right.
So this site is dedicated to finding ideas that rekindle the common good by reconnecting economic growth and social justice. Ideas that good people don’t just ‘like’, but might actually vote for.

The Inequality of Wealth with Gary Stevenson
Let me see if I can enhance the audio on this this week - but a few people asked me about teaming up with the great Gary Stevenson! In fact, we've been collaborating on bits and pieces for a while - so I thought I'd share this sit down we did together to launch the paperback of the Inequality of Wealth with me and Gary, chaired by the great Rosa Prince. You can get the here: www.theinequalityofwealth.co.uk
Here's the blurb:
The super-rich have never had it so good. But millions of us can’t afford a home, an education or a pension. And unless we change course soon, the future will be even worse. Much worse. But things don’t have to be like this.

What causes the inequality of wealth? Four causes are key
Просмотров 11 тыс.2 часа назад
The family you're born into - and the things you inherit - are increasingly important in explaining your wealth in life. But in this second video sharing ideas in my book, The Inequality of Wealth www.inequalityofwealth.co.uk - I lay out the four key problems in our politics and economy that cause wealth inequality to grow. When we put together the story of privilege, technopoly - the new monop...
Evri: "A Slave Driver's Contract?"

A fair day's pay for a fair days work is an ancient principle. But it's being washed away by an epidemic of zero hours contacts and so-called self-employment where employers get away with all sorts. One example is the courier firm Evri, about which we've had a tonne of complaints. So we called them in, for what turned out to be an extraordinary cross-examination. The McDonalds 'Sex for Shifts' Scandal

McDonalds employs over 200,000 people. But are young workers safe? We've heard alarming evidence of abuse that suggest the widespread use of Zero Hours Contracts is creating an unhealthy imbalance of power that allows abuse to flourish. We called the Chief Executive of McDonalds to Parliament to answer. Here's my report. Subscribe for news from Liam Byrne MP ► ruclips.net/channel/UCGTc043Wp5uGX...
Should Rachel Reeves go to China? I say yes
Просмотров 73819 часов назад
There’s a debate about whether the Chancellor should be in China. I say ‘yes’ for three reasons. First, there’s some big points we have to make - about human rights, Hong Kong, Jimmy Lai and the need for peace and stability in the Taiwan Straight (which is a global public good). These points are best made in person. Second, we’re going to need to align our economic security regime closer with o...
The gap between the super-rich rich & the rest of us is now HUGE: this is why you should care
Просмотров 22 тыс.19 часов назад
The gap between rich and poor is huge - and growing. In fact, since 2010, the top 1% have multiplied their wealth by 41 TIMES more than everyone else. That's a moral problem, an economic problem, and a political problem. But why should you care? In this first video from my new book, I explain why this matters to all of us. You can order the book from www.inequalityofwealth.co.uk Let me know wha...

Let the rich get rich BUT they must pay their taxes in full. No off shore Tax havens. Tax havens closed. Off shore unpaid tax must be paid with compound interest. If off shore tax havens investments are fully reivested in the UK then compound interest charges are void.

Inequalities of wealth are much less important that inequalities of consumption. Inequalities of consumption are also much less than of wealth. To have a better, fairer society, what we really want is to discourage excessive, luxurious, wasteful consumption and pollution. Beyond that, citizens at all levels of income and wealth can contribute to a great economy. Good economic citizens occur at all levels of income and wealth.
Painfully difficult to listen to. Please run the audio through a sophisticated filter and loose the background noise. Otherwise some interesting stuff that I am familiar with from both you and Gary.
Same with Amazon and I’m sure with many other businesses… The leadership has no clue what the heck is going on at the customer interaction level… they rely on flawed data and reasoning. Good people don’t leave jobs, they leave lousy management.
Great content , terrible audio. Please Gary, stop putting your hand before your mouth when talking - and remember in which 13:06 direction the microphone is.
More pls, Mr Byrne, that was a very informative video, thank you. It's a pity I can't be shown on main stream T.V.
One constraint that is being ignored is that significant economic growth in the developed world cannot be part of the solution to tackling inequality because of the need to keep our environment habitable. We need to change rather than grow our enconomy and distribute the spoils more fairly. For example, our economy needs to produce quality products that have long service lives and are repairable.
Every time I see evri is delivering my package i inhale deeply and sigh, ready to receive a picture of a random recycling box somehwere hopefully in my town lol
sorry you as a boss dont work hard in your offices and why do I get a hint your avoiding giving proper answer to these questions. Go out and actually deliver these parcel to see why workers lives are so shit, and yet your company insists your business is a great place. Really. This sadly reminds me of amazon documentary I seen before and yet these company makes millions for the boss and act as if there's noting wrong
Wealth inequality - the prime minister is a multi millionaire, and has received tens of thousands in gifts from rich people, as have other Labour MP's.
I genuinely dont think the labour larty is the place for progressive people and progressive talk any more. Historically it has been the case and i can see why progressives align themselves with labour considering their traditional values....that and the fact theres only two parties with a chance of being in government. But not now. I see labour as just another cheek of the neoliberal arse, out of which, spews the shit that successive governments for the past 4 decades have subscribed to. A new party needs to come to the fore. And the right wing propaganda machine that is tabloid press absolutely needs tackled.
You do not mention that it is individuals who are on low incomes through their own lack of basic skills, and motivation to do something about this. Minimum wage wil be £12.25 so in a year the earnings should be circa £20,000 plus added benefits minus tax. It is then up to the individual to decide how and what they spend thier money and most spend it unwisely and that is the crux of the problem in the UK. You do not mention this aspect at all.
Immigration, immigration has kept the wage bill low and results in companies not wanting to train new employees.
Bring back clause 4.
Why hasn’t this got more views , everyone wonders why people are getting more and more depressed and de motivated because we are all literally fighting each other for the crumbs of the elite
Wow not one word of truth fell out of his mouth. He even laughed at the end when asked if the workers have rights because he knows they don't but won't admit it.
The Evri manager stated that their 6 monthly employee happiness survey showed up none of the issues that the committee were highlighting. Maybe that's because the couriers and other employees fear that, by telling Evri the truth, they are putting their own jobs at risk.
Where is wealth created in the first place? Socialists have pointed out for decades that workers [in offices, factories, warehouses or wherever] create far more value in the workplace than the value of their wages. The difference is "surplus value" - from where profits for shareholders, along with executive bonuses, derive. In the extreme market-driven regime known as neoliberalism this exploitation has increased considerably, with the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer. My guess is that Liam Byrne believes that a Keynesian approach will redress the imbalance, and maybe he is right - but Keynesian economics have been tried before - and others believe that radical socialist solutions are the only way forward.
The singular cause of all social ills, including so-called inequality, is adulthood, inequality presenting no more than a symptom. Additionally, you talk about "wealth" without offering any meaningful definition. Let's take a brief look at what "adulthood" is from a natural developmental perspective. It is, in the simplest terms, the sole mental illness on the planet, all else, again, presenting as no more than symptoms. One may scoff at this critically important insight, however, the extent to which this mental illness will form the basis of mankind's judgment at "Singularity., which can arrive at any day now. How do I know this, and how am I able to be certain about such an assertion? Because I have authored over five million words on the topic, in my own right, and a further three million words derived from "consultation" with AI (which remains ongoing) over the past seven months.
This is so distressing I don't know where to begin. Corporations don't need to care about us, obviously, but who is protecting us from their exploitation. Our institutions have abandoned us. We can't look to Government any more as parliament is deferential to the interests of the rich - the tax system and employment laws favour the rich and disempower the working class. The banks and banking system have reached an ascendency of power and influence that should never have been allowed to happen - our old system of working and saving has been transformed to living off credit, making us all slaves to the bankers. The Unions are a shadow of their former power and sadly the working class are split by faction building and petty disputes over ideology. And what of Democracy? - us the people voting for corrupt politicians and falling for the lying rhetoric of Brexit to make out lives even worse. I have no strategy only tactics. Learn marketable skills - money makes you safe. Own your own property if you can. Avoid the gig economy and be salaried if you can. Save if you can. Avoid credit wherever possible. Try to buy local. Avoid the trap of consumerism. Buy second hand and upcycle - there's so much stuff out there. Also, remember your worth as nobody else will.
The people vote the ultra-rich into office. UK people knew who Boris was and they voted him in. You cry about the super-rich yet you revered QEII for entire life!!!! The hypocrisy is deafening.
It’s time to let the Health & Safety Executive and Trade Union body go to all EVRI depots without announcing themselves and observe what type of conditions the couriers are working under.
Unfettered Capitalism and the game of Monopoly explains it.
I would love to see both of you talking about this on Question Time.
The only problem with question time is the "balanced" panel that seems to mandate having at least one idiot. I still like it though. 😊
Gen Zee? Gen Zed surely?
Interesting advice from the man who left a note saying "there no money left" After labour had been in power many years.
When Governments buy votes with handouts. We should not be surprised that borrowing and debt are at record levels.
Neoliberalism.
Save yourself £9.99. Wealth inequality is due to the fact that A. People have very different abilities. B The vast majority of "the rich" are older people who have accumulated wealth over a lifetime - and are only "rich" for a comparatively short period of their lives.C. State sector spending, debt and currency debasement affect the less well off disproportionately. Er..that's it. You can learn nothing from these stuck record, Socialist quacks.
Pity there s no money left Liam
Just get house prices, and council tax down to sensible prices, and most of us down here at the bottom will muddle through.
You don't get the hour pay needed each morning whilst waiting scanning and loading
Liam a top video. What does not help is that the tax and welfare system work to keep people poor. Without checking, if an individual has more than £ 6 thousand in saveings then they are seen as no longer poor. £6k does not do that much these days. People need to cover the risk of not haveing a job after the next pay packet. Or if they take a promotion at work the increase in wages after their welfare is adjusted could leave them worse off
I worked for them for less than 2 months 50p for posting a parcel you have to deliver 90 items to make decent money per day just scandalous
Second worst delivery service in England.... obviously royal mail are first...iv lived in third world country for years... before coming back to the UK....and they are ten times better....and no matter how poor they are iv never had any stolen...and they don't have fancy vans...all parcels are delivered on motorcycle and every courier has your phone number to tell you they are coming that day
Unfortunately, the audio quality is inferior and is essentially unlistenable. Politicians need to wake up. If politicians choose to ignore Inequality it will right result in their removal.
I hear many politicians, journalists and commentators describing the problems that we face, but once we have understood the problem and if it’s not going to be war or revolution that turns the problems of wealth and inequality around then it’s going to have to be done through the ballot box. To my mind there is no point in putting our faith in the Conservative, Labour and definitely not Reform parties as they are all variations of the same neo liberal project. To address this problem through the ballot box a new party has to be created so that these ideas can be injected into is the only way forward. Give me something to get behind and vote for and I will vote for it, give me something to march for and I will march for it. I am sure when it all goes down the toilet we will still be talking about the causes without ever taking action, at least we will know how we got there. I have heard the message but where am I going to put my vote !
Anyone can be rich in todays world, it's just a mentality differences between poor and rich!
I've talked to some of these drivers and the hours they put in every day is ridiculous. I for one wouldn't do a couriers job.
What a load of waffle that Amazon speaks and fails to answer the questions .
GMB will be run inline with the company to protect them from employees complaints and pushed under the carpet and treated as a nuisance employee if you speak up same story with factory workers around the country moving the goal post when you reach it or reducing your hrs if your earn money
Great video. How about a discussion with Gary Stephenson.
It seems to me the Tories & their client media have created an anti tax cult in which it's a rude word & a bad thing. They've also handed so much out to their mates that the perceptible link between tax & public services has been broken. Such was the toxicity around taxation before the last election, Kier Starmer knew full well that his party probably wouldn't win an election without promising not to raise headline taxes. So he was tactical & now in a position to at least nudge a bit in a more positive direction. But until the overall public perception of taxation improves massively, not much can change. The conversation has to be reversed, from deciding how much tax we don't want to pay, to deciding what kind of society we want to live in & how we're going to get there. It looks like the relationship to tax is a bit like deciding how much you don't want to spend in Tescos before even going through the door. Unfortunate reality for too many but not the way we generally go about shopping; we decide what we want first & finances second.
I agree with this but where is the response from Labour? This is true for individuals but what about international corporates, and particularly the US? Over the past decade or so the Tories sold the UK down the river to the US and Labour look as though they will continue with that but under Trump the take could be far more aggressive. Do we really want to be a poor vassel state under their control? Elon Musk is already showing signs that this is how we are viewed. Under US control we are not going to see much growth and I suspect the opposite.
We do not need billionaires, tax havens, mega yachts, private jets, mansions, poverty, homelessness, or hopelessness. Greed is why regulated societies need implementable laws and a fair tax system. Wealth is good; greed and selfishness are bad.
I have never worked for Everi, but I have experience of being a customer, it wasn't a good experience!! Try dealing with these as the delivery company and sports direct as the seller, just a nightmare!!
Honest days work, politicians overpaid then
