That was a perfectly clean hit. Potvin will go down as one of the best defensemen to ever play the game. He was great both offensively and defensively which was very rare for a defenseman back then.
Potvin owned the Rangers at the Garden - that cheer jump got him up. Denny talked about a battery flying past his head during the national anthem not long after the Nilsson hit, and he just thought, "it's on." My Ranger pals still cheer this.
Exactly, unfortunately the Garden ice was horrible, and if you watch carefully, Nilsson’s leg gets stuck in a rut. It was a normal hit combined with that. Funny thing is, even if you listen to the former Ranger’s in this clip, some say it was dirty or chippy, others say he hit him from behind, which he clearly didn’t, though hitting from behind back then was legal. The legend of that hit, which wasn’t even a major smashing hit, has muddied some people’s minds. Blame the Garden Ice. If Bossy got injured in the same fashion, say from bad ice and a clean Beck hit, Ranger’s fans would have loved Beck even more.
The problem with Denis Potvin was that he was unbelievably strong/ powerful. His primary school had to put a grill on the school's windows because he kept breaking them with his at bats; no one came anywhere close to doing that. Remember that he started playing for the Ottawa 67"s (major Ontario JR A) when he was only 13 years old and he did well. He hit to hurt but he was not the dirty type like Scott Stevens with his elbows. Although not as flashy as Bobby Orr, he would instill fear in the other players. I went to primary school with him and he excelled at all sports.
It was a ridiculously clean hit if you look you don’t really see how he broke his leg they hit each other face-to-face hip to hip I don’t see what the problem is

Not even close to being a dirty check, but Rangers fans were pissed off at the injury and any excuse to hate their rivals captain and start a derogatory chant, why not, but a perfectly clean hit in my mind. The Rag fans had little to cheer about so the “POTVIN SUCKS” chant still lives in the Garden although none of each team back there are around. Isles fans had the response of “1941”. I love NY sports since my boyhood when it was Brooklyn Dodgers vs NY Giants and NY Yankees. There is similar anger between Yankees and Mets fans today. Curiously, there is little conflict like between NFL Giants and Jets. I root for both.
I think because both playing in New Jersey and none have played together in NY State or NYC since the 1970s and even back then after 1969 both did not exactly have great Teams in the NFL in NYC back in the 1970s before the Giants moved their Home over to New Jersey after 1975. So there was no jealousy hatred rival for both Teams because in the 1970s both Teams had actually sucked. Both became much better after 1970s by that time both Teams played in New Jersey. Neither Team in the 1970s was an NFL threat of taking the NYC Limelight from the Other. With MLB and the NHL it was much different in NYC than with the NFL Teams. There is more of a Rivalry between the Giants and Eagles or the Jets and Bills than there is with the Giants and Jets.

Besides beating the Rangers every year from 80 to 84, my favorite moment was watching Gillies KO Hospadar and the rest of the Rangers just look away!
rob morrison it’s actually 2 Cups in an 83 year span and just 1 cup over the past 77 years. ROTFLMAO. They are the Chicago Cubs of hockey. MSG’s greatest moments are made by opponents!
The Ranger’s “one in a row” was cool for their fans. Four in a row is dynasty. Remember the chant: “1941!” Today, (2018) the Rangers are in bad shape and the Isles are soaring.
I don’t remember a 1941 chant but the Isles fans started a 1940 chant that lasted 20 + years.
Never saw the coward MM elbow Nystrom, Gilles, Stevens, Wilson, O'Reilly, oh thats right, they would wipe the floor with him! Mark the coward liked picking on the European players and anyone under 5ft 2in
Ranger fans are so entitled and snarky. Messier was the dirtiest player ever.
I love when a Ranger gets crippled
I have a potvin sucks shirt
hes probably not caring cause he has 4 rings to polish lol
Ron Duguay... what a loser.
And Islanders picked Bossy in the same draft. Hahahahaha
It’s only a dirty hit with your players are brittle
Anything bad that happened to Ulf was deserved. One of the dirtiest players to ever lace 'em up.
Didn't potvin say he was better than orr after orr won the mvp in canada cup.delusional isn't strong enough to describe potvin.
You must be a Ranger fan. Not taking anything away from the great Bobby Orr, but Denis Potivn is one of the top NHL players to ever play the game.
