True The 80 Battles Between The 2 NY Rivals Was The Best in NYC At The Time Before My Time Since I Was Born in 91 Becoming a Flyers Fan As a Young Kid Around 1995 I Think!
I went to a game in the late 70'/80's and the blue seats dropped down a banner that said "Islanders eat shit." I think they banned banners shortly after that.
It was everything people could have imagined and 100 times more. Many fights at MSG were between the fans in the blue seats and...anyone, even themselves!
I see the Canes play in NY all the time and the fans in blue are great! Great energy there👍🏽 Kudos to the Isles and Rangers fans for keeping it intense and real!
My family is split down the middle for sports. My dad is an islanders, jets, and mets fan. And his twin brother is a Yankees, giants and rangers fan. I mixed them. I like the islanders, Yankees, and I’m a ravens fan for football but trust me, the New York/New York rivalry is something you can’t really beat. Especially in hockey. There’s nothing like it in sports to me. Go isles!
Same with me, my dad grew up a Mets, jets, and islanders fan, but everyone in my moms side likes the Yankees, rangers, and giants, the only thing the find common ground on is the knicks. Jokes on both of em though I tend to root for the Nets
I became an Islander fan (in Manhattan!) during Game 7 against the Leafs in '78. The Rangers-Islanders rivalry was so intense. Nothing like it. Of course, since my team won four Cups in a row I never really hated the Rangers, and would root for them when I was at MSG as long as the Islanders weren't the opponent. The only reason I could survive as an Islander fan in Manhattan was that I was also a Jets, Knicks, and Mets fan.
Great documentary. That 1979 improbable win by the Rangers was really amazing, I think the Islanders needed that defeat to be humble and win 4 straight Stanley Cup after that.
Shindler39 That's it right there pal. Be humble? What did they do to not be humble about? Sure they led the "regular season" in points but had they even won a single playoff series up to that point? If you're old enough to remember, the Rangers were playing better hockey than anyone going into that series and even though it took them six games to eliminate the Isles, the Rangers could have won every game of the series. The Isles were very fortunate to win any games. Better in net, defense and special teams were the Rangers and everyone who watched knows it
John Davidson was unstoppable in the playoffs that year that series broke my heart and yeah it was the kick in the pants they needed Arbour stopped worrying about the regular season.
They added Butch Goring the missing piece. Gave them another legit 1C to go with Trottier. Goring was all around great player. Could play PP PK and was gritty.
Yoo as a die hard islander fan I never seen a goalie stand on his head like Richter did in 94. holy shit the stops he made. Leech one of my favorite players ever.
I lived in Syracuse and Schenectady for a dozen years overall and I supported the Mets, Jets, Knicks and Islanders. Last team to win four straight Stanley Cup titles.
Ranger fans were so brutal that the fans in the Blue seats would chant "Go home red seats (go home)!" late in a winning game. They threw fishheads at Denis Potvin and had an urn with the #35 when the Flyers came to town. Fun times!
Why? Everything and anything in New Jersey is completely irrelevant to everyone living in NYC. New Jersey is a joke to us. There's no rivalry there, except that Devils fans can't make up their own chants and steal them from the Rangers. Plus, you play and live in New Jersey, the asshole of America.
“One since ‘40” is still pretty powerful. Especially considering the Islanders and Rangers have the same amount of cups but have remarkably different histories.
Not a Rangers Or Islanders Fan Since I'm a Huge Flyers Fan But This Battle Of NY is Almost Like The Devils Rangers Rivalry Or Also Known As Crosstown Rivals!
Dennis Bastek jr. I don’t agree and I’m a big Islanders fan. The Devils have won a few Stanley Cups since Gretzky called them a “ Mickey Mouse” organization I think that was around 1983? Since then they’ve had some phenomenal legendary ex Montreal Canadiens (certainly not a Mickey Mouse organization) coaches such as Pat Burns, Jacque Lemaire, and Larry Robinson. They’ve had top notch players possible future HOF’ers such as Scott Stevens and goalie Martin Brodeur. They have had one of the best all time GM’s in Lou Lamiorello. Their fan base is smaller than the Rangers but they have a solid niche market in Suburban New Jersey. They are definitely not a “ Mickey Mouse” organization anymore.
Daveyboy _ I would have thought Flyers-Pens all year round because they play in the same state. But I guess not so much. Devils - Flyers would make sense as a rivalry because parts of New Jersey are in the Metro Philadelphia area such as Cherry Hill.
I have been watching hockey for over 55 years ....back when there just 6 teams in the league I rooted for the. Rangers even though,up until they lost in the finals to. Boston in 1972,they never were that good, mostly because, other than a year or two here and there Montreal dominated ...but I remained loyal I had my faves back then but I liked no one more than "steady eddie. Giacomine (spelling ?) When the Islanders were "born" in 1972 inspite of their early lack of success I instantly became a fan. Here was a team from. New. York I could call my own that I was in on from the "ground floor" a la Jets Mets. But through all the years of being a die hard Islander fan I never hated the. Rangers they remained in a special place in my.happy memories ....one thing I will never understand is the meanness showed by the Ranger fans towards one of my all time favorite players and other than.maybe Bobby. Orr probably the greatest defenseman ever ... Potvins. Cups 🗽
FYI he sustained a pretty bad hand injury fracturing bones dislocated his thumb he’s one of the beginning players who used Nautilis training to rehabilitate his hand in his arm it lead to being one of the hardest shooting defenseman in the league for a period of time it turned around the notion that lifting weights was bad
Was at a bar in Wantagh watching the NYR v TBL 2022 ECF game, there was a thunder storm that night and the satellite dish went out and the TV had no game. Kid maybe 27 sitting next to me pulls out a cellphone and is watching the game because he has the NHL package. He’s cheering for the NYR so I think he a NYR fan, he tells me he’s an Isle fan..🤔 I ask him how can you root for the NYR? He says he hates the TBL because they beat the Isles in 20 an 21 in the playoffs. It’s been 30 years since these 2 teams have seen each other in a playoff game, looking like 31 as of today. When they finally do meet again, a new generation of Hate will be born.
The New York Islanders drought is now on the clock and is about to reach 40 years w/out. a Stanley Cup come next Spring and the New York Rangers are as well on the clock with their drought w/out. the Stanley Cup reaching 1 year shy of 30 years come next Spring! The years of 1983 (Islanders) & 1994 ( Rangers) seems like yesterday but in reality seems like a long, long time when next Spring of 2023 rolls around! 40 & 29 years hard to believe! Time flies quickly!
The PNC arena in Raleigh North Carolina you can also hear Potvin SUCKS!!! When the Rangers or Islanders are in town. So many New Yorkers have escaped high taxes and High cost of living to live in North Carolina.
You can say yankees-red Sox, celtics-lakers or Knicks, packers-bears, no rivalry was as heated and intense as Rangers-Islanders. Both players and fans stoked the fiery rivalry especially Denis Potvin who to this day is still heard the chant "Potvin Sucks".
Nice piece, but why did they completely omit the 1990 1st round playoff series? The Vukota/Bloomberg brawl at the end of game 1, LaFontaine getting knocked out cold, Mallette plastering Jeff Norton... all of that was certainly a big part of a heated rivalry... bad omission
When Lic is sober and prepared he’s just good as anybody in the league remember when he broke his ankle coming out of the Statler Hilton after being drunk for 24 hours
really appreciated this video about the new york rangers/islanders rivalry history! i def remember 1994, and the great islander teams of the early '80's. i'm a red wings fan but am hoping both teams can continue the rivalry with more great battles. NYI is becoming a legit deep playoff contender, and with the rangers getting lafreniere, they should be close if not making the playoffs in 2021. good luck to both teams and looking forward to future great battles. cheers from southern ontario 🍁
That's why the Islanders drew a line in the sand, they did it with their Logo, the I in Islanders points to Nassau coliseum, and the Island does not include Brooklyn or Queens...There is no team like the Islanders, they won 4 cups, yes, but they were great for 10 years...and got good and moved up really fast, they made the playoffs in 2 years and finished 1st -3rd for 14 years...74-88 and averaged over 100 points a season over those 14 years...I remember watching Billy Smith score that goal..my dad out of the USAF after Vietnam and got a job for METLIFE, in 76 he was given the NY Islanders account, and then opened his own place in 88. so I was a kid and a fly on the wall of things people dream about...
Rangers have been here for almost 100 years and islanders have been here for like 50 years and islanders have the same amount of cup wins and are more likely to get another one before the rangers
What’s amazing is that if the Rangers how to start off their career in the NHL the same way they probably be gone in three years the really hard start and the real poor record that the Islanders started with galvanized the organization the coaching staff the general manager and of course the head coach in producing one of the top three sports dynasties in professional sports in the United States they have records that will never be beaten in the playoffs and of course look how many Hall of Fame players made it to the Hall of Fame. For five years the New York islanders were a perfect NHL franchise.
@@berwick777 Seens like Toronto needs him more considering they still can’t get outta the first round lol. Isles definitely need to add a scorer but losing in 7 without their leading scorer was the difference

Islander fan. It still brings me INTENSE JOY to hear the Ranger fans still chanting Potvin's name.....yes, he was that good! Seriously - the hit on Nilsson was absolutely clean - at the exact moment of the hit Nilsson is actually facing Denis - there never was anything dirty about the play. Kudos to all Ranger fans (like the idiot who actually put Potvin's name on a Ranger jersey....) for reminding everyone just how GREAT Denis was!
Did this documentary really just say that the Mets are better than Yankees? Mets won as new comers but Yankees are still king of the hill. Mets are nothing as time went on. Yea I know 2015, Mets at least went to the World Series, but how has the Mets postseason chances been since they lost the World Series. Yankees swept the Mets and Yankees were 1 win away from going to the World Series ON THEIR REBUILDING YEAR!
Also I don’t really care too much about football, that’s why I don’t really care about how they said Jets were better than the Giants. Because I really don’t know much about football. Baseball is more of my game, sorry guys. And of course hockey is also pretty good.
Dave Maloney was referring to the "double chili" game from November '79 when the Isles ran up 10 goals. Since Wendy's gave free chili after 5 goals, 10 goals was two times five, hence "double chili..clap clap clap clap clap...double chili"...
They falsely mentioned how the islanders came to be the New York Islanders. Not because they were going to be the Atlanta Thrashers? Atlanta wasn’t a thought in that day and age to have a team as an expansion!
The NHL feared that the WHA would place a team in NY, so to combat that idea, they added another team in New York figuring that Long Island was a populated area that could support its own team.
I am surprised not to see even a slight mention of the 1990 first round playoff matchup. Both teams were mediocre (Rangers got bounced in the following round), but definitely injurous rival highlights with LaFontaine getting knocked out with the nasty concussion, and in response Al Arbour sending goons Baumgartner and Vukota to make mayhem.
If u want it to happen reply the year u think there will be a conference finals when it’s islanders and rangers. Also this season I’m happy as long as the lightning get don’t get 3 cups in a row and the rangers don’t win the cup

19:59 tavares 😆
LOL LGI
Dave Maloney was referring to the "double chili" game from November '79 when the Isles ran up 10 goals. Since Wendy's gave free chili after 5 goals, 10 goals was two times five, hence "double chili..clap clap clap clap clap...double chili"...
Yea too bad the Rangers needed half of the Edmonton Oilers Stanley Cup team to win hahahahaha you mean..Potvin owned you!
They effectively *bought* the Cup.
Who cares
^ butthurt ranger fan
Loved Craig Mactavish without the helmet which is not allowed these days.
This makes the islanders look like bad guys
We r. We always bully and beat the shit out of the rangers. Even in the parking lots
The new chant is 1994 😂 #CauseChaos ❤️🖤
They falsely mentioned how the islanders came to be the New York Islanders. Not because they were going to be the Atlanta Thrashers? Atlanta wasn’t a thought in that day and age to have a team as an expansion!
TheBKItalianKid they were talking about the Atlanta Flames, who would relocate to calgary in 1980
The NHL feared that the WHA would place a team in NY, so to combat that idea, they added another team in New York figuring that Long Island was a populated area that could support its own team.
Potvin’s Cups! 😂
94 wasn’t even a full season. There was a lockout
94-95 wasn’t correct.
But the year before - 93-94 was a full season. The season the Rangers won the cup
How would I represent the big bad city of behaviors of beef against these teams
oo, la la, so soon?
John isn’t on the isles anymore
Wow.
1:34 Thats the New York Americans.
in ALL honesty i did do and/or probably will SOMEWHAT like hockey including these 2 teams
The Isles crushed the rangers in 1981
Rivalry means that one team has a similar success to the other the New York rangers are a doormat for the New York islanders on the ice
Rangers v isle the new york derby.
If u want it to happen reply the year u think there will be a conference finals when it’s islanders and rangers. Also this season I’m happy as long as the lightning get don’t get 3 cups in a row and the rangers don’t win the cup
It will never beat Bruins-Canadiens.
If I was a Newyorker, well no debate over which Franchise I would cheer for... "Potvin ain't sucks" you Manhattan dummies... but your blue Shirts definitely are ...
Good thing your not New Yorker Dummy ! cause AIN`T is not a word in this ENGLISH language but your not A New Yorker that`s good thing, now go finish fourth grade....sincerely Manhattan Dummy!
