I was a Mormon missionary when I saw this. We weren't allowed to watch movies, but our neighbor invited us over. This was in the Philippines. Naturally, I loved it!
The predators in AVP are supposed to be younger, therefore different build. Paul WS Anderson decided to omit this explanation from the film, the fact he did this was touched upon by Lance Henrikson in the commentary. If I recall, Paul WS Anderson was in the commentary also but didn't respond as to why he did that, possibly a regret?
My mate went to Alien War with a load of French exchange kids at his school - he noticed an alien in the corner of his eye and moved a kid over to that area who hadn't seen it. Kid ended up wetting himself when the alien jumped out!
Another really fun commentary. I have a bit of a soft spot for AVP. As you guys said, as a set up for bringing Xenomorphs to earth, it works really well. I love the scenes showing the Predators visiting the ancient civilisation and showing how they used humans. For me, it works better than what they try to do in Prometheus. Depsite its flaws, it's a fun movie.
Colin Salmon is one of my favourite actors. How I wanted to see him star in his own action flick. A Black Bond would have been a real treat. What a wasted, tantalising opportunity.
Watching this film when it first came out, I wasn't impressed. Now, watching it years later, I have a newfound respect for it. I think it's honestly underrated and has aged well over time. Scar is my favourite Predator next to Wolf and the AVP Elder. The Elder turning up at the end with the clan behind him in the spaceship, with his unique weapon, red cloak looking all badass doing the turn is a standout moment in the Predator franchise.
I saw it in theaters when I was 11. I would eventually gain a bit more respect. I feel Paul Anderson can make a solid horror film, but a lot of the flaws lies in having PG-13 ratings. Like AVP movie should’ve been a bloodbath considering the previous movies in both franchises were already bloody. Yeah not all horror movies needs blood and gore, but blood and gore help set the movie in reality.
Agreed. It's aged quite well. I'd be proud to have made this movie, I love it. Especially the past predators on earth being overrun, tons of great scenes I this movie. 🤟🤟🤟🤟
I guess there are more visual callbacks to the original Aliens films with the Antarctic set, but surely the original setting from the comic - in a desert - would have been even cheaper.
I take it for what it is, even the sequel. You would think with the amount of over produced crap disney put out they woulda fast tracked a proper AvP for the numbers
Believe it or not, I actually do like this movie. It's one of my guilty pleasures. I know it's not a good movie, it is a flawed movie. But I would gladly take this film over the sequel.
This movies is a guilty pleasure for me. The structure setting reminds me of the two-part G.I. Joe story arc with the Joes and the Oktober Guard, issues 6 & 7.
I was so upset coming out of the theatre after watching this “Horrible” movie. Today, excepting what it is I admit it has a very good “repeat” watch value.
It had two old monsters, the bad director of Resident Evil, a non-plot almost stolen from The Thing and driven by tons of CGI and souless actors...what could we expect from this?
The unrated cut has become a kind of ‘guilty pleasure film’ for me in recent years, possibly due in part to the 2010 game. It would be great to see more AVP content under the Disney merger, let it be film, TV, or following Marvel’s recent comics (so long as it’s written well and not rushed)
The film should have used the original dark horse comic storyline. With a stronger focus on a single lead it could have been great. Saying that it was frankenstein meets the wolfman fundamentally misses the point.
well for starters.... the asshole executives had the absolute balls to rate this movie PG-13, all of the other films in the series had hard R-ratings (with the exception of "Predator 2" which was originally rated NC-17, but was brought down to an "R" after having several scenes trimmed)
I actually admired that this film tried something different at least. The lack of 18 cert was disappointing, but it had a decent atmosphere; a true guilty pleasure. AVP2 though... that's gotta be one of the worst films ever lol
ANY Alien or Predator (or both) NEEDD to have a "R" rating. You cant make Cosmic Horror for Children (Disney Shit). Adult movies with Adult content FOR ADULTSS
I saw this in the theater and thought it was better than I thought a movie shoehorning two movie series together could be. I'm also a big fan of groups of people investigating an ancient, alien, lost or secret location. It's always intriguing to me.
It ain't a good film, but at least you can say it was made with love. Unlike AVP Requiem, which was made with contempt for the two IP's it pillaged from, contempt for the audiences of both series of movies it smashed together like a clumsy child, and contempt for life in general really.
Before the movie came out, I heard the predator suits were so bulky that the actors were getting too tired to do the action scenes. That may explain why they is so little action in it.
This film f'd up.by making a chest burster exit in an hour & one normal xeno kill 2 yautjas! F'n dumb & disrespectful! Celtic shoulda won that fight. No xeno had any unique characteristics except that big ass queen in the end. The predators are the more unique aliens & they wasted 2 in 5 minutes. Dumb! Also im pretty sure a xeno skull would crqfkcif smashes into stone walls & columns. This movie isnt 100% trash but its half trash & half alright.
I'm a fan of both series warts and all but I've not found the any will or Interest to watch this or Requiem, Paul WS Anderson is like an off button for me.
Anderson didn’t direct requiem. Personally, this might be because AVP was the first movie I saw in the franchise, but I liked it for the most part. I can easily see the events of this movie being easier to cover up than the events in the next movie. But I still do consider the AVP movies the weakest out of the alien/predator movies
@@adamcammack3534 in all honesty, I’ve felt the same. They are the weakest, though personally, the first one has the most potential, it just needed blood to help make it feel more real. Requiem had the R-rating, but the story was pretty crap.
This film has nothing but superficiality, so far from the quality of the first three Aliens, and the original two Predator films, and even Predators afterwards. Thank God for Prey giving that franchise some gravitas back. Now if Fede Alvarez and Noah Hawley can do the same for Alien we will be all set.
I own alien on Apple. Dan O Bannon talks at length about how he polished his script until it gleamed. Every bit is his work and the few bits that aren’t are crap additions from pretty usurpers. He tells of going to arbitration and willing a resounding victory.
The entire concept of this is stupid beyond belief. Not that monster vs films hadn't happened before but the problem with this is that it completely takes away from the Lovecraft mystery of the Alien itself. After 4 garbage sequels and these films the Alien has been reduced from a terrifying unknown thing to simply a target to be shot at. Now the Alien franchise is a complete joke. It never should have been a franchise.
Not really. The fact that the Alien has been shat on over the years until the entire thing is garbage can never be overstated. Trash like this and frankly every film since Aliens has done nothing but tarnish a fantastic Lovecraft inspired creation.

I was 11 at the time, and it scared me, but it ultimately got me into the franchise. After watching the original movies, I ended up thinking it wasn’t that good, but then rewatching AVP, I’m left torn. But I feel like that’s because AVP at least, felt too clean. Like for example, the main character should’ve been covered in blood, and looking like Sigourney Weaver or Arnold at the end of their films, completely exhausted, covered in blood and sweat. I kinda wish we got more of Lex considering she was the only survivor of the expedition outside of the ship crew
@@mrdawks8932 I liked it when I first saw it, but I think it was more for the experience of seeing an R-rated alien film in theaters. Plus that was around the time I liked aliens and resurrection more because they were action movies, so I liked requiem. But then I realized you could hardly see anything. I’ll take the events as canon, but I still find it one of the weakest films in the franchise for multiple reasons.

In what universe is alien vs predator a “bad movie”? Did we watch the same film?
Imagine Arny as Dutch yelling out "RIPPLEYY!!! GET DOWN! ARRHGHH"
RIPLEY: GET AWAY FROM DUTCH YOU BI#%&
Definitely a guilty pleasure movie
I can't say that this was a bad movie, because I have re-watched it numerous times💯

Alien has one of my all time favorite scores. Top 3 at the least and it might be my favorite. It’s definitely close regardless
Saw this in the cinema and didn't hate it, a few memorable moments, but the predators and lead were pretty underwhelming
I didn't even know what I was watching once they get to Antartica. LOL😂
Loved this commentary, sure do hope you follow through with AVP2 I havent watched that since it came out.
More of these with rob please, im a big fan of both of your channels.

I didn't go into this flick expecting Hamlet or anything. I took it for what it was and thus I dig this movie.
It's fun, mindless action and fanfiction. Nothing wrong with that!
"Be an Alien or be burnt by my guts acid"
Lines like that could have saved this movie 🤔
