  • S&S Super B Carb Cleaning on my 74 Ironhead Sportster. I want to get this bike's engine running VERY well before we begin the complete tear down to the frame to begin the REAL bike building.
I have never touched a Carb in my life, so this is a learning process for me! I take off my S&S Super B Carb and give her a serious detail cleaning. It most certainly needed it. After taking off the Carb I find that some important gaskets are missing and the jets are needing resized.
Next video will be the Carb being rejetted and adding new gaskets. Hopefully with a little love for this carb, we can get the Ironhead Sportster running properly!

For future reference, it's more convenient to remove the carb from the intake manifold rather than removing it with the intake still attached. Now you're going to get a crash course in re-aligning the intake to the heads. Anything less than just right will result in an intake leak every time; which will cause the bike to run lean. You'll know if it starts backfiring through the carb and exhaust and not wanting to idle. There are several videos out there on how to do it. Good luck. Keep these vids coming.

    • @BikerBabeBeth

Thanks for the heads up! Its a good thing I did take the intake manifold off as well. It was missing the bands for the manifold. The manifold clamps were directly on the manifold and engine. 🙄

    • @s.gossett5966
      @s.gossett5966 3 года назад +2

@@BikerBabeBeth I thought that's what you said. It might be the real reason you needed to run with the choke and wouldn't idle. It was probably sucking air through there and the choke was need to force enough fuel in to run.
Might be worth getting the band seals, cleaning the carb and reinstalling as is before changing jets. That way you have a baseline to start from that isn't suffering from other issues.

@@s.gossett5966 Good point !! @ Babe, please dont change jets yet before you eliminate air suck . The is a lot of ways to check if air suck is in place .. Also straight pipes does not mean that they are empty inside. Please check that . If they are empty , so called drag pipes , then normally you need to increase in size of jets because of increased airflow .. I had similar situations and ended up with bunch of new different size jets i hands , but still using the ones which came with carb..

    Keep it up you two.

Those lumps of iron and aluminum are okay as long as you don't beat on 'em too much. TLC is the watch phrase for ironheads. S&S B series carbs are good overall replacement carbs. I ran one on my Pan/Shovel until I built a stroker out the engine. I ended up running a SU carb (Rivera Engineering). Lectron carbs are pricey, but they work with just about any engine configuration. The folks at Lectron are helpful and knowledgeable. The NorCal-styled Sporties of the late 1960s-early 1970s were righteous. Check out some old photos of that style of chopper. Merry Christmas Beth and your guy.

While you have the carb off, replace the intake manifold seals. They are notorious for leaking. It would only run with enrichner on so it sounds like it's sucking air somewhere.

Also consider putting on later model flat band robber seals, alit easier to install and won't slip like oring. Plus you put on nice looking two piece clamp set. Did this with my 69 xlch and never had another problem. Good luck and keep on wrenching!

I am sure that someone already said it. Get rid of the B carb. S&S came out with the shorty E back in the late 80's. It doesn't stick out so far and it has an accelerator pump. When the shorty came out, my dad got rid of that B carb. Good luck with your project. Once you have the bugs worked out, it will be rewarding.

Best to always use standard right size stuff for the carbie you have got, or get a different carbie. Well done on removing and rebuilding your carb 👍

Might want to consider getting the finolic block put back between the carb and intake. keeps the heat soak from reaching the carb and playing havioc with the float level. 29.5 intermediate and a 70 main is a great starting point , set the idle mixture screw at 1 1/2 turns out for the initial start up and go from there. the super b is a great carb and will serve you well, a great addition for it is a super bowl withe the bendix style accelerator pump for that kick only bike. i run them on all my small motor shovels .have fun good luck

I am really enjoying your learning process here on your Sporty. I am very much looking forward to getting my own dream bike soon. She's a Yamaha cruiser, but she's been sitting for almost two years. I'll be going through the same processes when I get her, cleaning the carb, rejetting, all that. Watching you wrench and find the fun ways that people just use the parts they had on hand is 'Fascinating', to quote Mr Spok. I'll be working with a Mikuni, but the concepts for a CV carb are pretty similar even if the jet sizes are different. I've only had to open up almost a dozen more windows as I watch you go along. Looking up the other poster's videos, the parts suppliers, the forum sites for my cruiser, and the RUclipss. Have you thought about porting the intake as long as you have the carb off? I have found that that is a thing on a Sporty as well as mine. It is supposed to smooth things and add 3 to 5 HP more. Just an idea, I did see some videos on it. I can hardly wait till spring and see you getting your beast out there on the road. Good Luck with it !!!

  • @stepheneckles2345
    @stepheneckles2345 3 года назад

What I would have done with the air cleaner mounting bolts is to cut a slot in the head (make sure you stuff a rag in there first) using a dremel tool it's faster than a hack saw. Then used a screwdriver to loosen them. I would try and replace them with a button head socket drive fastener. No more sockets just used an allen wrench to put them back in.

Use the later rubber band style intake rubbers and clamps on your manifold the old o-ring style leak no matter what you do.
Another trick is to carefully wrap them with no more than two wraps of good electrical tape if you're going to use the o-rings. If it's sucking air you'll never adjust the carburetor.

  • @jeffcoler3104

An unmetered air leak will have you running around pulling your hair out, and I'm running out of hair. BTW, a super E would be more civil, as it has an accelerator pump. Can't snap the throttle open, it'll fall flat on it's face. ROLL into the throttle. Have fun and stay safe.

    NO NO NO NO!
Straight pipes reduce back pressure & INCREASE FLOW.
Meaning MORE GAS, hence a LARGER main jet.
Jet size is also relative to ALTITUDE.
The engine needs AIR & FUEL.
At sea level air is more dense (more of it)
Likewise more fuel is needed (larger jet)
The higher the altitude the smaller the jet.
...but WHY would you think the jet sizes are incorrect now, as is?
Your idle passage is likely BLOCKED with stale, dry gas deposits.
What it needs is a good cleaning.
...& why go to a .com when there are several RUclipsrs explaining these things?
    Also, replace your O-rings!
If you have an air leak your bike will run lean, badly & can RUIN your engine.
Check this guy out. He`s on RUclips, very knowledgeable, repairs bikes, in Ohio, & buys & sells parts on Ebay & he LOVES Sportsters!
