I just bought a B type S and S carbie, I need a manifold. It's going on my 76 flh. I'm in the process of putting a new wiring loom through it. Shovelheads are hotrods on 2 wheels. I bought my first Shovel 30 years ago a 73 flh and new immediately it was the steel horse for me. Long live Harley-Davidson. Live to ride. Stay upright guys.
FYI. The adjustment between rich and lean is actually pretty small. Its like a 1.5 turn window on this bike. I was testing it because this bike was new to me. I'm planning on replacing this video with a better one soon.
Buddy if it wasn't for people like you to do these videos I would be one of those guys you are talking about that owns a harly and does something stupid Thank you for all the information that you you put out and just this video alone
I just got through cleaning my s&s carb. I can tell you that the tune under load is different than the one on the kickstand. Mine is a '83 shovel. BTW, clockwise leans the mixture and counterclockeise enriches it.
hey man that was nice. i have 1976 xlch sportster and you are right. you either understand or you dont. i`m learning but the ride makes it worth it. good job
What jetting should I have for a 1200 shovelhead with a thunderheader? I can't get the stumble to go away and I put a new accelerator pump kit on it too.
You can have horsepower and sound if you get the right parts. I got a 77 flh far from stock but I'm right at about 1 horse per cubic inch and same on torque. I just smoked a 103" bagger 20 minutes ago. I actually turned around I thought his bike broke all he said was god damb what did you do to that motor.
Once I have mine dialed in I use a dab of blue lock tight on each screw or under on spring to keep them in place longer . They will eventually vibrate loose with lock tight but def much longer . You’ll thank me later . Ol school die hard hippie jt ✌️
Im unfamiliar with the S& S. I've got a S&S Super B on my '67 shovel and I cannot find any info on the B and the accelerator pump adjustment screw seems I can't find. Does it even have an adjustment
Wish I could run my straights here in so cal man love those handsome shovels .libs hate the sound of American steel here. Probably cuz there aren't many red bloods here to begin with. 83 shovel here. Thanks for postin your bike sounds sweet. Way to remember mixture... Lean in
Hallo, i'm from Italy, i'm interested about carburator mix but i'm not able to understand when you speak about it. Can you write me in few words what do you do? thank you
+LORENZO RUGOLOTTO The mixture on a carburetor is the adjustment that controls the percentage of fuel in the air that goes into the engine. A perfect fuel to air ratio is 14.7/1 however anything close will work. On old vehicals you dont actually know what this number is but you can set it by listening to the engine run while you turn the screw. Enriching it adds more gas, while turning it the other way leans it out adding less gas. If you go too far in either direction the engine wont want to run well. Turning it too far clockewise will ad too much gas end the engine will want to cough and die, turning it too far counter clock wise will lean it out to where the engine wont get enough gas and it will want to idle down and die. What you do is turn the screw one way until you hear the idle change, then you slowly turn the screw the other way while counting the turns until the idle changes again. Then you set the screw half way between those two points. You will be ok with it set there but depending on the vehical a very small adjustment is needed for it to run perfect. The motorcycle in the video for example likes to be about a 1/4 turn towards the rich side from half way. If you're not sure rich is safer then lean however. Running rich wont hurt the engine it just might eventually foul the spark plugs. Running too lean can make the engine hot and damage it. I hope that helps.
@@lonesometinman3147 I will run 60 in cool weather and 90 in summer but my motor is a bit of a pig and I ride like an asshole so it gets hot like 212 in july
ok , in my own experience and the spark plugs talk to me close the my ears and eyes .. 29.5 / 72 ..and shut off accelerator pump .. and 1 3/4 turns ... and my chubby girl runs perfect in high and low idle perfect .. and my spark plugs .. nice grey ..
the best sounding motorcycle on this earth is a shovelhead with drag pipes. if you want horsepower invest in a 120R engine. mine hauls ass. but my shovel with drag pipes sounds better.
That's not really true had my shovel on dyno got drags just dont go get 2" pipes 1 3/4 and learn to tune jet and have the right parts on the inside. I actually lost hp with baffled pipes not much I think it was 2. Right now it's got 1 hp per cubic inch same torque and at about 84 cubes.
@@hanskonrad5850 to ride it dont matter how old it is you are supposed to still ride like a man I got a 77 flh I had for 22 years I beat the balls out of it almost every day and if it brakes just fix it with better parts that can handle what I call just riding it Lol
Are you joking ? You don't know what you're doing .you're just turning screws and hope that you think it's correct. I've got a 69 generator/ distributor Shovel and that wine is the generator not the belt. Anyway your carb adjustment technique is not accurate, you'll be tweaking it all day long. Let the bike get up to temp.set idle.set idle mixture.turn in pump several turns.blip throttle and turn out 1/4 turn at a time till no stumble.ta da!
Bingo Chief , that’s how I’ve been doin it since 1969 . Works every time . So easy ! ✌️ bro
cool video. just picked up an 81 fxb sturgis. follow your video to adjust my carb. runs great. Thanx

Counter clockwise is richening

Cool video. Whine from the belt drive? All my shovelheads were chain primary and whined just the same from gear drive components inside cam chest
Very informative and well said

S&S Super B does not have a pump unless somebody put a super bowl with a Bendix pump on it, good carb.
could you tell me the year and model shovel it is please, I'm in new zealand and am looking for an oldie just like yours. Lee
Anywhere from 73-83 flh
Sorry I didn't see the cases at first it's an early shovel generator style that puts it between 66-73 flh

Not just that but also the oil pressure at real low rpm is too low
1000 idle speed on most harleys
Shovelheads aren't most Harleys.

hey cool vid great looking shovel , mine 83 wg. paerdon if i missed it but where did you end up setting the fuel pump screw ...how many turns out

60 wt...pump will handle 70 wt.in really hot environment
