I decided to check how many league games it took for both Messi and CR7 to reach the next 100 goals, and since both of them have 300 league goals (400 in the case of Messi), i counted those 100 goals increments too (stats taken from www.transfermarkt.com ):
- It took CR7 92 league games to score 100 goals for RM: achieved in game RM - Real Sociedad, Mar 24 2012.
- It took CR7 87 league games more to score another 100 goals for RM and reach 200 league goals: achieved in game RM - Celta Vigo, Dec 6 2014. Since league goals #100 and #101 both came in the same game, this game was counted twice: once for the 1st 100 league goals and another for the next 100 league goals.
- It took CR7 108 league games to score 100 goals more for RM and reach 300 league goals: achieved in game RM - Getafe, Mar 3 2018.
- It took Messi 154 league games to score 100 goals for Barcelona: achieved in game Almeria - Barcelona, Nov 20 2010: this huge number of games is because it includes the beginning of Messi’s career: obviously a player is not expected to perform as well when the career is beginning VS when it’s “in full swing”.
- It took Messi 82 league games more to score another 100 goals for Barcelona and reach 200 league goals: achieved in game Barcelona - Osassuna, Jan 27 2013. Since league goals #199, #200, #201 and #202 all came in the same game, this game was counted twice: once for the 2nd 100 league goals and another for the next 100 league goals.
- It took Messi 100 league games to score 100 goals more for Barcelona and reach 300 league goals: achieved in game Sporting Gijón - Barcelona, Feb 17 2016.
- It took Messi 102 league games to score 100 goals more for Barcelona and reach 400 league goals: achieved in game Barcelona - Leganés, Jan 20 2019.
CR7 took less than 100 league games to score 100 goals twice, in succession (1-100 and 101-200), while Messi only did it once (101-200) but Messi’s “one occasion” took 5 games less than CR7’s best (101-200).
One other neat detail that shows how close these two giants really are is that it took 286 league games for CR7 to reach 300 goals while it took Messi 283 league games to reach from 101 to 400 goals (didn't count Messi's 1-100 goals because it includes the beginning of his career which isn't a fair comparison). It's that famous "91 calendar goal year" that makes the difference because the difference between Messi's 101-200 goals VS 201-300 and 301-400 is higher than CR7's best VS worst (101-200 goals VS 201-300 goals).

For Spain, villa is definitely the greatest striker in the last 20-30 years. Not including Di stefano and others like Suarez and Zarra, coz I haven't watched them play. Raul was great for Spain, but villa is better. At club level, I consider them to be close but Raul takes the slight advantage
Spain were a very average side for most of Raul's career. Not saying one is necessarily better than the other, but Villa would've been on the end of many more chances. Also, Villa was/is more of a traditional number 9 than Raul was, and goals alone don't necessarily make one player better than another.

Another idea about the debate of CR7 VS Messi: since it's not "fair" to compare a player that has played for another top club for 6 years VS a player beginning with a club, how about a comparison from goals 101 to 200? And since both players have over 300 league goals for the respective teams, another comparison can be made from goals 201 to 300.
So: which one was fastest from goals 101 to 200 and from 201 to 300? And what were the goal ratios?

Should consider a smaller number of goals, instead of 100: about 60 / 75 or so should do it. Many more players reached 60 / 75 goals than 100 and the total results could change quite a bit due to transfers, for example. It's also possible more players could be in multiple charts because of it as well.

Include Portuguese league as well: there will be a "surprise" called Peyroteo. If you think CR7 is good for doing it in less than 100 matches, Peyroteo had a career goal ratio of 1.69 (332 goals in 197 matches): that's a better goal ratio than CR7 and Messi COMBINED.
Peyroteo had 106 goals after 55 games: that's completely INSANE!!!!!!!!
There's also Eusébio, with 1.05 career goal ratio (317 goals in 301 games).
