Tai is the Tree and Ahom is a branch.
There are many brances of Tai:-
Dai, Zhuang, Bouyei, Thai, Isan, Tai Yai, Shan, Tai Lai, Lao, Tai Meitei, Tai Ahom, Tai khamti, Tai Khamyang, Tai Aiton, Tai Phake and more with about 93million population all over south-east Asia mainly in Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Northeast India and South-China( Ahoms came from Yunna province of China )

There are 50 ethnicity. All of them including the Han Chinese has a common ancestor. The Ahom ancestors could be more archaic than others in China. Only DNA test can confirm this.

Dai are presently the largest minority of China whose ancestors ( Baiyue) inhabited yangtze kiang river Valley for at 40-50kya before being displaced by the northern Han inhabitants of yellow river Valley. China as we know it now is only a recent entity. So yes we can somewhat say China came from Ahoms(Tai/ Dai/ Baiyue)

The novel is about rich cultural heritage of the Morans, one of the aboriginal tribes of Assam. During the 13th century, they resided in the south-eastern corner of the Brahmaputra valley. They had an abundant kingdom led by king Bodousa before the advent of the Ahom king chu-ka-pha. Having arrived in this affluent kingdom, Chu-Ka-Pha proposed to marry princess Gondheswari- the daughter of Moran king Bodousa. The peace loving king Bodousa accepted his proposal and the history of Assam took a turning point to be shaped as it is found today.
