Korg M1 is not "just a ROMpler".

  • I keep reading this all the time and it simply couldnt be further from the truth. If you dive beyond the presets, theres a very rare kind of beauty waiting to be discovered. The Korg M1 is a legend for its presets, yes, but it can be so much more than that.
    Here are some of my patches to show you that the M1 is far from an old limited ROMpler.
    Enjoy.

    This is my favourite synth. I got into electronic music in 2017 and when I discovered this thing I felt in love. It sounds pretty outdated but in a charming way. Pads here are amazing. Also good sounds for techno. I just wish it had knobs and faders.

      If you spend some time in those menus programming it, it can be very rewarding. I also believe it somehow could be mapped and controlled externally via SysEx.

    What would be great instead of their typical Kronos or whatever they're doing these days...
    Remake the M1 with an O1-Wfd engine behind it, add more filters, knobs, pots, and sliders, stick to the main formula, but NOT Kronos or wtfever it and ruin it. Something like best of both worlds (without the new gimmicks screwing it up).

      Yeah that's what we love to see because we do love these old machines. But they are still selling these new powerhouses so in their eyes it's all good:) Idk, maybe it's just us people thinking that the older was better and had soul and all that. Maybe in 2050 we will feel this way about Kronos:)

    Lovely patches! I still have my O1Wfd that I purchased new when they came out. I dust it off occasionally….and it’s really a powerful workstation, especially considering what was around when it came out. Cheers!

      @@alfabutane I went from a DX11 to the 01W so it was quite a change for me…intimidating in some ways, although easier to “just play” as the presets were more “playable” out of the box. Still wish I had the DX11 actually, but I’ve kept every synth I’ve purchased since the 01W. Cheers!

      Hm, but it's the same as on any other subtractive synthesizer. I'm sure there are tutorials out there. In this case I've just picked a simple saw wave (this is a single not a double patch), then set the amp and filter envelopes, a little bit of oscilator detuning and added chorus and reverb on top.

    my buddy is going to gift me one that has had a battery replacement. i'm wondering if i can just build my own patches from scratch without installing the factory presets via sysex.

    • @alfabutane
      @alfabutane  Год назад

      The patches, even the ones you want to build yourself are based on the sampled waveforms that serve as sort of an oscillator here so without them you won't be able to crate any sounds. However, these should be written in the memory even if you've deleted all the preset patches.

    • @lovemadeinjapan
      @lovemadeinjapan Месяц назад

      @@alfabutane This response is a little confusing. The M1 has 4MB of multisample ROM, with 100 (multi)samples that have different samples per pitch-range, part of them are DWGS waveforms derived from the DW8000, that can be seen as oscillator waveforms, beyond yet including the standard sine,saw and square wave. The 4MB is built in ROM, and always available.
      Then there is the patch memory, which is RAM, kept active after turn off with a CR2032 battery. This contains up to 100 patches, and 100 combinations, and up to 7000 notes of MIDI data. If the battery dies and you start from scratch, all patches are "empty" and sound very weird, but you can change them as you like, and include any of the 100 sample waveforms. To keep the patches, even without battery, you can dump them over Sysex to your computer. And load them back onto the M1 again.

    Can you make a tutorial on how to create sounds like this on the m1?

    • @alfabutane
      @alfabutane  11 месяцев назад +1

      Hey, to be honest I don't like doing tutorials. I don't feel comfortable in that position, it takes a LOT of time to make (and I would rather spend it on making music) and I believe it kinda ruins the experience for the end user of a gear because instead of going through that exciting learning process where all the passion grows exponentially, you are just presented the result. But with this being said, I can export these as SysEx Dump and send it to you if you want, you can then check all the parameters and how they are set. Thank you for understanding this.

    The hidden gem of the M1 is IMO the effect section. Double 10 second reverbs, distortion, flanger, delay, you can mess up the basic sounds to great extend. If you want an M1, I found out it is better to hunt down a T2ex. They are usually cheaper, it has the exact same engine, but it has 8MB of waveforms instead of 4MB (twice as many), it has a usable sequencer and you can store your stuff on flopies instead of over expensive RAM cards with pain-in-the-butt bateries. It even allows you to load samples with C6 from Elektron to add even more synthesis options.

    • @alfabutane
      @alfabutane  Год назад +1

      Absolutely agree on that FX part, those things all sound so good it's unbelievable. I mean, I know there are some high wuality effect units even from the 90s but this thing came out in 88 and has a sequencer, over 100 samples, nice synt engine AND a dual fx unit without any compromises.
      Never even seen the T2ex in real life but i need to check them out. Thanks!

      @@buggzo M1Rex. It is the M1 in rack format but with the T2ex sample ROM. So all the sounds, but not the advanced sequencer, floppies and sample memory.

    • @buggzo
      @buggzo Год назад

      @@lovemadeinjapan what is special about the sequencer? Was planning on a separate hardware or DAW sequencer but would be willing to give something else a shot if it adds to the creativity workflow

    • @lovemadeinjapan
      @lovemadeinjapan Год назад

      @@buggzo Nothing special, actually it is still very basic, but the M1 has a 8000 note limit, and the T2 extends that to 50000 notes. Also floppy storage is way more versatile than RAM card storage. Another benefit is 4x MIDI-out, which is quite exceptional.
