@@hollandscottthomas I JUST found out she's an accomplished Skydiver! So this is likely a gag to her real life ability to effortlessly dance in the sky.
I mean… who gave a fuck about Ironman, Captain America, or Thor before the MCU? Yeah, guardians people cared about even less than the above, but next to no one gave a fuck about the avengers either.
@@chrisxx5583 Cap might’ve just barely been a B+, but yeah, the general public only really knew (not even cared, just knew of) Spider-Man and the X-Men.
I loved Chekhov's gravity boots! At the beginning, Rocket talks about trying out new grav boots as why he's walking on the ceiling, and then the Evolutionary explains how he manipulates gravity to be powerful much later. Rocket turning on the grav boots at the end to cancel out the effect was such an "ah ha!" moment for me.
Despite the boots being spelled out in the beginning of the movie, I did NOT see them coming back around until Rocket finally presses the button. Fucking amazing.
@@nickszune7196 I had to watch it a second time to realize he activated his gravity boots from the beginning of the movie. That's when I had the "ohhhh ok that's why" moment.
Agreed I thought that was awesome. It’s such a simple solution to an otherwise OP power, and without it the High Evolutionary has nothing on Rocket. Plus it’s just cool that Rocket is making his own gravity boots. Also it reminds me of Ratchet and Clank lol, which is great because Iron Man calls Rocket “Ratchet” in Endgame.
My friend pointed out that Rocket's little keycard device that he created to open the cages is the same device he had when we first saw him in GotG1 when hes reading about the bounties. I love James Gunn for bringing that device full circle.
Was also phenomenal how they ended where it all began back on earth with his grandfather. Movie wasn’t perfect but damn did Gunn tie things together nicely in this finale.
I moment i think I noticed is in the beginning Nebula seems to know a little bit more about Rocket then Peter does (and everyone else) which makes sense because they were the only two who didn’t get snapped away for 5 years, and spent that time serving on black widow’s council of heroes
Many Marvel movies feature heroes that create their own villains. This one has a villain that creates a hero. And then, because that hero has something that he himself doesn't have - the capacity to love, one might even say a soul - he can't stand his existence and tries to destroy him. And gets his face ripped off for his trouble. A satisfying change, I thought.
I would've loved your take on Hollywood's worst lesson to take from the success of this Guardians. "GOTG 3 was successful, we've gotta get more animal cruelty in stories!"
I loved that the post credits scene is just a joke and not a teaser for a future thing. This movie is completely divorced from the mcu’s perpetual sequel machine and I love it.
Agreed. This should have been mentioned in the review. Peter is going back to his Earth family and starting to heal. But it's also just dealing with an old man who's everyday life is being grouchy about his neighbors.
One of my favorite characters in this was nebula, seeing how she worked with the others and how much she cared about them while still acting all stoic and hardened was great, especially her concern for the badger in the med Bay
Nebula became my favorite MCU character during the scene in Endgame where she and Rhodey are on Morag quietly marveling at how uncomfortably embarrassing Quill's dance number was. I've been longing for a War Machine / Nebula buddy comedy for years now.
High Evolutionary/ creativity - 1/2 of Batch 89 had this skill. Lila had it too - not just Rocket. SHE was the one who prodded "what will our names be?" THAT'S creativity. I think Lila helped Rocket continue that, like maybe he wouldn't have on his own without her encouragement.
I think it’s interesting and probably in character that the high evolutionary only cares about the kind of creativity that forwards his on agenda, not accepting that it’s all part of the same creative nature that gave rocket empathy
Honestly I think Guardians 2 ending was much better. The loss of a surrogate father after defeating the villainous real father, a moment of clarity and catharsis tinted with grief and redemption, all set to a beautiful funeral firework with the perfect accompanying music. Guardians 2 is just so much more emotionally satisfying from start to finish.
I'm sick of these Hollywood villains, where when you meet the villain you empathize with him and he's not really a villain, Cruella type. I'm happy we can hate this villain without him being a tormented good guy.
Nah I feel like when they do tormented most of the time they don't do it right and make the villain too sympathetic but I do agree it's a nice change of pace to see a down right evil villain character like the High Evolutionary character
I feel that what's happened is Hollywood's confusing types of villains with good villains. Like yeah, having sympathetic villains is great, but you can make a horrible person intresting.
If I had a nickel for every time “No Sleep til Brooklyn” played in a Chris Pratt film, I would have 2 nickels. It isn’t a lot, but it’s weird it happened more than once within a 1 month timeframe.
Just quickly just now FYI. Peter Quill says he came up with the plan to capture Thanos but it was Strange who knew the singular outcome that would work. Strange set things up to allow everything to play out and Quill is just taking credit
@@mrsundaymovies From Peter’s point of view his plan would have worked if he hadn’t lost his shit on Thanos. He doesn’t know that only 1 outcome could work because of the time keepers. We also don’t know what Strange’s definition of winning is.
Given that Vol. 2 is capped with Yondu’s incredible death sequence, that fact that he sacrifices himself, and that it resonates so well emotionally, I’m glad that Vol. 3 didn’t go down the same route. Having it end with the Guardians all leaving to pursue their own ambitions felt in equally parts satisfying and sad - great conclusion.
One thing I've not seen many people mention, is that the guardians set up base in the last place he ever saw the love of his life. No wonder he'd have a bit of trauma
I had that thought cross my mind yesterday, just thinking about how they made their home in a place where they have 2 different traumatic events there, both the first confrontation with Thanos, and Ronan's assault in the first movie where Drax almost dies because of his bravado
I loved the film from start to finish. While it's inevitable that the MCU is gonna continue the story of some of the characters-- I like how the film gives finality to this franchise and does not leave things unresolved. I'm now more excited for James Gunn's Superman project more than ever.
Also, Thom Yorke both sang that version of Creep (recorded well before the movie) and has also expressed how he thinks the lyrics suck and laments how it's turned into a 'loser's anthem' -- I think that makes it fit all the better (and the song was diegetic, as almost every song in every GotG film is)
Definitely agree that the soundtrack took me out a little bit this time, it does feel like including somewhat more current music means this movie loses a certain sense of identity compared to the other two. On further thought I'm okay with it though, I think it's meant to signify Star-Lord moving away from the trauma that's kept him away from Earth for so long/him handing over Guardians leadership to Rocket. Essentially, the 70's/80's music that we've associated with the Guardians... isn't really a Guardians thing? It's a Peter Quill thing, because that's the time period he's basically been stuck in. Expanding the music lineup feels like him moving on with his life, and also that leadership is transferring to Rocket, who doesn't have the same hang-ups?
This was a great send-off, the last scene and the first post credit really hit me with the feels. I'm glad that at least for the near future this group has a proper conclusion.
I loved Adam and Ayesha in this movie. I really appreciated the funny little goofy side villains they turned out to be. Wished there was more of them but they were fun while they lasted
I love those two. Reminds me of Dick Dastardly and Muttley from Wacky Races. Just trying to capture Rocket but always seeming to fail. I also love Ayesha always wanting to present herself as a superior being but almost always losing her cool when things don't go her way.
I didn't have high hopes for Warlock going in, but I'm super impressed how he managed to take such little dialog and screen time and knock his role out of the park. Somehow in a film full of memorable moments he managed to take a bit part and totally stand out as one of the (many) high points.
If anyone has ANY doubts about James Gunn’s Superman movie, they need to watch this series of movies. I understand Gunn’s sense of humor and writing style may not be for everyone, however you cant deny the amount of heart and dedication he puts into his projects. If he can bring that same energy and enthusiasm to “Legacy” i think the DCU should be just fine.
@@alx_12109 I’ve googled it, he’s making Superman Legacy. I’ve yet to see him officially confirm it’s gonna be a man yet. I like Gunns movies and trust him to deliver something good, I was just asking cause the change of Superman to SuperGirl in the Flash.
Well you would think he'd get a new helmet and rocketpack after Gotg2, considering he lives on a space station and watched his father figure die from asphyxiation, in space
James Gunn answered this although not sure if he just made this up on the spot that they were in such a rush to help Rocket that he left all his stuff in Knowhere and in fairness when we first see Peter he was drunk and probably in casual wear.
@@Sbensonn nah, leaving important space stuff while in space is stupid. While I think Peter is the dumbest MCU character I'm still going to have to chalk this one up as a plot hole.
Everybody's too hard on Endgame Starlord. The dude had just reached the end conclusion of his character arc by killing Gamora, symbolically learning to let go like he couldn't with his mom, and at the moment that character actualization happens, Thanos snaps his fingers and goes "Haha jk, you don't get closure." He's left in an unstable and reflexively immature state as he has to grapple with the fact that he made the choice to kill the woman he loved to save the universe, and acted on that choice, but the universe wasn't saved, and the only hope left for Starlord was that Gamora was still alive. All that hope comes crashing down in a single moment. And he lashes out in anger. Unwittingly dooming everyone.
It's not that, his whole plan was to give thanos what he deserves and his alternate to that was to risk messing that plan up to punch in the face a guy that could take a punch from hulk? That's like me having Hitler hanging over an acid pool, learning he killed my father then pulling him away from the pool so I could give him a will smith slap or poke him in the eye 3 stooges style. And You can see what such an outburst did for chris rocks career vs will Smith's career - theres a lesson here
@@johnstevensstevens402 Yeah, but if you remember Will Smith did hit Chris Rock. People's emotions do sometimes get the better of them, especially in high-stress moments.
@@Wrynwynn high stress? Id have bought it if he didn't try to kill gamora himself a few scenes earlier where it was thanos that saved her. why doesn't he give himself a slap for that? Obviously the stress couldnt have been too high if he was able to get over himself enough to pull the trigger in that instance. Plus that was a life or death scenario. He'd kill her to save the world but cant sit through hearing an obituary of her to save it?? Its silly
I feel like in a couple of decades' time, folk who were kids for this will look back on a certain couple of scenes in the same way we look back at that Swamps of Sadness scene in the Neverending Story, y'know?
At first, I thought the needle drops were a bit jarring too. Jumping around in eras of music. But then, halfway through the movie I realized the songs were chosen for their themes and meaning rather than the era necessarily. A LOT of the songs deal with alienation and reaching out for human connection and compassion. Which, is one of the big themes of the film and where the Guardians are all at in their personal journeys.
I find it interesting that a big theme in this movie seems to be second chances with each member of the guardians finding a new lease on life and Peter and Rocket both coming back from the brink of death. Seems relevant to James Gunn's directorial journey.
High evolutionary is a metaphor for marvel, the animals were the Russos n favereu n Gunn was rocket, the one guy with free thought getting away with his chosen family, escaping the homogenizer
One thing I do love about the mix of quip/humour & seriousness in this is, compared to other MCU, when it's time to fight, they are actually savage, serious, and deadly, and then afterward they joke. Other MCU movie, I hate when they throw jokes left & right while fighting bad guys.
I felt the same way about the needledrops in this one. In the other two, the use of music seemed more natural - I think of Vol. 1 when they're flying into Knowhere. "Moonage Daydream" is already quietly playing in the background, and as they approach and fly through the city, they dial up the volume and let the music dominate the sound as you take in the visuals. There was much more switching between diegetic to non-diegetic music. And music was something that the characters used to relate to and understand each other, and how Peter expressed himself. In Vol. 3 they really felt more like Needledrops™. They were playing the song just to play the song - not as seemless or as tied to the story as it was in the other two volumes. This was really my ONLY complaint about the movie, I really loved it.
I think the only exceptions to this would be the first song, the second to last song and the song in the first after credits scene. Creep by Raidohead fits Rocket as a character so perfectly. It fits so well with his alienation and his perception of himself as some imperfect monster due to what was done to him by the High Evolutionary. Plus it fits the defeated and downbeat mood of the team, and particularly quill, after the loss of their gamora, and quill’s spiral into a drunken stooper. Dog days are over by Florence + The Machine, meanwhile, is perfect for the ending. It represents the trauma all of the characters have been through and how they’re finally healing from it. And it matches the cathartic yet bittersweet feeling of seeing the classic team go their separate ways and onto new, better things. I also don’t think it’s a coincidence that Dog Days is the first song in these soundtracks to be from the 2000s and not the 70s, 80s or 90s. It symbolises the start of a new era for the guardians team, and a new era for leaving members like Quill, Drax, Gamora and Mantis. Come and get your love, admittedly isn’t as deep as the other two, but it was not only a nice callback to the first film, but hearing new leader rocket play one of the first songs played by old team leader Starlord to the new guardians team was a great coming full circle moment.
I took my Dad to watch this and he had the most Dad-like criticism. I brought up the part when Rocket's friends get killed and his response was "first of all I don't understand why he's kept them around for so long because in comparison to other technology in these Marvel films they look like shit so I'd be embarrassed. I could've done a better job on that Walrus - I'd have given it 4 wheels for a start".
Really think about this.... At the beginning Drax says he wants to "kill everyone" and Star Lord says "we kill no one" Drax says "we'll kill one guy, one really pathetic guy with no friends", which Star Lord says is "just making it sad.." Okay? Later Quill sees what the High Evolutionary did to Rocket and he says "Kill 'em all" But Groot, who's proxy for Rocket's moral compass, as his best friend, saves Adam Warlock because "Everyone deserves a second chance." Partially exemplified in Rocket's decision not to kill the High Evolutionary (happens to be one really pathetic guy with no friends) and unlike Peter, Rocket didn't see what he did, he experienced it, it was done to him, and he still showed mercy. James Gunn has now said repeatedly that Rocket Raccoon is the stealth protagonist of the series. All that is to say the whole point of that line, in a way, is that Rocket is more of a hero than Star Lord is.
i imagine it’s hard for gunn to get as good of needle drops as that first guardians movie because his whole schtick has been completely aped. i don’t think anyone’s done it as well as him but i imagine it’s hard to keep doing it fresh when everyone’s trying to do your thing
To be fair, Guardians 2 was petering on that excessively schlocky goofiness so I'm glad he kinda put some more emphasis on a darker tone for 3. At least it didn't go to wacky and end up being like Love and Thunder.
I think its funny how the original Suicide Squad felt (imo) like it was trying to do similar stuff as GoG, then for the sequel they just got him to direct it lol
@@mchikos suicide squad was made with a light influence by guardians (guardians success was the whole reason suicide squad was greenlit), but after the bohemian rhapsody trailer came out audiences loved that. so they had the trailerhouse do a new cut of suicide squad, test audiences didn’t really like it much better than the ayer cut, so the studio mushed them together and that’s what we got. Just thought I’d let anyone who really isn’t listening to the whole podcast that it’s genuinely hilarious. I don’t think I’ve ever finished one of there episodes feeling like I hadn’t made a good investment with my time. Keep up the good work James and Maso
I have to disagree with Star Lord being dumbed down in Infinity War. It was his plan that helped incapacitate Thanos on Titan. He and the Guardians were able to hold their own against three of the strongest Avengers. As for his outburst, it was pretty in character. He is the same guy who did not hesitate a moment to blast his father to pieces when he came to know about the cancer-her-head thing.
Honestly, he’s always been a character who acts on emotion, not rationally- I mean he knocked a guy clean out for touching his Walkman in the first one.
@@mrsundaymovies incorrect. Strange allowed Star Lord to devise the plan because this was part of the 1 in 14, 000,605 possibility in which Thanos was eventually defeated. Not to be all umm actually…this detail just helps to show that Quill is a surprisingly creative tactician, likely a result of being an earth kid in space who survives to adulthood.
Star Lord is an expert at fighting villains stronger than him. He beat Ronan with the Power Stone and Ego the Living Planet. Dr Strange tricks Dormammu with the Time Stone, but he can’t use that since it’s what Thanos wants. Iron Man never fought anyone who was significantly more powerful than him. Thor, Hulk, Wanda and Vision were there to fight Ultron.
Honestly I'm kind of sad that Thor wasn't in this movie. I would have loved to see how James Gunn handled Thor. I feel like that would have been really interesting and given the character a different look than we've seen for him recently.
I thought it would be the plot of Thor 4, with him teaming up with the Guardians (since Gunn and Waititi are kind of chummy), and the whole movie was just that first 20 minutes, with him just figuring his shit out on adventures. It would also give us a preview of the new status quo, like Rocket being the only Guardian that wasn't snapped, and Nebula joining the team after Endgame. Pick up that thread of Peter being overshadowed by Thor's power (but way more competent otherwise). Thor: Asgardian of the Galaxy! It was right there!
As much as I would love Thor in the film I think he would have totally undermined Adam Warlock's presence in his fight scene on Knowhere. Like the Guardians were just strong enough together to get rid of him momentarily. I could see Thor just destroying Adam.
They should've had the guardians tag along through the entirety of thor 4 then at the end he parts ways with them to take care of that child heck if you want that could've helped set up drax wanting to in some way be a father again
Will Poulter did well as Adam Warlock and I’d like to see more of him. He has good range. On the way home from the theater I casually say to my husband “you know that was the awkward kid from ‘We’re the Millers’ right?” and he looked at me like I had 3 heads.
I like a good team fight too. Honor Amongst Thieve was great. (You need to talk about that movie!) GOTG 3 had some good team moments. Of what I've seen of James Gunn he has two styles or variations. There is his rated R I can do whatever I want style. And his PG13 I guess I should dial it back a bit style. One does not feel like a knock off of the other. His R stuff is hilarious, but often a little too crass. His PG13 stuff seems more heartfelt, a little schmaltzy, but ultimately more memorable for me. He is a great film maker in my book. That said, I haven't seen anything that feels like a Superman movie, and it might be that he hasn't done one yet, and it's gonna require the right actor. I'm skeptical.
Exactly I'm not sure he can pull off a superman. I'm excited to see what he comes up with regardless. I will say though he's really good at making characters feel very human which superman should feel like. Not like some God diety.
I understand the whiplash that many felt with this film, but I loved the ride. Moments to laugh or cheer on the team in between the animal torture horror flick. Also, there’s some *messed up* stuff aside from the animal cruelty that really surprises me that it made it into the film. Shocking, heart pounding, and emotional. Loved it.
Loved the movie. Cried... a lot! Rocket has always been my favorite so this movie really tore my heart out. And the built up relationships between all the Guardians was great to see and very emotional too. My only criticism would be the same as yours, how the music at times came in a bit strong and jarringly. Even commented with my friends as we came out of the theater. But I didn't make the connection with the Zune and how it was probably emulating the use of it. Definitely an incredible send-off to Gunn's GotG.
I agree with pretty much everything y'all said in this one. Really enjoyed the movie, but I agree that the music did not seem as seamlessly integrated into the scenes and movie as a whole as the two prior films. My main bone I have to pick is that I was so excited that they included We Care a Lot by Faith No More, I feel like it's the most Guardians of the Galaxy song that I can think of out of all the songs ever sang, but they used it at a really weird time that didn't seem fitting and they ended the song right before they said the line "we're out to save the world", which I thought was a weird choice. Other than that, loved the movie.
It is currently 2026 in the MCU. Avengers: Endgame takes place in 2023. Avengers: Infinity War took place in 2018 and Endgame did a five year time jump. Then Spiderman: Far From Home starts in the summer of 2024 and Spiderman: No way Home picks up at the end of summer in 2024. Then Spiderman NWH ends in Christmas of 2025 and the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special takes place at the end of Spiderman NWH. And then this movie happens lol
Best Marvel trilogy, you can feel the artistic vision and love for these characters throughout the entire time. Loved this movie, it has some underused stuff, but didnt care, it was fantastic.
⚠️ SPOILIES ⚠️ I wish we could’ve seen Rockets’ mental relent once the team told him they knew everything he had been bottling up his whole life. He locked those times away but everyone saw everything, so it would’ve been nice to see him come to terms and take that weight off his shoulders in the end!
I loved that they included the Walrus character because Rocket was named from a Beatles song ("Rocky Racoon") and his friend the walrus was inspired by "I Am the Walrus" also by the Beatles. Funny he was speaking in a British accent although he lived in deep space and probably NEVER was on Earth.
The High Evolutionary captures the animals he used for his experiments from various planets. I mean, the raccoons are from Earth. So I suppose that the Walrus was in a British zoo or something before he was captured and experimented on.
@@reymondiscool Yeah in the comics Counter Earth was right on the other side of the sun so it made (a little) more sense have Earth animals on a planet like that but of course in the movie they stuck him millions of light years away for some reason.
I cried so much during this movie. At the beginning of the Rocket flashbacks where he's thrown into the cage and shaking, having seen real footage of animals suffering and shaking like that, it was such an agonising watch even if it wasn't for long. I also laughed so much, I found it organically loads more funny than volume 2. Best movie ever!
I feel like the music is thematic with the theme of moving forward from your past so even though I agree it was all over the place the fact that it visibly shows rocket moving to the 2000s after confronting his past just shows Gunns intent
That "kill everybody" scene they gunned down a room full of scientists. That was kind of brutal. I didnt see anyone shooting back. I might have missed it with them rotating the camera around Peter and Groot but they seemed unarmed to me.
At the start of the movie when they were in the meet planet thing, Starlord didnt want to kill anyone, he explicitly avoided it. It was only after he saw what they’d done to rocket that he went “fuck these guys” and decided they all could go to hell and i love that
As a biomed scientist myself, no one who would take a job where they do things like that deserve to live. Those creatures are clearly sentient and what they did was torture and murder. I would argue that a hired goon holding a gun deserves to die much less.
@@AuspexAO I agree, especially as near the end when the second in command attempted to take control of the ship, not to stop what the High Evolutionary's mission, but to retreat and presumably continue their work.
I realised an issue with the story, the high evolutionary talks about how the only being he has made that knows true invention is rocket, but he also created the golden species who created Adam worlock who is in turn a feat of true invention.
I loved the way that this movie was straight up about saving Rocket. They've done the galaxy stuff a few times now, and this time one of their friends needs help. No person or distraction is going to get between them and saving their friend. You've even got the entire planet filled with people that was set to blow up, and I was thinking that they'd save the planet and Rocket in just the nick of time, like most other Marvel movies. But they just kinda don't care. All of the Guardians saw the planet about to explode and said, "We better leave, sorry guys" and didn't once look back. Great stuff
I wasn't really too thrilled the initial trailer of this movie, but man after seeing it, its really a good movie. Rockets backstory was fantastic and seeing what happened to his friends was very sad. I feel like they also handled every other cast member pretty well, glad to see that Mantis had more to say and I really like Nebula new arm and how in her first fight she kinda seemed like Iron man a bit. Drax is fantastic as usual, along with Peter and Groot who had some really cool moments as well. I'm glad there all pretty confident in this movie and I think they handled Gamora's situation pretty well. By far my favorite Guardians of the Galaxy movie.
The mcu has actually done exceptionally well if you take into consideration it basically had to rebuild after endgame, had main actors leave and pass away. The problem is the general public only remembers the highs of infinity war and endgame and not the lows or ok movies from ohase 1-3. MCU has always been 60% good 20% exceptional 20% meh. Phasr 4/5 is no different. Its the likable characters and there interactions that make the whole thing work.
Iron Man 2 is objectively a more developed movie than Endgame, because Endgame was basically a victory lap full of chopped up fan service. Where they went wrong was trying to continue franchises like Thor, Doctor Strange, Ant Man, and Captain America coming out of Endgame. The earth based universe needed to reset and build up from scratch using characters like Shang-Chi, the Fantastic Four, and maybe even a Daredevil or someone like that.
I can’t wait for Superman Legacy. It will be the best Superman movie since the original with Christopher Reeve. Guardians 3 is the best Marvel movie since Endgame and a wonderful send off to the team.
Yeah, focusing on an era of music would have probably been a better choice. The 90s to 2000 would have been great. They could have dropped "Two Princes" by the Spin Doctors. That was like a song editors would put in every movie trailer from the 90s.
Hey guys, love everything y’all do. But I DID just wanna clarify something from the podcast I was listening to this morning. You guys stated that 49% of Hollywood Writers are getting paid minimum wage, but they are actually getting paid minimum STANDARD pay which is set forth by the WGA and is approximately 80k per show/movie. Minimum wage is something totally different and is $15 an hour (in California) and is what teenagers are paid for working at fast food places lol no writers are getting paid minimum wage. When I heard that this morning I nearly fell over till I realized what the mix-up was 😂
The end credit scene should have been James Gunn walking out into the otter heaven set, looking at the camera, saying “it’s okay, it’s over, you don’t have to watch all the Disney Plus series anymore, it’s okay to move on. Agatha House Of Harkness and SheHulk Season 2 don’t matter it’s okay to let go”
@@jessemoynan4332 cool but why all the negativity on the TV shows when marvel has proven they can do it? It's funny because here in Spain there's no rule with the swearing in movies and if you see this movie in the Spanish dubbed version they easily drop the F bomb 10 times.
After the first trailer I avoided it, these days they always show way too much in previews so I avoid them for anything I'm actually excited for. Glad I did, I went back and looked after I saw it the other day, jeez they showed so much that I'm glad I saw in theatre first. Awesome movie, seriously heart wrenching stuff with Rocket's backstory, snuck up on me.
Kinda felt like this was a dip of the toe into some deadpool style movie, it was a little more violet, the "gore" with the high evolutionary's face and death of his lacky. That and rocket basically going to the same afterlife deadpool went to. This was by far the best release marvel's had in a long while.
Y’all should really give the Eidos Guardians game a try. It has the tone and vibe of the Gunn movies but has some of the best writing in any game. Pitch perfect song choices unlike 3.
loved this movie! one thing i didn't like that stood out was nebula saying racoons torture was worse than hers. HOW?! her "father" replaced almost every part of her body. that's even more horrific than what rocket went through. not to mention it was her father figure that did it. it's just such a disservice to the character imo.
we don’t really know what else rocket went through, i feel like having nebula say that is supposed to put rocket’s torture into perspective without explicitly showing us
Masons point about the Antman movies, how part of the fun is him changing sizes in the real world, that's very true and not something I had even thought about before, good observation.
That brings up a total head scratcher…..how big did Antman actually grow?! It works very well in the real world….but in the quantum realm he is still infinitesimally small and showed him as giANTman….but….not really Also, yes…the music in GotG3 wasn’t handled as skilfully as in previous movies. It was very much *SMASH* neeeeeext SOOOONG
Easily the best entry in the MCU since No Way Home for me. Very impressed with how despite there being so many characters, they each got a decent amount of development. And I loved that Gunn resisted the urge to have Quill and Gamora get back together. It would be too weird if they did given that Gamora's had a different experience, and I think sets a good example for real-life break ups. It's amazing how good a story you can tell when you're not trying to feed in to the larger MCU narrative. More like this, please Marvel! I do feel a little cheated that nobody died. Time after time the trailers are intimating real tragedies will occur, but then the final movie is ultimately kinda toothless. 30+ films, and so few of them have felt like there were real stakes involved, but I agree that it doesn't feel quite so jarring in Vol. 3 because it was fitting.
I love the very subtle gag of Mantis always landing on her head. I can’t be the only one that saw that.

Lmao I made the same joke in the podcast comments
@@nickszune7196 I had to watch it a second time to realize he activated his gravity boots from the beginning of the movie. That's when I had the "ohhhh ok that's why" moment.
Agreed I thought that was awesome. It’s such a simple solution to an otherwise OP power, and without it the High Evolutionary has nothing on Rocket. Plus it’s just cool that Rocket is making his own gravity boots. Also it reminds me of Ratchet and Clank lol, which is great because Iron Man calls Rocket “Ratchet” in Endgame.
probably also a call back to their prison escape in volume 1.
Cliched.
I really liked seeing a little special bond between Rocket and Nebula since they were the only two to survive the Snap. It was a really nice touch.
Me too that's a fun little thing
I moment i think I noticed is in the beginning Nebula seems to know a little bit more about Rocket then Peter does (and everyone else) which makes sense because they were the only two who didn’t get snapped away for 5 years, and spent that time serving on black widow’s council of heroes
That also explains why Nebula is the first person Rocket asks about when he wakes up
she also mention's rocket helped upgrade her body. they've both been through horrific torture and experimentation so they have a lot in common.
That's a really interesting observation

Agreed. This should have been mentioned in the review. Peter is going back to his Earth family and starting to heal. But it's also just dealing with an old man who's everyday life is being grouchy about his neighbors.
It.. does say he will return though..
To be fair, the post-credits scene is *usually* just a joke. It’s the mid-credits scene that teases a future thing, and this movie did that too.

Pretty sure there's more than 14 million outcomes to a fight and strange knows that, so he's still hoping for the best until he has no choice.
@@mrsundaymovies From Peter’s point of view his plan would have worked if he hadn’t lost his shit on Thanos. He doesn’t know that only 1 outcome could work because of the time keepers. We also don’t know what Strange’s definition of winning is.

@@Sbensonn nah, leaving important space stuff while in space is stupid. While I think Peter is the dumbest MCU character I'm still going to have to chalk this one up as a plot hole.

He's left in an unstable and reflexively immature state as he has to grapple with the fact that he made the choice to kill the woman he loved to save the universe, and acted on that choice, but the universe wasn't saved, and the only hope left for Starlord was that Gamora was still alive.
All that hope comes crashing down in a single moment. And he lashes out in anger. Unwittingly dooming everyone.

Damn, he’s trying to brainwash us
High evolutionary is a metaphor for marvel, the animals were the Russos n favereu n Gunn was rocket, the one guy with free thought getting away with his chosen family, escaping the homogenizer
One thing I do love about the mix of quip/humour & seriousness in this is, compared to other MCU, when it's time to fight, they are actually savage, serious, and deadly, and then afterward they joke. Other MCU movie, I hate when they throw jokes left & right while fighting bad guys.
Go watch gotg2 again kiddo. That’s literally the worst offender for undercutting fighting with ‘jokes’
The High Evolutionary reminded me of Professor Pyg and made me really excited for Gunn's take on DC villains going forward
I **loved** “Kill ‘em all.” Makes Star Lord such a badass. And you agree with it and cheer it on because they’re up against some real shitbags.
Really think about this....
At the beginning Drax says he wants to "kill everyone" and Star Lord says "we kill no one" Drax says "we'll kill one guy, one really pathetic guy with no friends", which Star Lord says is "just making it sad.." Okay?
Later Quill sees what the High Evolutionary did to Rocket and he says "Kill 'em all"
But Groot, who's proxy for Rocket's moral compass, as his best friend, saves Adam Warlock because "Everyone deserves a second chance." Partially exemplified in Rocket's decision not to kill the High Evolutionary (happens to be one really pathetic guy with no friends) and unlike Peter, Rocket didn't see what he did, he experienced it, it was done to him, and he still showed mercy.

Strange came up with the plan, he just took credit
Honestly, he’s always been a character who acts on emotion, not rationally- I mean he knocked a guy clean out for touching his Walkman in the first one.
@@mrsundaymovies Tbh, I don't remember much about that scene to argue further, so fair enough.
Honestly I'm kind of sad that Thor wasn't in this movie. I would have loved to see how James Gunn handled Thor. I feel like that would have been really interesting and given the character a different look than we've seen for him recently.
No that would be terrible as thor is not a guardians character and would feel like he is taking the spotlight of the actual characters of this series
He wouldn't of handled Thor at all.

You watched this in a cinema Kelly. Not a theatre.
I enjoyed Vol 3. I don't care if they make anymore movies

I took Groot speaking english at the end as the audience being so close to the characters at the end that we can actually understand him now
I understand the whiplash that many felt with this film, but I loved the ride.
I don't think Spiderman NWH takes place over 18 months does it?
cosmo the space dog made the entire film worth watching, everything else was just a nice bonus
Apart from "Creep", "Dog days are over" at the end is also a pretty great choice.

I’ve never come closer to crying in a movie. And I’ve never been more excited for what Gunn is doing with DC.

This does not feel like an echo of a previous phase AT ALL
It feels so far ahead in this genre that it feels like a whole new era
I feel like the music is thematic with the theme of moving forward from your past so even though I agree it was all over the place the fact that it visibly shows rocket moving to the 2000s after confronting his past just shows Gunns intent
That "kill everybody" scene they gunned down a room full of scientists. That was kind of brutal. I didnt see anyone shooting back. I might have missed it with them rotating the camera around Peter and Groot but they seemed unarmed to me.
They let a whole planet die lol I’d say Quill was justified in a cartoon morality sense since this is fictional
Pretty sure there were like three scientists in that room and the rest had blasters. Plus the scientists had been abusing animals for years.
Great stuff
The animals did get a comment "do you feel bad for them" and rocket responds "Yeah but these people can't defend themselves so we got to do it."
My favourite mcu movie ever. My expectations were super high but they were still surpassed
Bro The Mowgli’s San Francisco (2012) playing for 5 seconds in the ship was crazy
Yeah, Incredible Hulk and Iron Man 2 didn't get the best reviews at the time.
Iron Man 2 is objectively a more developed movie than Endgame, because Endgame was basically a victory lap full of chopped up fan service. Where they went wrong was trying to continue franchises like Thor, Doctor Strange, Ant Man, and Captain America coming out of Endgame. The earth based universe needed to reset and build up from scratch using characters like Shang-Chi, the Fantastic Four, and maybe even a Daredevil or someone like that.
don’t forget the best “team gets together to kick the shit out of the villain” scene- that fax machine in Office Space
Peter Quill to Ego "im gonna make some weird shit!". Peter Quill to High Evolutionary :HOW DARE YOU MAKE SOME WEIRD SHIT?". 😅😅😅
You guys didn’t really touch on the second post-credit. I was curious about your thoughts on that.
We've got a video coming out in a couple of days that will cover it
@@mrsundaymovies oh will it, mr munday sovies? will it over it?
@samsawyer44 People make mistakes... Get cover it.
I don't know what you're talking about. Everything is fine you must have misread what I said
@@mrsundaymovies you've made me look a fool
Kinda wanna set James and Mason's vocal rendition of "In the meantime" as my text alert
When I heard that this morning I nearly fell over till I realized what the mix-up was 😂
The end credit scene should have been James Gunn walking out into the otter heaven set, looking at the camera, saying
“it’s okay, it’s over, you don’t have to watch all the Disney Plus series anymore, it’s okay to move on. Agatha House Of Harkness and SheHulk Season 2 don’t matter it’s okay to let go”
The fact u need someone to tell u not to watch them shows how insecure u are.
Are we just going to forget how great Wandavision and FatWS was?
@@fkr9032 you can keep watching no one is stopping you 🫠
@@jessemoynan4332 cool but why all the negativity on the TV shows when marvel has proven they can do it? Like yeah She Hulk was doodoo feces and Ms Marvel was definitely for a specific target audience that kinda alienates the casual audience.. But that doesn't mean future shows will suck ass because they've had misses
Wait She-Hulk is going to have a season 2?
love the king crimson/Adrian bellew callout at the end
Technically groot has the first f bomb. It's translated by rocket as frisking but he also says he doesn't use the word frikkin
2:06 As a fan of animal cruelty, I certainly won't be missing this fine film
What happened to star-Lords mask? It was all I could think about when he nearly froze to death in space
My dad brought this up too. Also what about his rocket boots?
Adam disintegrated a poor ravenger 💀
Had to show him he meant business 😂🤷♂️
@@theguardian2428 What more business could they have shown him?
It's funny because here in Spain there's no rule with the swearing in movies and if you see this movie in the Spanish dubbed version they easily drop the F bomb 10 times.
After the first trailer I avoided it, these days they always show way too much in previews so I avoid them for anything I'm actually excited for. Glad I did, I went back and looked after I saw it the other day, jeez they showed so much that I'm glad I saw in theatre first. Awesome movie, seriously heart wrenching stuff with Rocket's backstory, snuck up on me.
If I know I'm going to see something no matter what someone says I absolutely won't watch the trailer.
HOW?! her "father" replaced almost every part of her body. that's even more horrific than what rocket went through. not to mention it was her father figure that did it. it's just such a disservice to the character imo.
we don’t really know what else rocket went through, i feel like having nebula say that is supposed to put rocket’s torture into perspective without explicitly showing us
Absolutely LOVED this movie. The humor hit, the emotion hit, the story hit. It all worked.
Masons point about the Antman movies, how part of the fun is him changing sizes in the real world, that's very true and not something I had even thought about before, good observation.
That brings up a total head scratcher…..how big did Antman actually grow?! It works very well in the real world….but in the quantum realm he is still infinitesimally small and showed him as giANTman….but….not really
Also, yes…the music in GotG3 wasn’t handled as skilfully as in previous movies. It was very much *SMASH* neeeeeext SOOOONG
i love this movie it was really awesome
What a divisive title! :o
