Though a bit earlier than Liszt's beautiful vision of the Hugo poem, I find Franck's composition even more evocative and inspiring.

Is there any possiblity that Liszt heard this work (assuming it was ever played) and was thus inspired to write on the same subject? Liszt was known to have actually met Franck and admired him as an organist. Franck had the misfortune to have jumped out of one frying pan and into another - he escaped a domineering father only to marry a woman who went from being an early inspiration to him to becoming a complete and utter nag. It's little wonder that Franck took so long to find his way as a composer.

@@brandtbecker1810I've never read anything to suggest that Liszt took inspiration from Franck in this regard. However, I'm not an authority on either of them, so I honestly don't know.

@@brandtbecker1810 Liszt had no inspiration from Franck's version; it was not published and performed until the 1980's

I can't understand what makes this piece so mesmerizing and transcendental? And so unknown?

Liszt wrote a tone poem on the same topic. For sure, his orchestration is more brillant. But is it more profound?

This piece is a real curiosity and basically unknown, though I can see why. It's slow and fairly gloomy. Liszt's version on the other hand is far more interesting and varied in atmosphere and orchestration. Nothing really stands out here. It didn't make much of an impression on me but I might give it another shot in the future.
