Well I usually don't to be honest. Before coming out publicly I was someone who held my cards very close to my chest. I dealt with emotions and problems on my own without asking for help and did not share much when it came to my feelings. Since that experience, I have been a lot more forthcoming with sharing and it has helped me immensely! In sharing our journey we thought it very important to be completely transparent if we really hoped to help anyone else who may be going through some of the same things. We really do both feel so blessed to have what we have and really hope that everyone could have even a taste of that in their lifetime because love and acceptance is something for everyone. Going forward with plans we think at this point that after the process we are currently navigating has come through (too late in our eyes to change the process and start over now) that we would definitely do a much smaller undertaking as we are just anxious to get married lol. Alec... you are too cute... even if got emotional... when I married my wife, we did through the court house.... decide what a wedding cost, is a house down payment, the importance was we knew we were together for the long haul & know what we wanted, both were over 50 years of age.. As you may recall I was with my partner for 23 years before he passed away last fall. He was an out proud black man, community leader, musician, teacher and ordained clergy. While on the other hand I am a white, veteran, and former civil servant and church deacon. We both believed (for different reasons) that our union was as much spiritually preordained. We never had an argument in 23 years. We did have discussions to better understand differing opinions. By all I’ve seen you two make a great couple. Just be sure to keep that servant’s heart to please each other, keep open communication with each other and remember to keep a safe space for you (as a couple) where you can retreat together from friends, family, work and the world.

This was beautiful! I too have experienced the same thing being with someone who was closeted and i was not at all. Lasted for 8 years though but those were 8 tough years! I learned a lot though so I wouldn’t trade those experiences cause I’ve grown.

Vulnerability, emotional availability...this is how you know that you have a real relationship. When both parties find each other a safe space and you are aligned in every way...RUN, don't walk to that aisle. It doesn't take years to determine if a person is right for you. Once you know that your and your person align in the most important things what's the holdup. I feel that people who drag taking the next step for an indefinite amount of time more times than not are not sure that their partner is the right choice. WOW!! A good friend of mine suggested that I check out your story and watch a few! Now I truly understand why...again I say WOW!! What you are experiencing reminds me SO MUCH of what my life is evolving into. I (FINALLY) met the man whose heart resonated with mine a little over a year ago. He is from Haiti but has been living in the Dominican Republic for a little over 20 years. We also met online, we also chatted for over a month "every day" before we met in person, when I finally met him in person, he surpassed every "red flag" I had on my list (oh hell yeah, I had some, 🚩LOL,) simply by being the man of sincerity and integrity that he is. Beyond the fact that he is "my flavor" and SO beautiful in my eyes, once we met face to face I KNEW he was the kindred spirit that my heart had been seeking. For both of us, the feeling was mutual. We celebrated one year as a couple a few weeks ago, and our relationship continues to flourish as it remains organic, peaceful, adventurous, humorous, and delightfully full of passion! YES, I am also a Dad, as a matter of fact, I am a father of three! They are ALL young adults now and all the "courageous conversations" about who I am and what it took in order for me to be true to myself have been had. My oldest son said to me, "Dad, the people who matter REALLY love you! ...and the people who don't really love you, don't REALLY matter!" I took that to heart as he told me how proud he was of me for finding my truth and not being afraid to walk in it! OH....I forgot to mention, I AM ALSO A FLIGHT ATTENDANT! LOL ✈ I decided to move to the DR (yes I commute to work from here somewhat easily) and decided to give my relationship a chance from this vantage point! I also desire to marry this amazing man that my journey has been blessed with! I have not proposed yet, but (still in disbelief every time I say it out loud😱)...I plan to! Aware that this "immigration thing" has its challenges, my hope is for us to relocate to the United States by early next year. I never gave up on knowing that happiness was possible, and I am just grateful to the universe to be experiencing it within my journey on this planet. You both inspire me, thank you so much for continuing to share your journey and for allowing me to share just a bit of mine! If you ever make it to Santo Domingo, let me know...if you've never been, it's a big, bustling city, but there's a lot here to do and discover! But before he came to america, he was chased and taunted by students and teachers calling Bantee boy . And that was in the 80’s . I share that to say you fight for citizenship and you will always hold dear to your culture, yet to thine onself be true ! You have to be who God made you to be ! Well I usually don't to be honest. Before coming out publicly I was someone who held my cards very close to my chest. I dealt with emotions and problems on my own without asking for help and did not share much when it came to my feelings. Since that experience, I have been a lot more forthcoming with sharing and it has helped me immensely! In sharing our journey we thought it very important to be completely transparent if we really hoped to help anyone else who may be going through some of the same things. We really do both feel so blessed to have what we have and really hope that everyone could have even a taste of that in their lifetime because love and acceptance is something for everyone.
Going forward with plans we think at this point that after the process we are currently navigating has come through (too late in our eyes to change the process and start over now) that we would definitely do a much smaller undertaking as we are just anxious to get married lol. Alec... you are too cute... even if got emotional... when I married my wife, we did through the court house.... decide what a wedding cost, is a house down payment, the importance was we knew we were together for the long haul & know what we wanted, both were over 50 years of age.. May 1, is our 7th year together, August 17 is our 5th year married and neither of u still regret anything

As you may recall I was with my partner for 23 years before he passed away last fall. He was an out proud black man, community leader, musician, teacher and ordained clergy. While on the other hand I am a white, veteran, and former civil servant and church deacon. We both believed (for different reasons) that our union was as much spiritually preordained. We never had an argument in 23 years. We did have discussions to better understand differing opinions.
By all I’ve seen you two make a great couple. Just be sure to keep that servant’s heart to please each other, keep open communication with each other and remember to keep a safe space for you (as a couple) where you can retreat together from friends, family, work and the world.

This was beautiful! I too have experienced the same thing being with someone who was closeted and i was not at all. Lasted for 8 years though but those were 8 tough years! I learned a lot though so I wouldn’t trade those experiences cause I’ve grown.

However, love really does allow us to look past certain things that people outside looking in probably couldn’t fathom. I definitely don’t regret my past experiences as I think other than making me learn what I like and don’t like, it has also taught me a lot of empathy and being more intentional in so many avenues of my life. Vulnerability, emotional availability...this is how you know that you have a real relationship. When both parties find each other a safe space and you are aligned in every way...RUN, don't walk to that aisle. It doesn't take years to determine if a person is right for you. Once you know that your and your person align in the most important things what's the holdup. I feel that people who drag taking the next step for an indefinite amount of time more times than not are not sure that their partner is the right choice. It took you guys going through the muck and sucky relationships to guide you to this one. Wishing you all the best!
Sidenote: Alec is truly a Scorpio. We are vaults when it comes to record keeping. Super detailed oriented and observant. Even though we may say something at the moment, trust and believe it doesn't mean we aren't keeping track. It'll take one straw to break that poor camel's back and we are ripping you for everything that we felt slighted against. Like Alec, I've gotten better in letting people know at that time how I'm feeling so I don't harbor resentment nor do I explode for things that happened some time ago.
We connected with everything you said! Needless to say we did take that leap as we are now 3 months happily married! We know everyone's journey may be different but we truly felt from the beginning that this relationship would be the one for the long haul for us.

I’m so happy to hear that you guys check in the way that you do. It’s really important for a healthy relationship so no one feels things are taken for granted. And also, this is something that needs to continue always. You shouldn’t allow time together, no matter how long, be the thing to simply say “oh well, he knows” and never discuss it together. Don’t give things the chance for one to fly off the handle in anger. This will only allow bitterness to grow.
We certainly think it's super important Calvin. We always try to do special things for each other, constantly try to date even though we know we are committed, always check in with each other from time to time, and also know when it's important to give the other person a little space too if needed. WOW!! A good friend of mine suggested that I check out your story and watch a few! Now I truly understand why...again I say WOW!! What you are experiencing reminds me SO MUCH of what my life is evolving into. I (FINALLY) met the man whose heart resonated with mine a little over a year ago. He is from Haiti but has been living in the Dominican Republic for a little over 20 years. We also met online, we also chatted for over a month "every day" before we met in person, when I finally met him in person, he surpassed every "red flag" I had on my list (oh hell yeah, I had some, 🚩LOL,) simply by being the man of sincerity and integrity that he is. Beyond the fact that he is "my flavor" and SO beautiful in my eyes, once we met face to face I KNEW he was the kindred spirit that my heart had been seeking. For both of us, the feeling was mutual. We celebrated one year as a couple a few weeks ago, and our relationship continues to flourish as it remains organic, peaceful, adventurous, humorous, and delightfully full of passion! YES, I am also a Dad, as a matter of fact, I am a father of three! They are ALL young adults now and all the "courageous conversations" about who I am and what it took in order for me to be true to myself have been had. My oldest son said to me, "Dad, the people who matter REALLY love you! ...and the people who don't really love you, don't REALLY matter!" I took that to heart as he told me how proud he was of me for finding my truth and not being afraid to walk in it! OH....I forgot to mention, I AM ALSO A FLIGHT ATTENDANT! LOL ✈ I decided to move to the DR (yes I commute to work from here somewhat easily) and decided to give my relationship a chance from this vantage point! I also desire to marry this amazing man that my journey has been blessed with! I have not proposed yet, but (still in disbelief every time I say it out loud😱)...I plan to! Aware that this "immigration thing" has its challenges, my hope is for us to relocate to the United States by early next year. I never gave up on knowing that happiness was possible, and I am just grateful to the universe to be experiencing it within my journey on this planet. You both inspire me, thank you so much for continuing to share your journey and for allowing me to share just a bit of mine! If you ever make it to Santo Domingo, let me know...if you've never been, it's a big, bustling city, but there's a lot here to do and discover! Perhaps the universe will allow us to cross paths one day and bear witness to our collective happiness! ...continued love and blessings to you both!
