I tried it on an anime character but after setting the curves and inverting ,like you did my character just vanishes is it due to background the background is yellowish and it inflicts on body a reply may help! Even avoiding inverting does not help much

1:40 ALT+CLICK (Klijk). I had the issue with it.
Solution is first to HOLD ALT and click on the white mask. There are two Alt on my keyboard the Alt Gr did not work but just Alt did the magic and the image was placed in the mask area. Ah, such a Yahoo! feeling after some time of frustration. :)

Great, I love it but I have a question, as you do to shrink the image at the same time just by a corner I do not know if I understand?? Bone to shrink it from all the corners at the same time instead of manually shrinking it in all the corners...
I'm still a newbie, maybe in the future I can explain better..
press ctrl + t than shrink the image with hold shift + alt + drag . sorry my bad english, i hope you can understand.

nice but you made it too much complicated
im using photoshop cc. my problem is that, o cannot place the copied black and white image right inside the mask of the watercolor. when i am hitting paste in place, the copied image will be placed on top of the layer, making it a new layer and not being added as mask. what shall i do?
I was having the same problem, and realized I skipped a detail - hit ALT+Click on the white/mask, then paste in place.
just ctrl + v

Just in case some people like me who had their 'copy merged' greyed out, the reason was that I missed the step of Select -> Select All. The layer has to be selected all, not just clicked on, for the Copy Merged option to be active.

This really isn't so much a watercolor effect tutorial as a layer mask tutorial. The watercolor aspect comes solely from the background image. Any texture could be used for an alternate effect.
