Is there an alternative for the German floor, that will still serve the same purpose, most especially for a Duplex...

The alternative would be location specific. But be mindful of cost because some of the alternatives might be more expensive eg. Prestressed r.c. slabs and hollow core concrete slab which would checkmate capillary action.
