    I was raised in a house without soda or sugary drinks other than one glass of fruit juice at breakfast (we were not allowed to drink anything but water and milk other than that). I used to hate the entire concept of sparkling water. I thought it just created waste and costs money. I also hate the taste. But, then I got married, and my husband really struggles with taking in liquid calories, and is constantly dehydrated. This year, as part of his goal to lose weight he has started drinking sparkling water and now I see the value. He is hydrating without drinking soda, juice or sugary sports drinks.

      I had the same problem and I gave up all my soda and Im able to keep down and enjoy drinking the sparkling water - I lost 25pounds from giving up sugar drinks like sodas and now all I drink is Sparkling Ice Black Raspberry Water

      One other thing you can do with those sparkling waters is to add lemonade. You get a refreshing, sparkly drink at half the calories of a glass of straight-up lemonade. It's one of my favorite summer drinks. (You can also do this with hard seltzers if you're looking for a light cocktail, btw.)

      One of my favorite beverages is soda water with cocktail bitters. Angostura adds a nice baking spice aroma and flavor, and orange bitters add a citrusy vibe. Other bitters can add other flavors like bitter chocolate or tart cherry. There’s a lot of minor things you can do that transforms that spicy water into something more flavorful without needing sugar.

    I love that Dr. Mike admits that he looks up information instead of guessing. There is a large number of people that expect doctors and nurses to have all the answers. They tend to forget that doctors/nurses/other medical personnel are humans, and forgetting is normal. I would instead a doctor lookup an illness or information then provide me false information.

      Totally agree. Also, I'd rather have a doctor tell me straight up "I don't knoe the answer to that at this moment" than bullshit their way to make me feel good
      Sometimes they just need a reminder, hence look up the answer

      Technically, anyone can look things up for themselves. But what matters, and what sets a doctor apart, is having reliable sources and the medical intelligence to know bogus info when they see it, and the intelligence to quickly understand and absorb rich information and how to apply it to your situation.

      The thing is, it should be expected they won't know every answer. There's so much knowledge. They need to know the body, medications, different diseases and disorders. No one person can be expected to remember all of it. I mean between undergrad, grad and masters its well over 8 years of schooling

      One of the best doctors I’ve ever had, and I’ve unfortunately had more than my fair share, was a neurologist. My case at one point was very complicated and during my appointment he paused and googled something. This was 10 years ago, and I was shocked. He was great. Retired about 8 years ago, and still miss him. He took this time with me to figure out what was going on, and really seemed to care for me as a person, not just a patient. Great guy.

    I lost almost 200lbs and I attribute a lot to sparkling water, I never drank it before. I like to say “my mom had diet soda in our bottles. And that turned to regular soda” it was hard but now I crave water more than anything. Rarely a soda now 🤷🏼‍♀️

      Congratulation!! Amazing work there friend! Interesting once you cut sodas out of your daily intake, after like one month you almost rarely want it. Me and a lot of people share the same experience. Like it doesn't even taste good either.

      @@ThaiLitzkiI wish that was my experience. The longest I have ever gone without soda is like 9 months and that was after my gastric sleeve.
      I didn’t understand alcohol addiction until I tried to quit soda.
      I don’t want to quit. It’s why I will never be successful. Sobriety is a daily choice. It’s really hard to make that choice because you “have” to and not because you want to.
      I work a harm reduction model now. 1 20oz a day and than Coke zero the rest of the day.
      I’m fat, so no matter how healthy I actually am, no one sees me that way. So I’m going to enjoy my life and pray I don’t almost die again by getting a prescription of losing weight.

    I thank seltzer for existing everyday. I used to have a bad soda addiction. I switched to seltzer water and haven’t touched soda in almost a year.

    *The answer for the paper cut question:*
    When cut by a knife or scissors, the injury is a clean cut where the edges of the wound are well defined and often not contaminated.
    Whereas when we get papercuts, it's often NOT a linear cut and it also tends to leave the fibres of the paper in between which causes inflammation and hence irritation which we feel is more painful.

    I just want to thank you for remembering that some people drink sparkling water to help avoid drinking sodas or juices too much. I have acid reflux issues, so I try to avoid drinking it right before bed, so will leave some out to go flat because I like the flavorings a lot (I checked, no sugar or sugar substitutes). I feel like some doctors forget that some people might have different reasons for doing something and just list the bad effects. It feels validating that you remembered those of us who are trying to lose weight and love healthier lives!

      I love the mild taste of the flavored seltzer water. Sometimes soda feels too heavy and if I buy a case of it, it'll be gone in a few days (not because of me). But I'm the only one that drinks the seltzer, so one case lasts me weeks or even months. 😂
      And yeah, sometimes it's easier on the tum to let it go like half-flat.

      Well, regardless of the reason for drinking it, the objective fact is that there are objective down and up sides to everything.
      Who cares about the reason.
      Someone tells you that a car accident can be damaging to you, and you take it as an insult towards you or judgement towards you as a car driver, you need some mental help, cuz it's nothing but an objective fact.

    As a future doctor myself I love your videos. Your communication throughout your videos is very inspiring and something that all United Kingdom health care professionals should look to emulate in their own work. From my experience the poor / lack of communication in hospitals here in the UK could solve so many problems if addressed correctly. There is a huge gap between the current communication system in hospitals and the one that is achievable with a minor effort form everyone.

    When I moved to the Midwest I got a new doctor. When I wanted to talk to him about HPV vaccines he turned to his computer and literally Google HPV vaccine. He explained why he turned to Google (apparently he had also just moved and previously for like 15 years he mostly been seeing 40-70+ year old patients bc of where he lived even though he was family medicine) we had a really funny and informative conversation then he followed up with some guidelines and information specific to me. All in all it was good bc I could trust him to acknowledge what he didn’t know but in the moment I could of died from laughter. Like Sir I could’ve Google that myself😂

      I remember one of my first job interviews after I got out of college (not in the medical field but still) where the interviewer asked me a simple question. “If you were faced with a problem and didn’t know the answer, what would you do to obtain that information?”
      As a person, I wanted to say “google it” but as a fresh college student, I answered that I would go ask someone with seniority or that I would look it up in a book.
      His response was “would you google it?” Dude’s been working in industry for 15 years and that was the response he was looking for. That was one of the first times that I realized school is bs 😂

      I'm interested about the 6:55 one... I'll edit this comment once I see it!
      Add on pending.... aaand here it is: I like what he had to say about it. However, seeing a doctor would help and maybe just practicing some person body positivity will help. I wore a bra all the time because of being self conscience ... now that I am mid 20s (26) ... wearing it hurts most of the say. Its not a natural support system the body is used to. In fact, wearing a bras are very foreign to the body. Not all women buy and wear the correct size which developes more problems like back issues, muscle issues, etc.

    What you said about pain perception is very true. I twisted my ankle about a month ago. I thought it was just a sprain, which happens to me often. So I was walking around on it like "nah this doesn't hurt, I'm fine" 2 weeks later it still hurt a little so I went to the doctor. They did an xray and set me up with physical therapy. since they never called me after the xray I figured it was fine. 2 weeks later I went to PT and they therapist looked into my record and it showed "probable aversion fracture". Since hearing that news the pain in my ankle has gone up substantially. Like a whole 2 points up on the pain scale. Follow up with my doctor tomorrow to find out what to do about the fact I walked on a fractured ankle for a month

    As someone who was learning to play oboe, I agree with the exhale being underrated. I’ve heard stories of oboe players passing out because they’re not exhaling fully before taking a breath. One of the reasons I stopped was because I was getting lightheaded and feeling as though I could pass out.

      As a flutist, I can agree. Getting better breaths don't help nearly as much as efficiency managing your exhales.

      I had a doctor's appointment last week, and she asked me to take a few deep breaths as she listened to my chest, as usual. She moved the stethoscope before I finished exhaling. "What instruments do you play?" "Am I that obvious? Clarinet, flute, and saxophone." "You do a nice job of breathing in deeply! Don't regularly extend your exhales! It's fine when you're playing, but you do it all the time, at least in my observation."

      That was definetly one of my problems when I played the clarinet. I wasn't used to an instrument where I had to be so smart about my breathing and it really threw me off at the start (felt dizzy, never passed out).

      Lol yea this happened to me a few times learning the oboe. My teacher was like, ok let’s break for today and later was like, you need to breath and don’t push so hard lol. That double reed is just tough lol

      Sometimes you just need to exhale and inhale quickly if you have a long enough rest for that. No need to quit just because of that.

    I survive on Bubbly. found very fast that what I actually craved with soda was the carbonation. My stomach and body just wasn’t having it with the awful chemicals in soda. I lost a ton of weight switching to sparkling water. Pineapple and strawberry bubbly are my go to drinks ❤ Got myself a soda stream so I could make it myself!

      Same here! I have had a flavored sparkling/seltzer water addiction for a couple years now. It's great for my digestion and I like the carbonation. Bubly used to be my go-to. I've shopped around and tried others like Perrier and Polar that I also love.

    On the water issue during the day, it's usually different if you chug it all at once or have it more gradually, but people can adapt, too. When I lived in the desert southwest I was very busy through the day with school and then sports after, and I would usually chug a lot of water around dinner time after sports. It was uncomfortable at first when I wasn't used to it, but my body adapted. Living in different climates and with different circumstances I've changed back to more frequent drinking but smaller amounts. Within reason, you can adapt to a pretty wide variety of circumstances as long as you generally get enough water when you're thirsty.

    I used to have GERD, but drinking sparkling water (which is acidic) has been very helpful. As I understand it, (as it was explained by my GP) was when you introduce some acidity to your stomach, the little 'acid pumps' in your stomach shut off, determining there's enough acid in there! Seems counter-intuitive, but it has worked for me. I no longer take medicine for it, so that's a good thing.

      The way it works is counterintuitive, but I'll explain. As we age, we produce less and less stomach acid (that's why we have trouble digesting certain foods as we age). Acid reflux happens when we don't have enough acid. There's sensors in your stomach that sense how much acid is in your stomach. When the level is high enough, it sends a signal to your esophageal sphincter to shut tight. So when it's too low, your esophageal sphincter opens and what little acid you do have will be splashing out. That's why you feel better when you consume acidic drinks, or even apple cider vinegar.
      If you increase the acid in your stomach, you can pretty much reverse acid reflux. You'll be able to enjoy foods like tomato sauce, chocolate, spicy foods, etc.
      You can acidify your stomach with Betaine HCL tablets. Or you can mix a tablespoon or two of apple cider vinegar in an 8oz glass of water before each meal and before bedtime. Just make sure you use a straw to protect your teeth. Also, apple cider vinegar in excess will deplete potassium, so if you get muscle cramps in your calves after consuming ACV, then take a potassium supplement.

      Works for me most of the time. I am extremely short gut and right after my last surgery I couldn't handle it. As my gut adapted it's now pretty much one of the only ways I can get rid of Air I my stomach so I don't get sick. I'm missing my illeocencol valve so maybe the esophagus tightening helps to stop the acid due to not having a valve there to do the job. Not sure. I'll have to ask my gastrointestinalolist!

    @DoctorMike for those of us who are getting older, stretching first thing in the morning before hydrating can be problematic because apparently the body’s vulnerability is greater. I learned this the hard way when I decided to start stretching while still in bed before I got up and immediately pinched a nerve that controls my left arm. It was extraordinarily painful and the impingement took days to resolve. I since learned that other friends (50s, 60s, 70s) have similarly had issues like throwing out their backs. It sounds crazy but it’s true. And Bob and Brad the RUclips physical therapist have also discussed this on their channel and the reasoning. All I can say for sure is that they really helped me to start stretching at night right BEFORE bed, which aids in body and muscle health, and now be more gentle when I get up and head for some water to drink right away.
    I hope this helps to share here because I love your vibe (so-called dad jokes and all) and the information you provide is important.

    Here's an add-on to the scented candles question. Many scented candles put harmful pollutants into the air. If your windows are open that is likely not much of a problem. But if the windows are closed, you are breathing in those pollutants unless you have an air purifier going at the same time. Scented candles that are non-polluting will usually have a label indicating this fact.

Bad labor conditions, horrible pay for farmers and workers, clearing huge areas of rainforests full of endangered animals to grow it, and more. It's one of the cheapest and easiest "renewable" oils to make, but the non-monetary cost to ecosystems and local economies where it's grown is immeasurable.

    The question about paper cuts was in a book I read once. They said it was because there are so many nerve endings on our hands that superficial cuts can hurt more in the beginning than deep wounds.

    That part about pain and your perception of it is REALLY interesting.
    It explains how sometimes you might have an injury of some sort(like a small cut on your hand or something), but it doesn't hurt and you don't notice it until you actually see it or someone points it out to you.

      I think this is why long term pain is also "dulled". People say to you "Oh you dont look like you are in pain" when in fact you have been just dealing with it a long time it stops being an "oh fuck" pain and becomes "fuck this pain is annoying".

      That answer made my inner Mom alarm go haywire. I have a teenaged son that always downplays his pain and discomfort because he doesn't want to see a doctor or disrupt his schedule. He really buys into the macho masculinity mumbo jumbo and I think that really plays into his perception of pain. Now, I am going to have to turn up my nagging to get him to see a doctor.

      What I read is that paper edge are like a chainsaw, with lots of fibers in all dieprections causing a superficial but wide itch, while a (superficial) knive cut draws out the blood, which creates a protective layer.

    I read somewhere years ago about why paper-cuts hurt more. Firstly, you usually get them on fingertips, which have larger amount of nerve endings, that get cut, so it can intensify the pain. Secondly, and this is the more important part, it's because of the depth. Paper-cuts usually do not penetrate the skin that much, mainly the outer layers, and as such they cut far fewer blood vessels (usually just capillaries), while more "serious" cuts would go a bit deeper and not only cut more capillaries, but have a chance of damaging a vein or even an artery. The amount of damage to blood vessels impact the amount of blood, and the more blood you get - the less painful the cut will be. Why? Because of oxygen. Part of the reason, why you feel pain from such open wounds is because oxygen reacts with the damaged nerves, "burning" them as oxygen does with anything else. But if you had some blood vessels damaged - blood will pour out, fill in the "gaps" in the cut, cauterize and, as such, reduce the surface area reacting with oxygen and/or slow down the reaction itself (from what I understand this depends on the form of the cut, placement, what vessels were cut, "quality" of the blood and maybe some other factors).
    Now, I can't say if this is 100% true, but to my logical mind, which has at least some basic knowledge of biology and chemistry - it does make perfect sense.

      Makes sense. I've gotten cut by scissors and paper. I didn't realize the scissors had cut me till I saw the blood dripping everywhere, but I immediately feel it when I get a paper cut. It stings more. The deeper cuts hurt more afterwards, but papercuts hurt pretty much immediately.

      Another reason is because when you look at a piece of paper under a microscope, it is a very rough material made up of basically a bunch of tiny, rough particles "glued" to each other.
      When you cut yourself with a piece of paper, a whole bunch of those tiny particles break off and get stuck in your wound, causing more pain.
      I think I saw that on QI, and you know they're always right. xD

      Very much with you on the nerve endings, though I did a mental double take at the thought of blood 'cauterizing' anything (are we getting into dragon shape-shifter territory here?).
      And yep, it makes sense that some blood is a vital part of would healing, so if there's no bleeding, there's no fun bio-chemical cascade (involving a _von Willebrand_ factor; how cool is that?) leading to blood coagulating and a nice, air-tight wound cover, so the poor wound stays open and, naturally, keeps complaining about it.

    Being someone in martial arts, I agree with the thing about perception to pain. While sparring, unexpected moves tend to feel more painful to me, and take more stamina away from me, than expected ones. I'm sure it's the same in boxing. A key to growth is to be able to not only prepare for various situations, but also adapt to unexpected ones.

    I actually did a DBT group that focused specifically on coping with mental illnesses AND chronic pain (that mind-body connection, babyyy!), so the idea that our perception of pain matters is something I've been working on for years now. It's hard work, but my pain is always less severe when I apply those skills.

    This is such a relief. I was VERY addicted to soda but am over 1 year "sober" now. All thanks to carbonated water drinks. My doctor said it was causing a hydration issue. Granted I could drink more but the carbonation wasn't causing my skin issue haha

      Great job! I was once also very addicted to soda - it took me 10 years to quit, but I am like 20 years "sober" now. Green tea and plain water are now my beverages of choice, I'm thinner, healthier, my teeth are in better shape, and food tastes better. It is so worth it. I do not miss soda in the least. About a year into my "sober-ness", I took a sip of an ice cold soda on a hot summer day & it was like drinking battery acid, so bad that I spat it out and never wanted it again. I do not understand why it's so popular.

I went to a friend's birthday party and had a coke, came home and saw the 4 empty 2liter bottles on my counter from that week and the nearly empty one in my fridge and I just got so disgusted. I'm sure I was close to diabetes with how much I drank. In moderation I think I would still enjoy it but I just can't trust myself haha

      Though I remember watching a chef hating it. He said a drop of syrup in a bottle water is healthier.

      Good for you! Coke and Pepsi want you to be addicted to sugary sodas, the same way McDonald's wants you addicted to burgers. It's wreaking havoc on lower income communities that don't have the education on how bad that stuff is for you. Even worse, they ensure that it's cheaper than the healthy alternatives like sparkling water.
      If you wanna go a step further, cut fruit juices out of your diet as well. The sugar content outweighs the nutritional value. It's better to just buy the fruit so you get the requisite fiber content as well which helps inhibit the body's absorption of sugar.

    Last question about the burns, I actually knew what they all were. Reason being is that when I was like 2, I got 2nd degree burns on my face, and a 3rd degree burn on my arm. I’m almost 27 now and some of the scars on the forehead remain, and the scar on my arm where I got the 3rd degree burn is still readily visible. Have to be extra careful with that in strong sunshine due to the lacking melanin in that part of my arm.

    The pain thing makes me think of me being chronically ill. I can put up with a lot of pain, but sharp, sudden, and unexpected pains make me cry out still. People say "you can't be in agony you still say ouch with a paper cut." They're 2 different types of pain

      Nah. My doc is the first to say "I don't know, let me look it up" if I ask an obscure question. I'd much rather he looks it up and gets accurate info rather than just relying on his memory. Dr Mike makes a good point that guidelines change all the time. No human can keep track every side effect, every treatment option, etc. at the front of their brain. Especially family docs, who never know what they're going to encounter on any given day. So keep on lookin' stuff up!

    So, as a young child I learned pain is kind of mind over matter, when I was about 6 we were at the creek, and my younger brother and I saw a dead fish and got scared and ran out of the water. As I looked back there were big streaks of blood on the rocks and river stones. I thought the blood was from my brother so I immediately checked him over. He had a very small scratch on the bottom of his foot and I registered the amount of blood that I saw could not have come from that scratch so still confused I looked at my own feet. The moment I saw the huge gash that was gushing blood on the bottom of my foot the pain hit me. I started screaming from the pain and limped back to the shore to see what had hurt me and realized there was a completely intact bottom 1/4 of a 40 0z beer bottle in the water, as we ran from the dead fish I was in front of my brother and stepped on the bottle receiving a circular gash but he had seen it and jumped over it only getting a scratch. My mom rushed me to the hospital and they had to put stitches in. I also learned what adrenaline can do because it took 6 female nurses and 3 male doctors to force my foot down into a small container of medication (I think it was iodine because it was brownish-red) I was maybe 7 at the time but I could have been 6 going to turn 7 in the fall because I started kindergarten early.

    I can 100% vouch for pain not being decided by the injury. I've broken 10+ bones and dislocated about as many joints (genetic issues). I believe I have only cried once or twice because of the pain of a fracture. But a stubbed toe or a paper cut? Oof.

    I always figured that papercuts hurt so much because they occur mostly on the fingertips, which are super sensitive, and on top of that the sides of the cut are more likely to rub together because of how soft the skin is and how much it will be moving from you touching things.

    On the pain issue: I recently fracture my radius bone near my elbow. When I went to the orthopedic doctor he asked if I wanted any pain meds. I said that Motrin was doing the trick. He looked at me weird for a second but then said ‘that’s great’. I’m sure he’s not used to hearing that. Haha.

    I saw the title and got a little nervous, because I've been using sparkling water to kick out soda since I'm on a diet. It's still what i like most about soda: the carbonation, but none of the sugar, and it's hydrating me. Good to know there's not enough bad to doing that to outweigh the good

    1:50 I remember hearing it's actually true it does hurt more and for a few reasons too. First of all, the paper cut isn't as much a "clean" cut as it is just shredding things apart. Secondly paper cuts are shallower and might not even draw blood, thus without blood there isn't a protective clot so your nerves are left exposed to the air to be hurt.

    For the person who asked the bra question, I used to wear my bra 24/7 and I don't think I have experienced any ill effects except for the impact on my self confidence. I would wear underwire bras because they made my boobs look nice and round and perky, which is not what they looked like outside of the bra wearing. I switched to non-underwired bra and as I got more comfortable with my boobs natural shape, I got more comfortable with my body and now I'm comfortable to go braless. For reference, I am in my 30s have double d boobs and they are not and have never been perky. I don't know if the person is experiencing the same body dysmorphia I was, but maybe someone reading this is and can find a glimmer of hope and work on accepting their body as it shows up for them ❤️

      I also wear a bra almost all the time. I have double D's and if they don't have support they get really uncomfortable. I stopped wearing underwire bras years ago and just use a compression sports bra so they aren't swinging around. It's 100% a size and movement thing and nothing is medically wrong.

    Regarding animals found in hospitals: I do housekeeping in a very old hospital and I have heard that occasionally bats are found inside the facility. I've been there a year and never seen one, but I guess it happens. Obviously the bats are immediately removed if one is found.

      I don't find that surprising. We occasionally get a lost bat in the building I work in. Saw one personally one winter, poor little guy must've been snoozing and there was a gap somewhere and he saw light and crawled out to investigate and had some fun getting the attention of all the grad students working that evening by flying up and down the hall (it was really neat to see him flying in full light like that, rather than just a shadow). I think normally the bat(s) have roosted in an eave or something and just take a wrong turn trying to get back outside, not like they are living INSIDE the building in large numbers as that would be quite the health hazard with the guano.

    Part of what makes a papercut worse is the pain is stinging which can be a lot more noticeable. Similar to how a smaller magnitude of tooth pain feels a lot worse.

    This is a great video. A lot of little tid bits of good information to know. Especially about the Plan B medication. Granted, I don't need that medication anymore as I have had to get my hysterectomy, but definitely good to know for my kids.

    Dr mike I’ve heard that the reason paper cut or carboard box cuts “hurt more” because unlike stuff that’s sharpened paper at a micro level is is very rigid. Kinda like how sharp scalpels are. Even though a piece of paper looks straight and even it’s not at all

    You brought back memories again of my grandfather. My mom recounted this story. My great-grandma used to make tons and tons of пельмени I believe by hand. Like make the dough and form them by hand one by one. And then my granddad would eat a ton like maybe 30 of them with lots and lots of vinegar. He loved vinegar. He kind of got me into it. But not really. If I have to choose: balsamic vinegar for life. Okay I've made it clear I'm Italian aswell. But yeah. It's been 8 years since he passed away. I miss him sometimes. I literally had teary eyed thinking about him last Friday. But at the same time, I've heard there's a new Russian ethnic store and they sell good frozen пельмени. Or else it's me, my mom and the пельмени mold thingy and kefir milk if my mom hadn't drunk it.

      I googled pielmieni. It's similar to a Polish dumpling called uszka. I love Barszcz Czerwony z uszkami (Red Borscht with Uszka). :)
      what's cykcycy (not sure how to spell it)? The second dish that doctor Mike mentioned?

      Pickled herring is delicious though and it's marinated in a mix of vinegar and water.

    I wish we were taught about running a medical practice, pros cons of private practice vs employment by hospitals/large groups, what to avoid/ must be included in contracts in medical school. I also wished they taught us the importance of disability insurance and when to increase the amount.

    We go through a LOT of sparkling water in my house. But with all of us being autistic and not liking the taste (or lack of taste) of water, it became a really great way to help the whole family hydrate.
    I did infused waters a lot before having my 3rd kid, but with his medical complexity that became too much to keep up with.
    So now we don’t buy soda, we limit juice, and the kids think sparkling water is the best ever!

    I'm a diabetic who learned to love club soda and seltzer water. I'm adversely affected by drinking beverages that contain aspartame. The side effects for me are increased arthritic pain and increased appetite. It's hard to find sugar-free beverages and drink mixes that don't contain aspartame.

    Another reason for the paper cut hurting more would be that paper is not as sharp as scissors so it’s a jagged and not clean cut while the scissors are sharper so they have a good clean cut which causes less pain
