I feel anyone new coming to these games wanting the modern controls will be utterly dissapointed.
Yeah I can already immediately see the problems with running jumps on the new setting, you literally have to spin the stick around and time it just right, so much easier and more intuitive to hold walk right before you hit an edge so she stops and tap backwards so the game prepares the exact amount of distance you need like it was designed to do. Tbh I don't care if it's considered outdated or not, I find the tank controls far more satisfying anyway and it also allows for a much greater move set, because I don't think you can even backflip in the modern setting. I have distant memories of pegging it in one direction, getting a small amount of air between me and the thing trying to eat me, then rolling and pop up facing back at the enemy and ready to pump several pounds of lead into them.
I remember playing these games back in the days, way before the Internet took off, so if you got stuck, you had to wait for the monthly game mags to help you with tips of àll the populargames.. Me and my mate played all of the tomb raiders together such good times. Also that music just sends me back. Chills. Pre-orderdd it. Cant wait
Thank you for sharing! I’m debating on if I want to put in the pre-order or if I want to wait to see full reviews before buying it. But this definitely has me leaning towards just pulling the trigger on it.
Been excited and nervous for this one. I didn't manage to play these back in the day beyond a demo of the first one and that was rough, like the MIB demo (oof). I'll wait until the full technical review as well as hope for a future physical release if I am to invest, as I'm saving up for the next Switch iteration and given the rumours, might be costly for the features. Thanks for making this one Mark, see you in the next. Cheers!
I’m so excited to get this game when I have some extra money. Tomb Raider was always such a fun part of my childhood even though I was only able to play the demo for the longest time
I love these games. The last time I played through the original was on n-gage! I don't know if i just got used to it but i never had a problem with the tank controls.
Thanks for this review, and i’m glad this runs well on switch! Loving the “remastered” feelings where the new graphics give me some sort of mandela effect, like if in my memories the game has always been like that! I was young and at that time imagination was a part of the experience, making those dinosaurs and vegetation feel more “real” than the game actually was. Same effect in Metroid Prime Remastered😁 i’ve played and finished those games many times, and i’m ready to play them even more!
I never played the games myself, as I never owned a Playstation, but I've seen those games being played by others at the time, and I remember how pretty much everyone struggled with the controls already. So even with new controls available I'm not surprised these games are still hard to play. I guess that's part of the charm. Looking forward to the full review now!
It's much, much harder to play with the so-called modern controls. You see how he wrestles to aim at the wolfs in this video. Platforming is also so much harder.
I remember renting the OG trilogy from my local library as a kid. They were so hard I never finished them. I hope this leads to The Last Revelation & Chronicles getting the Remaster treatment.
I don't understand why they would not include a lock aim system during battle. All games they were inspiring their modern gameplay to be like - Legends, Anniversary and Underworld - have a lock aim option. Thanks for the great video! Very informative.
In regards to jump dodging, is it a possibility that modern controls, paired with a custom button layout, could've unmapped the jump dodge? Or maybe clicking in the stick to lock Lara in place is a work around to make aiming and dodging more manageable with modern controls?
I can't wait to be able to grab this for my switch I remember playing the first two on my playstation one and being quite terrible. Here's hoping I've grown now
Been playing the 2013 reboot on my Ally and been loving it. With the original trilogy I very interested in this remaster and seeing the origins of Lara.
I'm sure I can finagle my way into dealing with the control scheme. I'm just happy to see that the performance is solid and it doesn't have some kind of unnecessary visual downgrade for a remaster that isn't pushing the limits so much as just cleaning up character design and environmental effects. I have multiple options for where to play this game, but the switch appeals to me because I feel like they would be fun to just chill out and play portably in bed. I never actually got to play Tomb Raider 3 back in the day so I'm excited to give that one a shot
II'm proably gonna end up using my retrobit saturn controller for this game just for that extra bit of nostalgia, I love the enhanced graphics, it looks really nice without looking too different
You need the angular edges. It's a precision-based platformer. They also weren't going to 'round out the edges' of three 20+ hour games in a remaster. If you want that, play the Crystal Dynamics remake. It's still available for you, and it has the non-tank control scheme and more forgiving platforming you prefer. The updated art style and darker, moody lighting is wonderful, I think, but that's definitely a matter of taste.
I love to see old games getting some new love, but I'm gonna be honest...I played these games (and enjoyed them) back in the day, but I can't see myself taking the time to play them again. Especially not with the overwhelming backlog of new games I've got 😬. I still like to see what's going on though so thanks for the review!
Lovely video Mark but not sure what's happened to the sound but very lofi on your vocals and a bit of an echo too. Love your vids but think this could do with an improvement. This comes from the heart as I'd listen to you both recording to cassette x
I'm kinda shocked by the opening of this review. I was expecting something like: "will are hearts be stolen like it was back then or does this remaster have 1 foot in the grave?"or something like that. Great review Switch Up.
The first tomb raider game absolutely slaps to me. The music, the unknown exploration as the original PS1 had a really short draw distance. I do think these games are better played with the tank controls due to their design. I might pick this up for nostalgia sake. The T-Rex part had my Jaw on the floor as a kid.
Pre ordered this one.... dont do that too often but the nostalgia was too strong. Port looks great, customization is awesome and I love that its not three seperate downloads!
I still replay the original TR now. I love it and the tension and puzzles = ace. Oddly, I enjoy the old precision based controls. I also like the dark areas as think they build the tension. This is a must buy for me. I just can’t decide whether to go Switch or PlayStation…
Nice review gents Excited to play this and surprised nothing was lost in its transition. You don't get a lot of faithful remasters let alone ones that run well. At one point I did have the first two TR games but never completed them. I still have Angel of Darkness tho😅 Happy gaming👍
Is there a physical of this coming out? I would love that and put it with my OG PS ones. It looks like they have does a really nice job in keeping the style of the originals!
It’s really unfortunate that they haven’t decided to do a physical release for this. I would love to replay these classics on the switch in handheld but I just can’t bring by self to purchase digital games unless they are super cheap or must own. Too bad

In regards to jump dodging, is it a possibility that modern controls, paired with a custom button layout, could've unmapped the jump dodge? Or maybe clicking in the stick to lock Lara in place is a work around to make aiming and dodging more manageable with modern controls?
Yeay! Absolutely loved these games, glad to see them on the switch.
I can't wait to be able to grab this for my switch I remember playing the first two on my playstation one and being quite terrible. Here's hoping I've grown now
I used to watch my uncle play these games when I was little I really want to give it a try for myself
This is beyond awesome 👌
Literally, these are the games that got me into gaming ❤
60 fps in handheld mode? I’m sold, getting it on switch 🥰
This is amazing! 😮
Are checkpoints still relegated to the same save point system as in the original game?
You can save wherever you want here mate and it will restart from that exact spot. Mark
II'm proably gonna end up using my retrobit saturn controller for this game just for that extra bit of nostalgia, I love the enhanced graphics, it looks really nice without looking too different
you can still do the sideways jumps in the game is just works when you got your weapon out i think
How do you save the game? Is it like the playstation where you have to find the crystals or can you save anytimw you want?
Cool, can we get ports of the "Legend" Trilogy (Legend, Anniversary and Underworld)
I wonder what the likelihood is of a patch to sort some of the 'mixed bag' controls? Think I'm gonna hold off and see before buying it.
Butler! Butler! Butler! 😉🎉
wow I didn't know you can switch between old and new I love when games do that. Gonna have to pick it up with the pre order discount too!
I’ve never had issues with any controls in any TR game since I was 4 years old . Maybe it’s just me idk.
Pre ordered this one.... dont do that too often but the nostalgia was too strong. Port looks great, customization is awesome and I love that its not three seperate downloads!
Everyone email the company & as for physical release. Let's GO!!!
I still replay the original TR now. I love it and the tension and puzzles = ace. Oddly, I enjoy the old precision based controls. I also like the dark areas as think they build the tension. This is a must buy for me. I just can’t decide whether to go Switch or PlayStation…
Hi Mark, great video! Is there any change to the save system or is it still the old crystal save points?
Cheers!
Nice review gents
Excited to play this and surprised nothing was lost in its transition.
Unfortunately, Aspyr said no physical release is planned. It's a shame because they did a great job on this, not a mere "cashgrab"
It’s really unfortunate that they haven’t decided to do a physical release for this. I would love to replay these classics on the switch in handheld but I just can’t bring by self to purchase digital games unless they are super cheap or must own. Too bad
How are they going to revive a super nostalgic series like this for old and new gamers and it not be physical?! Such a miss.
Looks great, im gonna buy this
Damn, Lara's still looking fi-ine. I can't wait to play these classics again. The first game in particular is one of my earliest PC game memories. I'm sure they hold up pretty well.
That thumbnail tho🔥
