    The Tide games really found gold in their melee systems. Overall fairly simple on the surface (light attack, heavy attack, block, push), but tons of mechanics and functionality under the surface that leads to the combat feeling incredibly fluid, meaty, complex, instinctive, and satisfying.

      Yeah, nothing I love more seeing on my team than an Ogryn who has his shield out 75%+ of the time or a Psyker who chain casts the surge staff secondary. It makes missions so much easier when large portions of groups are constantly locked down by one or two of your teammates.

      Just got 'Inquisitorial Legend' achievement today for finishing all 7 mission types on t4. Less than 2% of players have it on Steam. Only need one more specific action penance on my Zealot and I will have them all done. My group of friends consistently beats t4 over 70% of the time and we find it mostly comes down to sticking together and all of us being in voice chat. We run different combinations of builds all the time as well as builds that are considered 'sub-optimal'. The main thing is just playing with a full team.

    Something also very important to know is how your weapons push counter attack works.
    For instance, the heavy axe's push attack gives it a wide slash for some desperately needed cleave!
    Most weapons work similarly; The push attack is *usually* an attack the normal combo lacks.
    A wide-sweeping weapon may get an overhead chop for dealing with singular tough boys, for instance.
    Finding this out was a game changer for me since it made weapons like the axe feel way more viable!

    Cleave, armor piercing, and stagger. All important traits to have. You ideally want a mix of all 3 traits built across your team, in addition to raw damage. This is why I recommend always having 4 veteran's wielding power swords, going full unga bunga in pure melee. Mhm.

      While I agree that the power swords are over tuned on vets, It's not the best weapon in the game - it has almost no stagger vs. hordes and highly armored targets. If they rush you and you need to charge the weapon again they will very likely get some hits in or you need to trade space or stamina for time.

    • @nothingtobeconcernedabout7477
      @nothingtobeconcernedabout7477 Год назад +5

      @@TheBouregard pre nerf you didn't need stagger vs hordes because the baseline cleave value was overtuned. Also depending on your ranged weapon, you could thin them with both ranged weapons and grenades (which you would get enough off with that trait). The weapon special when activated mitigated the lower performance against highly armored on top of you potentially having a ranged weapon that could handle highly armored targets.

    Great video! I want to do Damnation runs with you. The way you let that Zealot take care of that horde in the end of the video shows that you respect and understand each partymember's role. Most players would just compete for kills in the same situation, potentially wasting ammo or taking unnecessary dmg, when the better option is to watch the Zealot's back.

  • @blighter88
    @blighter88 Год назад +2

    There's another mechanic to cleave that you didn't mention, which is damage falloff per target. With each enemy you hit, you will do significantly reduced damage to the next enemy hit by that swing. The amount seems to differ from weapon to weapon, but generally after the third target hit you will be doing single digit damage. This means increasing cleave past 3 targets will not net you any extra damage, but you will still get the full effectiveness of staggers and bleeds on ALL targets you cleave.
    So basically the takeaway is 3 target cleave is all you need to be optimal, anything past that is essentially a crutch unless you are going for a utility build, which I generally wouldn't recommend unless you are playing with a friend you can reliably synergize with.

    Blocking and holding attack with an axe does a cleave that staggers multiple enemies, not just a single target weapon as stated. Also a lot of weapons have special attacks that are better for staggering and counter attacking. Ogryn punch for example will drop a Mauler or Rager straight to the ground.

    One thing that should be kept in mind is that you deal damage to the area your weapon intersects first. This is especially important for the Mauler cause they wear carapace helmets and pauldrons so if you have a weapon that starts the attack from the top right for example you are going to hit the heaviest armor first. On the bulwark the shield is active at all times, you can actually manipulate attacks around the shield. For example if you use a charged up attack of the power hammer to make the bulwark stagger and then charge another one, sidestep left you can hit the chest before it can bring the shield back up fully.

    I always perfered in vermintide to use my firearm to clear the armored enemies due to melee being more reliable for squishy hordes. I kinda get the same feel for some of the darktide weapons too. Espically since ranged is more needed now, I would rather use my ranged on high values than chaff.

    • @UnknownSquid
      @UnknownSquid Год назад +1

      That depends entirely on the weapon though. If you're carrying a lazgun, autogun, shotgun, heavy stubber, etc, then you do zero or close to zero damage vs carapace, forcing you to pull melee to do heavy attacks. Both ranged and melee have options for both. The important thing is understanding the role and characteristics of the weapons you pick. Many of the best crowd clearing weapons in the game happen to be ranged weapons. Ultimately there's more types of threat than any one player can be prepared for, so like Zerk was saying, it's all about team comp.

    • @UnknownSquid
      @UnknownSquid Год назад +1

      When I first started out, I was playing Veteran and initially hated the axe. It's comparative lack of crowd control made me feel way too vulnerable. I also saw my job as being to deal with specialist and mid-tier ranged enemies, rather than getting up close with armoured foes, so it's armour piercing ability felt wasted. So I switched back to the catachan sword with it's nice cleave.
      Later on playing Psyker, I started out the same, keeping a cleave weapon for sake of having better horde defence. Once I unlocked the super powerful crowd clearing staves though, I realised that my melee choice was kind of redundant. I was never really using it for the purpose I'd picked it. The bigger problem for this playstyle, had turned out to be the random straggler enemies and the sneaky ones that got up behind me, distracting me and preventing me from shooting. I tried out the combat axe again, and it worked amazingly well. The really high damage on the light attack was enough to consistently oneshot all mid to low tier enemies. I didn't even need it's anti-armour capabilities since I had brain burst, but the way it quickly and reliably dispatched small groups of enemies without any delay, meant that I was able to have far more up-time with my staff and brain burst.
      So yeah, there's so much hidden nuance and synergy in this game.

    Axes DO cleave, on your blocking counter attack hit. I know it works because my stacks of Punishment ("Attacks that hit three or more enemies grant +30% impact for five seconds, stacking five times. At max stacks, gain Uninterruptible.") as a preacher keep stacking when I block and counterattack repeatedly..
    Best of all, most of them have a multiplier that makes the second and third targets get hit for the same as the first enemy. So my 273/284 axe can hit 3-4 scumbags at a time with lots of penetration, applying stacks of brittleness, and giving me +150% Impact, which then helps me crowd control even more (since it pushes them to the ground instead of just stagger at full stacks), or refilling my health with Holy Revenant...
    Axe is totally worth it to melt big armored bois down in 2-3 hits, and I don't feel handicapped in the cleave department at all.. It's also much faster than eviscerator sword (my fave is the Antax pattern), and I don't need to turn it on to do full damage.
    And if there's a horde, I got a flamer...

    Funfact: I play the Veteran and he has something called a Powersword. Its hits are only horizontal AND can be powerup with the alt fire. The altfire, which powers the sword also has enough hitmass to cleave THROUGH a armored Ogryn.I also use a powersword which has also the skill: Ignore Hitmass for x seconds after a critical hit.
    Well...the horizontal hits almost 100% hit the Head all the time triggering the skill, even midswing!!!
    Tl;dr i can hit AND kill an unlimited amount of mobs in one strike... including flak armored and some Elites.

    Something else that I don't see mentioned enough, is blocking while reviving.
    Too many times have I seen people trying to fight off a horde, only to turn around to their now expired teammate.
    Before reviving, make sure your stamina is fully recovered, then start reviving your teammate. You will block in a full 360 as long as you have stamina.
    Also.. when you are getting revived.. BLOCK!!! You still block during your get-up animation. Way too many people are getting revived only to get insta-downed again. Hopefully in the future they'll adjust the animations for this to be more clear.

    I have a question. What is IMPACT and how does it works? I'm playing with the zealot and at level 10 has a feat that gives you +30% impact if you hit 3 or more enemies with a mele attack. This bonus can stack to 5 times (+150% impact) and at 5 stacks you cannot be interrupted. But IDK what impact does.

    My number one gripe with Darktide right now is the complete inability to control what group you join or at least see what they have. Joining matches as an Ogryn only to find myself on a team with three psykers makes even Heresy a struggle, let alone Damnation. Feels like quickplay is just wasting my time.
    Especially frustrating given that Vermintide 2 had a match browser which told you everything you needed to know prior to joining.

    Not true! There are 4 variants of axe. 3/4 of them don't cleave, but the "Antax" DOES have cleave and First Target stats. They trade off the finesse stat for cleave, but it makes for a weapon that's good at cleaving hordes and staggering ogryn at the same time. I recommend it.

    In summery, stagger = how much shove your weapons do, Less on thick boys
    Cleave = how many dude you can slap per slap, less on thick boys
    Armour piercing = thickness ignoring.
    Me who runs around at mach 5 with nothing but a speed boost knife and laspistol. Glad I know why the only thing I can do is avoid damage.

    Great video! What i still dont understand; whats better cleave or ignoring hit mass?
    Ignoring hit mass feels great on axes.

    • @BuckRodgers3
      @BuckRodgers3 Год назад

      I'd probably say hit mass because it helps against armored enemies who become more common the higher difficulty level you go. But it mainly depends on your character, build, and what you are using your melee weapon for, if you have a anti armor ranged weapon then getting a sword with cleave to swing through huge hordes is amazing, if you have a horde clear ranged weapon getting an axe for dealing with small groups of armor is your way to go.

    • @UnknownSquid
      @UnknownSquid Год назад

      Like Zerk was saying in this, it's all about team comp. Neither is outright better, both are good at their own particular role.
      Ignoring hitmass won't do you any good when a horde swarms you but will make those big guys way easier to deal with.
      And good cleave won't help you much against an unexpected rush of armoured ragers and maulers, but will make hordes relatively trivial to deal with.
      If playing for higher difficulties, try to ensure your team has a mix of everything covered, and try to help each other do their respective jobs.

    Amazing video although I disagree with your statement about combat axes. Two of them are very capable of cleaving, one even having a cleave modifier (mines at 80% cleave targets). The trick is with combat axes, it's mostly the push attack that cleaves.
