Nice video. As a Polish-American who had the good fortune to go to college with Australians and Kiwis, I really enjoyed your Perspective. I definitely NEED to visit Poland - and Australia - one of these days as there's a really cool vibe there. And,damn... Krakow is SO BEAUTIFUL!!
And then there's the food... I already know that I love kielbasa, Pierogi, Bigos, golumpki and Pączki. BUT I'd love to TRY one of those MASSIVE Zapiekanka Sangers and Poland's legendary Ice Cream🍦 A food Vlogger I follow said the Polish Ice Cream gave her a "foodgasm," WHATEVER that is!!😀

Pod Aniolami/Under the Angels is my favourite restaurant in Krakow.
I've been eating there for over 15 years. Never had a bad meal.
If I'm due to go to the Krakow Christmas market in December, I make sure I book a table by June. This wonderful restaurant will be booked up very quickly during December.
Definitely one of our favourites too :) The Christmas markets in Krakow would be amazing! Enjoy your visit!
6:00 "Maczanka krakowska" is few centuries older than hamburgers. The legend says it was served as a cheap food for poor students in Krakow (so the story is quite similar to that of Italian pizza), though Poznan claims to be "cradle" of that food as well.
Of course the only legitimate "Polish pizza" is zapiekanka. It was always popular in Poland and last decades it became the most popular Polish street food, also the most recognizable by foreign tourists. It's even more popular than Turkish kebab (which is interestingly a lot more popular than in Turkey, LOL).
15:17 Polish "ą" should be pronounced as nasal "o" (close to the French "on"). "Pączki" i "paczki" are in Polish two separate words with different meanings ;-)
... and "ł" should be pronounced as English semivowel "w".

"Ruskie pierogi" does not mean "Russian pierogi". Word "Ruskie" in this case is an adjective made from word "Ruś" - which is a historical name for a land located basicly where modern day Ukraine is (more or less) and it (Ruś) is not sinonimus with Russia (which back then was and still is a different place). Funny fact - even most of Poles don't realise this.
BTW. Audio is awfull - do something about it next time.

In our 'Best pierogi in Krakow' article (almostlanding.com/best-pierogi-in-krakow-poland/), we go into detail about this too, that Ruskie Pierogi does not mean it is Russian in origin, and actually refers to Rus or Ruthenia, as you mention. The reason we say 'otherwise known as Russian Dumplings' in the video, is because they are referred to on many menus in Krakow as Russian Dumplings, and also the google translate of Ruskie will show up as Russian. Many of our audience are travellers and it's handy to know that if they are looking for Ruskie Pierogi it's the same as Russian dumpling on a menu :) But thanks so much for your comment, because it's so important to us that what we share is accurate.

The debate about the place of birth, Ural and Siberia, both administering strong claims. Pelmeni are considered the heart of Russian cuisine.
The filling can be minced meat (pork, lamb, beef, or any other kind of meat, venison being particularly traditional), or fish. The mixing together of different kinds of meat is also popular. The traditional Udmurt recipe requires a mixture of 45% beef, 35% mutton, and 20% pork. Various spices, such as black pepper and diced onions as well as garlic, are mixed into the filling.
Simple: "Ruthenian" not "Russian".

@@gantz1978 I know about this. I'm Polish. In Polish language, the Ruthenian and Russian pronunciation is similar. Pierogi Ruthenian Pierogi Ruskie) come from the Ruthenian Voivodeship. It was for a thousand years the south-eastern part of Poland. Today it's western Ukraine. Therefore, we do not translate Russian dumplings only Ruthenian dumplings. This is a common mistake. Many Poles do it too, because they don't know history. I wrote about Russian dumplings ( Pelmeni) to show the difference. The best dumplings with meat are from Georgia. They are called Chinkali.
“Kielbasa” means sousage, in Poland we have many different sausages- for example- Kiełbasa Krakowska, Kiełbasa Myśliwska, Kiełbasa Wiejska, Kiełbasa Podwawelska, Kiełbasa Śląska, Kiełbasa Jałowcowa and many, many others locals sausages :-) .

Dumplings with blueberries, are the taste of my childhood, we went to the forest for blueberries and then made dumplings that when freshly harvested, taste best when poured with cream and touched on the surface with a little sugar. Nothing can replace them.

As a typically arrogant Cracovian I watch tourist vlogs to laugh at the very basic choices in them, and you know what? This is annoyingly good, there was literally one place I could think of that you missed (Meat and Go, a superb sandwich place in the Tytano complex). Everything else was exactly what somebody who knows the city well would suggest trying, you've done your research and gone from the street snacks to fine dining, via traditional and classic milk bars. You even found space to mention the food truck craze. Of course it concentrates on Polish food but there are a couple of non-native trends worth exploring, as a side note - there's been a big increase in Italian, Korean and Bangladeshi, as well as Indian people living here recently, and some have opened great places to eat. Anyway, thanks for a good video and most of all thanks for not mentioning Auschwitz once:D

About those patato pancakes - you can easily make some when you're back in home right now ;) you just need some grated potatoes and onion + egg + some flour and a pan to prepare it ;) eat with everything you like!

From my brief stay so far it seems that most food is drenched in butter, especially cooked vegetables which makes it difficult for me to eat. I have to avoid dairy products and I don't know enough polish to check lol

A=A , while Ą sounds like English OU - to make it simple - Pączki = Ponczki , because Paczki like you said in the video means Parcels :) Paczki & Pączki are two different things . The trick with CZ , SZ - is when you replace Z into H , then you will have English version CH or TCH , SH . RZ or Ż - is like G in French - Gittanes or English Giraffe . DŻ - sounds like in Italian Giro or English Jam = Polish Dżem . CH sounds like H , Chleb (bread) = Hleb , Ó sounds the same like U in word Urban or Uber , so Wódka = Vudka or Voo - dka :) W=V , Poland is a fatherland of this alcohol . Forgot the last one - L & Ł , L=L while Ł is like English W (William) . You made great job , thank you guys !

This Russian song in the background during the filming of the pierogi festival is a bit missed/out of place. As I understand it was supposed to be a reference to ruskie pierogi, the problem is that ruskie pierogi (incorrectly translated into English as Russian dumplings) have nothing to do with Russia. In fact the adjective ruski (or in plural ruskie) comes from the noun Ruś, not Russia. And to be more precise, the name of pierogi ruskie comes from the name Ruś Czerwona (Ruthenia Rubra in latin) that is, from the name of the historical land located in northwestern Ukraine and in south-eastern Poland. If pierogi ruskie actually came from Russia then it would be called pierogi rosyjskie. Just a small clarification. ;) Other then that, it's pretty nice video. Cheers!

Honestly, many Poles are also convinced that the adjective 'ruskie' in the name of pierogi comes from Russia hence we can often see in the menu in the restaurants this name translated into English as Russian pierogi/dumplings. Another thing is that there is probably no English translation of the name 'Ruś'.

These aren't Russian pierogi. These are Ruthenian pierogi. Ruthenia was part of Poland for a thousand years. Now it's Western Ukraine. You had a good trip but very calorific XD Milk Bar. The first milk bar, a snack bar serving vegetarian dishes based on milk, eggs and flour, was opened in Warsaw in 1896 by Stanisław Dłużewski (breeder, farmer and landowner). The bar was called "Nadświdrzańska Mleczarnia" and was located at Nowy Świat Street in Warsaw. The bar was profitable, and soon other entrepreneurs opened similar branches. Milk bar is a type of fast food restaurant in Poland, which spread in the period after World War I, and then spread on the other. Milk bars operate on the basis of home cooking. It's called milk "dairy", because the menu contains a large number of dairy products, as well as cereals, egg dishes (omelettes) and flour (cakes) less meat. In the 1950s, beer appeared in some milk bars. Visitors are attracted not only by home-made dishes, but also by the menu. Annually, from the state budget, about 9 million dollars are allocated to support dozens of milk bars in Poland. Therefore, but also thanks to the help of city authorities (cheap rent, free gas, electricity), prices in milk bars are really low: about 3-4 times lower than in the usual restaurant. My student life was in milk bars. XD I miss the beef tongue in horseradish sauce. XDDDDDD Jewish cuisine in Polish style is interesting. This can be tasted in the Kazimierz district.

I want to give two recommendations, based on quality and taste more than popular claims. Remember that underneath are my SUBJECTIVE recommendations.
First: Zapiekanka (plural: Zapiekanki). Somehow, every time, even among locals, when I hear about Zapiekanka, okrąglak ("Rounded One"?) at Plac Nowy shows up, completely ignoring best place to have them. Don't know, why that happens, since at Plac Nowy they are using mediocre ingredients. They are equivalent of pizza made on top of shitty margherita, drown in many flavours. If you want superb quality zapiekanka, go to spot at Sienna Street, near Rynek. They will not cover it in many ingredients, but bread, cheese and mushrooms are great quality.
Second: Ice cream. Good Lood... They are very liked, but they rely heavily on unhealthy addictions in modern society. Sugar or taste boosters (unholy trinity is closed with salt). If every spoon of sugar and every pinch of booster gives you pleasure, then Good Lood is for you. I don't say they are giving them in big quantities, but they taste like they have too much. If you associate good strawberry ice cream with strawberries, cream and spoon of sugar mixed together, there is better place to go. If you prefer moderate amounts of sugar in any desserts (so contrary to what most confectionaries with mass production accustomed us to), choose ice cream from Starowiślna 83.

"Pierogi ruskie" doesn't mean "Russian pierogi". It's "Ruthenian pierogi", as it originates from the Kievan Rus', not from Russia

STOP RIGHT THERE. Did you just call oscypek"just smoked cheese"? That's like calling the Big Ben just a clock, or calling the statue of liberty just as metal statue. Oscypek is the ultimate prime super duper cheese of the polish mountains. Made with both goat and cow milk by special artisan crafters it is theeeeeeee cheese.

Hi Marek we love pierogi but we definitely tried and loved many other Polish dishes and food as you can see in this video :) What are your favourite Polish foods we should try next time?
try flaki soup (tripe) . ogurkowa (pickle soup) . pyzy (dumplings with meat ) . bigos (hunter stew ) , shabowy (schnitzel Polish way ) I am sure you will like it , accept tripe its really good but the word tripe my turn you off

@@almostlanding it's highly recommended to try "flaki", "pyzy z mięsem" and "bigos" (these are iconic polish dishes, just like pierogi). ;)
