Hopefully, Volkswagen will consider some design changes in the future when it comes to customer desires. Wait. For real? No hydraulic struts to hold up the bonnet?? Even my Mk4 golf has that.... Man, nowadays they really build cars as cheaply as they possibly can, and charge as much as they can..

I really like your videos. Thing is, cost of production and development has sky rocketed recently. EU legislation means that model ranges across manufacturers will soon have to average 80g/km. Very unrealistic, and it means that manufactures are saving cost and weight where they can, which would explain most of the issues of this golf vs the MK7. I would have loved to seen gas struts and soft touch plastic in the back, but neither are used at all for a vast majority of golf owners. It think Ive popped the bonnet on my Audi 4 times in the last 12 months for example. VW are one of many who are putting up their prices. You can now pay £30,000 for a Peugeot 208 for example. Also, in a world of SUV's smaller hatchbacks like these will not be selling as well as they used to.
I agree with some of your points, but come on, you have volume buttons on the steering wheel, there's no need for a physical knob. Also, it doesn't matter whether it's 2020 or 2050 and how expensive the car is. If you are a tall person and need space in the back for passengers you need a bigger car, simple as that. Not a single car in the Golf-segment will you give enough space in the back if you're very tall. Go for the Passat, A4, 3-Series, C-Class, Model 3 etc.
Good and informative video! I will get this car in a week. Still excited tough. I agree with you that some things could have been different. But the car still feels good and drives amazingly. Plus it comes with some nice features. Can't wait to have it! Greetings from Netherlands! ;)
@@piee683 the car drives amazingly and really comfortable. There are some things that are annoying. 1. Climate controls + volume. You really have to get used to it. When it is dark, the buttons don't have light so it is really hard to control them during driving. 2. The car has some bugs. One time the alarm went off when opening car. This took like 10 minutes and couldn't disable. This is one of the many bugs I had. 3. The 1.5 petrol engine makes a weird high-pitch noise when driving. Went to the garage and they said it's normal and can't do anything about it. To be honest, it feels like the car was rushed a bit. Not worth the money now but might change in the future when they fix everything and reduce price.
@@mojo3717 I have a 7.5 with 1.5 tsi engine also ,its annoying for you to be hearing a noise ,does yours kinda b jumpy when cold as my wife calls it kangaroo petrol it appears to be a bug vw cant fix with the tsi engine, I don't know but I cant see myself going for another golf unless they dramatically improve in the future
Hey, I really like the new Golf, but I do agree with many of the things that you have said here. The main thing that I disagree with are the lack of buttons of AC etc. I think the new bars are a good middle step between going full digital or full analog. And besides, I usually turn on volume on the steering wheel anyway and AC is usually on 21 degrees or auto with me so haha. Also 1 thing. The LED in the boot illuminates the part under the false floor. Though a second light would have been awesome. Also strange. The test car that I had did change from night to dark mode. Might be a bug.
I have one tho and it drives great and plastic is good in the cabin i am not a huge than of the removing of the physical buttons but it is still better than my old ford focus
That "cheap plastic" it s used because is very durable over time. You can drive it over 30 years without having to change anything. I know because I have a golf 4 and it still working fine after 20 years, with 260.000 Km on board. Regarding your observation, that there is no leather version, maybe it's the same reason in the middle, the car is so reliable that you would have had to change it a few times, I do not know, I guess.

Totally get you and like some of your suggestions. Looks, interior, physical buttons and practicality. You’d find some of those premium features are on GTD, GTI and R Trim. I have 2019 GTD which has better trim and looks than MK8 so I’ll be keeping mine for few years. Just don’t like the front of the New Golf. I’m aware new Golf R looks bit better but I’m not in market for race style car. Just want a sporty car with right balance.
Having test driven this exact same model you don't need buttons for the a/c or for volume or phone calls as you can manage it all from the steering wheel and touch screen if you set it up correctly (user error). Additional storage space in the arm rest and side of centre console. Like the idea of extending the sun visor. Overall I would pick the R-line model as offers the all round best package for standard driving. Especially with early offers in some countries on early orders.
Skoda generally have a better price to performance than VW because Czechia have a cheaper living wage than Germany, Spain and Portugal. The margins on the Golf were already slim so with the cost cutting exercise VW tried to cheapen the Golf without people really noticing but it's there alright. For one it's far cheaper to programme software for HAV than to have physical buttons. It's cheaper to use the same platform than to develop a brand new one or exisitng one.
Hi, first of all thanks for the great video. I've watched all the videos of you on the Golf 8 and I can't wait to have mine. Regarding the display of the navigation system at night! Are you sure that the car has set the switch to automatic? There are three little lines in the navigation screen in the lower left corner - if you click on them you can set whether it should be automatic, day or night. Maybe you just missed that, or maybe I did and you have already checked it. Greetings from Germany!
I do agree with you that cars are getting a bit more pricey. Depending on the country though, certain cars have certain prices that are light years apart. Same car in my country, Cyprus, starts at 21.900 euros, which by the way is a very very good price for a 150ps car. VW group has been the top seller in Cyprus for a few years now, mainly because their prices are great. But my issue is that more and more automobile manufacturers make more and more high performance cars, which become unaffordable, even when 5 years old. So if this car in Germany starts at 30.000 euros, you might as well save some money and buy the Golf R at 40.000 euros.
The video showed clearly that VW is cutting costs, because of the Diesel Software gate and the investments in EV's. Cheaper plastics, the hydraulic stuts disappeared, use of the old MQB platform, etc. These are only the visible items. I am afraid there are even more not visible use of cheap materials, which will affect the reliability. The new models of Renault (Capture) and Peugeut (2008) use better visible materials than the more expensive VW T-Roc. If a spend so much money, than it should be visible. I am positive about my current Tiguan2, but if VW does not change there strategy, it will be my last VW.
Most of the things you've mentioned are just irrelevant and unnecessarily noted as part of the criticism. If you really don't fancy them, just buy the Golf 7 and you'll have all of them. Volkswagen have tried to improve the previous Golf generations by bringing this one to another higher greater level, but still keeping some main cornerstone headline typical Golf features, famous from the previous models. To be honest, they have done a great job with that. There would always be advantages and disadvantages with everything you do or buy, especially with cars. However, on this Golf 8 the positives are much more than the negatives. Therefore, I do not agree with these 25 things you dislike, but, hey, everybody has an opinion! Interestingly, your "worst thing" (no cup holder roller cover, #16) was never included on North American models, apart from the Golf R. I believe this was because our versions still had handbrakes. Americans won't notice this change! I also don't get the "no knobs" hate, since almost everything on the car can be controlled using the physical buttons on the steering wheel.
@@JRCarReviews The gauge cluster indicates an incoming call, and the option for "answer" is highlighted. In that case, you hit "OK" to select the "answer" option. Perfectly logical IMO.
I agree with almost all your criticisms. Some of the parts have gone down in quality compared to the Mk7/7.5 generation. If some of the interior quirks remain for the more pricey GT(I/D/E) and R models, it would be pretty disappointing!
Hi Josip. In terms of functionality should I go for the A3 instead of the Golf? Also, do you consider the standard composition media screen on the Golf with physical buttons a better option despite the lack of navigation and voice commands?
Nice video, I agreed many of them. And VW removed many of stowing area in the car. Sunglasses holder on the top, little box on the left side of steering wheel and drawers under the seat etc. I can see too much cost cutting details on mk8. And I’m thinking standart digital instruments are really costly for VW.

@@JRCarReviews I agree that leatherette is fine, though in my opinion good alcantara/ premium fabric choices are nice and more comfortable. But I do think that a part-leatherette option should have been available.
on the R-line you get 'Sardegna' cloth front seats and outer rear seats with Art Velour inner sides of bolsters... Looks far better than Leather, not to mention cheaper and offer higher sales.
Watching the video again you are clearly not used to the MK 7 either as some things have not changed, like the charging point in the center console. Using this with an adapter will give you access to old USB versions.
It should be there.. Since golf 4 or 5 is there, pretty convenient, now you have SOS buttons if you will but on the road to drive safely in the summer you need the glasses compartment being blinded by the sun , it's been there since the beginning on year 2000 I think..cutting costs really is disappointing, I was considering the mark 8 golf , but the more I looked at the new mark 8 golf I'm more inclined to go for the mark 7 golf which is cheaper, and there are considerable discounts.. At 18-19k € you get almost all the features with the 1.5 gasoline engine and confortline version manual gearbox .. And to top it all it lacks the gas strout on the engine bonnet..that is really cheap fom VW, love the golf..I have a mark 6 golf which it appears better built and with independent suspension on the rear which makes all the difference , don't think to go higher then golf 7.5 version of golf eventually if they don't fix these problems.. If road comfort and noise insulation were my key aspects in choosing, do you think these 2 things where the new one is better, would be sufficient to choose it over the previous generation? And how would it compare to the current generation of A3? ( Not the new upcoming one)
The main problem is that the (well equipped) price sits somewhere in between cars like the CEED, Corolla and Mazda 3 and stuff like the 1 Series and A-Class. So it is in it's own price range. It drives about as good as the luxury c-segment cars, but the interior and some of the refinement tweaks are just not there. I have driven most of these cars at least once, and the Golf is really in between these 2 categories. It feels a lot more comfortable and refined than the Corolla etc. but it is just not there with an A3 or 1-Series.
The Mk 8 is cost cutting exercise, no bonnet gas struts. The most notable are - no covers on the door handles for the key lock, no storage compartment on the drivers side and in some models no sun glass compartment), no covers in the central compartments (drinks area and charging self), under the bonnet is not painted, in some models the glove compament is not lined, some of the plastics in the dash feel cheap, and lets face it a digital display is a lot cheaper to manufacture than physical buttons and the engineers did not take account of safety implications of using these touch system when driving.
Compared to my Golf 7 i would say this car makes no sense 😂 For example why did they removed the gas springs for the engine hood? There are so many things which I don’t like. So I totally agree to your review in this video!

Imam neki osjećaj da će golf 7.5 još neko vrijeme držati visoku cijenu jer osmica ima neke svoje prednosti, ali ima puno mana za koje mislim da ljudi balkana neće moći preći preko. Ali opet će biti onih koji će reći golf je golf. Neželim nikoga vrijeđati, dapače i sam vozim sedmicu karavana i odličan je. Ali osmica je čudna, napraviala je 2 koraka naprijed ali i 1 nazad.
Yes, its rather disappointing. They have cut corners in visible areas. I have always chosen VW because of its high standard of finish. My 2015 GTI is better finished. I am also bitterly disappointed that in South Africa there is no manual option.

On Variant the boot opening is shit. Most annoying is the lack of cup holder cover. 100% agree. This is the most horrible part pf the interior and its so close to the driver
Forza223 Bowe I have an mk7 the manual version........ the clucth broke at 30000 kms, the sunroof acrylic housing cracked,lots of interior noise specially from the cover for the trunk behind the back seats, dusty break pads........ but you should really love golfs to get one...........and almost forgot pricey maintenance
Malo postaju preskupe ove kutije. heeheh Gledam akciju Audija, 20k eura za A3 hečbek i sedan sa 35 TFSI. Bolje uzeti to nego ovog Golfa plastikanera iako je noviji. A novi A3 je po meni ekstra izašao, mnogo bolje nego A klasa i ona rugoba serija 1.
Looks to me like some serious cost cutting! I really don’t see this as a premium car anymore! I just don’t get the new Golf because the Seat Leon is much cheaper but doesn’t look/feel less of a car and the new A3 is much nicer inside but if you work them out spec for spec no more expensive.
Feature-by-feature the A3 is incomparably more expensive than the Golf. Likewise, a fully specced Golf has more features than the new Leon (multi link rear suspension, head up display)

I'm 99% with you and what all you said except for your height in the back seats where host a 200cm man is so difficult! And even if volkswagen means cars for the people , the price is too expensive, 100% agree with you. I think car sellers will have to grant good discount especially after the Covid19 era where the crisis will affect everyone
The mistakes made on this car is totally unacceptable for its price tag. When greed takes over this is what happens. People should boycott VW so they learn a valuable lesson
Mazda 3 costs much more than Golf 8 and the quality is not any better. Germans have no need to shame on, but it looks like you have ;-). Btw: Golf 8 will be my next car in few weeks. I´m thrilled to have it :-)
@@blackcrackmanace Gentelmans, with exactly same equipments the Golf costs 4000 more then Mazda 3, please double check the equipments list(see configurators), as base Mazda 3 contains a lot of features which on the Golf must be payed extra.. Both are great cars anyway.
No hood shock as on Mk7, no cloth on pillar covers as on Mk4, Mk5, Mk6 and Mk7, no cover on water bottle holder, lots of cheap hard plastics, unlike on Mk4,5,6,7, no baseless rear view mirror as on Mk 7.5. in general Mk4 has better materials inside! And mk7.5 is a better car.
Mk4 was a huge leap forward for the Golf with the tdi 90pk and tdi red 110pk in the late 90's . Also good materials and quality. Now these days VW uses cheap plastic in all there car types...even the latest type Taigo.

Nice video, I agree with your dislikes. I thought you will also complain abougt the light switch, too. I think it is terrible, but I have never tried a Golf 8 yet. I have to admit I don't really like the design either and the lcd instrument. I think my next car will be a Golf 7.5 then I will probably switch to another brand :)
I've thought about this for a long time. I had a mk1 Focus for 6 years and yes, while parts of its interior trim seemed built by a toddler, guess what? It was 100% reliable mechanically. Compared to German junk, which have this veneer of being well built, but get past 100,000kms, and no matter how vigilant you've been with servicing, major engine problems WILL occur. So lets take this new Focus, so ok it does not quite pass the centre console rigidity test, but it's more spacious inside, is nicer to drive, and is more refined at speed. Saunders conveniently ignores the last aspect when every other review has stated that the Golf 8 has a fair bit of wind and suspension noise. So, unless you're hell bent on having digital controls, give the Focus a try.

@@paulb8153 I have a Golf 7 which has less hard plastics, a felt lined glovebox and gas struts so, in terms of premium features and materials, the 7/7.5 is evidently superior to the new generation. What is more, the "old" 6th gen Golf even had soft-touch rear doors.
Just checked the car at a VW dealer last week. The touch control panel is not practical It’s a mess. I can’t believe VW people did this mistake. As an owner of golf 6 and 7 I waited so much for 8, but I will go for other car. By the way civic 2020 returned to physical buttons...
simply VW is laying down Golf for ID.3 electrical car the future of the mark and the new Icon i think ...they make it worst this time for that reason ...also all these technologies on board you should be a little smart to understand all features ...not for simple people i think who are familiar with physical buttons.honnestly im not fan of all the technologies like you are using smartphone on cars with the digital screen and its not realy good for safety to be focus on that while driving ...easy to get accident .
It’s disgraceful the lack on insight, the screens and infotainment systems are just an afterthought. The materials look cheap and nasty. The styling is lazy, not much effort put in at all. I have a mk7 golf R and I think it’s wonderful, the 7.5 is even better, but this Mk 8 is a big bag of lazy, cheap, shite.

Vozim ga vec 7 dana i kajem se sto sam prodo 7u. Auto postoji samo jos od lose plastike. Komande za radio i klimu nisu osvijetljene, sta god da koristis moras da uklonis pogled sa puta, elektronika je spora i izgubi se, komande za radio i klimu su na pogresnim jestu... kad vozis i hoces da koristis display stalno zakacis na komande od radio/klimu i izbaci tr iz programa... mislim da je ovo moj zadnji golf
Take 10 minutes more and find 25 more...i was looking forward for this car but now not much but i like this colour. But no knobs stupid. Learn from Mercedes but their cars are too expensive. So i Will keep my old car.
Having test driven this same model you don't need buttons, just configure the car to your liking on the touch screen and your sorted. Really no need for buttons, once you understand the car.
The new Golf 8 has electronics that are total sh1t. I know because i have one and there are at least 93 different functions that do not work, or work intermittently, or not at all. This is before I even consider the total sh1t that is we connect ,although it should be called wee connect because it really does take the p1ss. I would like 5 minutes alone in a room with the moron who designed the electronics in this car. I also object quite strongly to being an unpaid beta tester for VW because they could not be bothered to do the job properly in the first place.

@@piee683 I have a 7DSG and when driving in comfort mode it's not bumpy. A little bit in sport mode yes but not annoying.

Pre-packaged lens wipes are handy to have in a car these days to clean your car's screens ,your phone,glasses and piano black surfaces

Skoda generally have a better price to performance than VW because Czechia have a cheaper living wage than Germany, Spain and Portugal. The margins on the Golf were already slim so with the cost cutting exercise VW tried to cheapen the Golf without people really noticing but it's there alright. For one it's far cheaper to programme software for HAV than to have physical buttons. It's cheaper to use the same platform than to develop a brand new one or exisitng one.
I've also noticed they've removed the rubber seal on the doors (not door frames). My old Skoda Fabia even has this !

Regarding the display of the navigation system at night! Are you sure that the car has set the switch to automatic? There are three little lines in the navigation screen in the lower left corner - if you click on them you can set whether it should be automatic, day or night.
Maybe you just missed that, or maybe I did and you have already checked it.

I do agree with you that cars are getting a bit more pricey. Depending on the country though, certain cars have certain prices that are light years apart. Same car in my country, Cyprus, starts at 21.900 euros, which by the way is a very very good price for a 150ps car. VW group has been the top seller in Cyprus for a few years now, mainly because their prices are great. But my issue is that more and more automobile manufacturers make more and more high performance cars, which become unaffordable, even when 5 years old. So if this car in Germany starts at 30.000 euros, you might as well save some money and buy the Golf R at 40.000 euros.
The video showed clearly that VW is cutting costs, because of the Diesel Software gate and the investments in EV's. Cheaper plastics, the hydraulic stuts disappeared, use of the old MQB platform, etc. These are only the visible items. I am afraid there are even more not visible use of cheap materials, which will affect the reliability. The new models of Renault (Capture) and Peugeut (2008) use better visible materials than the more expensive VW T-Roc. If a spend so much money, than it should be visible.
I am positive about my current Tiguan2, but if VW does not change there strategy, it will be my last VW.
Most of the things you've mentioned are just irrelevant and unnecessarily noted as part of the criticism. If you really don't fancy them, just buy the Golf 7 and you'll have all of them. Volkswagen have tried to improve the previous Golf generations by bringing this one to another higher greater level, but still keeping some main cornerstone headline typical Golf features, famous from the previous models. To be honest, they have done a great job with that. There would always be advantages and disadvantages with everything you do or buy, especially with cars. However, on this Golf 8 the positives are much more than the negatives. Therefore, I do not agree with these 25 things you dislike, but, hey, everybody has an opinion! Interestingly, your "worst thing" (no cup holder roller cover, #16) was never included on North American models, apart from the Golf R. I believe this was because our versions still had handbrakes. Americans won't notice this change! I also don't get the "no knobs" hate, since almost everything on the car can be controlled using the physical buttons on the steering wheel.

I agree with almost all your criticisms. Some of the parts have gone down in quality compared to the Mk7/7.5 generation. If some of the interior quirks remain for the more pricey GT(I/D/E) and R models, it would be pretty disappointing!
Hi Josip. In terms of functionality should I go for the A3 instead of the Golf? Also, do you consider the standard composition media screen on the Golf with physical buttons a better option despite the lack of navigation and voice commands?
I would avoid Golf 8 after fellow subscriber had multiple problems and return it early and swapped for Up GTI. Id rather take Audi.

Nice video, I agreed many of them. And VW removed many of stowing area in the car. Sunglasses holder on the top, little box on the left side of steering wheel and drawers under the seat etc. I can see too much cost cutting details on mk8. And I’m thinking standart digital instruments are really costly for VW.
There's lots of new additional stowage which were omitted from the video.

Watching the video again you are clearly not used to the MK 7 either as some things have not changed, like the charging point in the center console. Using this with an adapter will give you access to old USB versions.
Also Golf 7 had hard plastic on rear doors. Main thing in the interior that they messed up are the carpeting in glove box and the cup holder area.
It should be there.. Since golf 4 or 5 is there, pretty convenient, now you have SOS buttons if you will but on the road to drive safely in the summer you need the glasses compartment being blinded by the sun , it's been there since the beginning on year 2000 I think..cutting costs really is disappointing, I was considering the mark 8 golf , but the more I looked at the new mark 8 golf I'm more inclined to go for the mark 7 golf which is cheaper, and there are considerable discounts.. At 18-19k € you get almost all the features with the 1.5 gasoline engine and confortline version manual gearbox .. And to top it all it lacks the gas strout on the engine bonnet..that is really cheap fom VW, love the golf..I have a mark 6 golf which it appears better built and with independent suspension on the rear which makes all the difference , don't think to go higher then golf 7.5 version of golf eventually if they don't fix these problems.. If road comfort and noise insulation were my key aspects in choosing, do you think these 2 things where the new one is better, would be sufficient to choose it over the previous generation? And how would it compare to the current generation of A3? ( Not the new upcoming one)
The main problem is that the (well equipped) price sits somewhere in between cars like the CEED, Corolla and Mazda 3 and stuff like the 1 Series and A-Class. So it is in it's own price range. It drives about as good as the luxury c-segment cars, but the interior and some of the refinement tweaks are just not there. I have driven most of these cars at least once, and the Golf is really in between these 2 categories. It feels a lot more comfortable and refined than the Corolla etc. but it is just not there with an A3 or 1-Series.
The Mk 8 is cost cutting exercise, no bonnet gas struts. The most notable are - no covers on the door handles for the key lock, no storage compartment on the drivers side and in some models no sun glass compartment), no covers in the central compartments (drinks area and charging self), under the bonnet is not painted, in some models the glove compament is not lined, some of the plastics in the dash feel cheap, and lets face it a digital display is a lot cheaper to manufacture than physical buttons and the engineers did not take account of safety implications of using these touch system when driving.
Compared to my Golf 7 i would say this car makes no sense 😂 For example why did they removed the gas springs for the engine hood? There are so many things which I don’t like. So I totally agree to your review in this video!

I'm agree with you, I own a Golf 7 Facelift and I prefer to the new 8.
Imam neki osjećaj da će golf 7.5 još neko vrijeme držati visoku cijenu jer osmica ima neke svoje prednosti, ali ima puno mana za koje mislim da ljudi balkana neće moći preći preko. Ali opet će biti onih koji će reći golf je golf. Neželim nikoga vrijeđati, dapače i sam vozim sedmicu karavana i odličan je. Ali osmica je čudna, napraviala je 2 koraka naprijed ali i 1 nazad.

Yes, its rather disappointing. They have cut corners in visible areas. I have always chosen VW because of its high standard of finish. My 2015 GTI is better finished. I am also bitterly disappointed that in South Africa there is no manual option.

Njemci su poceli stediti na sve strane.
On Variant the boot opening is shit. Most annoying is the lack of cup holder cover. 100% agree. This is the most horrible part pf the interior and its so close to the driver

It feels sort of unfinished/unpolished product with a lot of cost cutting. Sadly that didnt cut cost for customer, Golf costs for what it offers.

Forza223 Bowe I have an mk7 the manual version........ the clucth broke at 30000 kms, the sunroof acrylic housing cracked,lots of interior noise specially from the cover for the trunk behind the back seats, dusty break pads........ but you should really love golfs to get one...........and almost forgot pricey maintenance

Malo postaju preskupe ove kutije. heeheh Gledam akciju Audija, 20k eura za A3 hečbek i sedan sa 35 TFSI. Bolje uzeti to nego ovog Golfa plastikanera iako je noviji. A novi A3 je po meni ekstra izašao, mnogo bolje nego A klasa i ona rugoba serija 1.

Looks to me like some serious cost cutting! I really don’t see this as a premium car anymore! I just don’t get the new Golf because the Seat Leon is much cheaper but doesn’t look/feel less of a car and the new A3 is much nicer inside but if you work them out spec for spec no more expensive.
Feature-by-feature the A3 is incomparably more expensive than the Golf. Likewise, a fully specced Golf has more features than the new Leon (multi link rear suspension, head up display)

Agreed. Though cars like the Corolla or Mazda 3 are way worse in this case. I could barely sit behind myself in the new Corolla, and I am 178 cm.....

@@blackcrackmanace Gentelmans, with exactly same equipments the Golf costs 4000 more then Mazda 3, please double check the equipments list(see configurators), as base Mazda 3 contains a lot of features which on the Golf must be payed extra.. Both are great cars anyway.

No hood shock as on Mk7, no cloth on pillar covers as on Mk4, Mk5, Mk6 and Mk7, no cover on water bottle holder, lots of cheap hard plastics, unlike on Mk4,5,6,7, no baseless rear view mirror as on Mk 7.5. in general Mk4 has better materials inside! And mk7.5 is a better car.
Mk4 was a huge leap forward for the Golf with the tdi 90pk and tdi red 110pk in the late 90's . Also good materials and quality. Now these days VW uses cheap plastic in all there car types...even the latest type Taigo.

Nice video, I agree with your dislikes. I thought you will also complain abougt the light switch, too. I think it is terrible, but I have never tried a Golf 8 yet. I have to admit I don't really like the design either and the lcd instrument. I think my next car will be a Golf 7.5 then I will probably switch to another brand :)

I've thought about this for a long time. I had a mk1 Focus for 6 years and yes, while parts of its interior trim seemed built by a toddler, guess what? It was 100% reliable mechanically.
Compared to German junk, which have this veneer of being well built, but get past 100,000kms, and no matter how vigilant you've been with servicing, major engine problems WILL occur.
So lets take this new Focus, so ok it does not quite pass the centre console rigidity test, but it's more spacious inside, is nicer to drive, and is more refined at speed. Saunders conveniently ignores the last aspect when every other review has stated that the Golf 8 has a fair bit of wind and suspension noise.
So, unless you're hell bent on having digital controls, give the Focus a try.

@@paulb8153 I have a Golf 7 which has less hard plastics, a felt lined glovebox and gas struts so, in terms of premium features and materials, the 7/7.5 is evidently superior to the new generation. What is more, the "old" 6th gen Golf even had soft-touch rear doors.
Just checked the car at a VW dealer last week. The touch control panel is not practical It’s a mess. I can’t believe VW people did this mistake. As an owner of golf 6 and 7 I waited so much for 8, but I will go for other car. By the way civic 2020 returned to physical buttons...

simply VW is laying down Golf for ID.3 electrical car the future of the mark and the new Icon i think ...they make it worst this time for that reason ...also all these technologies on board you should be a little smart to understand all features ...not for simple people i think who are familiar with physical buttons.honnestly im not fan of all the technologies like you are using smartphone on cars with the digital screen and its not realy good for safety to be focus on that while driving ...easy to get accident .

It’s disgraceful the lack on insight, the screens and infotainment systems are just an afterthought. The materials look cheap and nasty. The styling is lazy, not much effort put in at all. I have a mk7 golf R and I think it’s wonderful, the 7.5 is even better, but this Mk 8 is a big bag of lazy, cheap, shite.

Vozim ga vec 7 dana i kajem se sto sam prodo 7u. Auto postoji samo jos od lose plastike. Komande za radio i klimu nisu osvijetljene, sta god da koristis moras da uklonis pogled sa puta, elektronika je spora i izgubi se, komande za radio i klimu su na pogresnim jestu... kad vozis i hoces da koristis display stalno zakacis na komande od radio/klimu i izbaci tr iz programa... mislim da je ovo moj zadnji golf

Having test driven this same model you don't need buttons, just configure the car to your liking on the touch screen and your sorted. Really no need for buttons, once you understand the car.
The new Golf 8 has electronics that are total sh1t. I know because i have one and there are at least 93 different functions that do not work, or work intermittently, or not at all. This is before I even consider the total sh1t that is we connect ,although it should be called wee connect because it really does take the p1ss.
I would like 5 minutes alone in a room with the moron who designed the electronics in this car.
I also object quite strongly to being an unpaid beta tester for VW because they could not be bothered to do the job properly in the first place.
It's normal for new cars.
