10/10. Most underrated A7X song. Masterpiece!
Nah, it definitely is underrated, but not the most. Until the end is more underrated.
@@patriciapeters7604 almost every songs on diamonds in the rough are underrated, damn i love them all
@@myucelll true, and me too!
It's not that underrated, it's a lot of a7x fans favorite song, including me 😁😁
@@Someone-eb7js same. Definitely one of my favorites.
"learn it.. and then forget it, haha."
- Synyster Gates on pop music.
ikr that part was great!
Despite not usually being very music theory heavy, pop music requires skill, just different skills. Almost all the singers are great. Most bad pop singers are mostly just people who became famous some other way and decided to do pop afterwards.
Also the production is very nuanced. The producers have to know their audience, how it will sound in different acoustics and how to make it stand out in different environments.
@@MrAllallalla well its not an excuse for the shit they are doing... I'll mention one thing that ruins your skill thing, its called voice tuning. No need to sing any more, just make a noice and computer will fix it for you....
@@MrAllallalla great singer... Yea sure lol
@@gregtheflyingwhale Unfortunately, that isn't as egregious as you make it out to be.
Auto tune and similar can be used to make *minute* changes in poor intonation, but any more than *very small* changes, and it becomes unusable for this purpose. What happens when you artificially pitch shift an organic voice to a large degree, it starts to turn very robotic, like T Pain does for effect. It absolutely still requires the person to have vocal skill. It will *not* make a bad singer sound like a good singer. Unless the person sounds like someone talking through a fan, they aren't using pitch correction to a large extent.
Virtually *all* modern day vocalists will use pitch correcting somewhere of some sort. Even A7X ( *GASP* )
It's because something as seemingly mundane as room temperature can throw off intonation. Auto tune exists to combat this.
It *cannot* (Believably) add even a half step to a persons range. That's how little it can actually be used.
It's really obvious but it has to be said.
Portnoy fucking killed it in this track.
he really was the perfect replacement for jimmy especially for this album especially for this masterpiece
I think Brooks fits the band way more than portnoy does for everything besides this album. No one could've topped portnoy for this album, and especially this track specifically.
Siege Moo exactly man brooks is the perfect match but for this album portnoy did exactly what they needed from a drummer
N0FC I think Portnoy was the only one who could've taken what Jimmy left and turned it into what he would've wanted. Brooks wouldn't have been able to do that. Aaron wouldn't have either. Portnoy just fits here.
Yea. I love and miss Jimmy as much as the next guy but I think Nightmare is my favorite album. It's not as straight ahead as Hail to the King, which I also really love, I don't understand all the hate for it, but this has all boxes checked. It's catchy enough, it's proggy enough, and it's mixed really well. I didn't care for the mixing or the experimental nature of The Stage. Was a major disappointment in my opinion.
@@djjazzyjeff1232 Really? What about the mixing didn't you like? I thought it was mixed very well and with dynamics in mind instead of being constantly loud. It felt more human like despite being an album themed around AI and the Universe.
The fact one of revs biggest inspos was portnoy and portnoy struggled with one of Jimmy's demos is such an achievement for Jimmy! He'd be so shocked and proud to learn that one of his favourites struggled to play his parts
Literal proof that jimmy is one of the greats
A7X and Mike Portnoy = one of the best collabs in metal!
At 3:02 when Syn says he “couldn’t do it forever” it makes you realize that even the best in the game struggle, practice and work until it’s right. It may sound like a simple guitar riff but it was clearly much more complex. Love this song so much.
He's a genius on the guitar and humble enough to admit when something was hard for him. I love this band.
I completely agree. And I relate at 7:19 where they’re talking about the hi hat pattern that Portnoy had an issue with. I can play this song but that part used to always give me trouble and I thought I was just an idiot. But if Mike Portnoy had an issue with it, I feel so much better lol
I learned this riff the other day because I knew it would be a good noodler for picking skills and had the same issues, getting that 5/2 pulloff to ring out on the 3rd string, stay ringing nicely, and then to borrow that same index finger to fret the 4th string by rolling it over, and then a second later letting the 3rd string mute with the flesh of that same finger. So that kind of crap is how guitar is played, somehow. Took a few days to get it right, and that's all I had to do.
Love the self-deprecation here lol...."clusterfuck" "it was a disaster", yet if you were an Avenged fan listening to this the first time you were completely stunned and blown away.
listening to this song for the first time in high school expanded my puny brain, i still love it as much if not more today
I'm never gonna get tired of emphasizing how amazingly great this song is
It's one of the few songs I consider to be perfect
4:27 wow...just wow. that's one the most beautiful parts of music i've ever heard
Yea, i thought that as well. Like "damn, that sounds really good, just that alone would be awesome to have"
@@MilanovicChiller I had goosebump .

Id pay for a whole documentary of these breakdowns man
I absolutely love these breakdowns! Thank you for them

@@homeinvasion. With all six stones, I can simply snap my fingers, they would all cease to exist. I call that mercy.
Thank you thanos
Watching them talk about Jimmy is always heartbreaking because you can see in their eyes how much they miss him. I couldn't imagine how difficult it must have been to finish this album without him. I'm just so glad that he is still a part of every song, whether through vocals or drumming or songwriting. RIP The REV, always and foREVer
Seriously, I genuinely miss him and never knew or met him. Can’t imagine how it is for them, they were best friends since Junior High.
Portnoy’s drums were killer. Jimmy’s writing is brilliant.
Your producer was awesome.
Glad they said dream theater, huge influence on their style.
Portnoy is such a beast, I've always loved the drumming to this album, his own personal touches really did it for me as a dt fan lol.
I wish they had played Jimmy's isolated vocals in the bridge. =(
Still, it's weird to think that so many of those lyrics that seem to be about The Rev were actually written by him…
Almost none of the lyrics were written by him. These days, they almost never write lyrics until they’re in the studio. That’s why they didn’t use almost any of his vocals on this entire album. They were all incoherent mumbles that were placeholders for the melody until lyrics were written. Go listen to the demos if you wanna hear what they’re like.
@@ExternusArmy Dude, Matt straight up said Jimmy wrote a lot of the lyrics for this song
@Kyle, they make everything extremely confusing. The song itself was written mostly by Brian during Pinkly Smooth many many years ago. He was the one that cane up with the piano parts for this, as well as the Beast and the Harlot intro (which was originally a piano song). In fact, Brian said he originally wrote Fiction for Pinkly Smooth until they eventually used it for A7X. Brian and Jimmy wrote parts of it together when they would get drunk and work on it together years before Nightmare (this is what they said in interviews). From the demo version which a small portion can be found (it has Jimmy’s original vocals), the lyrics are non-existent. That’s because Matt usually helps write most of the lyrics as they need to compliment Matt’s voice. They always credit everyone for everything they do, but it’s not cut and dry.
@@ExternusArmy I read an interview in which Johnny said that Jimmy wrote like 60% of the album. Obviously not all of the lyrics were ready and polished when he passed away, but he definitely did a lot for this album. Brian also said that he has a recording of an acoustic version of So Far Away, when the sound was still in the early stages, where he and Jimmy himself sing. It is almost ironic to know that much of this album is his thing and not a tribute to him.
Paçoqueiro, exactly like you’re saying, the story is difficult to piece together. I’ve listened to countless interviews to determine that Brian is the main writer of Fiction, only to have Jimmy as a co-writer. Obviously everything is collaborative but their process has always allowed Brian or Jimmy to bring complete songs to the band. Johnny says Jimmy wrote most of the album out of respect, but after a million interviews, you learn what they specifically wrote. For instance, Matt wrote the song Nightmare entirely on his own with virtually no contribution for anyone , including The Rev (only Syn wrote the solo as usual). He brought the song to the Rev afterwards but recorded it all on his phone. They just have so much respect for their own bandmates that they will never ever put them down. Truly respectable guys.
Hopefully you guys are reading comments. Can you touch on songs like Trashed and Scattered, Blinded in Chains, Victim, or any song from Diamonds in the Rough. (The Fight, Tension, Demons) You guys create the best bridges I've ever heard in many of your songs and want to know the thoughts behind the elongated bridge in BLINDED IN CHAINS, vocal melody on verse + coming up with such powerful lyrics in the chorus on VICTIM, and how you guys were able to create many melodic transitions between chorus/bridge/solo/chorus in many songs from City of Evil to the White Album. Thanks.
I fucking love Blinded in Chains! Especially the bridge!
They always read comments
Thats why they do save me
Those songs you mentioned are my favorites!! Victim and Save Me were my fav outta nightmare album, blinded in chains, str of the world and wicked end are my fav outta CoE. and of course, Tension, demons and Until thr End on DitR are my fav!! They definitely need to do more of these episodes, especially those songs!
san you hit the nail on the head with all the songs man classic tunes even the ones from the diamonds in the rouge album cant wait to see what they have next
Love Trashed and Scattered🖤
Man I really miss Jimmy. Their sombre tone when listening to his vocals kinda had me on the verge of tearing up.
those ‘tonight we all day young’ lyrics are super eerie considering Jimmy wrote them.
3:46 Matt crying for Jimmy 😢 that's sad!
123 ACMBM then you can see about 10 seconds later syn says something and you can see in Matt’s eyes he went back to that place and his speaking voice changed.
Looked like Matt was about to break when he puffs his cheeks and it’s like syn subtlety noticed and changes the topic by bringing up the violins instantly and Matt goes yeah me too and just never goes back to that place. It’s seriously heart breaking
I've always wanted footage of them recording nightmare! Finally we get it. I've always wanted to see Jimmy in the studio during Nightmare
please do Strength Of The World next !
yeeesss
Omri Madgar yesssssssssasasss
Hell yeah! I'd love to see that one done.

This song was the perfect way to end that whole album, and it is my absolute favorite song. Thank you guys for sharing the breakdowns and the music
Instead of posting what song you want next can you appreciate the breakdown that you are currently watching
DD TRUUUEEEE
Kids are never satisfied haha
they're going to pick songs they want anyway. doubt commenting will make a difference
Thank you!
No
Do blinded in chains I would like to here you talk about blinded in chains off your album city of evil.
Brent Lavage yesssss anything city of evil
why does this comment sound like it was made by a robot?
what song do you want Brent?
@@tyleroneil6225 trashed and scattered, probably
@@topcrakhead Think it was made by a machine? Why do you think it by a machine?
I knew this would be too emotional for them to say much about it. This song makes emotional every time I hear it, so I don’t even blame them.
Please do Fiction. It would be awesome if you guys decided to do that song! One of the Knife Master's best creations!
They'll probably cry a river when breaking down Fiction..so they won't touch it I guess..
@@darksunshine9313 who wouldn't cry? I think there's a probability... Hope they do it!
YES PLEASE
I think that's a little bit harder for them to breakdown fiction.
Rev wrote it himself so they probably will never do it🥺
they should do any of the city of evil songs all of those songs are jewels but this series is great none of the less
I love their ballads. Save Me and Exist are probably my favorite songs.
You have to play Save me on the next tour.
Yyyeeeesssss
@@RP-bf3st They already did Save Me live on Nightmare tour.
R P They’ve played it live before.
@@Omega-fb9ji Oh lol I was unaware sorry.
@@RP-bf3st It is definetly possible. They're using backing tracks on all songs including strings etc, so it shouldn't be a problem
M. I. A, Fermi Paradox or Second Heartbeat next please
Haven’t seen anyone recommend a breakdown of heretic, it’s definitely one of my favorite and most underrated songs.
Apoyo total! Heretic is the best from HTTK, and it has lots of layers to look at one by one.
Yes. I love that song. Heavy Megadeth influence!
HERETIC BLOOD. One of my favorite songs for sure!
sometimes i forget how influential jimmy really was to the songs he helped write, because holy hell they are some of the best things i've heard from the band.
seeing Jimmy with his triple bass kit with a rare footage, it's fucking awesome!
That switch up at 4:25 was angelic. the guitar and vocals go so well together. Crazy to imagine the Rev writing this but never hearing it fully realized.
This song really is a musical masterpiece
5:24
Whyyy, Matt? Now I can't unhear James's voice wailing that verse 😭
The guys look so sad in the writing process videos and Mike looks like he’s playing his absolute heart out cuz he obviously knows what it means to them ❤️
It would be so cool to hear The Rev's demos or see more footage of him from the studio like Almost Easy!
There’s a Buried Alive demo as well as a small portion of the Fiction demo floating around that has The Rev’s original vocals attached.
“Jimmy vocals” part got me! 😭. Both M shadows and syn looked sad talking about it. 🥵... we miss you jimmy!
Jimmy will foREVer lives in our heart!!!!
A little piece a heaven....i love you avenged sevenfold...please
I really hope they do this one. By far my fav song
Hadn't thought about that track - definitely a good choice for a breakdown video
They did cover this song in more length in another documentary.
They've done a "making of" video about this track. Don't think it'll be worth making another on. A lot of their self titled has a bunch of studio footage available to watch.
The part where "MIKE PORTNOY shines..." the part with Hi-Hat, and Syncopated RIDE, is an example of how PREPARED MIKE is, because when it supposed to be like it was ORIGINALLY recorded MIKE NAILS IT... and when there's space for him SHINE then we see MIKE doing it without prejudice for the music peace... it was so nice that DREAM THEATER was honoured mentioned, and the "synthetic choir" was a nice way to describe what was happening ... the HIGHEST POINT for me was when on the CONTRARY MOTION "popped" out because it's a very handy musical tool, and to see you guys soloing the tracks make it very easy to follow up and understand how is it like when applied to AVENGED SEVENFOLD songs !!! THANKS FOR THIS VIDEO !!! WELL DONE !!!
It's crazy to me how much of this was thrown together in the studio, not planned in advance. This is probably my favorite song from A7X for so many reasons, but mostly just how well it's written. Usually writing this good takes serious planning, but man did they pull it off.
Though the general idea is kinda not concorded and it's kinda obvious just by paying attention. This song's really really epic but also it's not written with very tight, overly complex harmonies and unisons
They had original chords, which they struggled to record with proper harmonies because Rev's chords are infamously difficult to adapt because he comes up with usual drummer stuff that're a bit weird for the rest .
Awesome stuff guys, keep ‘em coming.
Also Portnoy with the Kobe jersey ftw!
Mike Portnoy + one of my favourite song of all time from one of my Favourite Band. Thank You!
I love it when these guys get to relive and talk about Jimmy and the way he operated on camera, you really get to see their love for him, and what he meant to them, without them ever saying it directly. Really special that.
I’ll always remember seeing them live in 2010 and being directly inform of Brian when he played So Far Away, he had his shades on, but I swear I could see his lips twitching like he was holding back the tears. Seeing that actually began to make me weep!
I’m very grateful for this song. It’s a collab between the rev and mike at their peak. It’s a blessing
4.28 is just beautiful dude, love it😍
I had no idea Jimmy's voice sang on this tack...wow T_T
Edit:thanks for the likes guys, foREVer always🤙❤️
In the album booklet all his lyrics are in red. The only thing he actually says in this song is "Skull" at the opening. Matt says in this vid he had to redo all the other vocals cause you couldn't make it out.
@@bad72690 thats actually like a reference to the bible. All of Jesus' words in the bible were in red. Cool that they did that
This is by far my favorite A7X song.
Sheer musicianship layered with love, power and intensity in every note played in this masterpiece .
You can feel the raw- talent and fiery musical prowess in every transition of rhythm and chords, a true work of art that could only be crafted by a group of people that are wholeheartedly synced one to another on the flaming fields of the creative process .
I have been binge watching these breakdowns for six hours now.
Thank you.
this song reminds me why this band has a special place in my soul
I grew up to A7x, haven't listened to them in a big while but watching this almost made me shed a tear, I really appreciate you guys, you helped a lot us survive the days that felt like its the end of the world, much love.
Your voice sound much better Shadows! Great episode!
0:16 I love the smile of M. Shadows XD
This is the best song ever made by A7X. The "Help me find my way" section is the most beautiful thing A7X ever recorded. Sounds heavily influenced by Dream Theater, and that is a good thing.
There is so much emotion, and history behind their songs and I love it.
One of the best songs ever written. Period.
Blessed to have seen the first live performance of this song since 2011
Save me is simply a masterpiece! Everything about it is soo good! The lyrics especially are just like a beautiful poem..
The composition of Save Me reminds of Bohemian Rhapsody..I know it doesn't make any sense but I feel the same emotion listening to both of em, feels like I am on a beautiful journey..both these songs take me somewhere else...pure poem!! 😌😌😌
the best content on youtube ever. Thanks for this!
THANK YOU for breaking down my absolute favorite piece by you guys. I could never quite put together in my mind what made this composition so special (aside from its pure length and madness). The piece that really drove it home for me was finally seeing how two legendary drummers' visions blend together - Jimmy's kick patterns, Mike's cymbals - to make for so many memorable sections of "ooo, that was fucking tasty."
I'm glad you guys stuck with this song and didn't scrap it. I've always loved the longer and more experimental songs like this, and this one's one of my favorites. It's like an auditory adventure, an experience more than a song. I know you guys have been working to cut filler out of songs, making them more concise and reducing unneeded space, but I'll always appreciate it when you let your creativity run wild and break convention. That's always when something special happens.
This has been my favorite Avenged song for a long time and this makes me very happy lmao
You guys have a lot of incredible and iconic songs, but, this one is a masterpiece
This song isn't just a ordinary song. The makeup and the sound and harmony is so beautiful it's a fucking MASTERPIECE, you can tell Matt really likes this song.
They always put heart, soul and passion to EACH song, hard or easy, short or 15 minutes like "Exist", find a song that they didn't put mad amount of work in 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤.
They should play Save Me live again, it'd be insane to watch
I wanna see Brooks interpretation of this
Your wish came true. They are doing it on this leg of their tour.
fuuuuuuuuucccccccckkkkk.....now i really really really need the orchestra with vocals part. Hell, i want individual tracks and experiment with different combos (drums+orchestra+back vocals or something). I would pay for that.
3:30 is really sad. Just watching them think about the fact that the lyrics are about Jimmy, along with how pretty that section is. Really beautiful
I wish you could buy albums in a modular form like this, to isolate each musician and really get to grips with their contribution.
A true masterpiece. This song became my very favorite one.
I think they eventually cover up all the songs in all their albums. They're just going in an unorthodox sequences like they always do, but still fcking amazing.
I still belive this is the best song this song is sooo beautifully written designed and executed I mean this song is 11 mins long but you cant even feel bored for 1 second listening to this song...
4:28 is my favorite part. Thanks for soloing the guitar and voice, it’s beautiful
Do Until the End, easily one of the best Sevenfold songs ever written 🤘🤘
Yess ! That's what I wanted to say ! I love Until the End ! 🤘😍
Dont change the way you think of me continue the lyrics
We’re from the same storyyyy
5:40 what i waiting for
Amazing breakdown
Never has a song made such an impact in my life. Hearing the break down opens it up even more
I can't even begin to imagine how hard it must be for you guys to breakdown the songs on Nightmare. Thank you so much for this one.
R.I.P JIMMY SULLIVAN (THE REV)
Another amazing Breakdown Video! Love the content guys, so happy to see one of my favorite songs :)
This series has really reignited my love of A7X. Even with my Synyster Custom hanging on the wall, you slowly drift to new music.
Love you guys
maybe jimmy might want this to be another a little piece of heaven with a lot of layers and lenghtly song.
I was really looking forward to see part 2, just as awesome as the first. I hope someday you'll release the demo of the song so we can hear Jimmy's drums on it and what is was like at first, thinking of what you guys did with Waking The Fallen Resurrected!
There is a demo on the internet of Jimmy singing the "He maybe out of his mind but some day you will find" but is only a snippet of the song. Also, you can watch these videos early if you just join their fan club
Ciarán Howard Yes I know that! I’m actually talking about the « full » song, I heard the snippet a little while ago. Thank you though!
Can you put the link of the demo song please? I cant find it xD
@Asaf A. Rada B. woah, thanks you!
Anyone close their eyes and imagine Jimmy singing half of this song? You can just tell what parts he would have sang on
Thank you so much for this brake down, this has to be my all time favorite by A7x and I love knowing more about the deep story that goes with it.
Jimmy as truly a master at his craft!
I started crying right when Matt mentioned Jimmy writing lyrics that he didn't know would be sung about him one day. I hate being the person that's like "a celebrity death strongly affected me", but it's true.
My fiance showed me avenged sevenfold, like deep into it, and after he died this music really applied to everything I was feeling
this is so awesome. thanks for the video! looking forward for more.

I haven't listened to their entire catalog yet, but this song is a masterpiece and might be Avenged Sevenfold's best track in my opinion. I'm getting chills listening to it right now. Excellent.
Hace 6 años llevo escuchando esta canción. Siempre me gusto por la gran composición que tiene. Una obra de arte al máximo
Man mike portnoy really did jimmy justice and more. Phenomenal drumming
Now I know what I'm jamming to in the car today!
Anyone else just admiring the sheer beauty of Syns face! Dude is a work of art. Not to mention what an amazing guitarist and musician he is. Also these breakdowns have reestablished my undying love for this band
My absolute favourite song of all time, the isolated vocals was one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard in my life, I am so glad you did this song breakdown.
I live for these breakdown episodes
Sooo INSPIRING!!! Save me is a beast!
Oh my heart, you can see the sorrow in their eye’s and the immense pain that is still there. You well in my opinion, they are giving Jimmy continuous credit which is beyond deserved but they seem to be aware not to go to far with it. I get the vibe they’re holding back how much they really want to talk about him, his talent, and how they still love and miss him extremely.
Honestly, these breakdown videos are beyond amazing. After hearing layer by layer, you just appreciate the songs even more. Like, at one point I'll be like "oh there's a jimmy high note here, gotta pay attention", something you wouldn't normally catch. Keep doing these guys!
