When I first saw Richard Dawson was back, and it totally caught me by surprise one morning, it was like seeing an old friend again;-) It may have been short-lived, but it was truly a delight to have him back!
I have read stories regarding the problems with Dawson during the height of the show, that he kept wanting more control and a wage increase. Despite all that, he remains, in my mind, the best host of any game show, and, of course, the most affectionate toward the contestants. He was the king. RIP Richard.
It was great to see Richard back on this incarnation as I didn't get to see much of his first run as I wasn't born until July 1982, but getting to see him in this run got me hooked on Family Feud and although he's been gone for over a decade now, he most certainly won't be forgotten by me.
Truly a class act in game shows, and a great comedian (the very reason Match Game was a hit to begin with), and downright wittier than any other. We will miss you Richard. RIP Richard Dawson (1932-2012).
SuperPat88 Needless to say 2012 wasn’t a good year for me because Richard Dawson, Dick Clark and Don Cornelius were the 3 MC’s that made me want to pursue a career in TV.
Anyone who had a chance to watch this '94 run of Feud probably remember the DelVecchio family. IMO, they were the most memorable family from this short-lived incarnation of Feud. They were fun people.
It's a shame none of my networks in the Ames/Des Moines, IA area carried Richard Dawson's Family Feud 1994 or Doug Davidson's Nighttime Price is Right. It would have been great to watch for me back then.
@puttputtking I like Ray Combs too, but I believe some of the problems that the show and Ray Combs had could have been prevented if Goodson put his ego aside and asked Richard to come back. Richard cared about Family Feud just as much as Bob Barker cared about The Price Is Right. None of the other hosts cared about Feud as much as Dawson.
I do think Ray was starting to tire of it by the time he was let go. But he cared deeply about the show, everywhere he went, every interview he did he plugged the show, he had a lot to do with the success that era had.
Doug was on the Feud for Soap Week during the 94-95 version and Dawson did mention Doug hosting TPIR and I do think that Melody was on there, too since she is popular on Y&R
It's on the circuit...the episode is Schneidmiller/Stewart. I've heard it's the debut, but at least two other episodes have been claimed as such, so I don't know when it really aired. Interesting note...one of the contestants on this show was on Match Game in 1977. She won the Super Match with Richard, and even brought the autographed MG card with her.
This version of Family Feud was taped at Studio 33 (Bob Barker Studio) CBS Television City same place where The Price Is Right was tapes. Ray Combs version was taped there from 1988-94.
Wow he’s back and he’s got a standing ovation and the set is beautiful and I want those cbs curtains they are beautiful and I glad they fired ray combs
@telewatcher89 True. I think the Feud was created for Dawson, because if you watch Match Game you'll see most everybody wanted to match with Richard. That's why they started spinning the wheel so other celebrities could have a chance to guess. Since almost everybody wanted to match with Richard, I think Family Feud was possibly created for Dawson and that's why he comes off as a good host, and according to a lot of people the best.
I also want to say that it was such an honor to hear Gene Wood say Richard Dawson's name once again, and also, Gene Wood and Richard Dawson were close friends for years and I'm sure that Dawson does miss Gene Wood. Richard Dawson, The King of the Feud, Ray Combs started out good, but then he got too overrated, Louie Anderson was terrible, Karn was pretty good, but @ least the 300 point rule cameback and O'Hurley is trying to improve and as for Al Roker, he wasn't Family Feud material.
Louie Anderson actually did an ok job in first 2 seasons but in third season, he kind of exhaust and not energy Karn was good but like Ray, trouble with him occured While Al Roker and O'Hurley version, just wasn't good
Richard was great, Ray I thought was great too but by the end adding that bullseye game handcuffed him a bit, left less time for the game and his "antics" cause he had to keep it moving. But I do think he was tiring of it by the end of his run. When Richard came back his was rusty, not what he used to be, but 1994 syndication was a rough year for every show. I thought Louie was OK, but yeah he was tired of it after 3 years, Richard Karn had great energy but was a nice change from Louie's more sedate style, but it got annoying eventually. John O'Hurley not great, not horrible. Steve Harvey's doing a terrific job.
Hey there, I have one question: Now, 1st off, I was SO glad to see Dawson back hosting the Feud after almost 10 years, but, I wonder was Bob Barker so happy to see his I guess to say his old friend Richard Dawson back in the same studio where TPIR, Y&R and B&B are taped? I'll betcha that Doug Davidson, Bobbie Eakes and Melody Thomas Scott were happy to see him back on Feud once again.
I was so glad when Richard came back, he will forever be FAMILY FEUD, and plus, Ray Combs was OK, but a little too sarcastic, Louie was terrible, Karn was good and O'Hurley is doing a great job so far on Feud. and also, Richard Dawson coming back to the feud was great, but too bad the pre-emptions of the O.J. Simpson Case caused the Feud to be canned before coming back 4 years later.
O'Hurley start well but the rating start to go down on his version and it seem like he just not the suitable host in Family Feud. The rating is down to just sub 2 and it might reach the end
Actually, Richard didn't leave the show by choice. The first run of Family Feud ended in 1985. ABC dropped the show reluctantly because the show had dropped drastically in the ratings over time. The show was picked up by Viacom and went into syndication for a brief period before it fianlly went off the air.
I think (and I'm somewhat guessing cause I ahven't seen too mcuh of this season yet) that Richard jokes alot about waiting so long to come back. I've seen a promo where he said something like "all those years ago, we I left, I forgot to turn off the air conditioning, I just got the bill for $138,000." lol
@@jacquelineholliday7769 It was one of the events that led to his suicide which happened 2 years later, he did not handle getting replaced well and had other personal problems, but the show only lasted 1 more year with Dawson before being cancelled again.
exactly, he was pressured into making a big change to the show, because they risked not coming back, I heard Joanthon has sinced said he regrets the decision becuase he fears it may have contributed in part to Ray committing suicide later that year.
They should've kept this version going with Richard Dawson assuming the helm as host of F.F. cause the O.J. trial was pretty much over in the fall of 1995 when the verdict was read, and since it was over it would've brought the viewers back instantly, so it's their big ass mistake in cancelling it.
@talladegajunkie1439 Yeah right. Someone says that with every host change on the current version. The fact is Dawson was never asked to host the current version and Gene Wood was never asked to be the announcer. Dawson does need to come back now, he needed to come back in 1988. What they need now is a good decent host who's willing to host long term (and not suggest/agree to messed up changes like Louie Anderson).
I also heard that Mark Goodson wouldn't have let Dawson come back, because when Dawson first hosted, he said something like "Dawson is an a** and he'll never work for me again as long as I live." Then he dies in '92, so in '94 Jonathan Goodson (Mark's Son) decides to bring back Dawson, and I remember seeing another video on here, (I think it was Combs Finale Part 2 of 2. I'm not sure though.) Anyway, they felt like Jonathan was spitting on his father's grave when he asked Dawson to come back.
this set is way better than that junk on the current run of feud.. and the dance remix of the feud theme they used here (it was recorded around the same time as the night time price is right music)(similar sound ot it) would work great on the current show
Richard Dawson is from the South of England less than ten miles from where I live and have grown up. Why does he speak with an American accent? He left England at 23.
@telewatcher89 I liked Ray Combs though. He was funny. I'm glad he got to do a run even if he got fired by the man he was trying to replace. Although, if Richard did come back in 88 it might have prevented Ray Combs from hanging himself because him getting fired was part of the reason he hung himself. I'm glad Ray got to do some hosting on Family Feud although GSN really keeps throwing him under the bus for taking off his version.
Ray combs was great, that bullseye round what was the downfall and I love his dancing at the end of the show, problem was games shows were getting cancel left abs right in the 90s and the big three survived jeopardy, wheel of fortune, the price is right.
