the thing is, since the 1990s we had American Indian Heritige Month. this was cancelled by the Trump administration (which is the real reason why nobody observes it anymore).
the only holiday left for them is in fact, indigenous peoples day. Imagine if black history month was reduced to one day... this is what our indigenous people of north america has been having to deal with for centuries, its no wonder the few of them left wanted to live outside of the US in their indian reservations (yes, they are technically off of US soil when they are in their reservations).

Did you know that 'natives' had rituals where they would rip out the hearts of captives, who were still alive, to present them to their gods? They would do so, and feast on their limbs afterwards. They would capture their victims in unannounced night attacks, for a declaration of war did not exist in America then.
For all this talk about the atrocities the Spaniards committed, they are almost tiny in comparison to these so-called noble savages, whose entire culture revolved around atrocities. The difference between the cultures of the Spaniards and the Aztecs was, that in Spain these crimes were looked upon in disgust, while the Aztecs celebrated them. So put things into perspective, and happy Columbus Day!

They didn't do this all the time, and that's no justification for literally causing the extinction of Taino and Lucayans. The natives did fight amongst each other but didn't do anything near the shit that Columbus did to all of them. Even other European colonizers were disgusted by him, his ship mates described him as a bitter asshole and the crown removed him from governor post.

My family enslaved black folks and probably killed Indians. My family were also slaughtered by Mormons in 1858. I still hold a grudge because they stole generational wealth ( gold cattle horses and CHILDREN). They were very reluctant to air this history but have since apologized. Doesn't really help me out but at least they recognize the hurt they caused. That means something. That means we can acknowledge that we were wrong and we regret it. To me that is moral strength.

Native peoples in many countries were disrupted by European explorers and immigrants seeking asylum from tyranny. Wars were fought, many died, people lost their land, treaties were signed and some broken. Bless the explorers, the settlers and the natives. Happy Colombus Day! If native people want to celebrate with a special day that honors their heritage, petition congress, but don't try to erase history.
It's a correction of history, and taking back the honor and respect by nixing this faux "holiday". There are plenty other worthy Italians to honor in his place.

Maybe try to be honest in this video. This is a bunch of half truths and lies by omission. I like the way the author conveniently ignores that what happened after Europeans arrived in the Americas was (good or bad) the way of the world at that time, and in part still is, but to a lesser degree. Indigenous people are 100% as guilty of these practices...dont make them out to be these innocent oppressed people. When one tribe wanted (or needed) to move into a new area they killed the tribe that was currently occupying the area. Those that didnt run away from their oppressors were enslaved, raped, etc. Columbus Day should continue to be celebrated and if we want an indigenous peoples day, lets be honest about the history & maybe just pick a different day...wow, there's a thought.

The indians also wiped out the first three settlements of colonists along the eastern seaboard. The 4th landing the europeans brought rifles and more men than women. What they discovered was some of the previous settlements, the men were killed, the women were raped, and the kids were taken as slaves to help fight tribes they were at war with. There were 67 indian factions at war and slaughtering one another before the europeans landed. They practiced scalping, raping, slavery and cannibalism. READ A BOOK that was written by any one of those tribes sometime and see for yourself. All the europeans and Spainards did was bring CIVILIZATION to these barbaric/savage people. They were still hunting with spears and bows. Meanwhile the colonists had guns, built cities, build galleys, build concert halls, wrote masterpieces of music, and also learned math and the solar system.
Plus before the native americans, the Mayans were in North America first before the indians invaded and wiped them out. And before that the Stegosaurus roamed over 3500 miles and was the first dinosaur. So if anything it should be called Stegosauras/Mayans Day.

Learn a little actual history perhaps? Columbus’ original expedition was in search of a new route to established trading partners, not primarily to discover; rape; pillage & plunder new lands & peoples ~and certainly not continents.
What happened during the age of discovery cannot all be attributed to his original mission. Nor does any single country deserve all the blame for all the negative fallout or possess any Original Sin~ research why Brazilians speak Portuguese
I respect the efforts and accomplishments of both sides of the issue. Clip briefly touched on the failing of the Europeans, but absolute zero mention of the dark side of the indigenous peoples ~with or without outside interaction… warring tribes… cannibalism.

Today is the wrong day to commemorate Indigenous People Day. If anything, replace the Independence Day celebration if you must, but Columbus Day has nothing to do with Indigenous People.
