I'm fairly certain that the reason the Colour Box has no ground lift is because that would disable the 48V phantom power passthrough feature. The workaround is to carry a special XLR cable with the ground pin desoldered.
Welcome Back!!! Great Video!!! Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to seeing the new studio. Congrats on the New House.. Looking forward to grabbing one of the Teletronix TDI11
Great to have you back, Janek. Glad to hear the tour went well and congrats to you and Chelsea on the new place. Awaiting the new studio/house tour vlog. ⭐️
LOL....I live in Melbourne and didn't know they made the Teletronix units here. And now I know, but you've bought all the units. Aaaahhh such is life. Love your content.
Happy move-time flies when you're nomadic. Re: backline: as a failsafe for when the wrong bass amp/cab is provided, perhaps requesting a guitar amp as well may help approach your sound, even though you'd have to split your signal, etc.
Packaging is kinda cool? Always interesting to open a box and see the presentation and if there are any extra goodie’s. Sometimes it’s a preview of what’s to come…at the very least I love stickers lol. I like to put them on my bass case and rep the companies that I bought products from.
Janek, I picked up a very small portable battery pack that takes a normal plug. And will run a board for well over an hour. I keep it for emergency’s. Or weird power/ no easy power access. Or I’ll attach it with dual lock and make a pre powered board sometimes so it’s just plug and go.
Not sure how the current draw specs out for your board, but I recall a world touring pro whose tip was to run one of those battery power supplies. The whole reason was to avoid ground loops, dirty power, lighting interference, etc. on various stages.
The draw is the biggest issue. The stomp alone draws 1000ma, never mind all the other stuff. The cioks is normally rock solid and I’ve never had grounding issues anywhere in the world except china. I’m really not a fan of the battery stuff so far as it’s one more thing to think about and remember to charge or replace.
Janek, how do I get the most out of transcribing? Is it more of a seasoned musician thing or can I benefit from it even with only having very little knowledge of harmony?
I would love to see a new version of the Colour Box that has top mounted jacks, so u can use more than one directly next to each other. I really love the Colour Box and i want to experiment more with it on other audio sources other than bass. Its a fantastic studio tool not just a DI pedal. I kinda wish they still made their 500 series version of it. My only problem with it currently is due to my bass not the pedal itself. Im not a fan of the tone of my bass. My bass is really dark, muddy, and lacks clarity, so to get the tone im looking for i need to dime the treble on the eq section. Im getting the tone i want to get out of my bass in the end, so im happy, but i would get more out of the Colour Box with a bass that i like more than the one im currently using.
We’re you able to capture some video of any of the shows, so you can post them for us to see? It would be really cool to see some of that footage, congrats on the new house Janek!!
In regards to your pedal unboxing preferences: I’m not so overly concerned with the packaging materials such as the cloth wrap, etc, Of course, good packaging is important for shipping reasons. What I do LOVE is the associated swag. Stickers, a cool stock card with an autograph, etc. Would be killer to see your JG sticker with your branded pedal, and a little autographed card to the buyer. Just my 2 cents
I think the opening of pedal makes the consumer feel valued!! I know it sounds funny, but spending cash and just getting a plane box equals “ahhh…” It can be super simple Ann not expensive. I do love a customized bag
I heard this about the colour box v2. Seems to be very picky about its power usage. I was interested in combining it with my BP1 compact but I think I’ll look into the Rheingold BP2 further. With the mids being ‘perfected’ (IMO) in the Caveman I think the bass/treble would be enough
The ground issues were not exclusive to the Colour Box. I bypassed each pedal individually trying to locate a specific unit that was causing the issue. It didn't exist. Sadly it was anything plugged into the super sketchy power on stage that night. Even playing directly into the amp there was a ton of noise.
@@janekgwizdala Fair enough! Horrible situation to be in after meticulously planning out a board. I’m a function player and our power is also hit and miss every week - all you can do is try and not let it suck the joy out of the gig
Sorry for the 2nd comment, I think unboxing is super fun and important, getting stickers and good packaging, them crown Royal looking bags lol good instructions is important
How about a video about amps and speakers for people who use many pedals and are a huge part of their sound. Myself....I'm using a QSC 2 channel power amp with each side feeding a GK Neo 12. Definitely clean sounding on its own so not much coloration of my pedal board sound. My board does run in stereo. I want to upgrade to more power and better speakers. What would be the things us bass playing pedal loving people need to look out for? 10, 12 or 15 inch speakers? Is a power amp the best option? If not then how should the preamp section be set on a cabinet head for the true sound of our pedal board? etc.....
Wishing you well on the move! And wishing your wife well on all your your dates. 😅 Been very frustrated with my amp sound lately so I’m always stoked to hear you talk about your tone struggles and solutions. Thanks for all the inspiration!
Also - if you don’t follow already Gerald Undone made a really good video about camera paid reviews and Bark & Jack have done a great video about paid watch reviews. It’s clearly an epidemic. :-) Love what you do.
The unboxing experience is not important to me. I prefer minimal packaging that's more environmental friendly, and on my trash bin which I have to pay for. I do like stickers for my cases as some are difficult to tell which is up vs down. Also for my "abominable snowman" tumbler to tell which one is mine when out with friends. Finally, I can do without the candy.
Never been bothered about case-candy unless it actually served a purpose. Like if the box has a screen and it comes in a bag which is good for cleaning it say, or when Electro Harmonix sent their stuff out in plywood boxes; they were _really_ useful. But a box full of knick-knacks and trinkets? Not really for me; just a load of additional junk that ends up being stored in the box and stuck in storage
The JHS colourbox has no ground lift, possibly because it does not have a real transformer in the circuit (would be keen to see a gut shot of the thing, it has A LOT going on, would be surprising to have them also fit a decently sized transformer in there), so there is no real separation between your end, and the FOH. That is a differentiator between all the DI boxes you tested, some have a electronically balanced output, and some have a transformer. For a lot of situations, you might not even need balanced connections, because there are no long cable runs. Then, there are the situations where a balanced connection is an advantage, and then there are the situations where stuff is janky where you really need a galvanic separation between you and FOH and a ground lift (or a capacitor to ground), so a DI box with a transformer. By the way, that Lundahl transformer in the Teletronix DI, that is the highest of high end, small wonder it sounds as good as it does, they are highly regarded in the studio world, and it is the big version of it, which helps with bass response.
You mentioned tweaking your EQ on the JHSCB DI to get your sound in the monitor -- but doesn't that impact the FOH? Isn't FOH sound matters the most? Maybe you aend "pre-EQ" DI to FOH? That's what i do, then I can use my EQ just for my stage sound. With subs under the stage, i roll off much of the bass EQ on my pedal (or amp).
The tweaks are minor enough to where any FOH engineer should be able to handle it. The most important part of my sound is how I hear it because that’s ultimately what affects my performance the most. Note choice for instance is determined by sound, and if the stage sound is horrible I’m to give a worse performance.

Hi Janek, I am looking at my Pearl OC-07 - it is a great pedal, bought it second hand in the eighties and it is still working. Love from Vienna.
May y'all's move go as smooth as your bass grooves \m/.
Good luck with the move!
Welcome back! Hope to see you in Minneapolis
Cant wait to see the new studio when your all moved in and set up
Selling gear is a great idea, I've bought gear because of you before
I’d love to buy that DI or something that you love. That’s a clean open sounding road worthy DI

I'd be really happy with some velcro included in any pedal I'd receive. Or a patch cable, and maybe a little magnet.
Great idea!
Good luck with the move; what a pain in the arse it is to move house. Cheers!
BTW, to help you out, I just purchased two books. Cheers!
