I played the game back in 2006 and I can assure you it was well received. Lara was on the cover of every magazine and everyone was here for her comeback. It's just that the game is quite short and slightly dated by today's standards, so a lot of people outside of the Tomb Raider fandom might've forgotten about it.
It's a weird case where everyone was talking about it and playing it upon release. But over the years, people seemed to just forget about it's existence compared to other games. Maybe it was thanks to Underworld's and Anniversary's underwhelming releases that made people want to forget about Legend (and the entire franchise).
oh man, the first minute of this evokes something so visceral and nostalgic inside. this game was such a massive part of my childhood, I can't even begin to describe the feelings this soundtrack brings about
woman voices come from spectrasonics vocal planet -> world voices -> european section, 0:00 - 1:11 a voice called "welsh female no:7" and other one is called ailein duinn comes from same voice section again now I'm composing melodies using same sounds, it's gonna be nice when done :)
+H.E.X yes I created about 20 melodies using samplers. You can see them in my channel. I'm a guitarist and keyboardist but not a professional musician (first melodies I'd created were really odd but I was learning how the systems worked) just making them for fun and knowing these sample sounds cuz I'm using them like everyone else in the music world.

Or maybe because Legend allowed the player to have free will and move around while the new game took you by the hand and had signs for everything. It wasn't a tomb raiding game. It wasn't a puzzle game. It was a CORRIDOR! A FUCKING CORRIDOR! And you had to jump and climb through it but it was linear. Because the developers lost their mind while making the new tomb raider.
Then tell me this. Did you have a hard time finishing the game? Were you challenged by the puzzles" or the level design? Did you find it hard to fight the mercenaries and animals? If you did, I've got some bad news for you. If you didn't, then you probably liked the graphics and story way too much to bother with the bad gameplay.
But that's a belief so pretty much always had. Except in AoD which was a mindfuck. I don't think the new TR was good because the characters were not interesting, the combat was bland, the levels were linear, short and easy and exploring was almost none-existent. This game was a huge combination of random elements which barely fitted with each other. It tried to be everything and at the end it wasn't anything. Everything was automated. It was like a bad-written movie with a few interactive parts.
