This video was filmed July 19th, 2023 on the shores of the Seneca River in Seneca Falls, NY on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Women’s Rights movement in the USA. It was by chance that this Blessing of the Water occurred on that day.
Seneca Falls is the birthplace of the American Suffragette movement. The first women's rights convention in the United States was held at the Wesleyan Chapel in Seneca Falls, New York, on July 19 and 20, 1848.
The area is also special because it is where the Native American Seneca Nation has historically held its traditional lands. The Seneca Nation was the largest of the six Native American nations that comprised the unique Iroquois Confederacy. The Iroquois Confederacy known also as the Haudenosaunee Confederacy was established by Hiawatha and the Peacemaker over a thousand years ago. The Haudenosaunee Confederacy is famous and unique because not only was peace established amongst the previously warring Native nations, but it is the very first example of democracy in America. Each member Nation was given an equal vote in decision-making.
A Tree of Peace was planted at Onondaga Lake by the Peacemaker to commemorate the occasion of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Onondaga Lake is one of New York State’s Five Finger Lakes.
So this location of Seneca Falls and the whole Onondaga Lake district is historically interesting and inspiring. It is the area where both women’s rights and democracy were born in America.
