  • Few public figures have thought longer or harder about the role of the media than Steve Coogan. He lead the charge against the press barons during the Leveson inquiry, and has just starred as Brian Walden, the father of the modern British political interview - documenting Walden's complex relationship with Margaret Thatcher in the new C4 two-part show 'Brian and Maggie'.
He sat down with Emily to discuss phone hacking, press freedom, toxic masculinity, Thatcher's legacy, and his verdict on Keir Starmer's Britain.
And later - why you should all go and see 'A Real Pain'.

Walden was an excellent interviewer. However, he helped write a speech for Thatcher just before the 1983 election, crossing a line as a journalist. Wholly unacceptable although in keeping with his admiration for Thatcherism and position on the right of Labour when he was an MP previously. He said himself at some point that he was never a socialist. Thatcher misjudged how competitive he was; when the famous interview of October 1989 took place he had determined that, notwithstanding their friendship and his support for her ideology, there could only be one winner. His reputation depended on it in the face of criticism that he was politically compromised.

Great conversation with some great insights. I think the comment about Jordan Petersen (and others) is very prescient. To be a contrarian (or an outsider as per the earlier conversation on politicians) is entertaining both to the individual and to the public. Someone like Starmer is 'boring' because he doesn't go round making contrarian statements. And, of course, social media is full of contrarians trying to ruin people's reputations or dominate the public conversation. It paints a sad picture of the current state of affairs. It's rather like life imitating art. We're not satisfied with life unless it has the same level of conflict of our favourite crime drama. Otherwise, it's boring. Do people really regard progress, harmony, peace as too boring to endure but would rather live in a world full of hatred and danger because it's entertaining?

I suppose you can't hold people to account because the person has hundreds of pod casters, youtubers to go to.In the past you had 3 or 4 channels. Now you have hundreds and they can pick and choose who to go to. Thats it in a nutshell. great show.

A full investigation required. Private prosecution obvious.

“If the police don’t act against these people who are guilty of criminal wrongdoing, then they’ll face private prosecutions,” say Mr Coogan at the start of this video. My question is: Do you mean the wrongdoers or the police should face these prosecutions?
Personally, I think both should be held accountable. And if it is left to private action to get any form of justice, our police are broken and should be dismissed as unfit for purpose, and replaced by officers willing to uphold the laws of the land.
After all, where did the press get all their tip offs from if not the police? We’ve known for some time that the Met is corrupted to the roots. Is there no PM with the courage to disband and replace their leadership, if not the entire institution?

I cant help but think about Amy Winehouse, she was trying to sort her life out with professional help and was chased out of a rehabilitation clinic by paparazzi, how did they know where she was, the disappointment in society was too much for her, is their culpability in her passing ? An investigation into this should be forth coming.

The Law itself is biased toward media moguls like Murdoch because they put the victim in a dilemma. In settlement discussions the tabloid proprietor would offer far more than would nominally be given by the court as damages. Yet in a disgraceful bias; should the victim refuse and want a official/ custodial decision the court would, even with a guilty verdict; still instruct that the victim pay both sets of legal fees. So creating an overwhelming disincentive to reforming the law and the media for the better. This law needs to change.

Coogan is right. The plausible deniability is little different to the activities of the Wagner Group…
