    The best thing that happened to me in Thailand was having the opportunity to attend a few meditation retreats in a Buddhist monastery. It did not solve all the problems in my life immediately but life slowly got much better after that.

      @@jonhobson3592 Meditate. When you meditate it actually reduces the impact of the Amygdala, the part of the brain that works with fear and the flight/fight reactions. Deep breathing will help to lessen the impact of stress and tension. Work out a little, weights and aerobics, they each cause the brain to release different chemicals that help to lessen anxieties and improve how you think. All of this will give your mind and body a chance to then deal with the emotions you are feeling without spiralling downwards. Trust me, it works and you really don't want to spiral down. Done that, lucky to be here still.

    It hit me at 38. I collapsed and passed out and rushed to hospital. Thought I was having a heart attack. Just ended up being a panic attack. Then I went through about a year on a downward spiral into a deep depression. Awful time of my life but learned along way about myself and changing my mindset.

    • @ProjectBangkok
      @ProjectBangkok  Месяц назад +1

      Bro! I’ve learned more about it myself in the past 3 years than the previous 35+ before it.. crazy af! I honestly found myself because of it.. the only way is up now…

      It also happened to me at 38 during a stressful situation (the most important job interview of my career). I managed to postpone the interview for 3 days and went to the doctor, who prescribed me a drug that did its job. But then I made another mistake: relying on that drug every time I was in a stressful situation.
      What I am trying to do now is change my habits. I am improving my diet, reducing alcohol consumption, exercising more, and taking better care of my friendships. I force myself to socialize a bit more so I don't focus too much on my job. I started using a planner to schedule personal life obligations and avoid being late. Now, when I start feeling anxious, I try to openly say what is happening to me. This helps me stay calm and allows others to understand the situation and not feel uncomfortable.
      I really think that low testosterone levels are part of the problem. I want to get them checked just in case, even though I am not planning to do TRT until I am at least 50.

    Good video- very important to talk openly about depression and anxiety. My 2 cents as someone who battled depression for over a decade......depending on the person, depression can take many different forms and require treatments tailored to the individual. One of the worst aspects of the condition is that it tends to have a "come-and-go" character. Many people experience intermittent symptoms that seem random.......symptoms will appear for no apparent reason, then eventually fade. The "depth" and length of the symptoms can vary dramatically from person to person. Speaking for myself, the severity increased with each 'episode' until I finally sought professional help. For years I visited shrinks, tried exercise routines, altered my diet, quit alcohol, and at times took medication when symptoms became disabling. I read dozens of self-help books, also. The road "out of the hole" (i.e., getting to a place where symptoms never returned regardless of life circumstances) was incredibly hard and required all tools mentioned and continuous effort. I did not want to depend on medication, shrinks, or anything.....I wanted a "full fix", to be 100% free of symptoms. I had to explore my past time and time again, digging around to find out what had happened. That self-exploration was crucial and led to "root causes" I had no knowledge of. All of the work gradually paid off as my symptoms became less severe with time, although I still struggled to be completely free of symptoms and the nagging dark clouds that sometimes returned. At the suggestion of a shrink, I tried doing mediation. It took some time to finally reach the point that I could practice regularly and effectively, but after about a month I began to feel a real change. My general mood gradually improved, and the symptoms of depression finally disappeared. That was 10 years ago, and the symptoms have never returned. I will finish by saying that everyone who suffers from depression needs to realize it's very common, with millions of people suffering to varying degrees. Many never fully move past their symptoms, but rather find "vices" to distract themselves from the symptoms......friends, alcohol, even exercise can be an escape. You need to face it head on, get help if it's serious and realize that there's effective pharmaceuticals available if symptoms become overwhelming. Don't try to go it alone. Depression is usually too powerful to battle it alone.

    Great idea for a video. Those who are often forgotten are the older foreign people living in Thailand, as many chose to be here for retirement. Most ideas presented are great for the younger generations of your viewers. But for those of us over 60, alone, and who do not relish going out to bars to drink and meet bar people, or getting up early to go out exercising in the heat, or with no particular pastimes, making friends is much harder to deal with. There are no opportunities that I know of in Bangkok for older mature foreigners to just meet and have coffee or a simple glass of wine before the sun sets. This is just a comment as I have no solution to suggest. But thanks for your contribution and Pat’s to this issue 👍

    It happens to all of us. Happiness is internal. It's not a location because once the honeymoon phase of a new location is over the issues will come back ten fold. When you run away from your problems they will always eventually catch up with you. Like Pat said many people move not just to Thailand but all over SE Asia to get away from their problems when in reality they bring them with and in due time they will resurface because they were never resolved.
    Moving to Thailand can be great for some people. Others will be happy for a month or so and then when they realise that Thailand didn't solve all of their problems they tend to start over drinking and then they sour on the country and the people. The term grumpy ex pat didn't come from nowhere. You see them at the bars in the morning complaining about the locals and everything in the country as if Thailand was supposed to change and adapt to them instead of the reverse. Some make it and others end up going home or sadly worse.

    • @ProjectBangkok
      @ProjectBangkok  Месяц назад

      Yeah I see what you’re saying.. deffo a lot of grumpy expats but then saying that I find even young digital nomads here younger than me don’t even want to make eye contact let alone strike a friendly conversation

    • @DamienYuen7718
      @DamienYuen7718 Месяц назад

      @@ProjectBangkok True about even the youngsters. Some people might be introverted and shy and others just grumpy for whatever reasons they have in their life. The Thai's are more open to conversations but the language barrier can be tough if they don't speak english and you don't speak Thai. A smile and the Wai greeting usually brings the same in return. I have met some very nice expats in various countries in SE Asia, But I have also met some really disgruntled ones as well. I spend most of my time in Malaysia. The Expats in Malaysia in general seem happier then the ones in Thailand or Philippines. Just my personal observation. People have to be willing to change and adapt to a new culture. Most importantly people need to come for the right reasons. If they come for the wrong reasons they will have a very hard time when they find out the reality on the ground. Hope for the best for you and a positive life in Thailand.

    Random question, do you moderate comments or does RUclips randomly shadow ban comments? I can empathise with you. Especially when you move to certain countries, you can feel isolated (definitely when the language barrier is quite steep). If you end up heading back home, its not quite the same as when you left. I know employers don't really do a great job of taking care of people from a language cultural/reacclimatisation aspect, when moving to somewhere new and back to their home country.

      If one has issues with drinking, sex addiction etc, Thailand is a country where they can and usually will get worse for many. Thailand is a wonderful country but it has a lot of temptations for men that warrant self discipline. If someone didn't have self discipline in their home country then Thailand will chew and spit you out quickly. I don't even go near the bars or clubs when I visit. It's not my scene to be around drunks and working women. It's all fake and meaningless. I don't judge those who go or the girls who work in that industry but that is not why I goto Thailand. Maybe try Malaysia. That is where I live. Thailand is for vacation. Malaysia is for living.
